FragrantGangsta

I was completely unaware of this poll but seeing Phantasm hasn't been eliminated makes me so proud of this community

chickthief

Agreed!

TabrisVI

I’m here rooting it takes the top spot, but it’s going to have to split hairs over what the poll is asking. Like, TDK is, imo, a better produced movie than The Batman or Phantasm. There are just some iconic shots in that movie that are some of my favorites in cinema, let alone Batman films. But The Batman and Phantasm are better *Batman* movies, as in they handle the character of Batman waaaay better than TDK. I’d say nothing has topped Phantasm in its handling of Bruce Wayne as a human character in any medium except maybe the Telltale games, but The Batman, again, is definitely a better *executed* film.

LukeImInTheGrass

Phantasm is top 4 AT LEAST

CliffDraws

I’ve never seen it, but I haven’t voted for it yet because the reviews say it’s very good. I’m trying to be fair.

Jedisebas2001

It's peak Batman. As much as I love the rest of the top 5, nothing will ever get me as the "Forgive me, I never counted on being happy" scene. Please watch in when you can.

LordOfTheBushes

It's very arguably the best movie on this list. I'd highly advise watching it (it's on HBO Max) before voting much further in the poll.

NerdNuncle

Wholeheartedly agreed. Easily the best Batman film yet

rollins99

I think I’m in the minority but I honestly did not enjoy Phantasm as much as the rest. I’m comparison, I thought the animated Mr Freeze movie was honestly better but maybe that’s just me

SteamMachine2023

....why? Phantasm is probably the best one. Great origin story, it shows the division between Bruce and batman better than any other movie. It's completely stand alone but also improved every other batman mythos at the same time. The others are good, but I don't think they pull in all the elements like phantasm does. Great soundtrack, great story, great performances, great art direction. I'm not sure what else you want.

Useful_Efficiency_44

Phantasm is just pretty straightforward I think. I went on the imbd reviews and saw that a lot of the reviews that don't review it so stellar find it boring. I have to agree. I loved it as a child but it doesn't really hold my attention for all it's time. It has some lovely moments however.

[deleted]

Batman 89, also why was Batman Under The Red Hood not included in this list?

POOH_IN_A_TUXEDO

It's only the theatrical releases I think.

binziaknight

Then why is the Snyder cut on it?

POOH_IN_A_TUXEDO

Hmmm, not sure. Maybe because it was intended to be one?

binziaknight

🤷🏻‍♂️ and because I don't know them what are the two in the top row on the left

lt_skittles

Batman the movie (1966) and Batman (1989)

SpacemanChad7365

Snyder Cut is basically Justice League, just longer.

binziaknight

Ehhhhh, there's a 2 hour difference. Yes it's the "same movie" but it's completly different. But that wasn't the point, it wasn't released in theaters was the point, just like Under the Red Hood

TheOneWhoCutstheRope

It did feel like the same movie just two hours longer

Scrolled way way too far for this.

No, it's a perfect masterpiece that can't be criticized /s In all seriousness, I would not be surprised if it full out wins.

ThePaineOne

That would be a shame.

Jermobooka

Compared to all the others, Batman ‘89 isn’t really the greatest, so I’ll go with that one.

Batman 1989 EDIT: I just realized that Batman and Robin outlasted Batman v Superman. That is incredibly funny, I didn’t know this subreddit was this based.

Knucklesx55

Batman ‘89 Sad to say, but we’re down to the nitty gritty

KeineSchneit

People on a Batman sub unironically picking 89 over Begins or The Batman… Edit: I think I worded this poorly given How voting is done…? I meant that it’s weird people AREN’T voting out 89. Begins and The Batman are much better films. By “picking” I meant picking it as the better movie. ![gif](giphy|ck5JRWob7folZ7d97I|downsized)

FrozeninIce248

Both those films are better than 89

ab316_1punchd

If this sub's user base was more comic centric then 89 might have been eliminated WAY earlier.

HotPrior819

So would begins, Rises, and TDK for that matter. With Lego and Phantasm taking the top

ab316_1punchd

Begins and TDK would fare better, The Batman could go for the third or second depending on if it's time to take things seriously. The Snyder and Burton ones would be among the earliest to be eliminated, Batman Forever might fare surprisingly high.

HotPrior819

Begins completely alters Ra's Al Ghul( and not just making him an Irish man). It added a non existent character to his background in Rachel and amalgamated his multiple martial arts teachers into one. Both films stripped Bruce of his scientific and inventive genius, instead attributing it to appropriated military tech or Lucius. The Joker only takes ques from one of his stories, and also loses his considerable scientific genius. Bruce does minimal detective work in any of Nolan's films. They're good movies, but as Batman films they have many faults.

ab316_1punchd

The Nolan films definitely do have faults, I'm saying they'll probably fare better than Burton, Snyder and Batman & Robin on this regard. Besides every Batman media have added many original characters, Alexander Knox and Carl Grisson for 89, Max Schreck for Returns, Chase Meridian for Forever, Rachel Dawes in Nolan trilogy, Bella Real and the victims in The Batman. And where original characters didn't show up (Batman & Robin, Batman V Superman), the existing characters were mercilessly butchered. The difference is how to make the characters work, and 66 and BTAS did the best in that regard where original characters became iconic DC stalwarts, Harley Quinn for TAS and Barbara Gordon for 66.

[deleted]

Guys I’m sorry, but 89 Batman should have been off the list a long time ago. It’s a baddddd movie. If you watched it again today and then watched any of the movies from the last ten years you would agree

slfxxplsv

Nah it’s a definitely great movie. Well acted, amazing score, awesome visuals. That said tho I stand firm in saying it’s a bad representation of Batman and his mythos outside of the dark tone. Tim Burton was just makin shit up lol

redmoon714

I can’t think of a better scored Batman movie how it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar is baffling.

[deleted]

Hell no . Batman 89 is fantastic. In my view ONLY Dark Knight is better.

[deleted]

How old were you when 89 came out?

Mcclane88

It’s my second favorite behind The Dark Knight and I was born a couple of years after it came out.

tommo020

Weird question, why does it matter?

[deleted]

Because I think most people who think 89 is a good movie were probably teenagers or kids when the movie came out and there’s a level of nostalgia about it

FickleChard6904

Sorry to disprove your theory, but I wasn’t even born and I think it’s the 2nd best on here

Recent_Pack2776

Yeah but you still probably watched it a lot as a kid

FickleChard6904

No more often than any of the others up here. It’s not a good adaptation in terms of accuracy to the comics, but it’s a good action film that gets a lot of things about the characters right. Nicholson is obviously a great Bronze Age Joker, Keaton’s performance is probably more layered than even Bale’s was, really selling Bruce’s trauma, and Michael Gough is still one of the best representations of Alfred we’ve had. Basinger’s Vicky is obviously a little weak even for the time, an unfortunate screamy love interest a la temple of doom, but is still solid. Hingle’s Gordon is unfortunately pretty useless, but they’re going for a golden age Gordon here

Mcclane88

What does that matter? I saw the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy when I was a kid, am I not allowed to say I like those films without you thinking it’s nostalgia based? Also, what’s the cut off point for this nostalgia argument? I saw Batman Begins in theaters when I was 13 am I not allowed to like that movie either?

Minejack777

Personally I think y'all making this argument are rather stupid. You don't know anything about us! I personally watched 89 for the first time this year, and it's my #3, behind TB and TDK

[deleted]

Your assumption is correct but its a dam good film. Back when Tim Burton was a great director.

HotPrior819

I mean, the same could be said of Begins and TDK. Looking back on them without nostalgia, they don't really portray the character in a faithful way. Great movies, but more on the strength of things that would make any movie great, than things that would make a Batman movie great.

StreetSmarts15

I love Batman 89 I wasn’t even a thought when it came out

HotPrior819

Arguable. It is however a pretty good Batman film. While it's execution might be in question, there's no denying it's one of the few that tried to show multiple aspects of both Batman and the Joker for that matter.

PepsiPerfect

I watch it about once a year and it's a great Batman movie. [This video fully proves my argument.](https://youtu.be/ulOLYnOthIw?t=57)

Bruuuuuh that's messed up. If I'm being honest, I'd say that lego batman understands the character better than pretty much every live action adaptation other than The Batman. Anyway I vote for 89, it's well made, but its version of batman is pretty much character assassination.
