He's been the go to substitute for Brundle for the last few years. I wonder who will do that now, hopefully Button.
I don't find him as annoying as a lot of people here seem to but I can't deny that Button would be a big improvement.
Iād love to see Ant take Brundleās spot. He was fantastic on the WEC commentary last season. Really great to have takes from someone who had been competing in the same series just the season before. I know heās not driven in F1 recently but has still been pretty involved with his time in the Mercedes sim.
I was never a fan of him and don't even get me started on his COVID shit, but his commentary is insane because he is able to call out strategies and details that no one else does
I think Karun's analysis is fantastic, his commentary is meh though. His voice and energy is more suited for the post-race analysis than live commentary.
Yep, similarly to Ted. I get the impression that, like me and lots of other people, they both often wait to be spoken to rather than speaking up of their own accord.
I do think the Sky F1 team is too big.
One of the things I enjoyed about the BBC/C4 coverage was the small group of consistent regular presenters. They built up more of a rapport.
James Allen is still my favourite commentator, Murray aside of course. The right level of knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism. Legard was an absolute nightmare.
You could feel Brundle getting annoyed at Legard without him even having to say anything to him lol.
Also in case you didnt know. Steve, Jim and Louise are still with ITV for BTCC.
Random wondering...
Crofty goes to (pretty much) every race, but is he in a commentary box for the races?
So technically he goes to every race but doesn't actually get to see the race in person, would that be right?
Cos when they show him in the build up he's usually stood in a cabin looking thing surrounded by screens.
Yes, he is always in the commentary box. So technically he watches off a screen like us. But I believe some tracks have commentary boxes that you can look out of so they could see part of the track (I am no expert but there's a video from Channel 4 behind the scenes of their commentators at the British GP this year and you can see the natural light from the window, and Coulthard looks out to see what the start is like as it's a better view than the TV camera to judge who has got the better start)
Mad to think! At some point I'd just be like "I've done so many of these and never just sat back to watch and enjoy it, let me have Silverstone off so I can actually be a fan again!"
I miss them doing the On The Marbles podcast. Lee McKenzie, Coulthard and Webber chatting together was great, they had some really good insights and Steve was actually great on it, funny and a bit nuts.
Itās telling that we all refer to them as āgreat when Brundle isnāt thereā. Brundle truly is the GOAT of F1 colour commentators. He learnt great skills correcting the random garble of rubbish that sometimes came out of Murray Walkerās extreme excitement, and has continued to put them to great use correcting the bollocks that Crofty often talks. Plus, heās driven more F1 cars than any other person on the planet, giving him an enormous breadth of knowledge of how these things drive, and compare to each other.
I also consider Brundle to be the least biased towards British drivers. Sometimes he can't help it, but most of the time, it's just the racer in him assessing situations pretty much from a neutral perspective.
He talks his fair share of bullshit aswell... Some of it tho I have to admit is just inevitable trying to analyse a live sport in the heat of the moment, being excited yourself and trying to bring that to the viewer. Goes for everyone, I think the community (myself included) is often too harsh to the commentators little mistakes
No GOATifi or Pual in the paddock next year? Who is RPM gonna shit on for content if Lance Stroll gets found guilty of treason for disgracing the country of Canada (hypothetically speaking)?
Iām an American and I started watching in the 2018 season. It took me a long time to realize Crofty wasnāt saying Porter Ester when they went to him. So heāll always be Porter Ester to me
Nothing of value was lost. No interesting insight, personality of a dishwasher, his rapport with Crofty lacked some professionalism compared to his other peers, and he strikes me as having a massive chip on his shoulder about how his career went.
Brundle, Rosberg, Button, and Davidson is a strong rotation. I wouldn't mind Chandhok here and there as well to see how he does but his current role suits him.
So Sky will do after remiving Herbert and di Resta ? Replace them or just Sky squad will be smaller ? And if they will be replaced who will be favourite ones to join ?
Full line up: Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Naomi Schiff, Martin Brundle, Damon Hill, Karun Chandhok, Anthony Davidson, Natalie Pinkham, Ted Kravitz, Danica Patrick, Simon Lazenby, David Croft and Rachel Brookes

Why do people hate Danica so much?
She is still an Indycar race winner and I find her insights valuable.
She is not as good as Brundle, Button or maybe even Rosberg, but I would happily listen to her any day over Herbert, Di Resta, Hill or Lazenby.
And I'd much prefer her, or any other ex racing driver (e.g. Naomie Schiff), to do Comms in FP1 rather than Natalie Pinkham, who just feels like she is there to fill a quota, and doesn't seem comfortable.
I donāt hate Patrick but I felt like she detracted from the coverage last year. They signed her for her name and to appeal to American fans, but she didnāt bring a lot of insight about the series.
Pinks has been covering Motorsport since the 2000s and F1 specifically since 2012. She has a knowledge of the drivers and teams, she started out in the pit lane. She may not be a driver but I expect she knows a lot more about F1 than many people. They obviously have wanted to put more focus on female announcers (like bringing in Naomi Schiff), but she wouldnāt be there if she didnāt have a lot of experience. It doesnāt strike me as a quota thing at all.
Schiff has been super solid. She seems to have a very good rapport with Lewis specifically so I'm always excited to see those two on screen together. They did a wonderful segment that was largely about their blackness in motorsport back in the we race as one campaign and that was where I really noticed that she's quite a strong interviewer. Very good coverage for the most part and rarely talks rubbish like some of the old farts Sky keeps around.
I really disliked her the first couple times not for anything to do with her personality, I think her americanisms and willingness to correct others is admirable and charming.
What I disliked is that she was often wrong and sometimes seemed to forget who the drivers are. Which is a little unforgivable when there are only 20 of them and it's your job to tell us about what they did for the last couple hours.
Don't hate her, but she doesn't add a lot.
Glad sky are getting rid of the dross. Herbert and Di Resta aren't very good. Get Rosberg and Button to do more races and l am happy.
It goes back to her first season where it was clear she knew shit about F1 - she didnāt need to be an expert, but she didnāt sound like she had even watched more than a couple of Grands Prix. She has clearly seen more F1 because last season she was able to make relevant conversation.
So they just reduced the amount of people employed basically? I hope Brundle is doing better health wise this year and will be available as usual. Found it weird he missed many races, (unless its stated in the contract to miss a certain amount of races or he was dealing with health issues)
I guess Naomi and Danica were new hires last year, so they had more than usual throughout 2022 - it just wasnāt so noticeable since Rosberg was barred from entering the paddock and stuck to appearing via zoom.
A couple of years ago now, I think just before the 2020 season, Brundle had said he was contracted for about 17 races per year, he is getting on in years and has had a few health issues so it's no surprise he wants to slow down on the travelling
Easy decision to switch to the other feed for Palmer and Hinch/Buxton. Palmer is hands down the best commentator and most neutral which is what commentators should be.
Honestly wouldn't be surprised if we get Daniel doing a bit, close friends with one of the team (Pinks), great personality and will be at a loose end mostly during the weekend so why not. Even if he's planning on coming back in a race seat, it will set him up for post F1.
Daniel just doesn't strike me as someone who is very knowledgable. So I'm not sure he'd have a lot to contribute. He has a great personality like you say, so maybe some role other than commentator.
Why are they gone? No one knows right now. Probably downsizing as the team was quite big.
Why are people happy? The Reddit hive mind decided they were bad.
Damn, I kinda liked DiResta. Button is good too, and I think Brundle is *really* good in big moments. Brundle and Crofty were aces on the last lap in Abu Dhabi in ā21.
DiResta had a different energy, which I canāt really put my finger on, but I enjoyed him.
I donāt think anyone in the team will do all races as they have rotated more often in recent years - except for Crofty, somehow that guy has the energy and endurance to do the whole season.
Is Rosberg allowed in the paddock now? Or will we have to endure more live broadcasts from his bedroom because his Mrs has banned him from using the dining room table?
I think a certain youtuber will be delighted...

Ant Davidson would be my guess now he is fully retired from racing.
Really enjoy Ant. More airtime please
Iād love to see Ant take Brundleās spot. He was fantastic on the WEC commentary last season. Really great to have takes from someone who had been competing in the same series just the season before. I know heās not driven in F1 recently but has still been pretty involved with his time in the Mercedes sim.
Ant is wonderful, heās warm and knowledgeable and just so excited to be there
Yeah heās really a pleasure to listen to.
Give me Ant and Button.
How many times did he retire from racing? Seems like a lot lol
Button in Japan was sooo good, calling the ideal strategy like that. It was a joy to watch
Button would be a great choice. My personal hope is on Sky having stolen Coulthard though.
Coulthard owns the company that produces Channel 4's F1 coverage so I would imagine it's very unlikely that he would move across
scot for a scot.
Him and Nico show any recent ex drivers are great. I'd love to get Coulthard on there as well this season
I can't stand Roseburg.
I was never a fan of him and don't even get me started on his COVID shit, but his commentary is insane because he is able to call out strategies and details that no one else does
Pls, need more Scottish brogue on the broadcast.
Wish they could have an increased rotation of former drivers. Unfortunately many of them are hired by other media companies
Or they are retired from F1 but do other racing.
Hopefully more Button.
[ŃŠ“алено]
Well yes but Button was capable of winning a title. ^I'm^just^kidding
Romo was capable too. It's just the rest of the team that wasn't lol being a Cowboys fan is a painful existence.
Theyāve removed the covid restrictions for next year so potentially Nico/Jenson hybrid
Iām personally in favor of Karun
I think Karun's analysis is fantastic, his commentary is meh though. His voice and energy is more suited for the post-race analysis than live commentary.
Yep, similarly to Ted. I get the impression that, like me and lots of other people, they both often wait to be spoken to rather than speaking up of their own accord.
Love Karun. Always give good insight.
Oh yeah I forgot about Karun. He's good too
Agreed the more Yensen the better. I've never been a fan of PDR but still sucks for him.
As much as it would pain me to separate him from Jacques, Alex Brundle would ofc do well
Alexās commentary tone is so much like his father, just younger. I hope he steps up into F1
I like him, he gave us a lot of insider info that the rest was afraid to leak. Also he's often in contrary to most "brits are the best" sky pundits.
He was also just straight up wrong a lot of the time
I do think the Sky F1 team is too big. One of the things I enjoyed about the BBC/C4 coverage was the small group of consistent regular presenters. They built up more of a rapport.
I used to love the ITV coverage for the same reason. People said that James Allen was boring but then BBC went beyond that with Jonathan Legard.
Do you mean Jonathan āproblemā Legard?
"Oh Mark Webber's gone right up there!'"
āOn a chargeā Legard
Up the hill, round the bend, battle is joined.
If it wasn't for Legard we wouldn't have had that one wonderful season of Martin and DC commentary
James Allen was a lot of things but boring wasn't one of them.
Nothing wrong with having the technically sound guy to throw to for breaking news in the pit lane, like what Ted used to beā¦
The season's too long and there's coverage of practice sessions and the like. I'm more surprised Crofty doesn't get the odd weekend off.
That's a fair point, but they could rotate 3 maybe 4 pundits around
Random wondering... Crofty goes to (pretty much) every race, but is he in a commentary box for the races? So technically he goes to every race but doesn't actually get to see the race in person, would that be right? Cos when they show him in the build up he's usually stood in a cabin looking thing surrounded by screens.

Mad to think! At some point I'd just be like "I've done so many of these and never just sat back to watch and enjoy it, let me have Silverstone off so I can actually be a fan again!"
Yeah Murray used to always go on about looking out the commentary box to see certain drivers go past.
The channel 4 team is quality even with Coulthardās cultism
I miss them doing the On The Marbles podcast. Lee McKenzie, Coulthard and Webber chatting together was great, they had some really good insights and Steve was actually great on it, funny and a bit nuts.
I grew up with David Hobbs, Bob Varsha, and Steve Matchet, on speed. Exactly the same crew every race for years, and I loved it.
More Anthony Davidson and Jenson Button please. I truly enjoy both of them whenever Brundle is off. Edit: *Jenson!
Itās telling that we all refer to them as āgreat when Brundle isnāt thereā. Brundle truly is the GOAT of F1 colour commentators. I find he's more biased for any younger driver than the more experienced ones. I love that he's excited about young talent
He talks his fair share of bullshit aswell... Some of it tho I have to admit is just inevitable trying to analyse a live sport in the heat of the moment, being excited yourself and trying to bring that to the viewer. Perhaps Sky can think about permanently replacing Damon Hill with Button while they are at it.

RPM will be happy.

Danica still only on American races right?
I'd assume so yeah
Phew

I guess Naomi and Danica were new hires last year, so they had more than usual throughout 2022 - it just wasnāt so noticeable since Rosberg was barred from entering the paddock and stuck to appearing via zoom.
Brundle usually misses some races so he can do some racing in another series. I think he tends to avoid some because of the travel too.

Nah not yet, give the bloke some time off!
Is Nico allowed back in the paddock yet? Or still trying to phone it in from home to get around the vax rules?
He's allowed back this year, they've dropped the vaccine mandate
RPM is sprinting to his garage
Herbert and Di Resta for Rosberg? Yeah, that works for me
I'd rather have Button full time.
Dont make jokes about this if it isnt true... my heart cant take the let down if he does do the broadcast...
Farewell Paul āthe Grand Prix killerā di Resta. You will be missed by the entire rocket powered Mohawk community.
No more meejums
What a shame. Di Resta's expert commentary was fantastic. Very insightful, very current. Shame.
That's a shame. I always liked how frank he was, even though that made him no friends and Reddit hated his guts.
There's Frank and then there's bias.
And there's bias , and then there's "I'm still salty that Vettel won 4 WDC while I'm a nobody"
Ok, now do Damon Hill.
LETS GOOOOOO
I guess more Nico Rosberg and Karun when Martin doesn't commentate
Are they going to replace him with an instagram influencer too?
What am I missing? Why are they gone and why is everyone so happy?
Why are they gone? No one knows right now. Probably downsizing as the team was quite big. Why are people happy? The Reddit hive mind decided they were bad.
Hallelujah
The fuckin nerve of him šš
When they say also, who else are they talking about?
Sky hurting? Everyoneās getting the axe
TBH, i do not mind if they swop out the commentator.... so at least it will be fresh Brundle imo is the only constant i wish to see there....
THANK GOD! The devil in Paul is finally gone.
Itās a partyyyyy!!!
Sucks, i liked his coverage
Damn, I kinda liked DiResta. Button is good too, and I think Brundle is *really* good in big moments. Brundle and Crofty were aces on the last lap in Abu Dhabi in ā21. DiResta had a different energy, which I canāt really put my finger on, but I enjoyed him.

I donāt think anyone in the team will do all races as they have rotated more often in recent years - except for Crofty, somehow that guy has the energy and endurance to do the whole season.
It's actually mental he hasn't missed a race since they started. Lazenby I think had the same record until 2020.
PDR was never full time so idk why this would make his position full time... PDR and Rosberg even did the same races before when Brundle was off.
Is Rosberg allowed in the paddock now? Or will we have to endure more live broadcasts from his bedroom because his Mrs has banned him from using the dining room table?

Damn that's a shame, I know he gets a lot of hate around here but I've never understood it myself. Will be a shame to see Herbert and di Resta gone
Oh no! Anyways...
Rocketpoweredmohawk is a happy, happy man right now
