And he's on a snap count so using his snaps to practice a position he should never be in. This has to be the dumbest coaching decision I've heard in awhile.
Typical reddit. You don't need to be a coach to criticize. If you see a shitty actor win a razzy or a fraud accountant go to jail do you have to be in those professions to criticize? It's dumb. Plain and simple and you don't need to be a an NFL coach to see that. The stupidity on this sub and the internet always amazes me. Do you seriously think so little of yourself you need to be a professional to have an opinion on something? Do you just stare at a wall all day with zero thoughts in your head because you're too dumb to have one unless properly trained?
Except he’s not aiming at your proverbial wall. He’s playing special teams, which is apart of a lot of players journey to play time.
Just because some of you deemed him a star player without him doing anything on the field doesn’t mean he’s earned that on his team.
I think he’s healthy and wants to play but probably hasn’t gotten enough practice reps to really play wr. Is him playing gunner really any more dangerous than wr?
Because he wants to and is paid money to play? I think there’s value in letting guys who are healthy and want to play play. Maybe it doesn’t impact the game but I’m sure it’s a big morale victory for a guy coming off a tough injury.
I mean he’s not 100% healthy. It takes a bit to get back to game speed after recovering from a torn acl. If people thought he was going to come back and be ready to go in the first game, I got some and news for you
Just look at the data. Last year 30% of knee injuries and 29% of lower body injuries were on kick teams. Only 17% of all plays involved special teams. This is from the NFL’s chief medical officer himself earlier this year.
Not sure that data even exists. Yet. But there’s plenty of data out there showing that Special Teams players have the highest injury rate of any position player, including running back. That’s good enough for me to not have a potential future cornerstone of the franchise on kick coverage.
What the fuck are these awful takes? The Lions are the youngest team, have the hardest schedule, and are improving every week and randos on reddit are flaming him because they, with little to information whatsoever, know better than a professional NFL medical and coaching staff? Based on a pre-game statement and not off of actual gameplay?
Lmfao get fucked bum. Hope your fantasy team is in the shitter. Campbell has been a very good coach the better part of this season and has shown improvement since last year.
Idk. I think it’s good for Jameson to get on the field and run. Also he hasn’t been full contact in almost a year. I’d be better for him to be initiating the hit instead of taking one.
You’re gonna risk his injury by being a special teams player that can be filled by pretty much anyone else rather than a wr. If they want him to run sprints he can just do that in practice, no need to play him at all.
Yeah, gunners are usually RB, WR, or DB. But not 1st round rookies coming off of injury. Jameson Williams isn’t an elite gunner where you’re gaining competitive advantage by having him there. They are just making him “prove” himself which is really dumb.
Sure that’s worth something. But it doesn’t in any way replace being involved in training camp or practice. Being in there running plays is irreplaceable
Behind Jamaal, maybe. He has a very defined role that hasn't been deviated from in like 10+ weeks now. I don't quite understand your comment on rb workloads when one guy has had the same prominent role all year.
Possible they want to get him some run but he just hasn't had enough practice time to get fully in the flow of the offense yet, so since he will have a limited package as a WR this is a way to get him a little more gametime.
I think it’s mind games coaches and GMs have to play with team dynamics and culture. They don’t want to upset players who catch the ball who feel like they’ve earned their role. So instead of giving the Rookie their reps coaches say ‘Go earn it by working and contributing’ and imply or say they’ve earned the opportunity when he’s actually ready.
I think it's absurd to use him as a gunner but I will say that jamo was absolutely ridiculous as a gunner in college. He has multiple highlight tackles just because of his insane speed.
Doesn't seem like that is correct information. [Jamo not covering kicks ](https://twitter.com/kmeinke/status/1599464034918699008?s=20&t=7NkAO6IUz9kBJPtcoErHTA)

)"
I'm a Vikes fan and we lost Lewis Cine to a ST play. Grotesque leg break on I believe his first snap in the NFL. Putting Williams in is a fucking mistake, he shouldn't be tackling anyone in the first place.
What’s mad funny is that I’m pretty sure the lions have not punted once today.. he has one target though. To be expected, look at how Dan Campbell handled Swift. Lions are playing for the future, easing them back in
Because of this? You realize he played gunner at bama, right? He has elite speed. More likely than not he’s going to get there in time to force a fair catch.
Right but I’m saying that because it’s not like the Lions just kinda felt like doing this. He’s good at it. He hasn’t played football in a year and they’re trying to get him up to game speed.
This isn’t kickoff coverage. This is sprinting down the field and forcing a fair catch. It’s also straight line speed so it’s not even like he’ll be making hard cuts. Even if he were he’s 11 months removed from the injury so re-injury risk is about where it will be next year.
He’s not a star. He’s a speciality player and that speciality is speed. He will use that on special teams and on offense running go routes to stretch the defense.
Sprinting full speed for 50+ yards several times per game would absolutely have a significant effect on how fast a player can continue to run late into the game.
To add on: it’s also a high-risk position because you’re running towards impact at top speed.
Typically reserved for the fastest second team players. You don’t usually put your top guys there because of the injury risk.
Fun fact I learned this year after watching football for 30 years. If it's a fake punt, you can do anything short of unnecessary roughness to a gunner if the ball is thrown to them and not get a flag. There's no pass interference on gunners.
Traditionally it's not done by guys that are very high on the WR depth chart
(Like say Matt Slater on the Pat's that gets 1 target a year as their WR6)
Jameson is very very good at gunner because of his speed. He played gunner at Alabama. If he’s running a ton of routes at wr, what difference does it make if he’s playing gunner? ACL’s are usually non-contact injuries. This isn’t a dumb move at all by the coaches.
If he was on ball returns that would be different because that’s the most dangerous thing in football.
[This](https://youtu.be/Cu-GyJjgryM) was the fist play that came to mind. They went on to barely win this game because of his absence. He does hit hard though.
Adam Thielen was undrafted and started as a gunner for us, and was one of the best in the league at it. But when he started producing a little on offense, we took him off ST to protect him. It's just wild to be doing this with a 1st rounder lol. To be fair though, the most likely worst-case scenario is that he gets hurt and misses 6 games. Regardless, I still think it's better to have him get reps at what he's gonna be doing for them for a long time.
He played one year at Alabama. The rest of his college career was as a backup for Olave, Wilson, McLaurin, etc. at OSU.
He didn't have a "Heisman" year: he was never a candidate
The Lions are a team that have created a strong culture, players having the options to play roles that they feel can make a positive impact for the team is import. Jmo is a pro and they trust him
I legit thought they would use him more in the passing game. I had a lot of wiggle room to spare because my opponent had injuries. I totally fucked that one up.
Jameson Williams just burst up the middle on a handoff and ran right by Dan Campbell. On his way back, Campbell stopped the WR to give him a fist bump and pat on the back. Was smiling too, almost like, “Wow, this guy looks good”
Dudes gonna kill it in my forced fair catches league.
1st round potential future WR1's first pro game coming off an ACL tear. Better have him out there on kick coverage.
Can't tear your ACL if you get a concussion!
Not with that attitude!

Por que no los dos?
And he's on a snap count so using his snaps to practice a position he should never be in. This has to be the dumbest coaching decision I've heard in awhile.
He’s played gunner before???
Fr Nick Saban is also a garbage coach because he used him as a gunner too
He was a 1 year rental to Saban
He obviously enjoys it he did it at Bama too
So what? It's an incredibly replaceable position. Just because Bama used him as the 1 year rental he was doesn't mean the lions should.
What level of coaching are you at again?
Fantasy lol
And not even good at it.
Typical reddit. You don't need to be a coach to criticize. If you see a shitty actor win a razzy or a fraud accountant go to jail do you have to be in those professions to criticize? It's dumb. Go off
Ah yes. I'm not a race car driver, so I can't possibly understand that it's important not to aim at the walls.
Except he’s not aiming at your proverbial wall. He’s playing special teams, which is apart of a lot of players journey to play time. Just because some of you deemed him a star player without him doing anything on the field doesn’t mean he’s earned that on his team.
I think he wants to do it
That's when a good coaching staff smacks the sense into him. Mahomes wants to return punts. You think Andy Reid says "why not."
I think he’s healthy and wants to play but probably hasn’t gotten enough practice reps to really play wr. Is him playing gunner really any more dangerous than wr?
Probably equal so why risk it when it doesn't affect the game as much or his future development.
Because he wants to and is paid money to play? I think there’s value in letting guys who are healthy and want to play play. Maybe it doesn’t impact the game but I’m sure it’s a big morale victory for a guy coming off a tough injury.
And it risks injury for that moral victory. Just give him a set of like 5 plays to remember for now like a player who’s been traded at the deadline.
I mean he’s not 100% healthy. It takes a bit to get back to game speed after recovering from a torn acl. If people thought he was going to come back and be ready to go in the first game, I got some and news for you
How much practice do you need to run a go or post route?
If you’re saying you don’t need practice to play wr then idk what to tell you
Not like he’s playing every snap. Do you think you don’t need practice to play special teams?
I think if Mahomes wanted to return punts and asked Andy Reid to try it he’d probably let him do it one time idk Mahomes has a lot of clout over there
Absolutely not, zero chance. Reid probably doesn’t even acknowledge such a stupid question.
So what? Gotta protect him from himself at that point.
Protect him? I doubt playing gunner is anymore dangerous than playing wr. If anything it’s probably safer.
Just look at the data. Last year 30% of knee injuries and 29% of lower body injuries were on kick teams. Only 17% of all plays involved special teams. This is from the NFL’s chief medical officer himself earlier this year.
I’d need to see the data specifically for the position he played to really make a conclusion based off that. There’s alot of variety on special teams.
Not sure that data even exists. Yet. But there’s plenty of data out there showing that Special Teams players have the highest injury rate of any position player, including running back. That’s good enough for me to not have a potential future cornerstone of the franchise on kick coverage.

I agree. For all we know, they may think that it’ll speed up his evolution process, I could see the logic in that.
Lmfao get fucked bum. Hope your fantasy team is in the shitter. Campbell has been a very good coach the better part of this season and has shown improvement since last year.
If he could figure out how to manage a clock, he might get somewhere.
Why bother making 1st round picks, trade em away every year for two 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, and sevenths lol
Tell me what else you know
Idk. I think it’s good for Jameson to get on the field and run. Also he hasn’t been full contact in almost a year. I’d be better for him to be initiating the hit instead of taking one.
Seems like a great guy, and great motivator, but definitely a terrible game manager and doesn't seem real great with the Xs and Os.
In the league for 10 years, went up the coaching ranks for 10 more and 3 of those as an assistant HC to Sean Payton but yet doesn’t know X’s and O’s?
Great take 🤣
I'm confused how exactly this is so dumb, he hasn't played a game in over a year and is a rookie
You’re gonna risk his injury by being a special teams player that can be filled by pretty much anyone else rather than a wr. If they want him to run sprints he can just do that in practice, no need to play him at all.
Doesn’t it have to be a fast player? It’ll be a WR or a corner or a safety
Yeah, gunners are usually RB, WR, or DB. But not 1st round rookies coming off of injury. Jameson Williams isn’t an elite gunner where you’re gaining competitive advantage by having him there. They are just making him “prove” himself which is really dumb.
Jameson actually is an elite gunner if you cared to know what you’re talking about before saying it
Lol the Vikings first rounder snapped his leg on punt coverage this year. No reason to waste talented players for these reasons
(True) Plot twist: This is what he was playing in college when he tore is ACL!
Blow your brown out, not your knee!
He can run down the field and tackle dudes at full speed but he’s on a snap count to play WR?
Not good fam
Maybe because it takes time to learn an offense? And gunning is just gunning?
What has he been doing this whole time
He certainly hasn’t been *in the offense*. Like this guy is a rookie who practiced for the first time 10 days ago are you being serious
For what it’s worth he’s been with the team learning, of course he’s just now getting in snaps at practice but next week he should be good to go
Sure that’s worth something. But it doesn’t in any way replace being involved in training camp or practice. Being in there running plays is irreplaceable
Hey man all we can hope is he drops 15 next week.
Can’t really run routes and get timing down while out with an injury…
Uh.. ok
lol they rolling position dice to assign roles now?
Pretty sure thats how they decide the RB workloads
Behind Jamaal, maybe. He has a very defined role that hasn't been deviated from in like 10+ weeks now. I don't quite understand your comment on rb workloads when one guy has had the same prominent role all year.
Aged like milk lol
Tells me he must be pretty healthy at least?
Possible they want to get him some run but he just hasn't had enough practice time to get fully in the flow of the offense yet, so since he will have a limited package as a WR this is a way to get him a little more gametime.
That's so much less fun. I'm not buying that ;)

This has to be a joke.
I’m fairly certain that Dan Campbell would put _himself_ out there on kick coverage if he was allowed to. So probably not a joke.
Dan the type of coach to put his starters back in for two minutes because they were laughing on the bench during a blowout
Didn’t play on kick coverage at all. Campbell knows what he’s doing, doesn’t care about your fantasy team.
They never punted

... why?
Yeah. You might not want to start him this week.

Nah we just decided to not punt the ball the entire game instead

Man I don’t understand why they didn’t consult you on where they should play him
Even the nfl commentators said it was stupid. There are glaringly obvious reasons not to play him on special teams.
Famously intelligent football minds these commentators.
He’s not a star. He’s a speciality player and that speciality is speed. He will use that on special teams and on offense running go routes to stretch the defense.
You don't use first round picks on special teams players. Those guys can be had for free.
He’s not a special teams guy. He’s a guy who does both. Great speedy WR and a great gunner. He’ll do both
He shouldn't do both. Stamina is a thing. Him sprinting full speed during punts will make him elss effective at WR.
He’s not you, he’s a trained athlete and is capable of running hard for like, 1 extra drive worth of plays
Sprinting full speed for 50+ yards several times per game would absolutely have a significant effect on how fast a player can continue to run late into the game.
Are you kidding? This is nfl
Did he play at all? Seeing no catches.
One target on ESPN. I didn't watch though.
He was on a snap count. He played like 8 or 9 snaps. Had one target but it was incomplete. The ball was thrown behind him.
Noob question: what is a gunner?
They run down the sideline to tackle the kick returner on punts Goal is to get there before the punt does. It's a sprint gig
To add on: it’s also a high-risk position because you’re running towards impact at top speed. Typically reserved for the fastest second team players. You don’t usually put your top guys there because of the injury risk.
Special teams tackler
Fun fact I learned this year after watching football for 30 years. If it's a fake punt, you can do anything short of unnecessary roughness to a gunner if the ball is thrown to them and not get a flag. There's no pass interference on gunners.
In high school we called it Head Hunter. Basically his job is to get to the punt returner as fast as humanly possible
Boomers son
Arsenal fan
Punt coverage player who runs down to stop the returner.
Same question… does it affect fantasy?
Traditionally it's not done by guys that are very high on the WR depth chart (Like say Matt Slater on the Pat's that gets 1 target a year as their WR6)
Fast guy to run down and tackle the returner
Defender on kickoffs and punts
Their job is to run fast and tackle the returner on special teams
This is a MCDC troll
Why
Lions never punted, so Jamo was never in at gunner, MCDC with the 5d chess move
Just think. People are getting paid a lot of money to come up with these kind of asinine decisions
Now that’s how you ease a player back from injury!
I swear the lions management is just vibing. Unbelievably stupid use of a fresh-from-injury first round pick undersized WR.
Yall don't realize he did this at Alabama even during his Heisman year and enjoys doing it
Adam Thielen was undrafted and started as a gunner for us, and was one of the best in the league at it. But when he started producing a little on offense, we took him off ST to protect him. It's just wild to be doing this with a 1st rounder lol. To be fair though, the most likely worst-case scenario is that he gets hurt and misses 6 games. Not the point lol. So y’all don’t realize is just you.
The point is Redditors think they’re smarter than they are.
No that’s not the point either lol.
This is the NFL
The Lions are a team that have created a strong culture, players having the options to play roles that they feel can make a positive impact for the team is import. Jmo is a pro and they trust him
Would you play him or Knight? I'm in a 14 man league so options are thin right now.
Knight
I botched
It happens.
And they want to keep the guy *healthy?* SMH…
I knew I started him today for a reason. Important stuff like this. 👀
Don’t tell Brian Robinson this
Lmao
Lmfao
Odd.
Dan Campbell moment
So dumb
So why did I start him? No joke I droped Browns D this morning picked up this guy and started him
This is why that franchise is a dumpster fire
He hasn't had enough practice running routes and has no chemistry with Goff but he's healthy so they want him to see some type of game action
Lions moment
How does this affect his fantasy output? Still on the bench this week?
Hurts it.
Will crush in point per tackle leagues
Jameson Williams aka “the gunner”
I’ll believe it when I see it
yooo Jamo got the hitsticks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu-GyJjgryM
WTF!
Jay Glazer is a moron who is usually misinformed. But this does sound like Lions-level idiocy, so maybe.
Bama fan checking in. He was a gunner last year at Bama, he fucking loves it. He gets super fired up doing it.
Why?
what a terrible idea. ugh!
Why
Y’all love to overreact he’s only 11 months after ACL at least as gunner it’s relatively straight line running, less cuts, easing him back in.
Bench him now for Wilson or Fournette? PPR
lmao
Can tell this isn’t the dynasty forum haha.. he played Gunner in college and he’s damn good at it.
Congrats to all of you who held on patiently all season with this guy. Hope he shreds for y’all
So none of you in here actually watched him at Bama, huh
He’s gotta bite a kneecap off before he can run routes
Gridddy baby
The funniest thing about this was that I didn’t hear about it til after I started him today!
What could go wrong
Lol no wonder I didn't see him yet.
Lmao
So Chark will be safe to fire up next week in a shootout?
I legit thought they would use him more in the passing game. I had a lot of wiggle room to spare because my opponent had injuries. I totally fucked that one up.
Jameson Williams just burst up the middle on a handoff and ran right by Dan Campbell. On his way back, Campbell stopped the WR to give him a fist bump and pat on the back. Was smiling too, almost like, “Wow, this guy looks good”
miiiiiiiissttttaakkkeeeee
Hahahahaha dude what ???
What the hell are the Detroit Lines thinking?
It’s no wonder this team hasn’t ever figured it out. Decisions like this.
Lions gonna Lion
