That one time when I fought the enemies without knowing that they kept endlessly respawning, so I just kept fighting them until my fish brain noticed that there's no end
Run. Nothing there is worth fighting, but avoid the lasers with the HUGE horde.
Find a hole to drop down, find a key, then move on to Upper Ward.
Otherwise-- Run. You're made out of win and deserve to progress. And unless you can handle two-shotting the mobs in a controlled environment, you'll BE controlled.
Bit of a walkthrough but here are my top tips for things to grab in this area, even if you get through it already but want 100% completion trophies.
Besides the bell maidens there's some worthwhile things to grab. The big one for 100% game completion is the Upper Cathedral Ward key. There's a bell maiden hunting where to find this as you'll hear but not be able to see her. When you get to the rooftop with stairs heading downward towards a second Amygdala shooting lasers, you're in the right spot. Stay on that rooftop, turn back and look on the left railing for an opening to drop down. This is where you'll find the key, inside the cell on a body in a chair, and the bell maiden to stop the nearby large enemies from respawning, and a chest with the Tiny Tonitrus hunters tool.
Otherwise there's lots of Blood Chunks in this area mainly near the ground level, after fighting your way through the chapel. When you get the second lantern (just inside the chapel, after the aforementioned laser shooter) be sure to get the Wandering Madness that runs away to your left, it drops some Chunks. The bottom of the chapel has the previous area known as the Hypogean Gaol ("Underground Jail") but its lantern has been broken, by someone or something. If you've come here before fighting Amelia there's a side door that you could've opened to exit the chapel without engaging the hunter trio, otherwise you'll have to kill them or avoid their aggro. The bottom of the chapel has more chunks and an optional boss fight.
Leaving the chapel and heading left, there's a pathway up some stairs on your left, the second turn left past these stairs leads to an elevator shortcut back to the first lantern. This elevator is key, halfway down there's an opening leading to a warp pool that gets you to a bell maiden that can give some trouble if not killed. There's more chunks to be found on this path as well, and any of the fleshy beasts made of limbs have a chance to drop Twin Bloodstone Shards and/or Blood Chunks so they're worth killing with a serrated weapon and/or Fire damage, get them in their sides or from behind like with other scourge beasts.
When you get this far, search the area for a high level Tempering Radial Blood Gem, it gives +18% physical damage and is super helpful to go on your main trick weapon at this point in the game. If you've found the warp pool from the elevator spot, exit that pool room left to head towards this blood gem, it's to your left again inside a dark building and guarded by a sniper and another limb beast, all the way down.
Heading out of this house and to your right leads towards some Cramped Caskets which are deadly at range and in CQC, hit their sides when they do a slam attack. Bolt damage is effective, as is Thrust and I think Fire. Past them is the fog gate for the required boss fight to proceed, if you go left instead/away from the fog gate there's plenty more caskets and loot, eventually you're back near the Chapel again and continuing past it will lead to a dead end with the Tonitrus weapon (provided you didn't get it from the Hypogean Gaol, you can only access the Gaol if killed by the Bagmen who appear before fighting Vicar Amelia). This weapon is also needed for 100%.
Otherwise there are more chunks, Madman's Knowledge, coldblood pickups, Bolt paper, and whatever enemy drops to find.
This is a tough area, jumping in difficulty even from the Byrgenwerth and Woods areas, but it can give you a boost in power with the Chunks and that tempering gem plus whatever echoes you can escape with. The true horror of Yharnam is now revealed.
Gaining access to the Upper Cathedral Ward is needed for 100% and also unlocks a new armor set, a hunters tool, and an optional quest objective for the Vilebloods (behind an optional boss, one of my favorites). If you don't know what they are then you have a path to find in the Forbidden Woods to get you to the backside of Iosefka's clinic, I can tell you about that too. The Cainhurst Summons you find in the Clinic gets you to the Cainhurst castle area by way of Hemwick Charnel Lane. If none of this makes sense then you missed a more obscure secret for first time players and I can explain lol.
I did lol I've played through the game at least thirteen times if not more! Remembering where to go for the good stuff lined my mind with eyes.
There's another good gem in the first cell next to the first bell maiden, a 16% Bolt gem but really needs two others to go with it to make a decent Bolt weapon.
There's also a couple of Runes, Heir and Arcane Lake, but most of what I left out isn't too hard to find if you search each room, I really wanted to call out the stuff that's easy to miss!
Your comment makes me wish for a Hunters Salutation that removes your character's hat while bowing with a similar hand motion as the regular bow! Especially for those Top Hat-wearing Hunters who admire formality, beauty, and justice, as the very essence of our humanity.
Cheers to you!
Donât die
Not but forreal, target the bell bitches, thereâs one hidden one that you can get to by falling off to the right on the building right before the laser bridge.
Also just skip the gank trio. Youâll know what I mean when you get there.
Gank trio led to me taking a 2 year break from the game. When I returned I skipped them and went on to beat the game and DLC. Came back later and womped 'em. Listen to this man and skip it.
it was that easy I targeted them and bring them slowly to the other bell before them there is always one of them that goes first with a bigger agro than the other 2
I don't think you're technically supposed to be here yet. I think the game wants you to do the Frontier and some Chalices first to really take advantage of them.
I think you're right. I've done a few Chalices, but don't remember how to get to the Frontier. I got a handle on the combat pretty quick, but my memory of where to go is shot.
The area with the wagon body part monsters may be tempting to run past but thereâs a bunch of blood chunks there you shouldnât miss. Also thereâs a hidden path halfway up the elevator in that same area that can skip you to the boss without taking much damage
Right. So thereâs people here saying that you gotta just run trough because thereâs no good loot in there. But there are actually some decent bloodstone materials in that area iirc (I played Bloodborne like 6 years ago). So Iâd suggest: Run trough, but with open eyes. Try and sprint in & out to pick up items!
go for the feminine figures carrying a bell most of the enemies under her control will be staggered for a few seconds and obviously avoid the kidnappers or if you feel brave to fight make sure is a 1v1 and be extremely careful only attack more than once when they are powering up after you done enough damage it should give you enough time for 2 to 3 hits maybe more and if your damage is enough those will be enough to kill them and be aware of the hunterâs hunters
Practice your parries and crowd control against the central yharnam mobs since this village has reskinned enemeis for the first part. Focus on the loot and don't try to fight everything.
Shoot the dogs. They are a pain but any blood damage will bring them down, allowing you to get a free lethal attack.
If you get a chance to clear some areas donât hesitate to explore.
Certain doors may be opened for hunters whoâs fortune takes them to the dark corners of this space, leading to the daughter of the cosmos and an esteemed alien representative and their horde.
Also this isnât as much as a tip just a nice lore detail, but when you finish this area, look up what the chorus in the background is actually singing.
If you're struggling getting around certain areas and not locked into a legit playthrough, looking up out of map glitches in the area can spread it up tremendously while still giving access to some neat items.
The key to Upper Cathedral Ward however isn't but Im pretty sure the key is before the map skip
This is the only answer. The rest of you are cowards. Telling someone to run. It was more helpful when everyone said "get gud, lol."
There's tons of decent stuff to pick up, including a weapon, and, depending on when you arrive, an NPC (if you're into the lore), or a massive shortcut to a boss.
Just like the rest of the game, take your time, learn the move sets, and take enemies one at a time until you get good enough, then you can run and slay with impunity.
"Run." This type of game isn't for you if you're afraid to learn to fight. What's everyone's advice for the Orphan? "Don't"?
You know what's cool about the soulsbourne series, people can play how they want/what works best
The advice that majority of seasoned players would suggest and even the wiki suggests is to not wasting time or bloodvials and to just run past everything. Belittling a community for providing a totally valid and frequently used strategy in soulsbourn just makes you look like an asshole.
Legit my advice on second playthrough just run through it they ain't with getting when u get near the thing that shoots beams drop down before u encounter first old lady follow that path u should get a special key for cathedral ward gl u will know when u see it
You just need to run a ton in this area. Also if you want to, you can watch a video to find the key that takes you to the top area of the Cathedral Ward.....
Or you know, you could just glitch your way through the area to instantly get to the boss (but it's recommended to do this from ng+ cause you don't want to not experience the game.
RUN. Run past everything to get the bell ringing ladies. If you don't, you'll be swarmed. Also, I left some areas until I was leveled up more. But that's just me. I run through a lot of that area to get what I need. When you get to the area with the three npcs, good luck. I run past them or cheese them a bit.
I just ran past all the bullshit and gunned it for the boss by new game + and plus 2 lol. Recommend killing bell ladies first and then the enemies will be so much easier :)
Take your time, explore, donât be too pressed about the blood echos. Just let yourself learn the area. Thereâs a few hidden areas, if you try too hard to get to the boss, u might miss out on some stuff.
So this is easier said than done, but my advice it to just book it. Don't bother with the bell ringer, there are a few drops you can do to cut the time. It may be wise to understand the route
I personally just run around the unseen village like a chicken that lost its head and eventually I got to the boss area. Works everytime on my 3 playthroughs.
Everyone here giving good advice, but one thing I haven't seen is the importance of getting all your chunks in this area. Lots of crawlers and floor loot that are chunks to help get you to +9 which is crucial late game. Otherwise, RUN and kill anyone ringing a bell lol. Good luck Hunter
I used to hate this place (still do) when I first played. Went through and meticulously killed every enemy even when they respawned. Don't do that. Run past every enemy and kill the bell ringers. Play this place like a Speedrun. Careful with the nightmare pig in the little cove, he will charge faster and further than you think he will. Give him a proctology exam. Basically just run past every other enemy tho. Weave/ zigzag past the bucket boys spitting goo at you. There's also a wolf made of legs. I don't have a tip for him, I just wanted to mention that.
Boss is similar, kill the bell girls first and then go for the legs. He's only legs.
Everybody saying just run to the bell ladies is right, but also: this is the most fertile ground in the game for bloodstone chunks, so don't be sloppy and unthorough. An early trip there can get your primary to +9 or two weapons very close to it.
The Amygdala that shoot lasers always do so in the same exact firing pattern. Watch the laser carefully to see where it doesn't go and that's a safe spot to take cover.
Additionally, the laser damages enemies. Feel free to intentionally push them into it for big funnies.
Kill the screaming ladies then you can kill everything for some big money. Youâll have to run past everything to kill the lady, then they donât respawn when you kill them
Ok so. I like to explore. So I like to be able to. Run until you find the bell ringers and kill them QUICK thatâll get rid of the angry red dudes and stop them from spawning. Thatâll give you space to kill the dudes that stay dead. Definitely avoid the laser no matter what. Theres a small ledge to drop down to in addition to the hole with the key. Itâs right before the laser.
Patience and youâll master it in no time!
Always try to find the bell ringing woman and kill her first then fight, try to lure hunters to fight 1v1, use beckoning bell, if worst comes to worst you can just use the best technique in the game and RUN!!!!
Donât waste time fighting. Find the bell ladies and silence them.
When you get to that one part (youâll know it when you see it.) Donât fight, Just run, and hope that luck is on your side.
Thereâs a key for an optional area here... although it is pretty much on the main path.
Once you reach a familiar place, RUN until the end. Nothing worth it when you get to the street level, HUGE difficulty spike and enemies are super tough and hard to read. Just get outta there asap
Run
#
Literally came to say this.
Same thođ
*Run by AWOLNATION starts playing!*
I literally went platinum in the game and run without looking back every time. I hate this area
It gets worse the deeper you go into it.
Lasers, bombs and gank squads all over the shop
donât bother fighting, just find those who ring the bells and end them.
That one time when I fought the enemies without knowing that they kept endlessly respawning, so I just kept fighting them until my fish brain noticed that there's no end
I just imagine that you noticed after like 3 hours and was like, âWait, didnât i just kill you?â
âWow they really filled this area up! I wouldnât mind it so much if it wasnât for that horrible music!â
No Fish brain. Spartan Mind. Never forget Noble Team 6
I was thinking the same thing, that's about all I could recommend without potentially spoiling some of other areas there.
Honestly, yeah lol
This is the best advice

Damn, dude. You ARE the good blood that guides đ
Thanks dude! I'm free for questions on any of these From Software games too if anyone has any!
Lol this is one of my favorite games, if I can help others enjoy it to the fullest extent then that makes my day!
Donât give up.
Run run and run⊠summon a friend if you need and try r/huntersbell
When you hit an enemy it does damage
Holy shit no way

Yup, and when you get hit, believe it or not, dead

What village?
So easily forgotten. Wait...
Donât die Not but forreal, target the bell bitches, thereâs one hidden one that you can get to by falling off to the right on the building right before the laser bridge. Also just skip the gank trio. Youâll know what I mean when you get there.
I fought the gank trio and for what⊠10 quick silver bullets, some bolt paper and a rune I have never used đȘ
Gank trio led to me taking a 2 year break from the game. When I returned I skipped them and went on to beat the game and DLC. Came back later and womped 'em. Listen to this man and skip it.
Iâm on a break rn, just after killing Rom i kinda⊠lost interest? I want to finish it but i donât want to force it
Things are just getting interesting.
Damn man youâre missing out on like 2/3 of the game
The easiest way is to lure them downstairs and lock yourself into a cell, they canât open doors so you can just poke them from a distance lol.
it was that easy I targeted them and bring them slowly to the other bell before them there is always one of them that goes first with a bigger agro than the other 2
I run past the trio to the short cut elevator. Usually one dies falling down shaft. Down. Bait. Up. Repeat. Move on
The fact that I had to beat them using bugs shows how utterly well designed they are!
those dudes were such a waste of time!!! and for absolute no reward
Don't be seen
or you could say, be unseen
How do you do that?
Kill everything
Glasses
Glasses?
He is correct. This is how you see the village.
Behold, a paleblood sky!
Despicable woman ahead
Despicable me ahead
Kill the bell maidens then go back and fight the enemies
Hunt the Bell bitches
Kill the bells lady and run to the next lantern and THEN you can explore
I JUST got here. Itâs my first time through since launch and thought âwow the difficulty really spikes after Rom!â.
Exactly! It really caught me off guard
Instead of going to Yhar'Gul, the Lesser Amygdala has to take you there.
You may want to bring a towel.
Don't know, never seen it.
The area with the wagon body part monsters may be tempting to run past but thereâs a bunch of blood chunks there you shouldnât miss. Also thereâs a hidden path halfway up the elevator in that same area that can skip you to the boss without taking much damage
If you see a carriage, donât fucking go near it
Kill the bell ladies. They have been ringing those damn bells all night and I canât sleep! Happy hunting!
Yield. Give up. Submit. Surrender. Synonyms.
place has a whole ass metric ton of chunks especially in and around the hypogean gaol so be sure to pick those up
go for the feminine figures carrying a bell most of the enemies under her control will be staggered for a few seconds and obviously avoid the kidnappers or if you feel brave to fight make sure is a 1v1 and be extremely careful only attack more than once when they are powering up after you done enough damage it should give you enough time for 2 to 3 hits maybe more and if your damage is enough those will be enough to kill them and be aware of the hunterâs hunters
Just keep moving until you kill the nearest bell maiden.
Just run
Saw cleaver + Fence = Profit.
Find the chime maidens
Practice your parries and crowd control against the central yharnam mobs since this village has reskinned enemeis for the first part. Focus on the loot and don't try to fight everything. Shoot the dogs. They are a pain but any blood damage will bring them down, allowing you to get a free lethal attack.
Enjoy, best part in the game imo
Pointy end of weapon goes into bad man
If you get a chance to clear some areas donât hesitate to explore. Certain doors may be opened for hunters whoâs fortune takes them to the dark corners of this space, leading to the daughter of the cosmos and an esteemed alien representative and their horde.
Donât die
Run.
Donât take damage.
DONT FORGET THE UPPER CATHEDRAL WARD KEY
Run. Donât look back.
Run that's it
Also this isnât as much as a tip just a nice lore detail, but when you finish this area, look up what the chorus in the background is actually singing.
If you see any females, just kill em.
Donât bother fighting anything just run past it all, only 1 or 2 items are worth taking in this place
Fucking Run
run
Run bitch ruuuun!
Just run

The bell wielding ladies are everywhere, if you're adamant on clearing an are seek them out and attack
Run and avoid the lasers

Donât fight, run. Keep running. The only safe place is the boss fight
If you're struggling getting around certain areas and not locked into a legit playthrough, looking up out of map glitches in the area can spread it up tremendously while still giving access to some neat items. The key to Upper Cathedral Ward however isn't but Im pretty sure the key is before the map skip
It's most definitely after the skip area, I was just there yesterday lol
go slow and kill everything one at a time.
This is the only answer. The rest of you are cowards. Telling someone to run. It was more helpful when everyone said "get gud, lol." nobody's afraid to fight, it's just a nuisance.

Itâs right before the laser. Patience and youâll master it in no time!
should try playing with a higher resolution
See those red enemies? Don't bother fighting them, not before you killed the nearest Bell Maiden. (they give mobs a stat buff and revives them)
Always try to find the bell ringing woman and kill her first then fight, try to lure hunters to fight 1v1, use beckoning bell, if worst comes to worst you can just use the best technique in the game and RUN!!!!
Kill the bell ringing women then, the other enemies.
Do the skip
Run straight home and donât talk to anyone on the way.
Use the Saw Spear to glitch through a fence at the start and skip the whole level lol
Donât waste time fighting. Find the bell ladies and silence them. When you get to that one part (youâll know it when you see it.) Donât fight, Just run, and hope that luck is on your side.
Is this a good farming area?
Wear glasses
Just see it.
Run, and never look back.
Kill the bell bitches
Tune the volume up for that banger soundtrack!
Thereâs a key for an optional area here... although it is pretty much on the main path. Once you reach a familiar place, RUN until the end. Nothing worth it when you get to the street level, HUGE difficulty spike and enemies are super tough and hard to read. Just get outta there asap
Kill the witch
Donât die
Dont die
Run and beware for ambushes their everywhere here always check behind you and if you go in the dark be careful and constantly dodge
Try to see it
Start seeing lmao
Look up yahar gul skip used in speedruns, really easy and I always do it
