Oh man I'm so excited to see what happens tomorrow.
I am content to stop voting. However this shakes out now, it will be fair. I have nothing but respect for all three of these films.
Yeah I'm the same. Too hard to pick. I'm just gonna watch from now on lol 👀
Fuck, you do not want to know how fucking long I pondered this, and it feels like every second I decide differently...
These three are so God damn good
I’ve never watched phantasm, is it really that good?
It's the best
It’s a masterpiece.
Not just the greatest Batman project, but in my opinion, one of the greatest films ever made. A brilliant modern noir that stands up against classics of the genre.
Mask of PHANTASM. Unfortunately
Y'all trippin. Mask of phantasm is the epitome of batman stories. Bittersweet/hollow ending, gray morals, and a well written mystery complete with both psychological sides of Bruce/Batman. Flawless batman story imo, while TDK and The Batman both have SOMETHING they do that is not *perfect* per se, or at the very least, not an embodiment of the typical batman story of atmosphere. The batman gets really close especially with GOTHAM but misses in a few areas. Great batman movie but just an Ok movie, with no real change throughout. Watching it the second time was not as fun as the first. TDK loses a lot of gotham's charm in place or realism, but it's endlessly rewarchable due to the action scenes and the nonstop rollercoaster that Nolan created. But There is no batman without Gotham
So i vote for The Batman. Just because movie wise it loses its charm with each viewing, while the others never get old. Still definitely deserves third place, but tbh some of those JL and Batman Robin animated movies are really well done. JL dark is a personal fav of mine especially with how batman is done
Mask of the phantasm
The Batman. Tied between that and The Dark Knight, but leaning on The Batman since it’s newer and there’s no way to judge it’s longevity.
And sorry, but there’s not a world where I see it holding up in twenty years time like Phantasm. The Batman is a good/fun flick but didn’t have the amount of emotional input or creativity that Phantasm has. The Dark Knight is the most famous, but it neglects the origins at times and I feel 89 Batman probably had more lasting impact.
Another thing worth mentioning is that Phantasm is the best portrayal of Bruce in my opinion. Most live action movies seem to ignore that Bruce is a kind and compassionate person suffering from extreme trauma. I feel like The Batman and The Dark Knight focused too much on his trauma and wealth to make his character truly shine.
All of you choosing Phantasm are breaking my heart.
Also OP, why don't you just create a poll where we can vote there?
I'm sorry but The Dark Knight and Mask of the Phantasm are probably my two favorite Batman movies ever
I can't choose! I loved the batman but conroys batman is elite (so is pattinsons). And tdk is a great movie.
However it depends on whether good refers to the movie or whether it does justice to Batman
The Batman or TDK. MOTP is just, imo, the best interpretation of Batman ever. I do really love all three, though.
That being said I'm only picking it because it's more likely to go than TDK, which it should. Of the three left while it may be the better movie, it's the lesser Batman movie. Phantasm is one of the best takes on the character in existence. Both it's portrayals of Batman and Joker far exceed any other attempt at the characters. The Batman is about even with TDK. It does some aspects of the character right and some wrong. The ones it does right are amazing, but there are still the ones it gets wrong.
The Dark Knight
It has so many plot holes. You wouldn’t even remember this movie were it not for Heath Ledger.
The amount of plot contrivances in TDK is funny. And I guess people just pretend they aren't there? Rises is unfairly hated for that reason, but the ones in TDK are just as stupid.
Oh I completely agree. How about the fact that many of the Joker’s ridiculous plans rely on insanely improbable factors that are completely outside of his control? His entire tactic in the police station revolves around him being placed in a very specific cell with a very specific officer on duty within whom he’s somehow surgically inserted a cell phone, and also in the same plot he needs to be held in an interrogation cell with a cop in there with him whom he can manipulate.
Like, seriously. At some point, suspension of disbelief fails us. Also how did he fill the entire fucking hospital with bombs? It’s easy to ignore this stuff because haha funny nurse outfit and Heath’s performance is legendary, but this writing is dog shit.
There’s a couple things wrong with what your saying. He put the bomb in one of his henchman’s stomachs, not the guards. As well as I wouldn’t say that it needed to be some specific cop he’s able to manipulate, he’s just that good at manipulating people, as is shown throughout the movie, such as when he manipulated Batman in the scene right before that. But don’t get me wrong, you are right in that it is a stretch that he knew his goon (with the stomach bomb) was going to be placed in the perfect spot to disrupt the prescient long enough for him to get Lau and leave.
That's basically all of Nolan's Batman films. For the time, they were great, and they had some phenomenal actors, but the writing is a mess, and clearly ashamed of the source material.
And yet a very loud and extremely annoying contingent in this sub still thinks the sun rises and sets from these movies and refuses to acknowledge a single flaw in them, especially TDK.
Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying it’s a bad movie by any stretch. It’s a very good one. But the writing is a mess, it’s riddled with enormous plot holes and continuity errors (Batman leaving the Joker with the people at his party), many character motivations/actions make no sense (Harvey is actually convinced that the Joker is not responsible for murdering Rachel even though he masterminded this huge plan on his own goddamn initiative), etc.
Again, good movie. Not the best on this list.
To me personally that plot holes don't matter that much, they doesn't take away from the narrative or message of the film and everything else in it is amazing, but I understand how plot holes can bother someone a lot as they can take away from the immersion
And that’s fine. Again, I repeatedly said the movie is quite good. It’s easy to ignore these holes, but I contend to you that it would not nearly be as beloved if Heath Ledger had not put in the work he did. He completely carries the movie. Without him, the flaws would be glaring.
As evidence of this, look no further than the very next movie in the series. An absolute mess, and people are much more likely to call it a mess because Heath Ledger isn’t there doing his magic tricks.
Ledger is absolutely amazing in the film but I wouldn't say he is carrying it, Bale, Caine and Eckhart do very good jobs in their roles.
And I know this is a hot take but I actually like TDKR, just next do Batman begins and TDK it's not ok not on thier level
> And clearly ashamed of the source material.
This is the most succinct way to describe why I’ve never been as big of a fan of Nolan’s movies as everyone else seems to be. They’re Nolan movies first, Batman movies second.
Nolan openly admitted he was never really a comic book fan to begin with. He read some comics as research for the movies but had no really strong attachment to the source material at all.
The Dark Knight. Joker carried the whole damn movie! Seriously? Without Heath's performance that movie would be middle of the pack.
I really really liked that movie… but out of these 3?
Sorry, The Batman, it’s time to go.
Mask at number 3? Not bad!
It should be number one, easily
The Dark Knight never been a fan of Nolan's grounded realism and creative liberties in adapting batman
everyone is saying that People voting Phantasm are overrating the Batman but not TDK??? i stg the bias towards this movie is INSANE, it doesnt even respect the source material as much as the others and if it werent for Joker and Two Face it would not be that good, yall are forgetting this is a poll for the best **Batman** movie and in that criteria the goddamn lego batman movie does a better job.
I can't believe I had to search so far down this sub to find a comment like this. Well said.
honestly I don't consider TDK a better movie, full stop. The plot contrivances to make Joker's plans work are ridiculous, the movie is paced like a 2 hr climax that grinds to a halt after Joker is stopped, the fight choreography is awful, the editing is sloppy and confusing in action scenes, the dialogue is a lot of profound-sounding/quotable platitudes that don't actually mean anything... It's a mediocre film in which Ledger distracts people from its many flaws.
Phantasms gotta go
The Batman, everyone saying phantasm is suffering from recency bias
It's been like 7 months
Everyone that has a different opinion is suffering from recency bias
Or people who prefer Phantasm have nostalgia goggles on
Just saw Phantasm in theatres. Still the best Batman movie imo
This is getting real tricky.
Phantasm is next. :(
Mask of Phantasm
Mask of the Phantasm
The only top 3 I woukda been happy with. Gonna have to go Phantasm 3, The Batman 2 and TDK 1
Phantasm is the best Batman movie ever made. Y’all tripping.
The answer here is the Dark Knight.
Enough! From the clown!
Why are you booing him? He’s right.
This sucks to vote, but The Batman has to go
Arghhhh uhh The Batman.
Very hard, but will go with The Batman
STOP THE COUNT
The batman is the worst of the 3
The Batman. Honestly, how did it even make it this far?
Definition of overrated: The Batman
The Batman needs to go. Also are you guys insane? Begins is better than the Batman
The Batman is the worst, I'm surprised it ranked higher than Batman Begins l.
The batman is the worst
The newest Batman.
The remaining three are my top three, so it’s tough, but…Phantasm.
This is so difficult… If I had to choose, I’d go The Batman. Mask is just such a perfect blend of great story telling, fleshed out/ nuanced characters, atmosphere, and Joker/Batman dynamic that it edges out The Batman for me.
mask of the phantasm
Fuck everyone voting for Mask Of The Phantasm, it should be between it and The Batman.
The Dark Knight is overrated, apart from Heath Ledger's legendary performance its an average and derivative crime drama.
The Batman. Awesome but not as great as phantasm or TDK
Phantasm. God damn that movie is good though
Then change your vote to The Batman
People here are seriously over rating The Batman.
Its decent, that’s about it.
Same goes for TDK. One guy carried the whole movie
Actually Aaron Eckhart killed it too. And the whole movie is a wild ride. And it’s the only Batman movie with a serious, intelligent message.
TDK’s message: It’s a 9/11 allegory about necessary evils and the ethical difference between breaking rules and remaking them. In the face of terrorism, Batman tortures, conducts mass surveillance, uses extrajudicial violence. What makes him heroic, beyond his righteous ends, is what makes him different from the US response to 9/11—he makes clear that he is a criminal (“the Dark Knight”), he embraces accountability, he makes every effort to ensure that Gotham and its justice system are not remade in Batman’s image.
Broadly, the moral of the story is that if you’re gonna do the wrong thing for the right reasons, you can’t hide behind having the right reasons and must own that you’ve done the wrong thing. If you don’t, you’ll do something much worse than breaking rules—you’ll erase them.
*The Batman* is an excellent movie and in some ways better than TDK, in some ways worse. Beautiful visuals and IMO Pattinson is the best Batman. But I don’t think it has a real message, that it’s making any substantial point that has IRL meaning. Batman’s character arc in the movie is not, to me, a message. For the record, a Batman movie doesn’t need a message, but TDK really has something to say IMO and it sets it apart.
Honestly, I get that Rachel (Maggie Gylenhal) gets overlooked, but she did a damn good job as well.
But I'm partial to the guy with the hungry dogs...who gets fed to his dogs by joker then the dogs are loyal to him instead....
Agree she did great. Obviously there are standouts but the whole cast was great.
What do you think the message of the Batman was?
>And it’s the only Batman movie with a serious, intelligent message.
Guess you skipped The Batman
Tough choices, the dark knight.
All 3 of these movies are great movies. Although i didnt like emo batman, The batman was a really good movie.
I am fine with any of these winning.
But if I have to make Sophie’s Choice here, I will vote
You heard me.
Dark Knight easily
The Batman - Overly long with a drawn out 3rd act. The movie itself was terribly paced.
Please don’t make The Batman come above The Dark Knight!
Extremely tough but I'm going The Batman.
Y'all are crazy voting for mask of the phantasm. It's miles better than the batman.
It's also miles better than TDK. Both Phantasm and The Batman capture the character far better than TDK. Bruce Wayne is the most dull part of TDK.
The Batman (2022)
Mask of the phantasm is my vote
The Batman. It’s not bad, the other two are masterpieces
The batman. The real fight begins!
Fuck that's one of the hardest choice possible!!
Let's say the Batman tho...
As much as I love it, The Batman.
As much as I love the film, I'm gonna vote The Dark Knight. I absolutely love Bruce's portrayal in The Batman, and especially Mask of The Phantasm (the 🐐). The Dark Knight excels at being an extremely well made movie, but The Batman and MoTP focus much more on Batman as a character.
The Batman... tough pick
