Hope we are not too late
By - uizal
That cat is having an adventure
Cat: Human, carry me and I will show you the world.
“I have Google ma-“
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me princess, now when did you last let your cat decide
A whole new purr...
I will now close my eyes
Exactly the lyrics I was thinking lol
Cat’s got its human on autopilot.
The cat’s on autopilot
Cat: I think I am quite ready for another adventure!
Also cat: A feline is never late, hooman! Nor are they early, they arrive precisely when they mean to!
Have you Met Gary The Adventure Cat? Y’all should go on adventures together!
We are big fans of Gary! If we visit Canada, we will ask him to show us around.
Oh ya totally
I was going with mini-cougar
This is so cute holy shit
Is it an Abyssinian? The ones I have known have been the most delightful, self-confident adventurous cats I’ve ever known
Yes, Mungo is an Aby!
Mungo like candy!
Candygram for Mungo. Candygram for Mungo.
I need Mungo in my life
I love this!
I've had a couple and they are *way* too smart for their own good. Had to get door knobs instead of handles because one of them learned to open the door. That particular one I had for something like 15 years, and he acted like a kitten the entire time. I miss that little bastard.
My cat opens doors too! He also thinks the bathtub is a big shiny clean litter box just for him so I have to keep the door locked because he can work the handle.
I can only imagine.
OP how did you get your cat to feel comfortable going on walks with you? Mine just get super nervous and squirmy when I'm with them outside
First we took him out in the garden for short amounts of time and when he was not feeling it we took him inside. He can’t take it for a very long time still, i think it’s too stimulating for him. We try to keep the walks shorter than 90 min.
Whenever we take our dumb cat outside he just eats grass until he throws up. He has IBD, so apparently he's trying to settle his stomach or something.
Oh I have one of these too. He always decides to throw the grass back up in the living room. Good times!
They never learn either
Stepping in a pool of warm cat vomit in your stocking feet is one of life's little pleasures.
Especially if it's in the middle of the night as you stumble to the bathroom! Good times!
My cat does this too haha
I will use this advice for my daughter
Not OP, but if it's like training cats to do anything else, the answer is "start as a kitten"
Yeah I started at like 6 months. Probably missed the window
I think it’s also personality.
We started training our two rescue brothers to use the backpack and go on walks from the day they were immunized. One will go everywhere with me, never makes a peep, very curious, never afraid. The other acts mostly “comfortable” while doing it, but cries the entire time. Still can’t figure out if he’s just yelling for the sake of it, but it freaks people and dogs out so he doesn’t go as often.
the way you've phrased that makes it sound like you've got one polite cat, while the other.. just heckles the passers-by.
'hah, look at you, the stupid mutt with the stupid heart face!"
I started just letting mine out on the front porch, she hated her leash at first and would just flop on the ground first couple times. Eventually, she got curious and started walking around the flower garden. Then once day she moved into the back yard. Eventually, onto the street. Now she’s climbing trees like a damn squirrel.
I think what helped is knowing how to make your cat feel comfortable in the situation. I would crouch down and call for my girl whenever she looked a little bugged out or overwhelmed, and she would come bounding towards me like the cutest little thing because she knows it’s safe around me.
What’s great is that now I can toss her in my backpack and we go on hourlong hikes at the reservation near my home. She still hates her harness, but now knows that means it’s adventure time!
It also depends heavily on the type of cat and personality. Certain breeds of cat have the natural disposition to be less independent, more doglike and go on walks with you.
OP’s cat is an Abyssinian which is basically no1 dogcat breed that naturally wants to go on walks. So it’s misleading to take their advice as applying to all cats - it definitely doesn’t!!
If your cat is a moggie then it’s going to come down to personality. If it’s an adult cat and afraid of the outdoors and doesn’t enjoy then it’s probably not going to happen, if starting small doesn’t help then don’t push it. With moggies you need to start when they are super young and even then some just won’t have the disposition for it even with gradual exposure.
Sweet sweet schnoodle, the poems are as cute as the damn picture!
Lmao before I even checked the comments, I looked at the photo and said “this is so fucking cute it’s making me sick.”
Seems we had the same general reaction lol
This is just Pokemon IRL, we just need Team Rocket to show up
I made once a photo collage of my bf and Mungo on his shoulder vs. Ash and Pikachu and it was impossible to tell the difference.
I want to be the very best
Like no one ever was
Dun dun du-dun
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my *cauuuuuse*
I think we need to see this picture...you know, for science.
Science here, can confirm. Picture is indeed necessary
What a beauty... Is he/she an Abyssinian?
Yes, Mungo is an Aby cat.
I'm so envious... I wish my pesky mogs would do this! How often does he/she try to jump off / run away?
Run away - i don‘t think he ever tried it. But he will jump between my shoulders and the shoulders of my bf quite often, every 10-15 min.
Cute! With or without claws!? 😻
It depends on the amount of snacks he got that day!
Haha! Well you make a fine human horse for him 😄. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
We have one too. Even for a cat, he is pretty weird. We joke that he is actually an alien in cat form.
They are the best!
Check out OP's profile. Tons of pics of Mungo
Of course you are late. The cat is driving with eyes closed.
The cat looks like the dancing cat meme.
Plot twist: cat is playing GTA and is looking for a new car to ride
Abyssin-ya hiking with your pal, love it!
I love how you have that backpack for the cat, and the cat is like "Nah.. I'll chill up here thanks."
Haha, love it!
Is this pans final form? He chose well
I hope shoulder cats never go out of style
I feel like this picture needs to be captioned with "ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE!"
How did u train ur cat to stay still
I don’t remember doing something specific, he is a chill cat. He kind of sees our shoulders as a safe place, even at the vet he jumps right on them as soon as he sees the syringe.
Such a cutie! What backpack is that? It looks nice and a lot of space!
I got it on Amazon, the brand is Pecute. It also has an expandable part on the side that touches my back, kind of like a mesh tunnel.
I've been wondering about those kind of bags vs the usual carrier and would love some insights from people who would have used both and what they/their cats think about them.
My boy isn't that heavy but carrying the carrier sucks and that seems to be a good option, maybe by having it on my front instead of back to be able to reassure the cat?
Never too late for, "shoulder cat!"
I dont get the title
I think it’s because yesterday there were loads of posts of cats on shoulders so maybe she meant she didn’t want to miss the daily trend
Oh is it? I imagined the title was trying to convey some story about these two being plucky earth saving adventurers and hoping they weren't too late to prevent deforestation
Huh. Had the exact same thought here loool.
I also like this version...
It's still bloody going though. Just go to r/aww and sort by new. they might as well rename the sub r/animalsonshoulders
r/shouldercats exists btw
are you implying that animals on shoulders are not *also* aww-worthy?
Not implying anything about who you're responding to, but some people get all uppity with fun stuff
I mean, I get it. In my ideal world, /r/aww isn't a standalone sub, it's just a collection of all the other smaller, more dedicated subs (like /r/cats, /r/dogs, etc.). and then /r/cats is just a collection of /r/shouldercats, /r/catsstandingup, etc. (/r/catsubs for all of them)
maintaining the hierarchical structure while restricting submissions to the top levels would encourage more dedicated-topic participation.
but that wasn't how reddit was created, and reddit *still* (grr) doesn't have a mechanism to keep the same posts from showing up multiple times in one person's newsfeeds (even when it's crossposted)
Me either, too late for what?
Too late to enjoy the forest because it's all being cut down!
Idk, that's just how I interpreted it before reading that there was a cat on shoulder photo trend happening.
>Too late to enjoy the forest because it's all being cut down!
>Idk, that's just how I interpreted it before reading that there was a cat on shoulder photo trend happening.
This was my take as well.
Too late to get a Christmas tree
On the contrary, you’re right on time
A cat is never late. Nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to.
When it kneads* to. :D
Nice one lol
Whoa that’s a glorious shoulder cat!
Eyes closed, feelin the breeze.... that cat is blissed out haha
That kitty looks like the cats the Egyptians drew.
It's an Abyssinian, the breed of cat that most other cat breeds are supposed to have descended from so you're not wrong.
Did you go outdoors with her since she was smol?
Do you use the harness so she won't get lost?
Can she go with out it? Did you train her as a kid to be ok with it? Did you had previous experience with animal handling?
Ps: wrote she but don't know if it's actually a girl :)
Mungo is a boy.
He was 3-4 months old when we tried to harness train him. After he got comfortable enough with us and the house, we started to put the harness on him, just for 5-10 min/day and we fed him and played with him while wearing it. When he got comfortable with the harness we started to take him out in the garden, also for a short amount of time and first in our arms or on our shoulders and after he got confident we let him walk around a little. We always listened to him and if he wasn’t in the mood or he was scared we took him inside.
We use the harness because he is an indoor cat and sometimes he gets scared by cars or cyclists and we don’t want to risk it, although most of the time when he gets scared he goes in the backpack or he pushes himself against my shoulder-neck-head area.
I had cats as a kid, but Mungo is my first cat i am 100% responsible of.
Hope i answered all your questions, if not i am happy to answer more.
Thank you very much.
I was always wondering if this is something viable I could do, i consider my city Appartment to small for an animal like a cat, and would feel sad if my cat friend had not enough space and nature in it's live.
I adore what you are doing.
In my city we are surrounded by nature, but it's a bit of a trip and it's busy with people.
And I lack the "garden-transition" you describe for getting used to it.
The options I was thinking about:
If I were to save an older cat from a shelter I guess it still would be better at my home in any way, but it would be probably to late to learn what you did.
If I were to get a kitten, I would think it would be better off with someone who can offer more space.
If you are adopting a shelter cat then don’t expect it to like harnesses or want to go on walks.
An older cat will just like to sleep and chill all day, so an apartment is totally fine.
A kitten is hit or miss, but an apartment is still fine as long as you provide vertical space (cat towers, cat trees, cat shelves) for lots of climbing and jumping.
OP’s cat is a special breed called an Abyssinian which is bred for doglike behaviour. This makes harness and walk training super easy, as the cat naturally wants to do it. A moggie from a shelter would not be the same at all. Some shelter cats will have great personalities and can be trained to do this, but often they will have a lot of fear or trust issues so you should be prepared for them to not want to go outside with you.
In your busy city situation I would just get an older apartment cat and give them lots of enrichment indoors.
Amazing!!! Could you tell me where this backpack is from?😍
Thank you! Sure, i got it on Amazon, the brand is Pecute.
Thank you so much!
Is that in Germany?
Yes it is! How could you tell?
The photo was taken in the Taunus area.
You would be good at games like [Geoguessr](https://www.geoguessr.com/) or the alternative (with better free gameplay, apparently), [Eighty clicks](https://www.eighty-clicks.com/). Or, at least you would be good when the location was Germany.
Git outta here and come back in "Cats on backpacks next to a big pile of logs" week!
(jk I love this pls don't go)
Is the kit fully grown? Those ears are so big! He's beautiful
I think he was 5-6 months old in this photo. Abyssinian are medium-small cats and they keep their slender figure also into adulthood. The ears stay big for life, and i love them.
r/shouldercats would appreciate this :)
What an adventurous feline
That's a handsome cat you have right there!
That cat ready for adventure
omg they're a travel buddy
Love the cat. Also I have that same Catabago!! My girl loves it. Seems yours does too :) happy hiking!
I envy the relationship you both shared
Lol too late for what???
I'm SO IN LOVE with this new thing! Please post more pictures!!
What backpack is that??
Pecute, found it on Amazon.
Given this sub is being flooded with animals on shoulders I'd judge you're not to late, even if the think is a bit overdone already
Does anyone know what bag that is? I have been looking for one just like that for my cat.
It’s a Pecute backpack, i found it on Amazon.
Pretty sure this is perfect timing for you and your absolutely adorable shoulder cat to arrive. All hail shoulder cat.
After the gorgeous cat with a soulful expression, the thing that caught my eye was the backpack. I did a quick Google to see if the Abyssinian is one of the cats known to like car rides, and apparently so - in addition to leash walking and backpacks!
Thank you for sharing that picture, that really made my day.
#8: ...*They should do good on leashes and cat backpacks.*
I honestly thought that was a very small mountain lion
This looks like a live action Miyazaki
I think we should all take a moment to appreciate that this cat isn’t morbidly obese like so many other creatures on this subreddit
Great cat! Abbys are real people cats! 👍🏻
I can’t tell if you’re late or not, but you do have a text.
Right on time
I swear this background was a photo question on 94%!
I live this game a lot :) gorgeous cat.
Good luck collecting all the music notes.
Reminds me of Jak and Daxter
Aww looks like he/she loves it
Jealous. Ya’ll are both so cute
Your watch is telling you to track your walk!
Wowww! That's am amazing photo! What breed of cat is that btw? The ears make me think it's an exotic mix.
Edit: I scrolled and saw. Good stuff tho
This picture remind me of the main character in the tv series his dark materials
Is this an Abyssinian cat?
This is like a real life version of an r/imaginarysliceoflife post
You're both really cute it's like this is straight out of a Disney movie about a girl and her cat going on adventures
This made me smile, thank you!
What a pretty kitty.
This feels like a studio ghibli scene come to life. That look of bliss on his face is sublime.
That’s a cute catpanion
I love all of this so much. The bliss on kitty's face!
We have an aby mix! Sweetest cat ever!
The new Dora movie is looking lit af.
I have a little Aby too! Such fun kitties!
Wait is there a shoulder cat trend or event right now?
There are so many
Taking the Aby for walkies, i miss my old Aby!
A wizard is never late
What a beautiful feline! Enjoy!
I thought the thumbnail was a man beside a deer on its back legs.
absolutely too late, someone cut down and neatly stacked the forest before you got there.
I thought not too late to see what is left of the forest not yet cut down. Then realized: oh for the shoulder cat thing.
You look like a pokemon trainer with your first pokemon starting out on your new adventure! Lol
Abyssinian cats are so beautiful ! This one is a well groomed, sublime cat.
I love this
It's never too late for cat pictures
I thought that was a big rabbit for a second lol
Dora over here.
Jesus Christ that is a cute cat.
That cat is gorgeous
What a beautiful Abyssinian! And such well-stacked logs.
Cute cat and shirt!
Cat: "While a person thinks that he is in charge"
Only some people will understand what’s on her watch. No I’m not done with my exercise.
