DweadPiwateWoberts

How is Max Verstappen so much ridiculously ahead of others in terms of time?

Stupendous_man12

Red Bull has the best car by a significant margin (at least 7 tenths per lap, perhaps more), and Max is an amazing driver, much better than his teammate. Put those two things together and you get dominance.

Kor-11

May I ask why the time margin is smaller in qualifying compared to races?

ScaratheBear

For quali the cars are turned up the the max. Highest power engine mode, max battery assist, light fuel, softest tires, drivers pushing as hard as possible. Gaps come down as the performance gap between the cars lessens. For the race, engines are run on more efficient settings, harder tires, drivers are given times to hit for their race strategy, strategic pushing. The gap between a fast car and a slow car becomes much more significant.

tinf

I got access to Google Bard and asked it about the current season. It insisted that the 2023 Australian GP has already happened and even gave me detailed information about the results. |Driver|Team|Position|Pit Stops|Fastest Lap| |:-|:-|:-|:-|:-| |Charles Leclerc|Ferrari|1st|2|1:33.691| |Sergio Pérez|Red Bull|2nd|2|1:33.768| |Carlos Sainz Jr.|Ferrari|3rd|2|1:34.077| |Max Verstappen|Red Bull|4th|2|1:34.179| |George Russell|Mercedes|5th|1|1:34.334| |Lewis Hamilton|Mercedes|6th|1|1:34.469| |Valtteri Bottas|Alfa Romeo|7th|1|1:34.570| |Fernando Alonso|Aston Martin|8th|1|1:34.656| |Pierre Gasly|Alpine|9th|1|1:34.718| |Kevin Magnussen|Haas|10th|1|1:34.795| It also said that Latifi and Ricciardo will DNF...

DieLegende42

Looks like it's been a very wet race as well, looking at the fastest laps

tinf

We shall see

ScaratheBear

It's true, they won't finish the race. Won't start it either, but that's a different matter.

tinf

True!

botohowotoh

What percentage would you say winning in F1 is about the car and the pilot? Could someone like Latifi become a champion in RB19 (if he was alone in the team)?

xjagerx

I would point you towards the 2008 season, where -- for a corner -- Massa was World Champion. Massa wasn't ever a Latifi, but he wasn't *really* respected as a driver. He was once dropped from Sauber (now Alfa Romeo) for being a bit crap. However, for a few seconds, he was the presumptive World Champion. He could not manage a World Championship like Button did in 09. Nor could he have passed Schumacher around the outside of 130R like Alonso did to Schumacher. He definitely couldn't have politicked the team away from the defacto leader like Rosberg did. If you have the best car and best engine on the grid you can have the tangibles to be a World Champ. But, often, there's a lot more than that. If Latifi's dad had bought Aston rather than Stroll's, Latifi would get at least one podium this season. That's the power of a good and highly driveable car. I'm not for a second saying that Narin Karthikeyan could have been a champ. But I am saying that the right guy in the right place can finally bring it home.

Penguinho

Probably not, but he'd have regular podiums and finish in the top four or five in the WDC. The car determines the ceiling. The absolute maximum performance is 100% a function of the capability of the car. The driver determines how much of that performance is delivered on track.

rooood

I was looking at plane tickets for Nice (next to Monaco) for the GP weekend for fun, but was sad to see that the cheapest Sunday ticket is now over €2000. How soon do you have to buy Monaco GP general admission tickets?

Aggravating-Hair8355

Not Nice

drodrige

I don’t know about Monaco, but at least in Mexico tickets go on sale a year in advance, and by now (7 months away) they’re already sold out.

rooood

Yeah I figured as much :( It's just hard to commit to something a year in advance, especially if you have a family. I honestly had basically zero hopes of going to Monaco this year, it was just a fun search, but still

drodrige

Sure thing. Hopefully you find something at a fair price!

metallica41070

don't know much about F1 aside from some of the big names, just binged season 1 of Drive to Survive, man it was fantastic. cant wait to catch up and watch this season

Organic-Measurement2

Dts is very dramatised and many of the narratives that it covers are made up. It's very good piece of media and enjoyable, but it doesn't reflect reality to a great extent

LongjumpingAnimal772

That’s fantastic!! As the other commenter said, DYS is a great start. Enjoy watching your first races. DTS doesn’t give you a full picture of some elements (eg rules, tire strategy, race raft, etc.), so don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed your first race or two. It took my three or four races to understand what was going on, and maybe a season to understand strategy. I am still working on race craft :)

metallica41070

Yea DTS has def helped with learning about teams and drivers, and obvs makes things very dramatic haha. But im enjoying it so far

TaurusRuber

DTS is definitely an excellent way to introduce yourself to the sport; just keep in mind a lot of the content is created for entertainment purposes, and not necessarily reality. If you're looking for more content to watch, I would definitely check out the Schumacher and Senna documentaries, they are very well done and give you a good glimpse into their lives. For movies, Rush is probably one of the best movies made on the sport (aside from documentaries of course). It's a tad embellished, but still a great watch.

metallica41070

Def will add those to the list to watch. I remember playing a game for ps1 and always used Schumacher!

Firefox72

Not getting into the early beta for Counter Strike 2 has disstracted me from the dissapointment that is Ferrari.

TaurusRuber

Been waiting on a Source 2 CS game to get me back into map making, I haven't paid attention to CS in years, didn't even realize they were making a CS2

TheFlyingR0cket

Just wondering if anyone remembers which race weekend McLaren is bringing their big update for their car? Personal I think they just need a clean weekend and Lando and Oscar will be fighting for the last two points positions. But that's the problem with AM making a big step forward it leaves only two points place for the other 12 drivers. I am really hoping McLaren does have a great update.

southerncrossracers

Baku, supposedly.

KoloHickory

F1 22 is $10 on steam right now if anyone is interested

doobie3101

Worth the upgrade on F1'21? I'm still finding enough action on 21 online lobbies but it definitely has dwindled.

TaurusRuber

People are shooting down F1 22, but I never had much of an issue. The cars drive way different, but you get used to it quite quick. Even with a controller using no TC or ABS, I got into the groove of the cars within the first day. I would say bite the bullet, it's quite fun, just never buy it for full price when it comes out. $10 is a steal.

pedote17

Absolutely not

Penguinho

No. It has a bunch of never-fixed bugs and cars drive like shit.

KoloHickory

Better than f18? All i do is time trials

Penguinho

Maybe? I think the general consensus is that F1 2020 is the best of the recent games, then '21, then '22. I'm not sure where '19 comes in, if it's even available for sale. The consensus on 2022 is pretty negative. If you play on PC or XBox, though, 2022 is on Game Pass, which has a $1 one-month trial, so you could try that.

KoloHickory

I got it for the $10 to try out so far it's really good. Have tried career, grand prix, and time trials. Cars feel weighty and good. Adjusted controls with assists off and calibration for a controller. Maybe the online mode sucks? Granted I've only played for an hour but i don't see anything bad with the game. Not particularly amazing just another fresh coat of paint but it's only $10. I could see if someone buys these games every year for $60 being upset

TaurusRuber

I've never had an issue with F122. The cars handle different, but even using no TC or ABS on a controller, I got a handle of it within a day. The AI since F1 2021 has always been a bit wonky IMO, theres a few website out there that tell you what your AI level 'should' be at, depending on the track and your lap time.

Penguinho

The most common complaints are traction problems and insane AI speed on straights.

FRED44444

I am looking for a good race journal. Slmething that allows me to write down info about each race, where everyone finished, how they qualified, race score, etc. Anyone have any suggestions?

RonnieBingOBangO

StatsF1[https://www.statsf1.com/en/default.aspx](https://www.statsf1.com/en/default.aspx) provides the information you're looking for. Plus lap by lap, laps led, fastest laps. They also have description of the races, unfortunately in French only.

SharlLeglergOnHards

I’m a relatively new fan and I wanted to go back and watch some the older seasons. Which season should I start with? I was thinking 2004-2005.

Diem-Perdidi

/u/pedote17 and /u/xjagerx have given some good responses, but I'd also add 1982. A batshit mental and heartbreakingly tragic season in which the eventual champion only won one race, largely because anyone else in contention had either died or suffered career-ending injuries. It really needs the _Rush_ treatment one day, but in the meantime, the recent documentary *Villeneuve Pironi* is worth a watch as a companion piece. 1986-1991 are also pretty seminal, well covered in the archives and remembered by those of us *d'un certain âge* with a nostalgia bordering on the irrational. If you were wondering why people go all misty-eyed (misty-keyed?) when they speak of Senna, Prost, Mansell and the like, those seasons are well worth checking out.

xjagerx

As an longer running fan, don't discount the mid 90s. The 94 season will always be remembered for Senna, but plenty of other happened (Mansell's return, split race in Japan, that finale...). In 96 you had a great Williams battle, followed up by an all time legendary commentary call. In 97 you had another incredible finale. The couple of hour review tapes they did of those years are well worth a watch.

SharlLeglergOnHards

Good to know, thanks!

pedote17

Best seasons since 2000: 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 I’d go with 2010 or 2012.

Tourgott

2012 was a great season.

PassTimeActivity

Watch season reviews which are upto 3h long instead of whole seasons if you want to save time. They do a good job of summarising everything that happened on and off track.

SharlLeglergOnHards

Tbh I was planning to just watch races on the side while working so time isn’t an issue. But thanks for the suggestion!

tomhanks95

Watch any season from 2006-2010, all were great seasons, even though on track action might be a bit boring, but all had amazing narratives and championship battles

SharlLeglergOnHards

Perfect, I’ll start with those. Thanks!

superfuturepuck

Going through drive to survive on netflix and this question keeps coming to mind: Why isn't there just one optimal way to build and tune a f1 car and then all the teams just replicate it? Do the best constructors just have some secrets that they hold onto in how they build their car which is what separates them?

Gaius_Octavius_

Why isn't there just one optimal way to build and tune a football team? Or a basketball team? Or run a business? The short answer is because there are so many different, independent variables it is basically impossible to copy someone completely.

Penguinho

Playing devil's advocate, that's because all of those are things where the performance driver is the people (though it depends on the kind of business) and people are unique. There _is_ an optimal way to build a basketball team, but it's impossible to do because 29 other teams are competing for the same one-of-a-kind pieces. But in F1, if the 10 teams decided to put their heads together and design the One Car to Rule Them All, all 10 of them would have the capacity to manufacture it and put it on track.

Gaius_Octavius_

But they all wouldn’t have a Max or a Fernando to drive it.

Penguinho

The original question was just about building and tuning, though. If all ten teams had optimal cars, the drivers would be the main performance differentiator.

Penguinho

There probably is a best way to build a car and tune it for each track, but practically it's impossible because the task is so complex. Regulations change pretty frequently, at least in some small way, and that keeps all the teams off the absolute bleeding edge. And even if a team did get a 100% perfect car that couldn't be improved, the other teams would have to converge on that solution, which is much easier said than done, because they're all trying to keep what they do as secret as possible. I think that's maybe the piece you're missing: constructors go to enormous lengths to hide the sources of their performance. Red Bull, to name one, haven't shown their actual racecar during the preseason livery reveals -- they just stick the FIA's pre-2021 show car out there with Red Bull paint on it. Engineers changing teams regularly have to take long gardening leave periods for IP reasons.

Blooder91

Basically, if you copy what someone else does, you get the "how", but not the "why", so the team with the original idea ends up having the upper hand at developing further upgrades. Teams usually try to stick to a single philosophy, and develop their car based on that. And there is no optimal way to tune an F1 car, since track characteristics and racing conditions vary all the time.

Astelli

>Why isn't there just one optimal way to build and tune a f1 car and then all the teams just replicate it? Building an F1 car is a massively complex process involving aerodynamics, structures, vehicle dynamics, composites design, materials science, control systems, electronics, industrial manufacturing and loads of other disciplines. There is no "one best way" because there are so many disciplines and departments involved and plenty of compromises that have to be made along the way between those different diciplines just to get a car built and on track. One part might be better for aero, but add weight. One suspension design might help tyres in low speed corners, but hurt them in high-speed. The way a team manages these compromises is a crucial part of the car design process.

kicker414

Is there an F1 equivalent to NFL Play-by-Play? Just curious if this exists. For American Football games, ESPN has a Play-by-Play feature which shows you quick bits of information like the below. ([Link to example](https://www.espn.com/nfl/playbyplay/_/gameId/401438030)) >1st & 10 at PHI 26 (15:00 - 1st) (Shotgun) M.Sanders up the middle to PHI 26 for 1 yard (T.McDuffie). FUMBLES (T.McDuffie), ball out of bounds at PHI 24. Does something like this exist for F1? Like maybe by lap, could highlight notable events Safety Cars, pits, overtakes, crashes, fastest lap, etc.? It would be nice to be able to look back at previous races and get a good overview of what happened. Everything right now is just text based. Having a standardized format like the Play-by-Play would be interesting. If not, is there any interest in this? Edit: forgot link when I copied from my post, sorry!

AgnesBand

The Guardian does something similar to this for every race. Not sure if it fits what you mean though.

kicker414

[I think I see what you are talking about?](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2022/nov/20/f1-abu-dhabi-grand-prix-live) I realize I forgot the link in the OP, edited to include. This is probably the closest I have seen, but it is still free text. I am focusing on the "more structured" nature of the Play-by-Play. Obviously there would have to be some editorializing because there is too much going on at any given time. The PbP feels like "raw information" of what happened. I do like some of the info the Guardian provides, I could imagine some sort of "speech bubble" for radio comments and such would be interesting. Thanks!

Penguinho

The closest thing is the timing board -- https://www.formula1.com/en/f1-live-timing.html

kicker414

Oh this is pretty close. Is this only live? I can see the lap 50 of 50, but cant seem to go back. This is definitely the closest but feels like its more intended for detailed live info (which I get is super useful). I feel like the price makes sense for what you get, but the fact it includes the right to stream the race (I guess replacing the need for a TV sub?) puts it in a different category. I might get this just to see. Although for some reason the interface is SUPER slow haha. Thanks for this, something to think about.

Blothorn

For past races my favorite is RaceFan's interactive data (e.g. [https://www.racefans.net/2023/03/05/2023-bahrain-grand-prix-interactive-data-lap-charts-times-and-tyres/](https://www.racefans.net/2023/03/05/2023-bahrain-grand-prix-interactive-data-lap-charts-times-and-tyres/)), although they're fairly slow putting it up (I can't find the data for Saudi Arabia yet). That said, I'd definitely be interested in something with a bit more detail, such as recording where passes are made and exactly when SC/VSC periods start and end.

Torrero

In what race did Hamilton say, "He got so much rear end."? I can't find a clip of it anywhere.

DieLegende42

Baku 2021, I believe

RonnieBingOBangO

Your belief is correct, Sir.

tennerz777

Am i the only one that feels that Checo is gonna end up embarrassing himself come end of the season w certain things he says to the press??? Like no offense to checo of course but if you are gonna to talk you have to be able to back it up and ngl he doesn’t hold a candle to max , pace wise or talent wise, experience n knowledge is there of course but let’s be honest Max is clearly levels ahead

GrowthDream

He's a multiple time formula 1 race winner driving one of the most dominant cars in history. I don't think he's worried about being embarrassed. His career has gone better than the vast majority of people could ever hope for.

tennerz777

All his wins bar Sakhir n Monaco(cus u can’t overtake anyway) have stemmed from something happening w Max

GrowthDream

I doubt that keeps him up at night.

tennerz777

At what point did i say it did ??

GrowthDream

For me it was implied by the flow of the conversation. Someone made the observation that he would be embarrassed by his performance to which I made the counter point that he'd be happy with all of his achievements. You then replied saying that some of his achievements have asterisks beside them, which to me felt like a further counter argument back in favour of his likelihood for embarrassment. Like, I doubt Panis feels less achievement for winning at Monaco knowing that half the field failed to finish.

Le_Pistache

Not sure what people expect him to say. He wants to be champion and he believes in himself that he can challenge. That's the whole point of even racing in motorsport. He is not going to come out and say that he is grateful and looking forward to being spanked by Verstappen most weeks.

tennerz777

be fr

AgnesBand

"Do you think you can win the championship" "No" Is that what you expect from him?

tennerz777

At what point did i say that????

mformularacer

What don't you like about what he's saying and what should he say instead?

burnin_potato69

Do people expect Sainz to stay with Ferrari after 2024? Who would replace him? Could we see a scenario where McLaren stays shit and Lando leaves a year early?

121221L58

It has been speculated that Sainz Sr. is working to get Jr. into Audi

Le_Pistache

It is too early to speculate on that. Too many variables in play. Even predicting the 2024 grid would be a fool's errand. Teams only start looking at their next year's options more closely around summer time. The ideal replacement for Sainz would come down to whether someone better or as good is available in his stead. Someone would have to pay off McLaren for Norris to join another team earlier. Not impossible as he is a talented driver but would only happen if one of the top teams is keen on it. Norris leaving McLaren early on his own volition would be impossible unless he has some release clauses. Otherwise he would be in potential breach of contract.

Before this season I would have been happy with an Alonso win, or at least a chance of a win. But with Aston's current car and with the promised upcoming development, I'm genuinely super excited for races like Spain, Monaco, Hungary and Zandvoort. They all feel like circuits where the Aston has a chance of fighting at the front (although he may need a little fortune here and there).

dl064

I read recently that AM and McLaren have very good tyrewear, so Saudi is actually probably somewhat *poor* for them on the sunday.

Sacesss

Almost every circuit is poor for McLaren, and it's not the circuits' fault.

DieLegende42

McLaren weren't even *that* shit at Jeddah. Piastri got into Q3 (Norris made a mistake in Q1 that ended the session for him) and then both their races were effectively over from one small touch

dl064

People just *have it in their head* McLaren are backmarkers and have been for years. Bizarre.

PassTimeActivity

We're yet to see a clean weekend for McLaren where they are running at where their true pace should put them. That being said, they are likely 6th best on a good day.

Marbro_za

mclaren, mainly because they go so slow

SirMartini

why was Bottas so incredibly slow in Saudi?

southerncrossracers

He got belted with what was left of Oscar's front wing after Norris was finished with it. Gasly really ruined three races with one bonehead move.

smellytacocart

Just expressing some personal thoughts…I have been a Daniel Ricciardo fan for 7 years… I was very upset when he was left without a seat, but not in denial about his performance like others… and as of a month ago was praying he’d make it back onto the grid. But I have made it through the stages of grief and am at peace with his exit, and at this point…hoping he doesn’t return…I think I have, as a fan, closed the chapter and am prepared to move on within the sport.

SharlLeglergOnHards

Judging by his Instagram, I genuinely think he’s much happier where he is now. You can never know for sure, but his time at Mclaren probably put a ton of pressure on him and he looks glad to be rid of it. He’s just out living his best live and I’m so happy for him.

dl064

I think it's hard to say. I didn't think Raikkonen or Hulkenberg or Magnussen would come back.

DieLegende42

The notable difference being that Hülkenberg and Magnussen didn't lose their seats for being terrible

smellytacocart

Yeah I am not saying I don’t think he will ever come back. I am just saying that I am ok if he doesn’t, feel some closure.

Diem-Perdidi

Yes and yes. Give it a watch.

smartbutslow

At this point the only thing that excites me for this season is the prospect of one of RB drivers to miss a weekend only for Ricciardo to have more points than Piastri and Norris. Can someone challenge Perez for second place?

BlaizeV

Been watching F1 since 2002, over two decades now and tbh for the first time I'm starting to lose interest. F1 meant the world to me for along time but I've lost the love for it. In that two decades I've witnessed 3 dominant era's. First Schumacher, then Vettel and then Hamilton. Being british fortunately I found the latter one easier to stomach, as well as Rosberg being a proper rival. But I have to say in all my years of watching nothing beat 2005-2010. 6 years, 5 Champions. Let that sink in, 6 years, FIVE CHAMPIONS. F1 actually used to be like that, but like everything greed has totally fucked it all up. I don't know if I can stomach watching Max win week in and week out, tbh I'm not the biggest fan. I think he is an incredible driver but I just don't like him. Then add in all the crap tracks we go to, the massive cars that minimize overtaking, the shit engine noise, the bloated schedule, the abysmal SkyF1 coverage (Crofty and Brundle need to be replaced, both are past it). I think the fire has burnt out for me. I'll keep watching for abit longer, having seen literally every race for over 2 decades is a hard habit to break, but I might be done. At the very least I'm nearing being done caring. Which makes me sad but who knows come the summer when most other sport stops maybe I'll find time to care more. But watching Max win potentially 3-5 years in a row like he is most likely going to do is a real blow to my enthusiasm for this sport. Watching a full season and getting perhaps maybe 5 good races and 17 bad to mediocre ones hardly gets me too excited. Oh and we don't even race when it rains more than a few drops anymore.

newdecade1986

The season length is a big part of the burnout for me too. Sure more races sound great in theory but when it's the same patterns repeating over and over, and each round becomes proportionately less meaningful, it just becomes a chore. Plus I can't bring myself to watch any more middle eastern night races.

Vaexa

This user is cooking some prime copypasta.

serioxha

I'm completely in the same boat. Been watching since I was a kid. I didn't *love* 2014 or 2015 but I did then go on to love 2016-2020 even though it was the same driver/team winning. But now I have completely lost all interest, nothing at all compels me about the new era of domination. Admittedly I don't really click with the new generation of drivers, I don't like any of them very much, of the lot George is my favourite so I'll only really care about F1 again if he gets a championship contending car

dl064

> But I have to say in all my years of watching nothing beat 2005-2010. 6 years, 5 Champions. Let that sink in, 6 years, FIVE CHAMPIONS To play Devil's Advocate though, what was it like the 5 years around that? (Edit: rhetorical)

Penguinho

If you go back to the 1990s, I mean, yeah, there were a lot of different champions that decade but basically they were Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Whoever Got To Drive Adrian's Car, and the reason the person in Adrian's car varied so much is that Frank Williams and Patrick Head were _fucking terrible_ at managing personnel.

"Hey, you see that video from 2004 Formula 1? That was so rad! I wish the sport would still be as great as it was now." - Dudes who clearly weren't around to see the 2004 season.

PM_me_British_nudes

u/BlaizeV has said he's watched from 2002, and u/dl064 is like one of the most knowledgeable users here on the sub. I'm not really sure what you're trying to get at here.

dl064

Oh that's nice.

PM_me_British_nudes

No problem dude!

rbryan06

inb4 Yuki or Lawson takes that RB seat if someone misses a GP for RB

smellytacocart

Yuki looks like shit, they would never move him up.

TraditionalFig7135

????

PM_me_British_nudes

Maybe Alonso could challenge, but I don't think he'd be able to do it on a consistent basis. Perhaps also Russell and Hamilton if Mercedes' promised upgrades come good; again though I reckon it'd be on an inconsistent basis.

dimster75

If you as a fan where given a choice, what would this season bring? Max's 3rd world title. Lewis's 8th world title. Leclerc or Perez or Russell or sainz or even stroll first world title. Fernando's 3rd world title. Anything I've left out? The hypothesis assumes that racing is really exciting and everything comes down to the last race etc.

thebrokeness81

I would like to go into watching a race not knowing who will win.

Penguinho

_Assuming the racing is great and it comes down to the last race_, I'd rather have Lewis's 8th. First, it'd be an incredible achievement and probably cement his status as the GOAT. Second, it'd be an incredible engineering story, turning a mediocre car into a great one. Third, it'd be a nice cap on the 2021 drama. If Lewis's 8th is off the table, I'd rather have Max's third title than Fernando's. I'd rather have really any of those outcomes than Fernando's third title, because I am so fucking oversaturated with Fernando content right now and it'd be really nice if a journo could find time to write about how the 2023 rookie class is doing, or how the change of management and prospective sale are affecting Alfa Romeo, or do a deep dive on Alpine and what's going on there or literally anything other than "DAE love Fernando Alonso?????".

Nuclear_Geek

I'd love to see Alonso win the WDC. After the first race, I wondered if that might be a possibility - Aston should close the gap to Red Bull as the season goes on and Red Bull's reduction in wind tunnel time starts to hit their development. Unfortunately, I think the gap is just too big, so now I'm just hoping he gets a race win at some point this year. That seems a lot more plausible, I can dare hope for that.

121221L58

Leclerc first, Sainz first, Alonso 3rd in this order; don't care about the rest except hamilton 8th is the least favourable thing

dl064

I was hoping for Hamilton's 8th but alas, no. He's done alright fundamentally, Hamilton; can't complain. I want an Alonso win and I'll be quite happy. I wouldn't mind Piastri bringing Norris down to earth a bit.

rbryan06

I want a season something like 2012, where 4 or more different constructor wins at least 1 GP

Sacesss

Leclerc's maiden WDC or Magic's 3rd for sure.

thesaket

>Lewis's 9th world title. 👀 genuine mistake or 2021 hot take?

dimster75

Genuine mistake, phat finger pressed wrong tiny part of the screen.

naumectica

Checo getting the WDC. Him getting the WDC would be the cherry on top of how he manage to turn his career around after that win in Sakhir 2020. Definitely worth making a movie over.

dimster75

Realistically if anyone can challenge Max it's him till other cars catch up (if any team does).

Footlongpenetrator

Is it just me who thinks the new regulations are making races boring ? Qualifying isn't that important and everyone finishes where they should for the most part. You look at the best battles and races (excluding ones that were great due to weather/drama) from the past 5 years and basically all of them were great because it was a race long duel where drivers were pushed into differing strategies and taking risks whereas now the faster car overtakes and drives off and that's that. If the car with track position pits early to keep the track position they're only hurting themselves and delaying the inevitable now whereas it was a fun dynamic before.

Mahery92

I don't believe cars are necessarily bound to finish where they belong due to the current aero regs. It's still possible for a slower car to defend, so faster cars can still get stuck if they're not playing smart. Albon and Ocon in particular both showed it several times last year, using their superior top speeds to stall faster cars. I think it only looked like that in Jeddah because each of the 5 fastest teams looked like they had a decisive pace advantage compared to the next one, but looking at Haas and McLaren both had to really work for it despite being faster in clean air than the AT and the Williams. The current problem seems to be more that the gaps between teams were unexpectedly too big in Jeddah, except maybe in the lower midfield.

Astelli

It's not really the rules doing it, it's that the car at the front is so much faster than the others. There have been some interesting strategic and on-track battles within the Aston-Ferrari-Mercedes pack already this season, because the cars are all quite close.

Bredius88

They should start with the **immediate** cancellation of that absurd DRS. And forbid ANY interference from Liberty with any rules and regulations.

_waynex

2021 was the exception and not the norm . 2012 was a great season where we had 7 different drivers in the first 7 races, other than that the races are usually boring, but pre 2010 at least the races were a little bit more exciting than now

PM_me_British_nudes

>the faster car overtakes and drives off and that's that. At least we're getting that at the moment, the Mercedes dominant years didn't even have that most of the time. There was the odd occasion where Lewis had an issue in 2014 (for example) and started out of position, but even then the Mercedes was so OP that a podium was still a guarantee, no difference really to when Max starts out of position at the moment.

AnilP228

It's always been like this. This is what F1 is like without gimmicks or safety cars at the right time. The cars qualify in pace order. They then run to a pre-determined pace to make a one stopper work. It's not the chassis regulations, it's everything else. There just aren't enough variables. There were plenty of brilliant races last year. CoTA, Zandvoort, Silverstone, Austria, Jeddah, Hungary for example were all far more watchable that most races from 2014-16, 2017 etc.

KaamDeveloper

> You look at the best battles and races (excluding ones that were great due to weather/drama) from the past 5 years and basically all of them were great because it was a race long duel where drivers were pushed into differing strategies and taking risks whereas now the faster car overtakes and drives off and that's that. But that's exactly how it was before 2022. Drivers got overtaken and that was the end of it. 2022, the year of new regulations, was the first year in a long while where car which got overtaken fought back. I think the issue is, that 2023 field spread is a bit too much in race pace. I imagine, some of it may get resolved as teams bring upgrades but no miracles. RB maybe heading towards a 20+ win season

FrenkieFan

Last year there were a few duels where cars were able to follow each other for a few laps. Also after a driver got overtaken, like max and Charles in Bahrain/Jeddah/Austin. It’s only not that exciting this year so far because know one is close to Red Bull

NoirPochette

Having sat through the era of refueling. This is a lot better. There are a lot more meaningful battles in the midfield now than there used to be

OldWiseMann

The field spread is just big because of the new regulations. The new tweaks with the floor edge made it worse

naumectica

So what does Marko do with Tsunoda at this point? The guy is in his third season with AT, and although he's making progress (despite having a backmarker car), does he get the Giovinazzi treatment and let him go at the end of the season? Personally I would have liked to see Tsunoda get a chance with RBR, but it's clear that the team is content with Checo through 2024.

Mahery92

Keep him so they can get an all-Japanese lineup with Iwasa. Imo Tsunoda will beat De Vries, and RB will make him stay there as a measuring stick for RB rookies. His career will then depend on whether or not he can find himself another seat elsewhere like Sainz and Gasly before being let go like Kvyat was

thebrokeness81

I don't get what you mean. Tsunoda has performed as well as could be done with that car. 11th twice -- he needs to get into the points, sure. But his driving has been good

SyuusukeFuji

I think that the most likely scenario is that he will survive for 2024 as the measure for whoever junior takes de Vries seat. After that, well he should start knocking some doors in the paddock.

PM_me_British_nudes

I think he'll probably end up being a solid midfielder that's retained until someone better comes along. Granted though, we're only two races in, but he seems to be a lot more of a mature racer than he's been in the last few seasons.

drodrige

Yeah, it feels that this is one of the most uninspiring lineups AT/TR has had in recent years. I just don't see any of these drivers at RB.

PM_me_British_nudes

Fair point - I'm definitely not au fait with the feeder series; is there anyone standing out in the RBR young drivers pool?

Alfus

Iwasa, Hadjar and Lawson are the three who got a more realistic shot to enter F1

rodiraskol

Iwasa is currently the highest-placed RB junior (3rd) in F2. He was impressive as a rookie last year and he’s won one of the 4 races that have happened so far this year.

PassTimeActivity

Since Tsunoda's promotion, I've yet to see a RB junior get hyped and be in serious contention for an F1 race seat as much as Tsunoda was.

Sacesss

Bad situation because Tsunoda hasn't really been shining, but on the other hand Lawson may not be ready, and sacking Perez for Tsunoda may not be super smart if they expect other teams (Ferrari, Mercedes and AM) to step up their game.

southerncrossracers

People keep saying that Ricciardo has no chance of sitting in that Red Bull, but if they really did sack Perez it would make absolute sense for 2024: * Red Bull wouldn't want to put rookie Lawson straight into the RB, and it's unlikely that they will consider Tsunoda good enough for RB * So: 1+1 (in the team's favour) to Ricciardo while Lawson goes to AT for a year. * Winners all round: Lawson gets to develop at AT, out of the spotlight and pressure, while Ricciardo gets to find out if he really did lose his mojo or not (and I'd be betting heavily on "not"), and RB get an experienced race winner in the other seat * Noting that RB would not have to pay out to get Ricciardo, since they'd be paying out Perez * Ricciardo likes the same things in a car as Verstappen, gets along well with him, and even in those years at McLaren showed flashes of his old self; he's embedded in the team and part of the furniture * If Ricciardo recovers his mojo, great, Lawson gets two years to cure at AT instead of one * If he doesn't, Lawson can be brought in at the end of the year if he's performing * If neither Ricciardo nor Lawson perform, it's brought Red Bull into the driver market at a time other driver contracts for prospects are starting to expire, rather than needing to spend millions to buy out other drivers.

JebediahKerman3999

this is the thing: Ferrari and Mercedes will not be able to catch them

cafk

If the tules stay stable for coming years there's a possibility, so they still need to consider consistency over a midfielder with variable results. The whole reason they went for Perez and brought back Kvyat a few years ago was that their juniors weren't up to the expectations.

OldWiseMann

Unless Lawson is promising enough they keep him for another year

Defiant-Diver-6041

Could the '23 cars last a full race if they were the size of the '00 cars? Just saw a random photo of a F2002 and it looks like a go cart now lol

Sacesss

I mean, they couldn't fit those dimensions at all, everything works on a post '22 car exactly because of their dimensions. It's true that they could get smaller, but the '00 cars are way smaller than today, it would practically be a whole rules change.

Defiant-Diver-6041

Oh sorry, I meant from a refueling point of view

Sacesss

Oh okay sorry I misinterpreted. Actually yes, today the length and width of the car is due to the extreme aerodynamics devices on the car, a longer car gives a better downforce. The fuel tank could fit on that length without many issues, the problems would be on other devices.

Defiant-Diver-6041

I thought the cars were longer to accommodate the fuel since refueling's not allowed lol

Vaexa

[A huge chunk of modern F1 car length is something as simple as the comedy longue gearboxes](https://e1.365dm.com/15/09/2048x1152/max-verstappen-engine_3346583.jpg). Back in the day F1 cars had remarkably short gearboxes so it's not a technical limitation.

TheHumbleWizard

What if I told you the F2002 had a larger fuel tank than todays F1 cars? The length of modern F1 has almost nothing to do with the size of the fuel tank, it’s a combination of new safety standards and aerodynamic advantages.

[deleted]

When did Max “surpass” Lewis as the best driver on the grid? Today, if asked who the best driver on the grid is, most reasonable fans would answer Max. If you asked this exact same question in 2018, almost everyone would have said Lewis. Somewhere between 2018 and 2023, a crossover happened. But when exactly was the crossover point?

Mahery92

2021/2022, when Max started to win the wdc. Many fans just don't look much more closely than that imo, "champion= the best". Truth is, I don't think it's possible to give an objective answer. Personally at least, I wouldn't be able to say who's better between Alonso, Max or Lewis, and I'm still a bit uncertain about how to rate Leclerc, Russell and Norris compared to them tbh

serioxha

I agree with this completely. Currently there isn't a definitive best driver on the grid.

thebrokeness81

I don't believe he has.
