But I have a friend who converted to Islam many years ago (she reached out to me after years of silence a while back which is why I'm reading on here, gathering arguments for when she inevitably wants to talk religion) and it was super heartbreaking how quickly that "most pro-women religion" brainwashing worked with her. It was within weeks of making friends with a very religious woman in University that she stopped dressing like her usual punky self, stopped being as jokey, didn't want to go to clubs anymore. Instead there suddenly were talks about her considering converting, how amazing it would be to center your day around talking with god (she wasn't religious at all before), and how valued women were in the religion. When I brought up what little I knew at the time concerning the oppression of women in Islam, she had the arguments ready and rehearsed why that was not oppression but a good thing really and she absolutely sounded like she had undergone brainwashing and lost all ability to think critically, it was scary to witness. A couple months further along, she had converted, had taken to veiling herself and wearing only wide dresses, telling us old friends to our faces it was because she didn't want to look like a slut anymore and how much more valued she now felt. Yes of course, because her new friend, the friends family and group of friends with whom she now spent most of her time probably praised her a lot for converting and having seen the light I imagine. From there on out, no meetup was possible without her bringing up religion and her trying to convert us others, too, which is why we lost touch after a while. Sorry for dumping this story on you, but your comment brought back to mind how quickly my friend fell for this same "pro women religion" brainwashing and that even well before cute instagram infographics filled with lies. I do regret that back then I didn't even know about the sex slaves and child brides and made-widow-then-married-by-prophet stories and wasn't able to bring any of that up to her.
