Not a great look for McGinn and Luiz here...
By - thebestrc
McGinn & Luiz aren't DMs though. McGinn is more box to box and Luiz is an 8
Luiz is played as a DM though
I'm saying you can't bitch they score poorly at DM when they're not DMs. That's my point.
They'd both play better in a 3 with an actual DM behind them. For now we're just shoehorning them there because the other options aren't as good.
Playing them there limits there progressive actions.
Are they not the same thing?
Not for me.
Yes they play in the same position but they don't facilitate the same role in the team.
What is the difference? Both are roles that demand well rounded, hard working players that can press, recover the ball, carry it forward, pass it at a decent level and get into the box.
Luiz isn't box to box he doesn't hustle and harry like Mcginn. I rarely see luzi drive forward with the ball whereas Mcginn does this quite often.
Likewise Luiz's passing is better than Mcginn hence he can be more static and spray.
Both have strengths and weaknesses and are not like for like players.
> McGinn & Luiz aren't DMs though.
Yet they also score poorly on progressive actions. They're the big weak point in this team.
Are we still knocking players ability and going on about a DM? The January window is ages away lads, lets have a bit of faith in Smith and the squad we have. #UTV
Yeah fair play mate, just thought it was an interesting visualization and was surprised to see McGinn's progression stats to be so low in comparison with his peers
It should have been addressed in the summer window.
My point is Deano and his staff know more about our squad than me or you, they decided to not get a DM in because they have belief in our entire squad, something some of our fans need to do too.
IF it goes t!ts up we'll need to address it in January, but doubt we'll need to as we have an excellent squad and manager. UTV
We don’t have a fantastic midfield, that was obvious last season.
So how come you can see this apparent issue yet our manager and owners have not? Bit of faith would be great. Another glass half empty Villa fan.
What do our owners know about football. Do you think they watch every game and ring Purslow saying “the midfields not progressing the ball or protection out back four, make sure we put a bid in for Bissouma”?
Mate the stats show they aren’t great, and watching our midfield without Grealish showed they aren’t up to it.
Deans a great manager but it’s not like he’s never made mistakes. Remember buying Wes and Jota or loaning Drinkwater?
It’s not about faith, we could have improved on it in the summer we didn’t.
You are not a fan of our MF fair enough, I think like our owners and management we have enough in that department, if as you say we don't, MF players would have been brought in.
Our superb youth setup are real prospects, we are very well setup and not buying in players to stifflle the young players just cause certain armchair fans demand it.
As you say mistakes were made here before so let the young lads shine and come through. We're 3 games into a season, can't be writing off players or assuming weakness in MF this soon all because of a stat. UTV
I don’t mind our midfielders. My big issue is that the midfielders we have are all suited to playing in a 3 man midfield but deal wants to play Watkins and Ings up to together, so it’s difficult to see how that’s going to work for me.
We’ve got some great youth players but the ones who are with the first team squad are all attacking midfielders.
Hopefully once we are at full strength I’m proved wrong UTV
Pleanty of games for DS to get the balance right, we're 3 games in and I have every faith going into the second half of the season we'll be in excellent shape and likely need little additions come January.
This is why they don’t work well as a pair. We need a proper DM.
I think both are ok but not as a pair.
This is why we need a Bissouma
What is it with our fans and Bissouma? Fantastic player, but if he leaves Brighton he’s not coming to Villa.
I’m not saying he’d join, but I’d like him to
McGinn is not a DM by any discernible metric, annoying he gets lumped into these stat graphs and tables
I mean Luiz is close to respected CDMs on this chart so this doesn't scream we need a CDM to me like it is to others.
We also haven't played through mid all that much, I feel like that is what this shows me.
Meh, it's difficult to discern huge amounts from this data. Soucek, for instance, is apparently low on attacking contribution... We know there's more to attacking contribution than just progressions. Same goes for Declan Rice.
Said in the thread yesterday that McGinn needs replacing for these reasons. We really dropped the ball in the summer not getting a better midfielder.
When Grealish was out we couldn’t progress the ball. Martinez saved a ridiculous amount of shots last season, konsa and Mings both blocked more that most.
Our midfield doesn’t protect or move the ball forward.
Bailey and Buendia were brought in to fix that issue. Looks like we'll get to see Bailey tomorrow again, maybe even starting, and we'll get to see both of them for Everton.
The midfield should be progressing the ball to them. You see other midfielders do it in the teams that finished above us.
Also neither Buendia or Bailey are going to offer our back 4 more protection.
I really don't like how the knives are out for these two atm, particularly mcginn. If either of these players left they would be going to teams much higher up the table than us. Recently ive seen people questioning mcginns effort which is the biggest nonsense I've ever heard.
One of the players in this graph whose smack bang in the middle got relegated in a team who got 28 points.
