It's a small V8 from the malaise era.
Kids nowadays have no idea just how underpowered and slow cars were from the 70s through the 90s when compared to today.
Love a nice bullnose, as far as upgrades it will be expensive but you can honestly do anything. You have a 302 small block Windsor with the horrific early EFI. Truthfully, I’d drive it as is, if you wanted to do something id recommend headers, duel exhaust, shift kit for the c-6, lower the rear end gear ratio (my guess is that it’s already heard 3.55 or higher). Relatively cheap mods that will make the truck breathe better, be a little louder and a little quicker off the line.
By the mid 90s the fuel delivery technology was a lot better to the blocks but they were still mostly underwhelming, for your year of truck if you want to increase power you will at least want to start with gt40 heads, comp cam, duel exhaust, header conversion. You can get those going but they are still going to be pretty slow in todays standards.
Remove the bed, the doors, the spare tire, then motor swap. These trucks were never meant to go fast. To do so would mean dropping serious weight, adding a LOT of power, and switching out the running gear for wheels/tires more conducive to speed. Sorry.
Blower, turbo, cam, headers, maf, tune, any and/ or all of that. Gears would probably be the cheapest for "feels" faster, you'll get shitter mileage but clearly that's not a problem.
It's not made to go fast ....sorry
That’s lame

What’s wrong with early EFI?
Like any new auto technology during the mailaise era, it wasn’t that efficient and the electronics were prone to issues
I have a 1996 5.0L V8. Any hope for it or is the fuel injection similarly unimpressive.

That sounds like too much work. Once a beater always a beater.
Is your half ton a manual or an automatic?
Automatic 2wd.
Minimum ~$5000 - $8000 to make that thing loud and sorta fast-ish
6 speed auto or free-fall.
Coyote swap it.
Remove seat covers. Put them in Mustang. Enjoy the quick.

I went thru 20k and thre shops before mine got even close...
Put a 460 in it!
How much would that cost?
Buy a used one
Several thousand
