I feel kinda sad for Ederson. Imagine being one of the best keepers atm and still being number 2 in the NT. Field players are subbed eventually but goalkeepers hardly ever switch during a game. Crazy how much quality Brazil have in goal.
Yeah maybe i didnt covney the message correctly. I meant to say he turns it up whenever he faces us. He has good performances against other teams but against us its always a seasonal highlight
I didn't mean to single you out. In general people seem to think he only plays well against us but for years he's been saving Gladbach's and Switzerland's asses. I'm surprised he never left.
Ochoa during the world cup is the equivalent of Sommer against Bayern.
Except in case Sommer is channeling that energy over to international tournaments
If you’re Flick, how do you line up vs Spain? The two big changes I’d make are Ginter for Schlotterbeck and Füllkrug for Havertz. But I’m terrified that Flick is gonna overreact and do something weird, like starting Kehrer and Hoffman as fullbacks
I’d probably start like this:
Neuer
Klostermann-Ginter-Rüdiger-Raum
Kimmich-Gündogan
Gnabry-Müller-Musiala
Füllkrug
Sané could also start for either Müller or Gnabry, but I would honestly not start him.
Rather sub him on, once Müller gets tired.
Goretzka could start and his physicality might very well help against Spain, but he didn’t look interested in his defensive duties and our midfield looked worse without Gündogan.
If Sané gets fit he might even try Gnabry instead of Havertz but yeah, Füllkrug would be a way better idea than to go with Havertz again.
Defensively I'd try Klostermann for Süle who's definitely too slow for that agile Spanish team. I agree on Ginter for Stolperbeck though.
Is Klostermann fit again? I’d forgotten about him. Don’t envy Flick in any case, not having any real fullbacks besides Raum doesn’t give him a lot to work with, and it’s not like the CBs are all great either. But doing more with less is what separates the great from the good I guess

Well and that he can only play one way. He's useless off the ball, and is bad at helping in the build up, but if u just need someone to bang in chances in the box hes good. Not worth the wage or the ego and everything else he brings though
I saw this on twitter and I will bring it on here as well. The majority of the Germany team are Bayern players and the majority of the Spanish team are Barca players, so it is going to be an exact repeat of Bayern vs Barca. Don't tell me this won't happen and break my delusional bubble.
And btw, to anybody who wants to watch another Barca defeat to Bayern, tune into the UWCL match between Bayern and Barca that is scheduled for today.
Eden Hazard is a moron. Guy’s talking about focusing on football when he’s played about 5 minutes in the last 3 years lol. Go find Süle and share a happy meal fatty.
You know what is also unnecessary? Implying that our players protesting was responsible for the result of the game, and then proceeding to play like absolute garbage against Canada.
It’s not that deep. No one is being imprisoned or killed for being fat. It’s not something you’re born with and can’t change or are religiously persecuted for.
I never saw you say something when myself and the rest of the sub makes McDonald’s jokes about Süle.
I think he said that when he was specifically asked about the German's team protest. His response was that he wants to focus on what's happening on the pitch. If anything, the fact that he barely played in the last 3years is all the more reason for him to focus on his performance first.
It wasn't a diss in anyway, Eden is just that kind of nonchalant guy, especially in interviews.
I know, I just felt like being rude about him because of how dumb his statement was. A minor protest does not have any effect on the game. We can see that both from how Germany and Belgium played.
I don't mind it at all. But they've walked face-first into poo several times -- remember Kimmich's virtue signalling about the Covid vaccination programme when it was then revealed that he was not vaccinated himself?
The pose before the match is *irrelevant* but the context is frustrating: these bozos couldn't fashion a chance against Japan so the past week of hemming and hawing about the armband nobody asked for proved to be a distraction... and then they do that dumb pose. It's not just that they're "woke" but that they're so arrogant and think they're above-it-all, so much so that they'd rather speak about the armband than respect their opponent and focus on their opponent and give their supporters a 100% effort. And now Germany is on the verge of elimination in the group stage, yet again.
I don't have any strong opinion about wokeness but I'm quite intolerant of performative hollow gestures. Or, in this case, performative attempts at hollow gestures.
Yeah of course I don't think it influenced the game. Tbh I don't think he meant it either. Thing is that's the kind of joke you make to your buddy at the bar or playing in Sunday's league and probably shouldn't make on TV but that's just the kind of guy he is. Casual to a fault.
And the part about not sending political messages is also his way of saying "stop asking me about it".
Obviously I'm also being protective of him but having seen him on the NT for more than 10years, he really didn't mean anything serious about it.
You could make the case that he should know better but again he's just that (over) casual, nonchalant of a guy.
Lille fan here. I agree that he's extremely casual and nonchalant, and yet I too find what he said extremely stupid.
Sure, they are not mutually exclusive, but pretty much all OP said was that it was stupid for Eden to say what he said
Yes I agree that it was stupid of him to say that.
The thing is, once the headlines came out people, understandably, all jumped on him for his comments.
Of course, he should have known better and not say it but he's basically just saying whatever goes through his mind atm, doesn't matter if it's clever or stupid. My point was just that he may not be the brightest guy but he's not the moronic asshole some people would think he is based on that comment.
Would kimmich at rb help anything? I don't think Germany are gonna suddenly stop conceding the chances they did or finishing the chances they got if he's at rb. I don't think its the worst idea, but its gotta make sense.
how do you guys think the atmosphere in the german team is? in general, obviously there is some kind of hangover mood today
for me the gündogan interview yesterday was pretty spicy
the second goal was the "easiest goal ever conceded at a world cup" statement does sound like internal trouble to me
Manu called it a catastrophe and Müller said that admitting defeat is emotionally difficult so obviously they're not having a great time currently. I don't know how well they get along in general, dfb doesn't have good online content like the english squad channel does for example. Obviously we can tell that some players are friends like Brandt and Havertz, but overall the team doesn't seem as close as the 2010/2014 team did. Gündogan's comments surprised me though.
Tbh the defending yesterday was atrocious. I can fully understand the disappointment from all guys which are used to competent defenders. The comment about the second goal is completely valid.
True but I do often wonder what is the point of interviews if you’re not honest. So many players just give these vague non-statements so as not to throw anyone under the bus when we can all clearly see what happened.
But obviously you never want to single your teammates out publicly. It’s a bit of a double edged sword.
saying that teammate x sucked and was the reason we lost the game might be honest, but it would be very dumb to admit publicly because team chemistry is a thing and managing players who secretly hate each other is not fun. A good team player also has to protect the team's public image and not air dirty laundry for all to see and read.
i prefer just giving the media the classic vanilla statements to shut them up and then talking in private or you do it like oli kahn "WE NEED COJONES"
it strikes me like gündogan makes that statement in public, but he wouldnt tell schlotterbeck to his face that his current play stinks (cant confirm of course)
this team is not a team in my opinion
Man, Havertz for Vizekusen was a joy to watch. It's absolutely crazy they seamlessly replaced him with Wirtz (when Wirtz was fit). Also, I simply don't understand players moving to clubs that don't play in a tactical set-up that makes sense for them. Havertz was lethal in Bosz's 433 system (cutting inside or drifting in the halfspace from the right winger position \[Valverde anyone?\]; or playing as an attacking 8 - kind of a 10 - in other games) and then disappeared when he was played as a striker (see yesterday or at various times for Chelsea since his transfer). Yes, he's only 23 and won the CL at Chelasea but if I was Havertz, I would call my agent immediately. (It's sad though, Germany has so many good players for the 10 spot - Musiala, Müller, Götze, Havertz, Brandt - but the creative, technical 10 just isn't needed anymore tactically in most cases \[except for at Bayern\]. Who stlil plays with a true 10?)
Davies was excellent early on and then faded. He also seemed to hold himself back a bit, he didn’t chase back with the team on a few Belgium counters. Something to do with a light hamstring injury before the game (why was he playing then ?????).
David didn’t look anything special. Buchanan and Larin seemed more effective in the game.
> Eden Hazard on Germany's gesture: "Yeah, but then they lost the game. They would've been better off not doing it and winning. We're here to play football, I'm not here to send a political message, there are people better placed for that. We want to focus on football" [@RMCsport]
Spicy
Everybody knows what’s for real and what isn’t.
The German NT and players wanted to get sucked off by the media and “fans” (Which? Whom?) for the *intention* to wear a fkn armband. If they had won it would be forgotten, but they lost and looked poor — so criticism is merited. Hazard and his NT sucked against Canada too but his criticism is valid. They’re there to compete for the World Cup, they need to take tk seriously. The Japanese did.
He said the first bit as a joke. What is a stupid one to make in an interview? Yeah sure but that's just how he is.
If any player/team wants to make a stand or send a message, I personally think good for them but Eden is just not that kind of football player, he's basically a small town, kinda hillbilly guy who just wants to play and doesn't think much about the rest.
It wasn't an eloquent or elaborate answer but having seen hundreds of his interviews, there's really no point to read too much into it.
It's not about how long it takes, I think the argument is that it's a distraction (obviously the players talked about it beforehand and it might make it more difficult to to focus 100%). No idea if that's the case, but I do find it...interesting how Hazard put it.
How much brainpower and time do you think it takes for them to agree to that? And they have free time repeatedly, so it probably never was a topic during training. So instead of playing playstation, they probably came together for a team meeting, agreed to that, and that's it.
Sané remains doubtful
Coaches and players seem to think everything is fine and we just need to focus and be more efficient
I got a bad feeling for sunday
Nah just root for an Asian or African team at this point. They are playing for their lives in this tournament. Only Iran and Qatar have been disappointing. Tbf Iran has turmoil back home and Qatar.. Is Qatar
Didn't watch the AFCON and didn't follow the Cameroon football team before this WC. But very happy for that guy, he's having a great season and deserves all the good things coming his way
I dont know, do we have some others from our guys actually won a game in the WC (beside the french guys) ?
I think we as a team have a nightmare start in the WC ... injuries are killing us, results are not so good and confidence is going down ... this WC can change the whole course of our season
While i hate the DFB leadership as much as everyone else... a lot of problems (i.e lack of certain player types) won't suddenly disappear if you change out key personnel at the DFB...
I follow many well known tactic bloggers from the UK and Germany on twitter.
And it is incredible to see their tweets during and after yesterday's match. They all were praising the style of play and tactics as one of the best at the World Cup and nearly all wrote that the main reason their lost was because they became too comfy
This gives me a bit hope for Spain. Because i don't think we will get complacent during the game for them
The problem with Flick’s tactics is that it relies very much on CBs that are both fast and able to position themselves. Otherwise a long ball between the two CBs always ends up with conceding a goal even when dominating the game.
Same story with his second season at Bayern. Boateng was too slow, Alaba out of position too often. I wonder what he could do with Upa and De Ligt instead.
Yeah and actually if you watch the key moments of the game again, Germany were really good at times. There is way too much revisionism after a result. Suddenly Germany are terrible because they lost. Yes it is a massive danger in a 3 game format.
But they lost because of two mistakes, and I suppose there was a third which could have been a Japan goal too. But ultimately they were far better, and missed plenty of chances themselves.
Contrast that to Belgium, who were absolutely terrible against Canada. Based on how both teams played, Belgium are more likely to lose their next game than Germany are. But Germany are in crisis and Belgium are top of their group.
I don't think Germany is that bad, honestly. I think if they pick up intensity and concentration, they'll be fine. They played really good for an hour, just didn't convert their chances and then got comfy, like you said.
Any ideas for the line up on Sunday? Also, if feels like this team hasn’t been the same since the semi finals of euros in 2016. Obviously, excluding the 2017 confederation cup win. Hopefully, flick can figure things out by 2024
Man, if Germany somehow wins against Spain, the entirety of the group would be flipped on its head. It would be bedlam. I can’t wait and hope we somehow find a way to win.
Exactly. In the Anime, Japan is facing the same crisis we have (decent team but no real striker), so they create one while putting all strikers around high school age in blue lock. Theres only kne winner and the losers all are not allowed to ever play for the NT again. Really good stuff btw
Truly unfortunate how this World Cup has turned out for Germany. Possibly the last World Cup for a few players as well. I also wanted to see Kimmich, Goretzka, etc in the knock outs. Oh well… we must beat Spain.
Do any of you think we can genuinely beat them? After their 7-0 thrashing, i don’t see how we can tbh.
Flick’s Germany would struggle to generate clear chances against any team, up to and including Costa Rica. They’d make Navas look like a god, like always.
Look where the Costa Rica players play. They started a guy who plays for the Sunderland reserve team iirc. The rest mostly plays in the Costa Rican league which is not very good
Neymar just got injured 👀👀👀
https://twitter.com/geglobo/status/1595880110044975109/photo/1 damn....
Now I don't wish injury on anyone, but if he's injured already, it better be for at least 4 months.
Mbappe alone would be still enough to hurt Bayern. He is the core of the goals
Neymar has been far better this season
mbappe scored against big teams, real, bayern, city past 2 seasons. neymar didn't.
Yeah but every bit helps.
Barely a week in and possibly have the goal of the tournament
Holy shit that was a beautiful goal
WOW! That was 🔥🔥🔥
I hate the diving Brazil divas with a passion. Wouldn't mind someone actually giving them a reason to roll and cry around
Alison Becker from Hamburg
I feel kinda sad for Ederson. Imagine being one of the best keepers atm and still being number 2 in the NT. Field players are subbed eventually but goalkeepers hardly ever switch during a game. Crazy how much quality Brazil have in goal.
Dude this has been Ter Stegen's life the last couple of years. Sometimes you're just unlucky. C'est la vie
Ederson is better in terms of passing but Alisson is the better shot stopper and overall.
Was in Lecce today and someone said "Forza Bayern Monaco"
If this game doesn’t have at least one red I will be really disappointed
Nah nah nah man, not Bela Rethy
One observation Ochoa and Sommer are brothers. They only turn up on specific circumstances
Sommer is super underrated. He’s genuinely a very good keeper, not just against us
Yeah maybe i didnt covney the message correctly.
I have them both on my World Cup fantasy squad and it’s impossible to choose which one to play lol. They’re both such big game players
Ochoa during the world cup is the equivalent of Sommer against Bayern. Except in case Sommer is channeling that energy over to international tournaments
You didn’t see him at the euros?
Sommer is the "International tournaments + Bayern" Man. Man stopped Mbappe pen
Tbf he’s pretty excellent generally too he just plays with a crap Gladbach
Concedes 5 against any other team but us. He turns exceptional everytime we face Gladbach.
It’s really more on Gladbach midfield/defence than him honestly but yes he does turn up big time against us.
Next match should be a shithouse epic, prediction: Serbia 2:1 Brasil
First red card incoming
my god the last scene....imagine the memes if that goes in
Fuck zdf and his ads cutting of the replay cunts
The 2nd half was great. Especially the ending
If there was a chance for a penalty check but then the ref called the game before the ball could been out. Do they still able to review it?
The keeper almost fumbled it loooool
He really hit the SIUUUUUU against Ronaldo lmao
Kudus is a beast
How are they lot checkin VAR for that?
That feels like a very soft penalty call tbh
Refereeing has been all over the place.
Ronaldo tax :(
If only there was some kind of nickname for that
what even was that pen
If you’re Flick, how do you line up vs Spain? The two big changes I’d make are Ginter for Schlotterbeck and Füllkrug for Havertz. But I’m terrified that Flick is gonna overreact and do something weird, like starting Kehrer and Hoffman as fullbacks

The bloke literally ran past Gore for the first goal which was hard to watch because boy is never really prone to errors.
Neuer Kehrer - Süle - Rüdiger - Raum Kimmich - Goretzka Gnabry - Musiala - Sané Moukoko/Füllkrug Gündogan back in for Goretzka against Costa Rica

😂, you are funny.
I want some of that hopium you're having... I really don't see how we're supposed to win against Spain, they were stellar
Look at the Costa Rica lineup and what clubs they play for

Bayern’s back line is better than the NMT’s.
but they aren't coached by clueless Xavi currently, while we have Flick who refused to admit he made mistakes and blamed everything on the players
We need to have an insane GD then. If Japan also beats Costa Rica...
If that is what's necessary to advance they'll make it happen. I'm sure of it.

Yes
So was there any point in his career that Havertz was considered good?
Havertz was absolutely brilliant for Leverkusen, what are you on about?

Why is it one or the other? What do they have to do each other?
TIL Eden Hazard is an Alice Weidel fan
i agree with him but having that in mind their own performance was pretty shit, needed the refs to win the game
You agree with him, but also acknowledge that this gesture had absolutely zero effect on the games since Belgium got dominated by Canada. Interesting.
What kinda argument is that. As if a gesture of 10 seconds has any impact on the outcome of a football game.
It's not about how long it takes, I think the argument is that it's a distraction (obviously the players talked about it beforehand and it might make it more difficult to to focus 100%). No idea if that's the case, but I do find it...interesting how Hazard put it.
If anything, agreeing as a group to make a stand should bring them together, not be a distraction.
How much brainpower and time do you think it takes for them to agree to that? And they have free time repeatedly, so it probably never was a topic during training. So instead of playing playstation, they probably came together for a team meeting, agreed to that, and that's it.
Sané remains doubtful Coaches and players seem to think everything is fine and we just need to focus and be more efficient I got a bad feeling for sunday

Nah just root for an Asian or African team at this point. They are playing for their lives in this tournament. Only Iran and Qatar have been disappointing. Tbf Iran has turmoil back home and Qatar.. Is Qatar
unleash the choupo!
Choupo with the captain's armband for the game against Switzerland !!!
Was he ever captain before? I swear at Afcon he was warming the bench half the time. Good for him man.
Didn't watch the AFCON and didn't follow the Cameroon football team before this WC. But very happy for that guy, he's having a great season and deserves all the good things coming his way
Bayern needs a real 9 a real stricker

Decent striker, Flick has to give him a chance
My mom used to be quite good at stricken, I can ask her
Any news on Mazraoui?
It won’t keep him out for long, or at least isn’t expected to
It's taking too long let's just hope the best for him
Not yet, but they don't expect him to be out for long
Maybe just being paranoid, but I have a bad feeling since it has taken this long..
The opposite, bad news would have arrived by now.
I dont know, do we have some others from our guys actually won a game in the WC (beside the french guys) ? I think we as a team have a nightmare start in the WC ... injuries are killing us, results are not so good and confidence is going down ... this WC can change the whole course of our season
Netherlands, De Ligt
forgot about him ... he actually had decent game as well
Mazraoui was great until got injured, too. Morocco as a whole did alright in 0-0 against Croatia.
Sadly not really, but he was played out of position.
I actually hope for another group stage exit resulting in a full meltdown. Only that way there is a chance for real change in the DFB.
While i hate the DFB leadership as much as everyone else... a lot of problems (i.e lack of certain player types) won't suddenly disappear if you change out key personnel at the DFB...
I know and I don't expect that but a change in leadership is a first step in tackling those problems. And I just dont wanna see Bierhoff anymore.
Yeah, absolutely on board with kicking out the guys on top. And while we are at it, let's also do that with UEFA and FIFA as well..
Do you still have hopes on it?
I follow many well known tactic bloggers from the UK and Germany on twitter. And it is incredible to see their tweets during and after yesterday's match. They all were praising the style of play and tactics as one of the best at the World Cup and nearly all wrote that the main reason their lost was because they became too comfy This gives me a bit hope for Spain.
How many genuine chances did Germany carve out?
I don't think Germany is that bad, honestly. I think if they pick up intensity and concentration, they'll be fine. They played really good for an hour, just didn't convert their chances and then got comfy, like you said.
Any ideas for the line up on Sunday? Also, if feels like this team hasn’t been the same since the semi finals of euros in 2016. Obviously, excluding the 2017 confederation cup win. Hopefully, flick can figure things out by 2024
The main problem is we need a striker because Werner or Havertz up front sucks ass and our defense is shit to say the least.
Man, if Germany somehow wins against Spain, the entirety of the group would be flipped on its head. It would be bedlam. I can’t wait and hope we somehow find a way to win.
I hope this doesn’t come off as rude but the incessant blue lock jokes have become pretty unfunny quickly.
I have no idea what that is
anime about a soccer team iirc
No offense against Costa Rica, but their weren't an opponent at all. Just looking at some goals they conceded said everything
Flick’s Germany would struggle to generate clear chances against any team, up to and including Costa Rica. They’d make Navas look like a god, like always.
Look where the Costa Rica players play. They started a guy who plays for the Sunderland reserve team iirc. The rest mostly plays in the Costa Rican league which is not very good
Not if Havertz play
No, because our NT has been terrible since years and have not given me any reason to believe.
