Should I stay or should I go?

For obvious reasons, the movie is much more enjoyable (and easy to follow) if you're already familiar with the characters. Source: someone who also watched the movie first
With that said, the movie is a bit more serious and violent while the show has several light-hearted episodes, but at the end of the day they're not THAT different so if you really didn't care for it maybe Cowboy Bebop is not for you
The philosophical, mystical and emotional elements of the movie don't make much sense without the context of the main series.
Laughing Bull's message to Spike about the blue eyes that see the truth is meaningless when viewed independent of the series.
Spike telling Elektra about a special woman he loves is also a much less meaningful moment if you do not know Spike as a character. Without knowing the impact this woman and her absence has had on his life, it's really not that noteworthy of a scene. And of course you would miss out on how the scene is tied in to the tale of the tiger striped cat and its greater narrative significance.
Who was that woman, anyways. Why did she leave?
Vincent and Elektra's final moments together are impactful enough, but not nearly as impactful as they are when viewed within the context of the MC's own endgame.
And what was the fixation with dreams and already being dead?
All of that loses its meaning without the context of the series.
“I watched Return of the King and didn’t understand it, should I watch the first two?”
I understand where you are coming from, I had a laugh. However, I do not think I felt like I didn't understand Cowboy Bebop. I was hoping to hear from the enlightened keepers of Cowboy Bebop that the movie is okay, but the show is as great as you have heard. I wanted to feel your passion for the series. I do feel some users shared that, while others... well.
This is what I legitimately do not understand. I really like Cowboy Bebop. I have a Bebop tattoo, Ive stalked Steve Blum and chased him down at Comic Con so I could freak out at meeting him. But in the end, it’s a tv show. Watch it or don’t. You’re going to a subreddit to ask if people who follow the subreddit if they would recommend the show. Seems like an obviously answer to me. But who knows, I don’t require validation to watch tv shows.
TLDR: ask a silly question, get a silly answer.
I feel you.
Sometimes subreddits are full of people that dislike the thing they are subredditing(?) like Joe Rogan subreddit, or most city-based subreddits.
I've got so little tv time that I want a winner. But I like your passion for the show.
The movie sucks compared to the series. Has a totally different feel.
What's wrong with you? It's like a bonus episode.
A bonus episode that isn't as good as the series. Like I said the whole tone and feel is different. It's only good if you have already seen the series and have connections to the characters.
It's fantastic. Unless you can offer specifics as to why you think it's bad?
On its own it's not bad. Compared to the series it's not the same. The music direction is off for me. The tone is different. I just don't like it as much as the series. Is that really such a terrible opinion to have?
Nah, I respect it, I just feel the complete opposite way that you do, so I was curious.
I'll have to give it another shot. It's been like 12 years since I've seen it.
Not at all, just curious as to why you felt/feel that way.
What film on Netflix? The movie isn’t streaming anywhere?
It's called Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. Released in 2002. Netflix Canada has it.
Huh. Another perk of living in Canada, then!
As for whether you should watch the series or not, asking people in a sub dedicated to a property of you should watch the thing they are all interested in is likely to garner only one response.
for the same reason I ask my 4 year old if we should have chocolate chip cookies.
I'd say you might enjoy the whole original TV series, separately from that movie. (And than could enjoy the movie more, maybe)
The movie yes does have most essencial elements of what makes Cowboy Bebop attractive, I like it too, though it's kind of... well assorted, packaged in a bit fancy way, and made to be not so heavy. (ig this is what other ppl here implies)
Maybe you'll be blown by the main series, which each of them is an unforgettable dinner with volume and various amazing taste.
my wife did really enjoy the movie, maybe not the end, but she enjoyed the journey. So was debating moving the series into our regular scheduled programming. With two little kids under our belt, tv choices are limited and exclusive.
Thanks for the input!
May I ask why you watched the movie before the series? You done goofed. (Joking)
The movie takes place in between episodes 22 - 23, and does touch basis with some of the series. It's basically like watching another episode.
I suggest you watch episodes 1 - 22, the movie, then 23 - 26 to better appreciate the movie.
I started Breaking Bad mid-season 4, watched that season and then went back to season 1. I am sick that way.
Ah, Breaking Bad is good. I haven't watched the movie or the spin off series.
