[Keith Smith](https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1437882695774785539) As u/BroncoSquatch rightly predicted, >Aaron Gordon's contract extension with the Denver Nuggets is closer to $87-88M in base salary and $4-5M in bonuses, league sources tell @sportrac.

IdRatherBeLurking

[Blackburn](https://twitter.com/NBABlackburn/status/1437869555628625928) >There are maybe 10 players in the NBA capable of defending LeBron James and Luka Doncic the way Aaron Gordon can. He’s 25 years old. He was adjusting to a new team last year during a pandemic. >This was always the right call for Denver. Double down on your championship formula.

landlion35

The League is screwed now. The dynasty has begun

A_Perfect_Scene

Get ready for the armchair GMs to tell us all how much of an overpay it is

IdRatherBeLurking

Please tell me how bad you feel for Kroenke's wallet rn

n3sta

I think we should start a go fund me to help Stan recover from this

tickeram

As an Arsenal Sympathizer : Fuck Stan and Josh Kroenke

Josh__Kroenke

Bet you wouldn't say that to my face, you peasant.

IdRatherBeLurking

Sucks for y'all, no doubt, but we've got it pretty good here in Denver.

aatencio91

NGL, Stan not begging Inglewood for the money to build SoFi went a long way in positively altering my opinion of him as an owner And since Josh "took over," things have been looking up at the Can.

broncos1000

He was trying to make St. Louis pay tho and thats how he got his way to move the team to LA

aatencio91

The city was violating the terms of the lease in the late St Louis years. Stan didn't really do anything to hold the city hostage, the city just didn't hold up their end of a bargain agreed upon by the city and the previous owner.

BucketOfTruthiness

The case between the city and the kroenke's is still on going and isn't up for trial until January. [Just today a judge denied a move to dismiss the lawsuit.](https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/st-louis-judge-denies-nfl-rams-and-kroenkes-move-to-dismiss-relocation-lawsuit/article_1a75645c-3d13-55ba-828b-1ab770805a3c.html)

Poverty_Shoes

Fuck Stan, Josh is the shit. Josh is a big part of the reason the Nuggets are competitive despite their owner collecting franchises like they’re Pokémon and treating all of them as investments only (the LA Rams he might kinda care about).

U-N-C-L-E

Josh has nothing to do with Arsenal...

tron7

There are consequences to signing bad contracts that are way beyond the owners wallet. If it goes south and the contract is too big, it's a lot harder to move and you have to give assets to get off of it and you lose flexibility to improve the team.

TheyMadeMeLogin

That may be true for an under the cap team, but the Nuggets can't replace his salary if he walks. They had to do this and +- $5m isn't really a big deal in that respect.

tron7

It's true for all teams and it's true that the Nuggets didn't have much in the way of options. Gordon had them over the barrel and they can either bid for him now or next summer. I'm not saying they shouldn't have, just that bad contracts have more consequences than just the owners bill

Pure-Temporary

But this isn't that drastic of an overpay. Grant got 20 million last season after proving absolutely nothing previously. And Gordon is arguably better (I think he is). Gordon was better than Grant in rebounds, assists, steals, turnovers, fouls, EFG%, and is in the same neighborhood in most cumulative advanced stats despite a usage rate 30% lower. I truly believe if you have Gordon the same usage, he has a similar year to grant. And rumor has it contending teams are inquiring about Grant already. In 2 years when the cap is going up and up, this will look absolutely fine

SnooPets752

and Gordon is a way better defender than Grant, especially against physical wings like Lebron / Kwahi / PG. He stacks up better against bigger PFs too. Grant has proven (to many ppl's surprise) that he can do more on offense than catch-and-shoot 3's, but we don't need another shot creator. With MPJ's elite shooting and Jokic's elite passing, Gordon's above-the-rim game is arguably a better fit and harder to replicate than Grant's offense.

tron7

I'm fine with the contract, the player option is worse than the money. I just don't agree that the Kroenkes are the only thing to consider.

IdRatherBeLurking

No, you must find three other ways to make that point! lol I appreciate your perspective and agree.

Pure-Temporary

Yeah, I agree there. For the player option they could've shaved a few million off, since player option almost always means opting out

tron7

Unless the contract is a pariah, then it means opting in.

TwoWayMarko

can you please explain why the player option is a bad thing ?

tron7

It’s all downside for the team. If the player outplays his deal he opts out early to get a bigger contract. If he plays poorly he opts in. The decision is never what a fan of the team would want.

TwoWayMarko

got it, thx .

SnooPets752

if you overpay next 4 years to have a legit shot at a championship each of those years, you do it 100 times out of a 100

IdRatherBeLurking

Surely that's what every "overpay derrr" commenter is thinking

tron7

I don't know, that's just my comment. I mean, do you think people actually care about Kroenke's wallet?

IdRatherBeLurking

Yes, yes I do lol

tron7

I disagree. I think I've seen you talk about his wallet more than any other fan

IdRatherBeLurking

Once on twitter and once here, nice man. What's Your problem?

tron7

I meant for other subjects as well; practice facilities, Altitude/Comcast etc. There's no problem, I just don't think people are considering Kroenke's finances as much as you are.

TwoWayMarko

i dont know much about the financial side of the nba but i think people are concerned that if kroenke decides he doesnt want to pay luxury tax and repeater and whatnot that guys will be traded .... i personaly would hate to loose jamal or mpj in a year or two. I dont think anybody cares about stans money , for some reason he has a reputation of beeing a cheap owner, in the 6 years or so where im a nuggets fan i have not seen anything that would let me believe this is true ...its probably all because of the loud arsenal fans who cry about him all the time idk. TC said he has no financial restrictions, there are no reasons to be concerned i hope he goes all in and spends a lot more .

landlion35

According to my calculations, it is a $36 overpay

tron7

I still have that $11

tron7

The money seems right, the player option hurts.

donaldrump12

Resident arm chair quarter back here who hopes Aaron Gordon's playoff performance last year is not what happens this year now that Gordon is a 25M a year player. Time will tell.

A_Perfect_Scene

He's literally never getting paid 25mil in any year on his contract

donaldrump12

O ok. I think the point still stands. 22M - 24M (88 guaranteed). If we want to nitpick. Is it fair to say he is making 22M a year? With big salaries comes big expectations. Nonetheless, his playoff performance this year was atrocious. We can debate all the reasons why to excuse it, but, he needs to be better, imo. He is reaching the age where players enter peak/prime. Hopefully he can shoulder the load for half a year while Jamal gets back.

A_Perfect_Scene

His playoff performance was one of the major reasons why we made it out of the first round. We don't get past Portland without him taking on the Dame assignment

Mountain_Wood

Love it, they made a commitment to winning in this window. Murray take your time bruh because once you come back it’s championship or bust. LFG!

IdRatherBeLurking

[Moore](https://twitter.com/HPbasketball/status/1437869950241107970) >If Gordon had walked, the Nuggets wouldn’t have had the cap space to replace him, and that’s before their struggles in getting marquee free agents to join. [More Moore](https://twitter.com/HPbasketball/status/1437872040338341889) >This is maybe the best way I can put the Gordon extension: >$24 million per year for Aaron Gordon for most teams: massive overapy >$24 million per year for the already cap-strapped Nuggets: slight overpay >Not keeping Aaron Gordon in free agency: Disaster.

dnelson7

This is an overpay for most teams. But considering we need someone to guard the Lebrons and Kawhis this is necessary for Denver

UnderratedNightmare

This is huge imo. More ppl who say “overpay” should see this.

Pure-Temporary

Also... his contract doesn't rise with the cap like a max does. So as the cap rises, he'll eat less of it as a percentage. In 2 years when worse players get 25-30, this will look absolutely fine

Smmoove

> his contract doesn't rise with the cap like a max does No contracts do this actually, max contracts just start at the amount of the percentage of the first year, but if the cap doubles or something it won't affect the contract.

Pure-Temporary

Yeah you're right, but they have the, what is it, 8% escalator thing? So not rising with the cap but almost guaranteed to take up a higher percentage each successive year than a normal contract

Smmoove

8% raises are a product of being extended/re-signed via the Bird exception, which I imagine is also the case with AG as Denver is over the cap. So in theory AG would have 8% raises, but contracts can vary a lot for non-max guys. The total contract value would be the same though, just how it's distributed year by year.

Pure-Temporary

Oh I thought it was just on max contracts, not any bird rights contract.

720everyday

Younger than a typical player with his NBA experience also. Getting his prime years for this and we haven't really seen him with an established chemistry with our core yet. I think it's a bit of a deal by the end of it but who knows...

Pure-Temporary

I'm in slight overpay thinking, but yeah. He's never had good coaching, elite point guard play, or anything resembling a winning culture. That stuff matters

33birdboy

His prime may have been with orlando...His game is completely reliant on his athleticism.. Most players like that peak at like 23

connorado_the_Mighty

I'm just going to spam this all over r/nba. This is spot on.

DyslexicAmI

Does this mean we go into the luxury? The Kroenke’s are actually spending money????

IdRatherBeLurking

ItsHappening.gif

blewrb

They spent into the luxury tax the last time we had a contending team. It'd be stupid to just spend into the tax all the time regardless of what the team is doing. Unfortunately their willingness to spend on other things lacks. But this happens to be one way they appear to be okay spending money.

Piano_Fingerbanger

Rams might be making them a profit with that shiny new stadium!

SnooPets752

now they gotta spend extra to make sure our stars don't get injured. e.g. a team physician who can set hard cap on minutes for the players that neither they nor moach can override.

trentyz

There was an interview or quote I saw saying that he would pay up!! It’s awesome!

SwizzyDangles

Suns fan here, I think it’s a very small overpay but a necessary one and it’s not like AG is a scrub. He is a legitimate starter who can defend and if he ever finds a consistent jumper can be dangerous. Still pretty young too, only 25. You’ll get most of his years of athleticism and by the time the next one comes can assess if he’s still a good athlete or not. He is a solid player on a playoff, potential Finals level team. Don’t get the overreaction

blewrb

Yep. Mirrors about what Matt Moore said, quoted in this thread near the top if you sort by "best." Small overpay for us, but he's good and a necessary part of our attempt to be a contender, plus we wouldn't be able to replace him because of cap situation. So slight overpay for the nuggets, would be a larger overpay for another team, but disaster if we didn't re-sign him.

flurray

People bitch and moan and whine and piss all over themselves while having a conniption fit over Murray's contract, and he goes out and shows that is definitely worth it with an amazing bubble performance and then keeping up his level of play last season (after a slow start due to injuries/fatigue). Can't wait to see what Gordon is going to show this year: Not coming to a team mid season Not recovering from an ankle injury Being an undeniable part of a core on a championship contender that clearly believes in him Literally must be a dream come true for him after all those years suffering in Orlando, Florida. I would expect him to play the best basketball of his career and it is going to be a blast to watch. Also love that KSE seems to definitely be all in now on making the most of Jokic's time here by going into the tax (unless they are just going to let MPJ walk which I highly doubt).

UnderratedNightmare

Fuck yeah! Give a damn what “overpay” fuckers say! This team is being built to compete for a championship around an MVP! When you want rings and you want win now, you gotta pay up. Nice to see it happening for us! Our starting 5 when Murray gets back is a top 5 in league. Fucking @ me!

BlindManBaldwin

Commissioner Gordon The Penguin Joker Let's fuck up Gotham City

WeirdRedBeard

It's The Guin

BlindManBaldwin

But the pen is mightier than the sword

WeirdRedBeard

Hehe you said penis

aatencio91

heheh > pen is

IdRatherBeLurking

Who is MPJ and Thrill??? I need to know this to make the piece, B.

BlindManBaldwin

I had a joke that Barton is like Harley Quinn cause he loves the Joker, but I'm not super firm in that. Flexible. Perhaps Mister Freeze cause his game is so cool. MPJ, off the top of my head — Riddler. Curious Mike and all that. Gotta do research.

wo_lo_lo

I would peg Monte as Harley Quinn. Just look at how he looks at Joker.

BlindManBaldwin

> I would peg Monte Wouldn't we all?

IdRatherBeLurking

>MPJ, off the top of my head — Riddler. !!!!!

triggerfingatim

Don’t you mean ??????

DirkolaJokictzki

Barton is undoubtedly two face. MPJ is the mad hatter.

StraightUpKigga

I actually really like Mister Freeze, but also because that made me think of Frozone in the Incredibles.

P0intcenter

Maybe two face for Barton? Yo be honest I would go with Red Hood for him, or Talon, but I'm not sure if they are known well enough. Also, the Riddler that someone suggested is great for MPJ, I had Azrael but he isn't well known

IdRatherBeLurking

I might have to go with two-face since I can't seem to find any good Freeze art lol And I could look at it as how the fanbase sees him, not that he's two-faced.

couponuser2

One face is Will, the other is Thrill. Bam! Now it's a positive MPJ is Deadshot

IdRatherBeLurking

Sheeeeit

couponuser2

Ninja edited my MPJ recommendation also. Or you could even go DeathSTROKE

IdRatherBeLurking

Deadshot would be dope too, I'll probably try both and see what works. I'll send you what I've got so far

couponuser2

Making me feel special :) I'd love to see it. Throw it on a shirt I'll buy it. Even if it needs to happen under the table since it might be doubly-duty from DC and the NBA. BTW, the white man can't jump shirt is my all-time favorite. People love it when I wear it around.

IdRatherBeLurking

That's awesome to hear thank you! The hard part will be getting them all together and looking like a single piece.

P0intcenter

If you are only doing starters, scarecrow also fits.

IdRatherBeLurking

Good one!

jonnyb8717

Curious Mike, unlocking the Riddles of existence The Riddler confirmed

A_Perfect_Scene

Deadshot for MPJ

TheBatman0816

Did someone call me?

attentionyou

Yeehaw! Well that’s about what we expected, right?

IdRatherBeLurking

Pretty much. 20M-25M

UnderratedNightmare

So now we got AG in the books. They can focus on that max extension for MPJ!

Pure-Temporary

God DAMN r/nba is flipping its shit about an overpay and my ban means I can't point out the obvious to any of them: Jerami grant left for 20 million. We matched, but it wasn't enough. If we couldn't keep Grant at 20 million, why would we be keeping Gordon at 20 million? Especially with the cap going up and this contract not being tied to the cap through escalators... It's so simple and not one person there has mentioned it. We lost a similar player for 20 mil, so upped it to 23mil to keep a better fit. Jesus christ

SnooPets752

Gordon is better fit than Grant too\~

TheOrthodoxPolock

u/KillerPussy2 get in here and celebrate!!

[deleted]

TheOrthodoxPolock

🥂🥂 here’s to having you around for awhile longer. 20-25 mill for KP2 and AG is an absolute steal.

oloshh

Only thing left to do is to max out MPJ and I can sleep peacefully

snorkles01

This is great! Now just lockdown MPJ and we're set. My gut says Nuggets wanted to get this deal done before MPJ so they would have a solid idea of how much cap room is available. Edit: Also I see a lot of people on Twitter and NBA subreddit saying this is a big overpay. In a vacuum it probably is but people are ignoring the fact that Gordon was a worse fit for our team last year than he should be going forward. With Murray out and MPJ struggling off and on Gordon was 2nd/3rd option often on offense which is not ideal. Once everyone is healthy next season he goes back to being 4th option and the team's best defender.

dnelson7

PUSH ALL THE CHIPS TO THE CENTER AND SIGN MPJ. WE ARE A SMALL MARKET TEAM THIS IS OUR SHOT WE NEED TO TAKE IT

Five0AG

Thanks yall

Anti-vaxKD

I love this

mamaljurray

LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO CORE 4 LOCKED UP BABY Edit: mpj better sign that extension

Colodavis

Didn't we pay Harris 4/$84 at 21 annually? So 4/$92 at 23 annually seems fine for Gordan.

Glittering_Log_3340

He’s 25?

Colodavis

Isn't it better to get him in his prime for 3 years, maybe 4 if he stays under contract? He has all the experience and should peak now with this team.

BroncoSquatch

The size of this W is absolutely massive

BoneyardBill

NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO HYPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG W!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

martinap

Expected high 80s and 4 years so this isn’t far off. Hopefully he plays better than he did last season, but I’m OK with this contract. Confused at the PO though

Olovnivojnik

*Aaron Gordon's contract extension with the Denver Nuggets is closer to $87-88M in base salary and $4-5M in bonuses, league sources tell* u/sportrac*.* Looks like it's high 80s.

greatwall0101

Once MPJ is re-signed, the championship window is wiiiidddeeee open

Melokic

I thought the max we could extend him was 88M/4y

IdRatherBeLurking

Prolly incentives

dammit_bobby420

What does this mean for the MPJ extension? Does this effect that at all?

aatencio91

The only way it affects the MPJ extension is that now the FO doesn't have two extensions to focus on

dammit_bobby420

That new kicks ass

SirJoris

Nope

ChipmunkOutside443

It wont affect it at all no.

Maculate

So stoked we re-signed him. LFG

volkof

This is fucking tight

petarisawesomeo

It is the end my work day and my brain is fried, so my initial reaction was mind-blowing that we resigned MPJ for so little...still very excited that AG is sticking around. It may be on the high-end, but still reasonable.

ChiefKeefIsGoat

Im happy

aatencio91

YOOO LET'S FUCKIN GO Core 4 baby

ephen_stephens

Barton makes it a live 5 imho. Either way. LFG!!!!

n3sta

Good shit AG

oldmoneyblues

The Nuggets are assembling Voltron!

KeananTotcha

Fantastic. Need to just extend MPJ and we should be set for years.

vladasr

Great news, but what about Norm? I didn't even know he was ill.

IdRatherBeLurking

Apparently he didn't tell anyone but his closest friend. Even his family didn't know.

SlinginCheeseburgers

I was lucky enough to see him perform live a few years ago, and it was by far the best comedy show I've ever been to. I was sore from laughing for a week.

Slightly more than I was thinking/hoping, but overall LET'S GOOOOOO

tron7

This is on the high end of our guesses from May >[How much money would you guess Aaron Gordon makes on his next deal?](https://www.reddit.com/r/denvernuggets/comments/n9xna1/game_day_thread_nuggets_4424_hornets_3335_may_11/gxrzm5j/)

IdRatherBeLurking

Or exactly as much as the vast majority of replies thought it'd be?

tron7

You're right, I didn't see a couple of those were three years

NikolaiBullcry

Welp, we’re rolling with it. Definitely better than Garry Harris but contract could be an overpay. Pray he stays healthy and continues to progress on offense and be a stout defender in big moments.

jonnyb8717

Yaaaaas!! Core 4 baby

NoInfluence450

Don't mind it. We were paying Millsap 30 million for 3 years and Gordon could possibly be better for the Nuggets next year than Millsap was.

so_af

People won’t be calling this an overpay this time next year. Fuck ‘em, let’s get that ship

SnooPets752

about what I was expecting\~ great job FO!

airgibbo

I mean, without context it seems like a not so great deal, maybe 4/76$ was more fair. But in our situation losing him would have been a disaster so it's definitely a good move for Denver. Keeping the core of Jokic, Murray, AG, MPJ and Morris is the most important thing and once we extend MPJ we are set for years of contending

Stormeve

Worth it. For a team in Denver’s situation, this is a good deal. We were going to pay Grant a similar amount who was a worse fit. He slots in our team’s needs and culture better.

Pure-Temporary

I can't wait to argue with all the people claiming grant is clearly better

WeirdRedBeard

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's the Millsap conundrum all over again, except we are aware of the injury risks this time. A considerable overpay, but makes sense at this time. I imagine we will all like this contract a lot less as time goes on, but best case scenario is fun to ponder right now.

BroncoSquatch

I think this contract will age fine, barring catastrophic injury

Pure-Temporary

Which is true of nearly every contract

BroncoSquatch

Some I think will age poorly for non-injury reasons. Rudy Gobert’s deal due to declining athleticism in his 30s. DeRozans deal because he’s not as good as Patrick Williams will be. I wasn’t a fan of Tobias’ deal or Gallo’s current deal. Etc, etc

MALSTROEM_

> DeRozans deal because he’s not as good as Patrick Williams will be. Lol wut

BroncoSquatch

Like by the middle of the deal, I’m saying

MALSTROEM_

You must have an incredibly optimistic outlook on Patrick Williams then. Especially considering how good DeRozan is aging judging by his recent years in San Antonio.

BroncoSquatch

Yeah, I’m pretty high on Pat Will. We will see if it ends up being warranted

MALSTROEM_

Did you see the r/nba post a couple of days ago about how Kawhi ruined the NBA draft?

BroncoSquatch

Nah, what was that about?

Pure-Temporary

Is it that considerable of an over pay in a league where we just lost a comparable player for 20 million a year?

TheeGreenHawk99

WE PAID HIM WHAT???

landlion35

We paid him money

U-N-C-L-E

Couldn't get him to agree to play for Kohl's Cash smh

landlion35

A true tragedy

Supremele

Excuse me, how much?

ShowdownValue

Why do other teams always sign their guys for reasonable deals but we always have to overpay? Frustrating but I’m excited Ag is staying

IdRatherBeLurking

Distinct lack of palm trees in Denver

Pure-Temporary

Do you even botanic gardens bro

ShowdownValue

This is true.

riverjacoozi15

Dude didn’t even score in the playoffs…

Iroh21

I feel like we have so much potential to win a ring, we just need Murray back and maybe better defense

ShowdownValue

100% psyched he’s staying But I absolutely hate how his agent had all the leverage. We either pay or get nothing and can’t replace him. I hate this rule for nba contracts.

teensonacid

its hilarious reading all the reactions from ill-informed handles on twitter and reddit. people forget how we played prior Jamal going down. keeping AG is/was ESSENTIAL to our title run. let's fucking GET IT

MartinRaccoon

I like Gordan a lot, but love MPJ. Does this hurt his chance to sign?

jayrod111

Mpj next please!!!!

TravisPeregrine

I think if his familiarity in our system improves and consequently his scoring goes up slightly this is an alright deal. His defense is definitely where he earns his money.

harrybaggin

Fuck yes!

penguin_torpedo

Ahh jeez man. I guess we had no option, we couldn't let Jeremi Grant happen all over again

Professional-Fly-846

Dude gets sent out to defend every teams best scorer. Glad he got paid.

ConstructionOk9979

This is basically the same thing Duncan Robinson just got, if you don't think Aaron Gordon is better than Duncan Robinson I encourage you to try watching some NBA games sometime.

Mojo17

Hmmm. I'll withhold judgement.

LegateDamar13

I'm happy. Love AG.

pu-in-sai

This is an absolute win! Stan K showing signs of getting the fuck into that sweet championship making lux tax, mmm! But can’t be satisfied with merely dipping toes in, Nuggets must live in the tax during the Jokic era!! Now to pay MPJ!

ParadeShitter

welcome home AG. only an overpay if he doesn't progress as a player. he's 25, surrounded by talent and a teammate of big honey. imo; a perfect fit if he can become even a serviceable 3-pt shooter (which is certainly a big if).

Keith_Bakker

Great deal dont @ me

InvestigatorCheap379

Gotta love this! MPJ is up next
