Plutodrinker

Do they instinctively defend themselves with venom at that age?

Rhediix

The venom of hatchlings is as potent as that of adult King Cobras. In other words: Steer clear of the baby snek in what looks to be a defense pose right after it's born. 😬

superRedditer

man they just come out ready for go time. like the opposite of humans

aisutron

Human venom develops in the teen years when people are toxic af.

Tekkzy

Similar to how poison dart frogs are only poisonous due to their diet, teenagers gain their toxicity after playing League of Legends.

aisutron

Don’t forget the regular old internet.

demi-femi

Halo 2 and Xbox Live.

bigbear75

Apparently my mother was a popular lady back in the day.

DecisionConscious198

Still is, I saw her last night. OHHHHH!!! ^Sorry...

_Wyrm_

*Back in the day* he says 😂

Moonlands

You forgot MW2 lobbies.

AlwaysNowNeverNotMe

It was really more of a competitive slur lobby that occasionally played call of duty.

Captobvious75

Its coming back too this year. Can’t wait for the “I fucked your mom” crew to come back.

withloveuhoh

Even before the internet kids were still toxic af. Don't forget about regular old person to person communication

TonyThePuppyFromB

🎵The toxicity of our city, our city 🎵

Vio94

It's more of a psychic based venom rather than a liquid based one. Still pretty potent.

aisutron

Seems solid

viciousevilbunny

I've noticed in my house it starts to come in at 11, I can only imagine how spicy 13 will be.

I_LOVE_PUPPERS

I used to deliver parcels to a local school and there is nothing more potent or cutting than a gaggle of young girls. Whatever insecurity you have, however deeply buried it is, they cut right to it instantly. Hey monkey boy, nice ears. Scarred to this day

HeckingA

"look at that high waisted man, he's got feminine hips!"

MetalAlbatross

That's the thing I'm sensitive about!

Astrium6

>Many adult humans will abandon their young in desolate locations during their teen years as they are a danger to everyone around them Is that why they’re so commonly found in malls?

Honda_TypeR

I thought human venom toxicity doesn’t become potent until it makes their first Fortnite account?

IamSpongeWorthy

This may be the best reddit comment ever...period

triablos1

I'm curious what animals have it worse off than humans as far as how long it takes for an offspring to become self-sufficient. Anyone got any interesting thoughts on this topic?

Blobbyblob92

Imagine if today women were on all four and men walked around upright. What a fucked up image my mind is creating.

Mocker-Poker

get out!

remiscott82

As long as everyone has a cute butt.

100BottlesOfMilk

Humans are basically born premature (relative to other mammals) because we wouldn't fit otherwise

MonkeyAss12393

Man my mom would have been destroyed if she had to carry me until 28 when I was finally ready to be contributing part of society

SuspiciouslyElven

This conveniently gives us more time to develop learned behaviors.

KakkaKarrot

It inconveniently means we die if left alone

gaurwraith

Not if there's a she-wolf around, or Bagheera.

bwaredapenguin

Most humans die alone anyway.

godblow

In the book Sapiens, iirc it says that because we walk erect, our hips became narrower, which requires babies to be born technically premature. Normally, we'd have to be around 2 years old to be somewhat self sufficient like other mammals.

Daddysu

It's not just the fitting thing. There used to be a theory that was disproved that said that if women's hips got wider to support birth of bigger baby heads it would make upright bipedal walking too inefficient. The bigger issue is that a woman's body can't sustain a baby's nutritional needs much longer than that. Edit to add link since I posted a link in another reply on a comment of a person getting downvoted for saying the hip thing is untrue. Solving the obstetrical dilemma: Study shows wide hips do not mean less efficient locomotion https://phys.org/news/2015-03-obstetrical-dilemma-wide-hips-efficient.html

Nvenom8

Humans have a higher degree of neoteny than pretty much anything else. So, we're pretty much the worst. Marsupials are worse, but their pouch time can almost be thought of as an extended gestation. Humans are probably the most K-selected species on Earth with no exceptions.

NeonAlastor

K-selected ?

Nvenom8

Quality of offspring over quantity. Heavy investment in a few offspring over light investment in many offspring.

Unique-Ad-620

Seals are pretty helpless till they learn to swim. Cute as hell though.

alphaferretcat

Rats and kittens are helpless for a few weeks without moms too

Unique-Ad-620

Yea thats right. Baby birds is another one.

LostSoulsAlliance

I always remember that nature video of the lizards hatching on the beach, and they are SURROUNDED by spawn-camping snakes just waiting for them to hatch. As *soon* as they pop out of the egg, they are *sprinting* toward safety for dear life. It's like how do they know what they have to do so fast and can do it?

CazRaX

Instincts are a hell of a drug.

KingDanIV

It’s just natural instinct. Same as how sea turtles know to go towards the ocean when they hatch. Also, not all of them will have their instinct kick in immediately and those ones get eaten

9ofdiamonds

David Attenboroughs Planet Earth 2: Islands is what you're looking for.

nicksabanisahobbit

>The venom of hatchlings is as potent as that of adult King Cobras. Riki Tiki knew that all too well.

joeyGibson

I have such fond memories of watching Riki Tiki Tavi every year when it came on TV back in the 70s.

royalsocialist

TV? Didn't even know it was televised lol but of course it was

joeyGibson

Yep. Once a year, I think sometime in the fall.

JessumB

Lady: "Aww, look at the cute baby snake!" Baby snake: "I will end your existence!"

jchinique

“Once I figure out how to sit up straight…”

user_bits

Are their fangs developed enough to bite through skin?

agieluma

Fuck around and find out

saturnpretzel

Then how come the person holding the snake didn’t wear a glove or other protective gear? It seems dangerous.

The_Grubby_One

Because people are often fucking stupid. Also, she's Russian. 6 times out of 10, if you see someone online being stupid with animals, they're Russian.

LeaveTheMatrix

Of the remaining 4, 2 out of 10 times someone doing something stupid it will be a tank turret flying into the air and also be a Russian.

spankybacon

I thought it was more deadly to be bit by the small ones because they don't have venom control and just inject everything they have.

Key_Environment8179

I was told this, too, but upon research, it’s just an urban legend. https://www.livescience.com/50583-snake-facts.html

Penguinunhinged

Regardless of whether it's true or not, the venom in a baby cobra still works like the adult's does, so avoiding getting bit is still priority #1 as far as I'm concerned.

Lipziger

Priority number 1 is to pet the cute snek, everything else comes later. PS. I might not always make the best decisions but I'm quite confident with this one.

spankybacon

See. you the human! This is how we prove people wrong with style.

Omieye

Just like daddy long legs being deadly to humans. Just found out everything about them that I was told all my life was a complete myth lol

Key_Environment8179

I swear, there are some things we believe that some random kid just made up at recess at school one day that just somehow spread to every kid in America.

bigkeys11

I have desperately wanted some kind of deep dive documentary into how some of these rumors that are completely made up end up spreading to the point where they become ubiquitous with kids of a certain age. The daddy long legs one is a great example. The one I always say is the rumor which you may have heard depending on when you were in grade/high school about Ciara that everyone from the area knew about regardless of what school they went to or who they hung out with

Random_Sime

Tom Scott did a video on variations of lines that follow "Jingle Bells, Batman Smells..." that kind of dives into those ideas https://youtu.be/V5u9JSnAAU4 I think there's a few videos on the origins of The S that looks like a braided rope that everyone learns to draw in school.

jchinique

Me too! And not just urban legends like Mikey and the pop-rocks, but things like songs and rhyme games that vary regionally. I think kids were always the conduit for memes.

UmpireMysteriou

This person is being grossly irresponsible and could die at any second if the baby gets

grilledcakes

This sentence could also describe my life.

mybrainisfull

Jiggy with it?

Forevernevermore

Nothing to do with control but the result of babies being more likely to bite instead of fleeing. Baby snakes lack the full threatening displays of adults so are more likely to be preyed upon, resulting in a higher frequency of bites, which makes for a statistic that, out of context, implies baby snakes are deadlier.

Cyrus_ofAstroya

Danger noodle

redfan29

Does it think “mommy” if it sees you?

xenthum

Snakes don't raise their young (with a tiny few exceptions). They lay eggs and protect them but will have fucked off by hatching time. There is no mommy reaction in snakes.

garrettj100

Not only are they venomous when freshly hatched, but they're also more skittish and aggressive. What we're seeing in this video is incredibly stupid.

Kingsnake661

that's my take too. IIRC, when a buddy hatched a clutch of corn snake eggs, they would bite you when you tried to pick them up... couldn't do much, but he sure could...

AlreadyTakenNow

Baby snakes are often quite defensive out of the egg—even nonvenomous ones. I had baby corn snakes who I would hold in one hand, and they would defensively strike at my other hand. It was hilarious as their teeth were not big enough to break skin, but still pretty...striking. They'd sound like tiny angry air compressors!

SimoneNonvelodico

IMO still beaten by the guy who took a picture holding a Blue Ringed Octopus. I think it's easier to survive cobra venom.

MalsPrettyBonnet

Yes, this is incredibly unsafe, irresponsible behavior.

heuristic-dish

Honestly, what are the growths visible there? Pieces of egg shell?

Cypheri

The little white bits? It's perlite, which is the substrate commonly used for maintaining correct humidity while incubating snake eggs.

Angry_Walnut

Gotta love the internet, ask an obscure question and get that sweet snake science within the hour

royalsocialist

Also used to grow shrooms

satansanus

Was expecting that little bugger to immediately sink its fangs into the holders thumb-pad.

Hour-Stable2050

Me too. It came out ready for a fight!

BTrippd

I’m pretty sure it’s trying to figure out how to balance and stay upright, not moving in a threatening manner.

punch_you

Can it be both?

kineticstar

Still danger noodle confirmed! ![gif](giphy|YOkx9SqJ7krgqrEQG1|downsized)

KrishnaChick

Does it think the person holding it is its mama? Like, imprinted? Do snakes do that?

dragdritt

Snakes don't have "mamas"

only_crank

what about papas

dragdritt

They go to buy a pack of cigarettes immediately after conception.

Sam_Wylde

Fun fact: despite being called a King Cobra, most snakes are actually self governing and do not recognize their authority.

sohumsahm

Oh, so King Charles cobra then.

PM_ME_PSN_CODES-PLS

The King Charles Cavalier Cobra...of course it is... I can tell !

DoctorGlorious

sciguy52

And contrary to popular belief, Copperhead snakes heads are not made of copper.

PlaySonSwords

Fun fact: "king" before a snake's name indicates that it eats other snakes of that kind, i.e. king cobras eat other cobras

supershinythings

Like the California King Snake, which is itself non-venomous but eats venomous snakes!

Tristanhx

So King Kong eats other kong? And King Richard...

Ok this is really cute 10/10 But I'm pretty sure that there were at least 5 Wild Kratts episodes explaining how this was a horrible idea

I’m so old I had to look up what Wild Kratts was. I was a Kratts Creatures and Zaboomafoo guy

Haploid-life

I'm so old that my kids were watching Zaboomafoo. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|no_mouth)

I mean, you can't be *that* old. First episode of Kratts Creatures was in '96 and first episode of Zaboomafoo was' 99. Stop trying to age me!

Dantexr

Why does nature make this smol killing machine so cute?

MepShadow_1215

Not sure if you're serious or not, but if you are and you've never had the pleasure, look up "TF2 Medic explains Cuteness" - it's a little comic (dubbed version on YouTube called 'Cuteness' by The Beard) that explains neoteny and it's effect both on the individual brain and on society as a whole. Yeah it's a jokey comic, but it explains the idea extremely well!

irving47

unexpected TF2... getting more and more rare these days, sadly.

aliceis1337

I miss them so much

GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD

Game is still the 6th most played title on Steam; I don't understand why Valve continues to ignore it.

GreenJesus4President

Because why fuck with the 6th most played title on your platform when it holds that record YEARS after any serious attention? Lol if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, I’d say there is a plausible argument that many multiplayer games these days suffer from overdevelopment (see fortnite, they just kept throwing patches at it until people stopped playing)

Dantexr

Thanks, I will take a look

tamihsra

Years ago I was researching why my dog was so stupidly adorable no matter what she did. Turns out it's an evolution thing that mammals and hatchlings are "cute" in human context to condition us human instincts to protect the young. Like, a survival/ evolution thing.

Nawnp

All baby animals have their proportions to make their faces look cuter. It probably has to do with attaching motherly instincts.

CazRaX

But snakes don't raise their kids (aside from a couple of discord), they lay eggs, protect nest for a bit but are gone by the time they hatch.

Pangolin007

If anything it’s probably the other way around, that we evolved to find features common to babies cute to encourage us to care for our offspring, rather than us evolving to have cute offspring and babies of other animals evolving to look cute.

mercfan3

If not friend, why look like friend?

Sadie-E-Adler

10/10 cute but also 10/10 nope.

twinklepinkytoe22

Let a baby cobra hatch in your hand, watch it wobble back and forth like a drunk rubber band. Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to dieeeee.

tubbis9001

This person is being grossly irresponsible and could die at any second if the baby gets spooked and bites

BishopGodDamnYou

Aren’t they still lethally venomous as babies?

xyloplax

No, I've eaten 4 today and they are not poisonous.

c4pt41n_0bv10u5

You stressed the fuck out of the little guy as soon as its hatched.

BuckyDuster

Are they not highly venomous at birth? Why would you want to hold such a thing in your hand? I don’t wish it any harm but I’m not keen on being bitten by a keenly venomous baby snake either.

StableCoinScam

Ready_Homework7020

Newly hatched nightmare

MsMyska

The nightmare is more the baby snake’s— can you imagine being faced with a huge predator and having to defend yourself from being eaten immediately out of the womb? Little dude got a harsh welcome, but he’s new on the job and trying his best.

autolockon

Isn’t this stressing out the poor thing right after being born basically?

mcaDiscoVision

Yes, it's dangerous for the person and stressful for the snake. This is an irresponsible breeder who should probably not be allowed to do so.

DrCheezburger

It's already stressed out from popping out and then realizing it's a snake instead of a cute puppy or kitten. "Oh why oh why couldn't I have been a cute furry little critter this time instead of this scaly fright bomb, which, let's face it, is what I am?"

BigNorseWolf

What you are is adorable \*smooches\*
