I figure a ārealisticā freeze gun would either consist of a liquid nitrogen thrower (a la a flamethrower) or - if you wanted to get crazy - a shotgun loaded with the liquid nitrogen equivalent of Dragonfire shells. I think the violent impact of a shotgun mixed with searing instantaneous freezing of skin and flesh would fit in quite well with how utterly brutal and grounded in reality The Batman seems to be, compared to previous representations of the characters. Would also fit in well with the repurposed GCPD gear heās got.
That is an incredible concept wow
Honestly the props and gear specifically arenāt really my area of expertise, I just do overall character design but you really know what you are doing. The gun was made in line with your first idea of the liquid nitrogen but the second idea is gold and does really fit with the GCPD aspects to his design. Really really good idea mate!
Obviously we're dealing with comics and fantasy here, but a liquid nitrogen thrower wouldn't do much damage at all unless someone was fully immersed for some time. If you just shot a stream of LN at someone, it would sublimate off for quite a while due to the Leidenfrost effect.
I wonder if there is some type of gelling agent or similarly adhesive material that retains its semi-solid properties when chilled to extremely low temperatures, but also be thermally conductive. It would be analogous to the sticky napalm in a real flamethrower. Sounds kind of horrifying actually lol.
[this stuff allegedly remains flexible at -80c](https://cen.acs.org/materials/polymers/Hydrogel-stays-strong-flexible-even/97/web/2019/06) so it's not too terribly much of a stretch to imagine a grounded but still supercooled viscous sticky hydrogel type thing. Apply some handwavium that it solidifies shortly after exposure to air when leaving the gun and whubam, you can glue people in place with sub zero instant concrete.
I like the idea of liquid nitrogen because instead of freezing in a block of ice, it'll freeze them to death and shatter their bodies. Quite disturbing.
Iāve actually worked with liquid nitrogen. It doesnāt freeze you but gives intense frostbite. And the idea that a Mr. Freeze that burns people to death is so cool!
When Batman meets him and finds out he had his wife frozen and it's looking for a cure he will never find, he tells him..."You can't live in the past... You have to... Let it go...Let it go"
I like the Hazmat suit repurposed into his suit idea. Definitely not a fan of the GCPD vest though. Way too āgroundedā. Iād rather he creates his own freeze resistant armor to reinforce the Hazmat suit instead of a normal kevlar vest
His expertise isnāt building armour; heās a scientist/cryogeneticist. I think itād make most sense if his hazmat suit (which is built and supplied by Waynetech Industries) was already insanely over engineered for protection, including armour (because the experiments are super dangerous?).
Present design only protects torso from bullets.
Also just because Riddlerās costume was gritty and slapped together doesnāt mean they *all* need to be. Would be more interesting if villains arrive at their circumstances from different pathways, including levels of funding and professional background.
Freeze hazmat suit also poses unique challenge for Batman: Waynetech Industries will have supplied everything necessary to construct both Freeze *and* Batman suits, so Batman could be matched or beaten by his own tech (I wonder if Freeze will have utility belt with tricky accessory gadgets?).
What youāve got does look good. Brrr!
Agreed, this is kind of a bland design. A scientist like freeze would have some interesting mods going on and if it's meant to create it's own freezing environment it should be more akin to a space suit than hazmat.
I love this, I imagine that the noise of the suit would sound something like one of those bouncy castles theyād have at birthday parties, hence the air filter and other equipment
Oh man I really do like it. But in my heart I only hope for something close to his classic design and story as they can get. A proper Freeze story finally, but I will say Arnold was super cool.
Ppl kept saying they wanted Mr. Freeze but I had no idea how they could make his goofy-ass outfit gritty enough for The Batman and you went ahead and did it
Itās like a body suit, the air can flow throughout the body from the mask portion. If I were to redo it Iād make some tubes possible connect from the back canisters to possibly his waist too.
I love this! Maybe add a grenade strap around his leg? Maybe like a strap that holds freeze grenades? I think that would look cool. Maybe make the freeze grenades repurposed smoke grenades that emit a coolant of some sort? Otherwise, this is so cool!
I personally love the design. Everything in "the Batman"'s universe is gritty and grounded, and this fits the bill super well. The concept is sound and the art itself is amazing.
Also, compliments to you too, OP. I was scrolling through the comment section and you take criticism and suggestions like an absolute champ, which is not an easy thing to do when you're putting your creation out there. So good on you for being a good artist and a good sport.
Thank you itās definitely what I was going for my friend.
Hey thanks man, I donāt mind the criticism, some people of different opinions and some have great suggestions either way we all like Batman, right? Thanks again!
Oh my god, I hope reeves gets off the "realism" bandwagon and goes full nuts and give a Mr Freeze just like in the comics and the arkham games. The universe of batman is so much more than just a bunch of serial killers with a gimmick.
Yeah we will see how it goes in the second movie but I can get behind that. There are way too many characters that need that space to be themselves and in a world thatās too grounded theyāll lose their charm.
losing their charm is an understatement. How do you make a "realistic" Mr Freeze even possible at all? Or Poison Ivy? Or Court of Owls for that matter? (the actors have been talking about the Court of owls story in one interview and how great it is and that's why I'm bringing them up as well)
You've done great work here for sure, very original and an interesting take. Clever to have him using a repurposed GCPD suit. And your art looks really well done too, top notch šš
Though I'm gonna be honest, I don't want him to be this realistic. I'm so tired of realistic Batman, the character is really not this grounded and I feel like he loses some of his magic when this happens. Like Ra's not having his defining trait in Begins, or Bane being shorter than Batman in TDKR. I feel like the Arkham games are the gold standard, practical but still comic book-esque.
Thank you very much!
I actually 100% agree, the Arkham games were the perfect balance between the comics and something terrifyingly real in my eyes. Id love it if we could get something to watch like that.
Iām going to make a more āfantasticallyā Mr. Freeze next so we will see how it goes
That fight in City was so well executed, would love to see something like that at some point.
But I'm so down to see your take on that, you're super talented!
That is awesome man.
I'd love to see a TV series with a more grounded approach to DC's villians, similar to your design. Don't get me wrong, I love the colourful and whacky designs. But I appreciate/like this style more, when it comes to live action.
Good work.
Thank you! I completely agree, itās exciting to see these characters with a more serious tone. Iād also love to see a show done in a grounded way too, good idea.
I made it with Procreate on a IPad, itās a bit tricky since I cant use as many layers without messing up the quality but it works well. And thank you!!
BIG fan of this. I love seeing ideas of how more fantastical villains like Mr Freeze could work in the grounded world of Reeves' Bat-verse. I don't have that level of creativity, so stuff like that really scratches that itch.
For sure! I saw a video speculating on how a fantastical villain like Clayface would work, and it was essentially just a return to his first appearance as a master of disguise - a la Spider-Man's Chameleon - rather than a shapeshifting monster. I don't find that very compelling, myself. If we're going to have more fantastical villains in this universe, I want them to be grounded but not *completely* neutered, you know?
Anyway, definitely think you found that right balance here. Well done.
Im with you on that, it would be way more interesting to have those fantastical elements rather than keeping everything too real, it takes away from the characters we love. Thanks again mate it means a lot!
I love this! Mr freeze is one of the tougher villains to make semi realistic, and I think this interpretation succeeds in spades! I've always figured he'd have some sort of hazmat suit. Maybe some smaller, realistic exo-skeleton outside of it, sort of like the brace in this image. Love it! Would love to see more.
The concept is unique & different but i just dont think freeze is a workable villain to the reality of the batman (or even nolanverse).
Im not a doctor but i cant think of any medical condition where the body needs to actually stay very cold to survive. If you're healthy or not, cold harms the human body.
Maybe making freeze Russian, Finnish, Norwegian, or maybe Inuit.. originally from somewhere near or above the arctic circle he's a criminal thats always preferred the cold. Mundane & boring, but translatable from the comics to the screen.
Yeah but then thatās no fun. We can have some fantastical elements, like Iām pretty sure Batman hitting a bridge while paragliding would kill him instantly you know. But I do see what you are saying, to ground it even further and have him just like the cold is a good concept.
These movies that try to change the characters so much to make them "realistic" really bother me. Why are you making a movie based on something that you dislike so much you need to change it. Or that you think is so embarrassing that you want to make it "realistic"? This is why the Nolan Batman hasn't aged well for me, it feels like a superhero movie made by someone who dislikes and is embarrassed by superhero movies.
I like to think of it as how he can see through the cloudy glass, it emits enough heat to clear it up you know. If not itād realistically be impossible to see through it. Also thank you!
Man, so cool. You have any more ideas for the Rouge Gallery? I always wondered what someone could come up with for some of the more āmagicalā villains like Clayface or Killer Croc.
Thanks! I was going to do one more of Mr. Freeze (a little more comic accurate) and then start on another character but idk who that would be yet.
I do really like those two though, the bigger characters sound fun to try so I might have to do it!
I loved this concept, it looks so good, though i have some conflicted feelings about the GCPD vest, it doesn't look bad, but i think if it was a darkish blue it would look a bit better
Nice art, I like this concept but it might be a little too far in the Nolan-realism direction. I think part of the appeal of Batman is where the noir elements are contrasted against pulp science. Batman is a gritty detective, but he is going up against something more garish and outlandish than himself.
Howās about instead of him freezing people, he murders them, then freezes them, then quarters them, and thatās his calling card. Like that one murderer from dexter
Yeah kinda, the idea is he still has his accident which hurts his leg and give him the subzero body. From there he puts together his suit to survive and realizing heāll need armour for his new schemes, kills a guard and uses his vest. Something quick, Iām not the writer you know š
I thought itād be cool if heād take it off a cop or something to use as makeshift protection as his suit was designed quickly without many resources.
I really like this and am hoping we get something similar for the film. Though I will say I think he could do without the leg brace. A regular, non-labeled bulletproof vest would also suffice. I have done some research into how the gun would actually function, and I am thinking you could do one of two things:
1) Liquid Helium. I know you wrote āLiquid Nitrogenā on the image, but liquid nitrogen actually isnāt that hazardous to touch (for short periods of time, anyway). It would take prolonged exposure for liquid nitrogen to actually freeze human skin. Liquid helium has a much more immediate effect and can cause frostbite almost immediately.
2) Laser Cooling. This is a much more likely explanation for how the gun manages to freeze people. Laser cooling is the process of slowing down the atoms of a substance with a laser beam, drastically reducing the substanceās temperature. In real-life, this process only works on several atoms at a time, though theoretically it could be made to work on larger targets (i.e. a human body)
Due to the realism and grittiness that the producers want to maintain throughout the films, if mr freeze were to be in the next one, this is the only concept I would be happy with. Great job!
That's quite good, but I really hope they don't go in this direction. I'm not into the overly realistic style they're using for this latest round of movies.
All they have to do is respect the source material. But Hollywood seems to think that things need to be either dark/gritty realism or ridiculous goofiness.
Honestly I love this! I loved the fact that the Police bullet proof vest is over his body and I also like how the freeze gun is modeld after the double barrel mosberg (idk) shot gun but I think having a massive thing of ice from the tip to halfway on the gun and I don't find the useage of the knee brace
The plot should be Hugo Strange doing his experiments on the mentally disabled inmates in Arkham Asylum. Cameo/Side Villains could be Man-Bat, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc.
But the main muscle is Freeze who is trying to take revenge on Strange for crossing him and not helping out his wife. Maybe in the end Batman helps him out and potentially help out the other villains.
I believe I'm somehow related to him. My brain stops working correctly above 30°C, and I'm completely useless above 36°C. Seriously, that did cost me jobs in the past. Several. Today I have my own business and just don't go there on hot days. My employees and our customers know me & I love them for their understanding. As long as I'm near any AC, I'm capable of making phone calls, at least.
I like it but I feel like it would fit the Dark Knight trilogy more.
The Batman, while being more realistic than the 80s and 90s movies, is still stylized much more than the Dark Knight films or even the DCEU films.
It depresses me that this is probably exactly what he would look like in the Reeves-verse. Just wish Reeves had the balls to go all out with Batman rather than tying a hand behind his back by being grounded.
This looks like a cool design, but I just cannot get myself fired up for "grounded" and "realistic" takes on Batman stuff anymore. I really enjoyed The Batman, but I need the fantasy to find its way back to Batman movies
I hope we eventually get a Batman that isn't 100% grounded in reality. How are we going to have characters like clay face or ras al ghul and his Lazarus pits if everything is so focused on making things 100% plausible.
Oh my God yeah, that would be terrifying
so cold napalm
[this stuff allegedly remains flexible at -80c](https://cen.acs.org/materials/polymers/Hydrogel-stays-strong-flexible-even/97/web/2019/06) so it's not too terribly much of a stretch to imagine a grounded but still supercooled viscous sticky hydrogel type thing. I like the idea of liquid nitrogen because instead of freezing in a block of ice, it'll freeze them to death and shatter their bodies. Quite disturbing.
Jason X has a kill like that, he freezes a girls face in liquid nitrogen and then smashes it on a table
One of 2 great moments in that terrible film forever burned in my memory from childhood
Don't talk bad on Jason X. It's one of the better entries save from II, IV and VI.
Haha i should be clear and say Iām a fan of even the worst Jason movies. The worst slashers are still a fun time
Please tell me the second one is the sleeping bag scene?
Of course it is. Iām a man of culture
Honestly its cinema at its finest, even without the nudity
Iāve actually worked with liquid nitrogen. It doesnāt freeze you but gives intense frostbite. And the idea that a Mr. Freeze that burns people to death is so cool!
Why, "or"? Why not *B O T H* ą²” Ķ Ź ą²”
Liquid nitrogen thrower with attached Masterkey?
I dig it. Maybe for dramatic effect, he could have the police patch scratched out or something.
Thats a good idea, itād make it feel even more spontaneously put together
Perhaps even just crossed out with an icy blue colored spray paint or something?
Yeah I like that too exactly
Or just have the "POL" part falling off. So you're left with "ICE"
Okay that's way better than my idea
Bane would be terrified
Maybe have "Frozen" written on it like Leto Joker's "Damaged". /s
When Batman meets him and finds out he had his wife frozen and it's looking for a cure he will never find, he tells him..."You can't live in the past... You have to... Let it go...Let it go"
If you are interested in seeing the process Iāve got a yt channel in my links
I'm on old reddit, could you post the link here?
No problem at all, enjoy! [Mr. Freeze Concept Video](https://youtu.be/0mBxMJPs7Uo)
Bruh is that the dude from Kingsman?
Yeah Mark Strong lol
Ooh I really dig the red goggles and the blue color of the hazmat suit
Thank you!
This looks like something the SWAT would wear if thing were to go nuclear in Gotham.
Yes, I went with a extreme conditions hazmat suit. Something he would put together himself and topped with a stolen police vest.
I like the Hazmat suit repurposed into his suit idea. Definitely not a fan of the GCPD vest though. Way too āgroundedā. Iād rather he creates his own freeze resistant armor to reinforce the Hazmat suit instead of a normal kevlar vest
Yeah fair enough, I can see what you mean and his own armour could definitely work nicely, good plan man
His expertise isnāt building armour; heās a scientist/cryogeneticist. I think itād make most sense if his hazmat suit (which is built and supplied by Waynetech Industries) was already insanely over engineered for protection, including armour (because the experiments are super dangerous?). Present design only protects torso from bullets.
Hmm thatās also good. Next design will be more comic accurate.
Also just because Riddlerās costume was gritty and slapped together doesnāt mean they *all* need to be. Oh I like the space suit idea.
That looks like Giancarlo underneath the mask....
Actually at the time I made this Mark Strong was the top choice for Freeze and the design is of his face but you can put whoever you want in there
Either 1 of them would be brilliant tbh.
Mark strong could probably play every comic book supervillain lol
I love this, I imagine that the noise of the suit would sound something like one of those bouncy castles theyād have at birthday parties, hence the air filter and other equipment
Oh yeah thatād be cool, I can imagine theyād make some pretty eerie scenes with something like that and thank you!
Damn, someone get Matt Reeves on the phone!
Yes, hit me up Mr. Reeves!
Oh man I really do like it. But in my heart I only hope for something close to his classic design and story as they can get. A proper Freeze story finally, but I will say Arnold was super cool.
Thanks and I agree, Iām making a more comic accurate suit next too so hopefully that works out well.
You know though I kinda think this would've worked better than Freezs's suit in Gotham. Has a better look.
Ppl kept saying they wanted Mr. Freeze but I had no idea how they could make his goofy-ass outfit gritty enough for The Batman and you went ahead and did it
Ay thanks man, I appreciate it greatly
Yeah, I heard someone mention ice dragonās-breath rounds in a shot gun and that would be dope
How does this keep his body at freezing temperatures? The mask covers his face but how does the rest of his body survive?
Itās like a body suit, the air can flow throughout the body from the mask portion. If I were to redo it Iād make some tubes possible connect from the back canisters to possibly his waist too.
I love this! Maybe add a grenade strap around his leg? Maybe like a strap that holds freeze grenades? I think that would look cool. Maybe make the freeze grenades repurposed smoke grenades that emit a coolant of some sort? Otherwise, this is so cool!
Ooo yeah that sounds good, Iām writing that down good idea mate. And thanks!
Of course! Great work! Keep it up
This is why I love Reddit. Brilliant work! Edit for spelling.
Thanks!!
Looks really cool. Though i don't think he would have his weak spot exposed on his chest.
Always room for a suit upgrade š¤·āāļø fair point though and thanks
I personally love the design. Everything in "the Batman"'s universe is gritty and grounded, and this fits the bill super well. The concept is sound and the art itself is amazing. āThe universe of batman is so much more than just a bunch of serial killers with a gimmick.ā Exactly

Good good

The Police uniform made me think of Lockup actually But otherwise, it definitely fits.
Coolā¦Iām guessing this is the first or second suit.
This is awesome OP nice work!
are they planing on changing his origin story? I kind of like the "creating havoc to save his wife" story line. It give him some humanity.
Bro this looks sick. Can you do HUSH next please?
Thanks! Thatās a good idea, I should try it
HVAC man
Very cool man, i loved it
Love the addition of the GCPD vest
This is so dope. Good work.
Thank you
Pretty nice, would be cool as a suit in Arkham World
If Freeze ended up working for a steady pay with the cops, could you imagine that?
Dude you have great talent. This is awesome
This looks amazing
I really like it
This actually is so fire
He aināt gonna be seeing too well
Howās about instead of him freezing people, he murders them, then freezes them, then quarters them, and thatās his calling card. Like that one murderer from dexter
Why does he have to be hyper realistic? Reeves universe is less grounded than Nolanās
He looks kind of like the Helghast police officers from Killzone Mercenary. I like it!
Definitely see him in the same universe as the batman pretty sweet
Perfect, thank you!
Got any back story to go with the suit?
Yeah kinda, the idea is he still has his accident which hurts his leg and give him the subzero body. From there he puts together his suit to survive and realizing heāll need armour for his new schemes, kills a guard and uses his vest. Something quick, Iām not the writer you know š
The GCPD vest is too low on the torso. It should be a bit higher up to protect more of the vital organs.
Dude, he totally needs to be a member of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Seeing that big "ICE" on his back would be the *ice-ing* on the cake.
If thereās a godā¦
Why is he wearing a police vest?
I thought itād be cool if heād take it off a cop or something to use as makeshift protection as his suit was designed quickly without many resources.
I really like this and am hoping we get something similar for the film. Though I will say I think he could do without the leg brace. A regular, non-labeled bulletproof vest would also suffice. This is so cool. Well done OP
This looks dope
I dig it, I donāt think he can see outta that but I love the design
This is really cool. I often have a hard time trying to think of how Mr. Freeze could be realistic and this answers that pretty well.
Thank you, Iām glad you like it.
Due to the realism and grittiness that the producers want to maintain throughout the films, if mr freeze were to be in the next one, this is the only concept I would be happy with. Great job!
Wow! Thank you!
No worries, would love to see some concepts of urs for other characters.
I definitely have some others in mind which Iām excited to start, thanks again.
This is great - very gritty and dystopian and not silly
Thank you, I tried my best
Ooooh! Me like~!
I would imagine the inside of his helmet be blue like if it was freezing no?
Yeah but the goggles give off some heat to clear the glass a tiny bit, not enough to warm the suit. At least thatās how I intended it haha
I love it
That's quite good, but I really hope they don't go in this direction. I'm not into the overly realistic style they're using for this latest round of movies. All they have to do is respect the source material. But Hollywood seems to think that things need to be either dark/gritty realism or ridiculous goofiness.
Please do Anarchy!
Couple spelling errors in there OP. The most notable is decive instead of device in the breathing apparatus description.
This is a really good concept
Honestly I love this! I loved the fact that the Police bullet proof vest is over his body and I also like how the freeze gun is modeld after the double barrel mosberg (idk) shot gun but I think having a massive thing of ice from the tip to halfway on the gun and I don't find the useage of the knee brace
Thanks! Yeah I see what you mean, always room for improvements but Iām glad you like it.
No problem
Maybe have him remove the first 3 letters via scratching it or covering it so it just says ice
Does his knee brace allow him to kick through solid concrete like Bales? š¤
I mean I just made it to help with an injury because I thought itād be interesting but it could if youād like š¤·āāļøš
Me thinks it should kick through solid concrete š¤
Then it shall
I think it just looks cool
Schway! What's the story behind him being part of the GCPD?
The plot should be Hugo Strange doing his experiments on the mentally disabled inmates in Arkham Asylum. Cameo/Side Villains could be Man-Bat, Clayface, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc. But the main muscle is Freeze who is trying to take revenge on Strange for crossing him and not helping out his wife. Maybe in the end Batman helps him out and potentially help out the other villains.
Could he remove the police symbol. Just looks a bit jarring on him sorry
Yeah, it definitely could be removed, some donāt like it either and I get it.
I do like how you took risks and didn't take him too grounded tho. He's still got the cold containment suit, still got some form of cryo gun\~
Thank you!
This is bad enough that Reeves might use it
I believe I'm somehow related to him.
Love it
Much appreciated man
this looks fucking sick , i love it
Thank you!
I like it but I feel like it would fit the Dark Knight trilogy more. The Batman, while being more realistic than the 80s and 90s movies, is still stylized much more than the Dark Knight films or even the DCEU films.
I see what you are saying and thanks for the take, Im writing it down.
It depresses me that this is probably exactly what he would look like in the Reeves-verse. Just wish Reeves had the balls to go all out with Batman rather than tying a hand behind his back by being grounded.
I feel that but the next concept I do will be more comic accurate, no worries
No shade on your concept though. I think you made something in line with Paul Danoās Riddler.
Youāre good mate and thank you, its what I was going for
Pretty awesome tbh
Thank you
Dude this is so sick, great idea
Thanks!
This looks like a cool design, but I just cannot get myself fired up for "grounded" and "realistic" takes on Batman stuff anymore. I really enjoyed The Batman, but I need the fantasy to find its way back to Batman movies
Thank you and I agree. My next concept will be more comic accurate so hopefully itāll turn out well.
I mean for freeze we have a pretty grounded story , the most out there thing is the fact he has to live in subzero tempatures
Too grounded in reality for my liking. Would like an mechanical exoskeleton over hazmat suit.
I hope we eventually get a Batman that isn't 100% grounded in reality. How are we going to have characters like clay face or ras al ghul and his Lazarus pits if everything is so focused on making things 100% plausible.
Looks Kinda Sus.
