Switzerland beat France on penalties
By - SweeneyisMad
Well done Switzerland. ^((now you can buy the rafales))
Weird way to spell Eurofighter
Well done eurofighters?
Yes, and you can join us in the eurolosers club, now. :(
I can't even describe what's happening in Italy right now, it's like we won the championship 😂
lol any particular reason for the Schadenfreude of Italians?
Simply, we just have an intense rivalry lol. Them losing whatever thing it's a national holiday for us.
I don't have anything personal against French people though, for me it's tradition almost 😂
Also, I just noticed you have the France flair: don't you do the same with us? 🤔
Tbh this always seemed a bit odd: both here and reading around the press there is talk about some sort of supposed great rivalry between Italy and France, especially in sports events.
But I don't really think they care.
I mean in sports we just need 1 bad match against you and you'll be the rival of the decade. You used to be the one after 2006.
Otherwise yes, you are not seen as a rival but as that country very similar to us that we acknowledge in food (which is rare).
I understand, that's cool
2006 still hurts but we don't really consider you a rival tbh.
Right now, Belgium would probably be the one, given that they're still salty about the 2018 game.
I agree, the match I was the most septical was us against Belgium, or against England. I was confident about a match with Italy or Germany. Hopefully, now we lost I have no mix feelings anymore. Things are done.
I saw this in this thread especially. It feels weird 😂
All the Western European countries have the impression of having a rivalry with France :)
Doesn't work with Germany, Netherlands, Ireland and others Norther countries except England. I wrote England because including Wales and Scotland would be wrong.
"ALL the western Europeans countries" was probably over exaggerated haha
The relation between Germany and France was definitely not the best in 19e century and first half of 20e century.
I think there is still some kind of healthy and good "rivalry" in European Union between them and us
I see. Now I'd want to ask around to see what's the deal with this lol
But your rivalry is mutual at least with the UK right?
Even with respect to the UK, France doesn't seem to care much and the rivalry looks very much one sided. [The news coverage](https://imgur.com/a/XUkT0WW) from the recent Jersey fishing dispute is a pretty good example of this. I'm often in France (partner's family), and UK is barely ever brought up in conversations, even with Brexit.
So I guess French people don't care much about this stuff 🤔
I'm learning a lot in this thread
I think they're just too busy fighting one another...
Maybe it's because France is Italy's only big neighbour. On the other hand France is surrounded by Germany, the UK Italy and Spain so that's a lot of potential rivals.
It could be!
And that's why we need the Habsburgs back. A new rival to Italy!
Ah I see
>Also, I just noticed you have the France flair: don't you do the same with us? 🤔
Not really, we love you guys. Our rivalry is mostly with the UK
I knew about the UK one, of course, but I thought the rivalry between us was mutual. This feels weird 🤔
well tbh france and italy have not met for quite some time in a major tornament now i think, so the rivalry kinda got away with the time
Just bring up 2006 WC that will bring back memories lol
Zidane. Materazzi. le coup de tête. This will definitely trigger most French sports fans...
[Coup de boule à droite, coup de boule à gauche](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7sx2wRJPEo)
Italy: You took everything from me
France: I don't even know who you are!
Lmao this exactly
I can assure you that the rivalry started during france 98 and it's limited to football. For example we love Gasly like one of our own. We call french people "our cousins beyond the alps".
I can assume you that we don't care much about about "racist" portraing of us italians.
For example in "Family Guy" they do that A LOT and they are hilarious.
So was "the racist commercial against Italians" but some of you simply refuse to understand that it seems
Nah it's very much one sided. People are eiither indifferent or like Italy here. Kinda the same thing with the UK "rivalry"
I admit the UK one surprises me especially 😅
There are more jokes about them than about Italy but they still care way more avout us than we care about them. I think it's due to the fact that France neighbors all great western european powers and had beef with all them and thus we don't really have a set rival.
So, for what I learnt in this thread, you guys don't really care 😅
It might depend which region he's from. Somebody from the South of France, might feel differently.
I hav friends who support France's team. They're also against any of the rivals and big teams.
I'm from the southeast of France (Nice) and nope, zero rivalry.
I was kinda shocked when I learned Italians hate us so much. There's zero sentiment like that here.
I wouldn’t say “hate” is the right word.
I have read so really heinous shit about France by italians in here. It's staggering sometimes, not saying all italians hate us of course, but there are some that really do.
Sadly, you're right. As much as I joked around about the French team losing, I could never dream of hating you for real. But other Italians have quite a different opinion on this
But we really don't.
It's just a sport/sibilings rivalry. There is no real hate againt french people in italy. We call you "I nostri cugini d'oltralpe" that means "our cousins beyond the Alps".
I think when it comes to football there’s a lot of animosity from italians toward france. It stops at football tho.
well. french people say really bad shit towards italians too.
Travelling in Italy as a French and I would say the opposite : they have a wrong overated image of France. Many Italians, espacially the old one, would say that in France there is no mafia, people are judged on their skills and not their network, plus Italy would be better if Italians copied the French, etc... Italians look France the way the French look to Germany.
I never thought it was possible to friendzone someone in this way
Italy, blushing: "France, i feel... I think... that I hate you"
France, surprised: "Sorry, I thought we were just friends, I don't really hate you"
Now this is the kind of Tsundere Hetalia i'd watch :)
So Italy thinks it has a rivalry with France, while France thinks it has a rivalry with the UK, while the UK thinks it has a rivalry with Germany?
Hum , looking at most brits on this sub, it seems like the UK has a stronger rivalry towards France than France towards the UK.
Haha, I'm sure rivalries can be kind of flexible. I'm mostly going off the whole "2 World Wars, 1 World Cup" thing England keeps going on about.
It's more like the UK think it has a rivalry with France.
Not at all. We have a strong rivality with Belgium and slightely less with england, but Italy, nothing
Italy: You took everything from me!
France: I don’t even know who you are
Lol, kinda reminds me of this scene from [Mad Men](https://youtu.be/K4Ksoizbl2s?t=38)
But, yeah TIL we have a rivalry with Italy 👀
As a third country person Italian and French mindsets and ways of life can look very similar to each other. Of course they are not the same, and there are very different things: French are way more intellectual, talk deep intellectual stuff, while Italian entertainment and aesthetics are more dramatic (watch an Italian followed by French film, the Italian one has more plot twists), but coming from an English-speaking world or East Asian world, after encountering French culture makes Italian less "alien".
>I didn't scream for Italy - Austria, but I'm doing it now.
My dad, after the match was tied.
I think that every italian developed a strong football rivalry after France 98.
I hear this a lot, yesterday's match was very felt here
Nah we don't really care about you guys, not in the sense that we don't like you but we just don't think about you.
France doesn't exactly know how to sell itself to Italy, not to mention the instances where you guys act superb.
I’m in Geneva (so we share the border with France right next to my neighborhood) people are crazily happy, honking and screaming
Awesome ahah. I live in a small town so nothing is happening here
Haha that may be THE day where people stay awake later (except for like New Years Eve) lol
Un saluto da Swizzera :)
Same from Italy!
Hahaha same in Belgium. Celebrated like against Portugal.
I see! Didn't know you had a similar rivalry with France as well
Belgium rivaling France comes from the last WC and the fact some French analysts went on French national TV saying talking about a tweet of one of our players saying Belgium is really strong right now. Claiming we would be eating French fries really fast (we would be out really fast)
And here we are :)
Ah, wish I'd remember this. Good for you then~
It seems like its would be harder to find a country that doesn’t have a rivalry with France haha
It's mostly Wallonia but thanks to the last WC all of Belgium has created a full on hatred for the French NT.
Plus, their press is really annoying when it comes to football.
This so much. You don't imagine how obnoxious former French football players are when they talk shite about Italy in these weeks, because we played against teams like Switzerland. The other one is England, Lineker especially; and the last one is Germany (although Germans try to be more likable, but always with middling results).
I guess Italy is the one most likely to win now. In bocca al lupo!
Madonna la gufata
mmh, Belgium is really strong and more experience than us. I wouldn't bet on us just yet
But their team is older than yours and Italy hasn't been beaten since like 30 games.
exactly, Italy's winning streak is the longest ever in its history, so in terms of probabilities a team able to end that streak is likelier and likelier.
That's not how probability works. If you throw a fair dice 30 times and it shows "6" each time, then for the 31st time the probability for "6" is still 1/6.
It's rather the opposite: If you want to determine whether a dice is rigged (or if Italy is a good team), you throw it (let the team play) 30 times and observe how often "6" shows up (Italy wins).
Of course there could be indirect mechanisms, like Italy becoming too secure about their performance, leading to mistakes or maybe they have already spent too much energy on the other games, but in general, having a winning streak should be a good sign.
Today was an insane day of football. Congrats Switzerland, NOBODY saw this coming.
Switzerland to defeat every country whose language they speak
Where do I sign ?
I don't think they speak Spanish. So ...
Many do, there's a huge spanish community in Switzerland, especially after the 50s-60s. Every time I go to Genève or north of it I can speak Spanish in some shops and public offices.
Do the red devils speak Dutch, French or both? The Swiss (generally) don't speak Dutch, so that might be your best bet.
I have always thought that Swiss German sounds a bit like Dutch.
Swiss here. I did listen to a video of someone talking in Dutch once (and just rechecked) and it did actually sound like Swiss German. However, it's only the *sounds*. While there were a few words that exist in german too, I couldn't actually understand what was being said beyond those.
They lost against Italy
Easy group. Cit.
IIRC the original quote was in French, right? /s
Go away 😁
They already failed that in the second match they played, and that's just because they don't speak Welsh.
That was some intense football! Great game and a great disappointment for a certain Kylian Mbappe.
That shot is going to haunt him all his life.
Probably, given that almost all the other penalties were perfect.
People forget he's just 22. He has time to prove himself for the next 10 years and that means 2 World cups and another 2 Euros.
And he already has one world cup to his name.
Was sitting in a downstairs bar tonight where the match was on and out of about 6 tables occupied 3 of them were full of French students. That atmosphere was insane, such an intense match but really great TV
Oh that is gonna go down poorly
today every italian felt like a swiss
Why is that?
Strong FRA ITA rivalry.
Strong rivalry that really only goes one way lol
Same with Scotland/England, or England/Germany. Always strikes me as funny when one country is obsessed with beating the other, and the feeling is not reciprocated.
As always with Italy..on every subjects concerning France
They are always so happy when they do better than us, that's weird
I don't think it is that strange, Italy and France are similar and close(geographically). Think of it as "the grass is always greener on the other side".
The thing is, they always want greener grass than France, when we actually don't care
Yeah, for what it's worth it always seemed odd to me - there isn't a rivalry, just an unhealthy amount of one-sided schadenfreude.
Yeah i can understand that because usually the ones with the "greener grass" are you guys. But now think at Germany or UK, *usually* France is behind Germany on various matters. (sorry maybe I'm being too generic)
I get that, but sometimes I feel like Italians just want France to be worst, more than anything .. it's an unhealthy "duel"
I think you are the only ones we secretely envy a bit. You had the balls to chop of your kings' heads
Where in France do you live though? I've been told by Italians that it's mostly a rivalry between northern Italy and southern France. Something about a lot of Italians moving to southern France, and not being very welcome there.
That was during the 1950's no one care about italian immigrants anymore, there really isn't that much of a rivalry this side of the alps.
In r/soccer it seems to be mutual. Also, Vieira and Barthez were not really nice with us in these days.
France is our second best frenemy in football
Every Belgian too.
Congrats Switzerland. Great game.
France was awesome as well.
Switzerland managed to do what we couldn't. Well done.
I can't defeat you, but I know he can
They really deserved this win. Great game overall.
I have to say we had a good match, and you played very well (if it wasn't for VAR you would have won)
God damn fuck shit ass
Typical Greek god.
I lost 10 euros :(
Why would you bet on France? Imagine how much money you would have made betting on the obvious winner ;)
That being not Germany?
should've done what this guy did https://imgur.com/DloNGEa
You would've made more betting on over goals
Bien joué, la Suisse ! Un sacré match !
What a mad game!
And all of Europe rejoiced.
why though? I think only Italy, Belgium and ENG have rivalry with the equipe?
Nobody likes the favorit.
Then people would be mostly against Italy, but they aren't.
Yeah, people just dislike France in general.
A lot of people tend to be against the previous winner
Euro 2016 winner was Portugal, fyi. France is the current World Champion.
[I will just leave this here] (https://i.imgur.com/iiCUnDW.mp4)
What a bonkers day today, both games were exceptionally thrilling, especially this one.
Now Kick out Spain
What a great day
Goddamnit. Hate spoilers.
Welcome to the internet, my friend! XD

Phew. Buying the next Swiss man I see a pint.
Ah the US, always judging by the color of the skin.
They're French born in France and playing for France. What more do you want?
With the way r/france, french politicians, and french social activists go on about how this french team is much more progressive than the other french teams, it seems americans aren't the only ones...
> Why do other 'french' not play, and only that specific type of 'french' hmm? ;)
Because they're better and they're french.
So you aren't aware that France had a colonial empire in Africa and wanted to keep influence and close ties there even after the states gained independence? Or that France still owns territories in Caribbean/South America that are part of the EU and majority black as they are considered by France as core parts of the country?
When Albanians and Serbians work together they can beat world champions, luckily for the rest of the world this rarely happens.
I don't think any Serbian is involved with the Swiss NT? They're all Bosnians and Croatians AFAIK
I don't know why, but Spain is likely to win the tournament.
mmh, almost losing with Croatia doesn't exactly inspire confidence
I can see that you don't know, lol.

We won in 1945.
