The HDD: *GURGLING*
Literally reading next to my sleeping, pregnant wife reading some reddit before bed.
Starting laughing at your comment hard enough I had to pretend it was a cough. Damn you.
Unpowered hard drives are pretty resilient to water. We had a hard drive recovered from a frozen lake and it still worked
A lot of electronics are fine around water, so long as they fully dry before you run electricity through them again
Might not believe it but back when I worked on tv’s as a kid, we would was the back of them out with water hoses and just let them dry for a bit before plugging them in
That’s funny. A lot of people don’t know that pure water actually isn’t even a conductor at all it’s an insulator. The electricity moves through the impurities in water. Because unless you’re in a perfectly sterile environment water will always have conductive particles in it.
What about distilled water?
It technically doesn’t conduct, but the problem would be how fast impurities would wash into it. If it poured onto your PS5 then it would gather up all the dust and hair and microscopic shavings of metal and wash those over the semi conductors inside and short things out. But in a perfect situation, like a clean room and a clean PlayStation it actually would be okay. BUT as someone pointed out, water will corrode metal the longer it sits so you need to dry out everything as soon as possible.
Better off finding deionized water if you want water.
99% IPA with a can of air is the best thing to clean boards with.
Water eventually corrodes the metals. You shorten the life of any electronic by exposing it to water.
Sure. You need to dry it out as soon as possible. I’m just saying it will usually be okay as long as you’re not running power through it when it’s wet.
The HDD: *drowning noises*
Bruh HDD is the only thing that wont drown. Literally everything else will. Mb, cpu, gpu, psu. The HDD is sealed probubly for that exact reason.
It's sealed because a single speck of dust would destroy it.

Yeah I noticed it was in rest mode… something tells me she didn’t fully turn it off before unplugging it
I'll bet that's what bricked it!
I blame the brand of toothbrush she used. I don't believe it was Sony certified.
Unfortunately only one out of ten dentists are gamers

Buy your Sony certified cleaning toothbrush for your PlayStation today! The price is something you can afford - your soul!
Yes because that is what destroyed it
water is in the air, just a little more won’t hurt?? /s
Look closely at the hands (pause and play will be required.) Its a guy holding the toothbrush.
Also can see him in the gold faucet’s reflection, pause and look real close.
Edit: I’m clearly responding to SeppiFox writing “she,” letting SeppiFox know it’s in fact, a he. Reddit user 22Wideout is karma hunting hard.

I figured it was a guy because it looked so shitty at the end. Couldn't even dry it properly!
Haha I was thinking the same thing.
Imagine pretending to be your made up girlfriend and running your PS4 under a faucet.
They never said they were a girlfriend though.
I mean maybe it died and he decided to make a funny video?
What if... He's gay? And he has a boyfriend?!??
Used to have a boyfriend!
There’s probably still internal dust buildup, it’s recommended that you run it through the dishwasher to remove internal contamination.
On a serious note, my PS4 was having some disk drive issues and my dad's solution was to take it out to the garage and use an industrial grade air compressor, stick the nozzle into the disk drive and turn it on. On a positive note, a lot of dust from the inside blew out, on the negative side, the disk drive no longer works.
Make sure you stick something into the CPU fan so it won’t burn itself spinning too fast.
I just took mine out. It was moving way too fast. As a bonus, I don’t have to clean my frying pan if it’s dirty if all I want to do is fry an egg.
I ran my computer for like 5 seconds and burnt my finger touching the CPU. I had to for science...I just can't believe how hot it gets so fast
Fun fact, CPUs are generally on average 65-130w chips (desktop CPUs that is). If you do overclocking, you'll know the core voltage may be 1.1-1.3v or so. That can result in easily over 100 amps of current going into your chip.
Now if you look at the top of your chip, no heatsink, that silver thing you see is not the actual chips surface, it's a heat spreader. The actual chip itself is way smaller, perhaps about 100 sq mm in size, under that heat spreader.
Under sustained load without a heatsink, if it didn't throttle itself, it wouldn't just destroy itself, it would legit turn itself into a pile of molten silicon and metal.
Computers are just rocks we tricked into thinking.
its also advisable to put it in the freezer, to avoid overheating. Set the temperature in -120 C°, its faster if you put it underwater too
To be fair industrial compressors have water built up from the high pressure.
All compressors have water build-up,
Industrial/medical compressors have dryers to combat this.
Most homeowners don’t install dryers but they do make small ones you can run inline.
There's a little filter pack inside the hard drives to keep out dust. He probably launched that sucker into the platters/heads. Impressive.
Optical Disk drive, not hard drive.
Disk = magnetic/flash storage
Disc = optical storage
No no no no no. Do you *eat* off a PS4? What you need to do is put it in the laundry on the gentle cycle and make sure to use color-safe detergent unless your console is white. You don't want to bleach your PS4 or the colors will run.
It's best to line dry your PS4 but if you absolutely have to dry it in the dryer make sure to use just air and no heat, otherwise your console will shrink. I've found throwing a couple of tennis balls in with the PS4 will also help get out the wrinkles.
Yeah, I used too much heat and my PS4 came out as a PS2.
Congrats on improving the thing
Just be careful. The components are only top rack safe.
Right, I should have said but I’m so used to it I just took for granted that it would be assumed, thanks. Top rack only!
I know this is a joke but it still hurts.
This is the first time I'm glad a joke video is scripted.
Jokes videos ARE scripted imagine going to a one man show and the guy just tells you about his normal af day
The problem is when the only reason the joke is funny is because it supposedly happened organically. There's a difference between a horror movie and one friend pretending to be scared of a prank they knew was coming.
I often wonder if this is a generational difference or something because I see it on here so often. If I found out that the Jackass movies were all fake and utilized CGI or something it would instantly stop being entertaining because my mental bar is higher for scripted things than it is for things that happen by chance.
One of my coworkers once shot his pen cap up in the air during a meeting and then caught it back on the end of his pen and we all went nuts. If I saw will Ferrell do the same thing in the same way with CGI in a movie it would elicit no reaction from me.
It’s the serendipity factor that is removed when you find out something is fake.
I think it depends what you mean by 'fake.' If I found out Jackass was all CGI and no one actually did the stuff they say they do it would be lame. But I'm pretty sure it isn't all organic and they spend a lot of time planning out what they're going to do. It's not worse because it's scripted.
It's like wrestling. They might have already decided who the winner and loser will be before the show but they are actually hitting each other with steel chairs and whatever.
It’s all about expectations. I expect Jackass to give me the veneer of it happening organically. This “could” happen and I expect it to be staged in such a way that I don’t need much suspension of disbelief.
Wrestling, as a step up, is expecting a little more of my suspension of disbelief, but I agree to that when I decide to watch it.
A step up from that would something like Lord of the Rings. Much more expectation of suspension of disbelief.
It’s like wrestling. Wrestling is scripted. People are like Brock lesnar went in there and beat John cena! Can you believe it?
Yes, yes I can. Because that’s exactly what was *scripted* to happen.
Wow. It’s rare I spend time reading comments. I liked this
The fuck you do on Reddit then? Read the articles like some psychopath?
Hey, don't be mean. He's finally branching out from warhammer40k
Right??? Who the hell uses reddit for the content... lurking through all the comments is what we all do.
Not true, pranks (which are a type of joke) that are real vs scripted are fundamentally different, because of the reactions either being real and organic, or fake.
It's possible to clean electronics with water. I clean my keyboards by putting them in the dishwasher.
2 things though:
1)absolutely discharge any electricity from the device prior to cleaning
2)absolutely have 0 moisture present when connecting the device to a power source
This works sometimes with some kinds of simple electronics, but generally not advisable.
First reason is rust or other corrosion. Parts in keyboard key switches, things like screws, the metal ends of capacitors, and other parts that are likely to be made of steel can rust, if they are present.
Second reason is components that won't dry quickly. Laptop-style keyboards, for example, will have two printed circuit films sandwiched together and key-presses bring them in contact. Water that gets between these films won't dry for a small eternity and you will have to take it apart or throw it away.
Third reason is residual charge left in capacitors. An unfortunate discharge can break things. Tends not to apply to things like keyboards.
Fourth reason is that the oven-drying people tend to turn to to accelerate this process often ends poorly. It's hard to tell when it's truly completely dry, in any case.
There are probably more reasons not to do this.
If compressed air can't take care of it, I recommend spot cleaning with a brush, using a volatile solvent (like high-proof alcohol) if it needs to be wet-cleaned. Alcohol is conductive (and flammable!) so the capacitor concern still applies.
Brb lemme wash my fucking laptop because someone said I could wash a keyboard lmao.
Water is actually a really shitty conductor. You can buy distilled water and drown your motherboard to wash it, then dry it in an oven. It will still work.
No. Distilled water makes no difference since the instant it picks up grime and shit from your MB it's not longer distilled. You also have to make sure all the capacitors are fully decharged.
If you rinse it with with IPA then another batch of DI after then it'd probably work.
In case anyone is wondering, IPA = Isopropyl alcohol.
Please don't rinse your electronics in beer, regardless of hops content.
Also, DI = De-ionized water, which is a step further than distilled.
Just FYI deionised isn't a step further than distilled, distilled is usually purer. Deionised is normally cheaper. I work in a lab.
Damn I was hoping to find a good use for the IPAs I get in my mixed 12 pack of beer.
I’ll take all your IPAs. Send them anytime!

You’ve got this kinda like Florida panhandle thing going, whereas what you really want is more of a Savannah accent, which is more like molasses just sorta spillin’ outta your mouth.
You don’t have to say “I declare.” You’re declaring it by saying it
I don't know. You've kind of got this Florida panhandle thing going on. Now what you want is a Savannah accent like there's molasses spilling out of your mouth.
Now do the Swedish chef!
He comes on sesame Street dumbass
I’m not familiar with that, which parish is he from?
Thee theee *sayyds* and the *duuuurt*

Quick, it can still be saved! It’ll be OK as long as you dry all the water that might have seeped inside the box. All you have to is put it on the oven on low heat for 4 hours.
Ironically, most electronic water damage (assuming it is unplugged when wet....hopefully, or you probably have another problem entirely) comes from corrosion. (Data boards more specifically)
There is a guy on YouTube who restores Switches, Xboxes, and PlayStations constantly by cleaning the corrosion. It can be tough for him, but is pretty remarkable.
HDD are probably just dead though.
Edit: I remembered the channel:
If you’re talking about Odd Tinkering I love his videos and they motivated me to start cleaning my controllers and consoles.. broke my Xbox One’s faceplate tho, but it still works
I found both Odd Tinkering and TronicsFix through algorithmic chance and boy am I glad I did. Great content on both channels.
Same here. Went on a bender of watching a bunch of their videos. So satisfying.
Besides these two, my binge list is 'My Mate VINCE, Hugh Jeffreys, TysyTube' and of course the king of silent perfection 'my mechanics'
Never heard of this channel but looks pretty cool. Thanks!
Which is interesting because this means that all of the electronic water damage is actually caused by all of the things in the water that weren't water. The calcium, magnesium, silica, dissolved oxygen, etc are the problem. Fully deionized water might actually help rinse contaminants away if allowed to dry in a reasonably sterile environment.
Fun fact: fully deionized water is bad to drink for similar reasons. You need those mineral electrolytes or your body reads a heavy imbalance and tries to equalize both through osmosis of giving salts to the new incoming water and violently expel said pure water from your system. I don't know the details of what happens but I have to assume that on the mild end is very uncomfortable diarrhea and dehydration, ironically.
*Edit: [Here's a source for the fun fact.](https://advancedwaterinc.com/ultra-pure-water/) Standard drinking water filters like Brita stuff and your fridge filter are not outputting ultra pure DI water. The lab quality pure water is what I'm talking about being bad to drink.
Exactly. Even if you had pure water though, you'd still come across oxidation on electronics. Oxidation on many metals cause rust and rust is bad.
That's why the cleaning solvents for this are typically alcohol or alcohol-based.
Alcohol (which is usually 5-40% water anyway) can also cause oxidation but it evaporates much faster than water preventing the issue, generally speaking.
Exactly. To evaporate water quickly, you'd want to apply heat and airflow...like a hairdryer or heat gun (which does have their own application in electronic repair). There is a risk with those of causing other damage.
(Not arguing. Agreeing with elaboration...I fear this will come off wrong when read.)
Nope completely on the same page! Just gotta make sure you don't get too hot and remelt the solder or any of the plastic components haha
There are extreme overclockers who will literally dishwasher motherboards.
Edit: example https://youtu.be/SVuI-Fn27-U
Seriously? I'd be afraid of damaging capacitors and stuff with water pressure.
Is there a specific reason they use a dishwasher and not just can air, alcohol, and a non-static brush?
Yeah I "saved" my phone after dropping it in a pool by immediately turning it off and letting it dry (having slightly disassembled it first). It'd have worked if I just put it back together at that point, but the real issues would have presented months later because even when the water is gone, it leaves behind a ton of deposits (pool water has a ton of chlorine). Have to give electronics a bath in a solvent like isopropyl alcohol to truly remove even water damage because water is often more than just water.
Yeah I work in phone repair and just the other day saved someone's phone that was completely dead by just scrubbing the board with alcohol.
You wanna put a PS4 in the oven for 4 hours? Are you stupid?
Use microwave and it's just a matter of minutes!
The microwave might be okay if you're an American, but the Italians know the proper way is to slow roast your PS4 overnight until it's tender.
Boil it until it's aldente
It's been quite some time since my eyebrows have rocketed up my forehead with such velocity.
That's my third monocle this week. I simply must stop being so horrified!
Thats a good one
Your eyebrows still got up higher than Branson or Bezos
Seems tedious to type both their names. Let's just go with Brazzos.
That's good, but we need something easier to say - how about Brazzers?
this could be fine if given enough time to dry
Yeah, people forget water won't always damage electronics if they are kept off and given time to dry properly.
I accidentally spilled some of that delicious hospital apple juice on my grandpa’s life support. Luckily I quickly switched it off before too much damage could be done to the unit. Hospital was real weird about it though.
Yes yes but how did your grandma feel about it
Though not quite as quiet as grandpa
Also fixed that damn beeping. beep......beep......beep.
I left my Bop-It eXtreme 2 outside one summer, through fall, winter, and spring before finding it again in the summer sun.
It dried out in the sun, I popped new batteries in and it fired up again like nothing had happened. Even maxed it out (it only went up to like 200 or 250).
As long as you don't run it when it's wet, giving it a chance to short and break, yeah you'll be fine.
If it was a normal Bop-It it would never have handled those extreme temperatures.
My God... You're right!
Corrosion will get you in the long run tho since most metals in them aren't coated to protect them
I have spilled water on my pc twice and both times I left it unplugged/open for 3 days to dry It’s still running like a beauty.
But this is tap water. It's filled with other impurities that could fuck up the electronics, no?
Also the soap.
Maybe if it was pure distilled water or maybe pure isopropyl alcohol- it could work.
The gamer in me died a little and the IT specialist in me had a stroke.
It's probable it was already dead and it's just a mildly clever joke. On the off chance it was working, I'd like to believe that karma or hell exists. Yeah, hell sounds nice.
electronics can usually survive being submerged in water, as long as they are completely dry with no conductive residue when you power them on.
but i still highly recommend to never do it unless you know what you're doing. like cleaning flux of self made PCBs with water and Isopropanol.
That's somewhat true but a lot of things can go wrong like capacitors not being empty in power supplies or just corrosion !
Yup. BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T SCRUB THE INSIDES
Scrubbing with soap and water is actually normal in small scale electronics manufacturing. It gets rid of excess flux residue as well as any oils from human hands.
Usually use alcohol or something that evaporates quickly for that.
Actually, distilled water can be used in a lot of circumstances. Using DI and finishing with iso to dry the board out is a completely viable option and somewhat cheaper if you're working with PCBs on an industrial scale.
Industrial PCB cleaners actually just resemble dishwashers, but using DI as a water source.
No, you can use water and a brush to scrub electronic components. You can even submerge them in water. As long as you completely dry before pushing power back through, you are good.
Yep. And I guessed like hat, so you don't tear off the transistors
True this, when i was a kid, i dropped an intel i740 graphics adapter in the toilet. (Dont ask). It was in there a few seconds totally soaked. Dried it out for a couple days and it worked fine.
What about rust? And possible minerals that were in bottle that are now left anywhere inside?
But I’ve done something (stupid) similar - I knocked a water bottle onto my laptop, dumped a fair amount on the one side. Screen got all glitchy from it as I panicked to turn it off holding the power button. Hand dried it, turned it on its side with a fan and let it dry out over a couple days. Worked fine.
I spilled a solid 500 mL of water into my desktop computer when I was rebuilding an old watercooling loop, completely drenching a hard drive in the process.
Still using that hard drive a decade later. Good old Hitachi Ultrastars, best drives ever.
Her boyfriend seems to already live in hell
To be fair, if he let it dry out before pluggin it back it then it probably would have been just fine. Hard drives are air tight anyway.
And then we realize it's completely fake
This. On both accounts. The engineer in me felt that PS4 die.
The only relevant comment we were looking for
Had to scroll too far down to see this.
The best bit is how she hangs it on a line to dry!
I was getting to that part but then the site decided the video was almost over and i needed to watch more of their vids which they carefully put ALL OVER THE VIDEO.
This girl dresses up to clean tbh
at least she was careful not to break it when putting it on the sink
I am in pain.
However, this is how you clean junk files and free a lot of HDD space.
More like free the HDD from ever storing anything again lmao
Son, That girl is the DEBBIL!!
I think I need to take anti depressants after watching this

Gopi vahu was here
Quick! Put it in a bag of rice.
I don't get how so many people think this is real. The thing was probably already broken/replaced and they just made a meme out of the broken PS4. Like calm the fuck down, it's a shitty meme.
chances are, there isn't even a bf
Yea I bet they were roommates
Look at the sub you're on, they'll upvote and believe just about anything.
I know this is a joke but it hurts my soul
Did you know that leaving it plugged in while cleaning will help things dry off because of the heat it generates?
How to clean a console step 1: get a duster step 2: dust the console and your done.

This is misleading, it's cleaning my ex-boyfriend PS4.
For more pain they should have used a PS5

I know this is a joke. But one time I drunkenly peed so much all over and into my ps3 and it still worked. It was so much pee that I held it up by a corner and pee drained out for probably 30-45 seconds. I let it dry and the motherfucker still works to this day.
Is... Is there a story behind this?
Story is that he is an alcoholic. The end
DRUNKENLY PEED SO MUCH ALL OVER AND INTO HIS PS3
