If I'm reading [this study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6822199/) correctly, 80% chance of returning to baseball in roughly a year. Gut-wrenching.

SirMctrolington

Right before his free agency now, too. In 2024 he is going to be a 31 year old player with an .850 career OPS who is forced to sign a prove it deal. That is fucked.

[deleted]

And that's unfortunately best case scenario, where he's not in that 20%. Couldn't feel worse for the guy.

akaghi

The real kick in the nuts is going to be not knowing what his 2024 expectations will be too. Acuña came back, but was clearly not himself, so will a team who signs him also go in with the assumption that maybe they're getting him at 75-80%? Super rough spot for him, and it blows.

moscowrules

This feels like a gamble the Giants would jump on. He’s a local kid, too. SF isn’t the best place to rebuild offensive value, but it would basically be what they’re now doing with Conforto. Our FO seems keen on signing players from the area.

skunkpunk1

You’re right. That would be a completely on brand deal for the Giants who would keep him on the short side of a platoon

moscowrules

I don’t think Rhys would take the deal without an understanding that he’d be playing every day. His career splits aren’t bad anyway, though he’s clearly better against LHP.

skunkpunk1

I agree. It’s just something I can see the Giants trying to pull off. He’ll be on a prove it deal next year though so definitely would want somewhere where he’s the main 1B

moscowrules

Yup, and we don’t have any promising 1B prospects as far as I can tell, so I’d think he’d get that deal here. He seems like a good guy, too. Hard not to feel really bad for him.

DaTigerMan

i don’t even really like the giants, but this would be one of the few deals that i would be slightly happy with if he left philly. local kid is always a great story.

AntifaHelpDesk

Fuck. Hate that for him so much.

brandon_the_bald

Sucks for Rhys man. Great guy and he’s in his FA year

esperadok

Hoskbros: it's so over :(

drrdf

He was looking locked in this spring training too..

Sbarrro

Dumb question: In the past (before modern medicine) if someone tore their ACL or any ligament, would that be it for them? Do these heal on their own?

aweinschenker

Mickey Mantle tore his in his rookie year and just kinda dealt with it.

Blue387

Didn't he trip on an outfield drain cover at Yankee Stadium?

throwaway19472844

Yes, it was the top of 5th inning in game 2 of the world series against the New York Giants. Willie Mays hit a ball in the right-center gap. Mantle hustled for the ball and got called off by Joltin’ Joe at the last moment. Mantle stopped on a dime at the exact spot of the drain cover, tearing everything in his knee.

thetwigman21

This could all be a lie but I’m gonna believe you because it almost sounds like you were there

Rarecandy31

I’m friends with throwaway19472844. Can confirm, he was there.

aweinschenker

I believe so, yeah

throwaway19472844

And still had an inner circle HOF career. Best natural talent in baseball history along with Willie Mays.

jimithelizardking

Amphetamines are no joke

FoodBetter2572

AS REAL MEN DID. NONE OF THIS PANSY ASS, DICK TUGGING SURGERY SHIT. YOU BUST YOUR KNEE TO THE POINT OF BEING UNUSEABLE AND YOU STILL BECOME A TOP 5 PLAYER EVER! (/j, for people who really need it.)

drrdf

It will eventually ‘heal’ on its own, but it won’t heal in the way you’d want it to heal (in others words, it would probably heal poorly, and you’d probably not be able to comfortably play baseball again).

SirMctrolington

There are a lot of people walking around today with torn ACLs and Achilles even. For the average person it very rarely becomes an issue. If you are more active you would definitely notice it, but unless you are running and cutting it wouldn't be much of a problem.

BoxesFullOfLemons

Pain.

Fuuuuccckkk

that stinks man.

Kevin69138

What happened?

Kevin69138

What in the world, that looked so routine. Man that is a freak injury

ray_0586

Might be an unfortunate result of the new shift rules. Last year Hoskins would not be positioned for fielding a ball against a left handed hitter; the 2nd baseman would have been set in the outfield grass and responsible for fielding that ball.

manav_steel

Did you seriously just blame a freak injury on the shift rules lmao. And Acuña tore his ACL because of outfield positioning, of course.

ray_0586

I meant it more as a butterfly effect kind of thing, but I can see how it can be interpreted as assigning blame.

nashdiesel

Yes totally Manfred’s fault. Apparently.

Waterfish3333

It’s really more to do with the larger bases. Larger bases mean more balls will ricochet off them, so players are more prone to stopping suddenly. /s just in case.

jonginator

Awkward movement trying to field a ground ball.

Insectshelf3

god damnit

jorleeduf

I hate everything

BlakaneezGuy

Giants will sign him to $18m over 2 years with an opt out after 1, sit him for the first 60 days, then proceed to maximize his output and ride him to a World Series title.

akaghi

This seems unlikely. Isn't an ACL a year long recovery?
