PanzyGrazo

good thing i'm broke

wharblgarbl

Oh they'll remember the debts :)

MightiestChewbacca

Debts will be printed out and saved to magnetic tape. Record of deposits will be encrypted and sent to the cloud, vulnerable to deletion and loss.. "We're very sorry, but we can't verify that you had any money at this bank....apart from your mortgage"

RyzenRaider

I laugh, but that's probably more true than we think.

returnfalse

Tape backups are still used a lot more than you think. They’re quite a bit less prone to failure from my understanding. Quite a few of ‘em in the datacenter my old employer kept its primary servers and data storage in, although we didn’t use tape ourselves.

UnknownTechnology

Our entire infrastructure at a large organisation is secured through Tape backups. Their high storage density, compact size and quick data transfer speeds make them incredibly useful for large scale data sets that need to be brought onto multiple environments simultaneously. I think it's a stigma that people have to not like them.

returnfalse

Yeah, I think most that think they’re some archaic, useless storage system have just about fuckall knowledge about what they speak of.

dazedjosh

I mean, I fucking hated tape change day at some of my early IT jobs 16 years ago because they had shitloads of backups. But they are a good medium when you remove the manual labour. God I loved it when we got our first tape loader. Edit - Actually it wasn't all bad. If I was really hungover on a Monday, and I was in my early 20s so that was pretty common, it was brainless work in a cool room. So that part was pleasant.

Justanaussie

Years ago, like mid 80s years ago when ATMs couldn't contact the main server they just assumed people had money in their account and let them withdraw it. I was an apprentice at the time and I got used to going to the local National ATM during it's scheduled maintenance time in the few days before pay day so I could get some money to live on. Of course the ATM remembered the transaction so as soon as the link came back up your account would be debited, or in my case go into the red.

wharblgarbl

Lots of cheques and balances in the banking system lol

fn3putt

I work for part of westpac, BT. Every back office system in our area is down!

taurangastevens

I work at CBA, same deal. Ended up logging off for the day

missymia161

Also work for Westpac (stg, bsa, bom). It was a looong afternoon dealing with pissed off people. We also couldn't contact some internal teams with the outage

fn3putt

Yeah we gave up and logged off. I'm still wfh so logged back in at 8pm and still working now!

McRibsAndCoke

I just logged into my Westpac mobile app perfectly fine? How widespread is this exactly?

fn3putt

No idea. Just received an update, it's a DDoS with something called Akamai Prolexic. No idea what that is but affecting lots of businesses by the sounds of it.

returnfalse

Akamai is one of the bigger CDN service providers in the world. This is on par with the Fastly failure a week or two ago. Kind of makes me wonder what’s going on as these providers, both have an excellent uptime track record.

McRibsAndCoke

Oh wow, so they're confirming a cyber attack. [Akamai is an internationally reknowned content delivery network, cloud and cybersecurity company. Prolexic is their DDoS mitigation service](https://www.akamai.com/us/en/products/security/prolexic-solutions.jsp)

Propersian

Nah, think their shit just broke - [https://www.itnews.com.au/news/major-banks-online-services-eftpos-airline-systems-go-down-566080](https://www.itnews.com.au/news/major-banks-online-services-eftpos-airline-systems-go-down-566080) ironically in the system meant to prevent DDoS. I heard it was a DDoS, asked r/sysadmin and they confirmed just an outage.

heyroons

Does this mean Westpac is vulnerable to DDOS attack since it’s routed away from prolexic Akamai?

it-is-my-cake-day

What? Any news outlets confirming on the cyber attack?

McRibsAndCoke

Nah nah, I was just making an assumption per u/fn3putt's update.

Evening_Tree

Ah yes. That's the one. Akamai Prolapse.

neoghostz

The peolexic solution is a scrubbing solution in which you drop most of your links, stand up a gre tunnel and inspect every bit a traffic. It's the "legacy" method of protecting these endpoints and usually blocks legit traffic. To have all four targeted is interesting...sure it's not a provider edge like eft/terminal solutions?

SJDidge

It seems to be fixed now. It was down for me about 1 hour ago.

Tailgatingtradie

Good thing most of my money is in poorly researched crypto.

sentientketchup

Fuckin amateur. Mine is all in tazos and Space Jam shrinky dinks.

Mr_Mojo_Risin_83

waiting for my pog investment to mature. got a ren & stimpy slammer and all

legofduck

Its Alf, he's back but in Pog form!

licking-windows

Preach

iMightEatUrAss

I feel attacked

69ingchipmunk2

Me to, and a token 50 on GME just to be part of something awesome

Flangella-Fairyfloss

I use one of the banks you mentioned and mine is working.

Ax28

Strange, it's stopped working for me and everyone around me! Are you able to sign in to the app (i.e., see balance etc)?

Flangella-Fairyfloss

Yep all my banking apps are working.

Ferret_Brain

Bank apps were working for us at the time but we weren’t able to pay for anything with our card. Thank goodness we were just paying for parking to leave and had the cash to do so.

spicychinos

No reception

BeingGoing

This is an issue with Akamai, which is affecting a lot of services

Ax28

CDN's not having a good run lately with Fastly going down last week

BeingGoing

Bets on who’s next!

[удалено]

Propersian

They were down the other week.

IcyCrust

This statement is true most weeks.

Propersian

CloudFlare is pretty good IME.

wharblgarbl

Not FacebookCDN. Sign up now! It's free* /s

0DMATH0

AWS

jampola

I know, I actually had to debug an error in my code...!

ProceedOrRun

When Akamai goes down things are serious. Those guys are massive.

CapnFancyPants

https://downdetector.com/status/akamai/

Sorryboss

How do you know? Is there an outage announcement?

BeingGoing

I work at a business that’s affected by the issue

it-is-my-cake-day

Do you have some evidence to back this up?

flutitis

The issue seems to be Akamai DNS, not Dynamic Site Accelerator or other products, but there is nothing on the Akamai service status yet.

it-is-my-cake-day

Ok thanks. It appears a lot of folks are trying to figure out the root cause but none are able to pinpoint.

BeingGoing

It was specifically an issue with akamai prolexic, which routes traffic to prevent DDoS attacks. My company and a lot of banks use this service. I was talking with our team (who were dealing with the issue) about it this afternoon

flutitis

Seems to be Akamai DNS only, but not 100% sure.

BeingGoing

Yeah so it’s the akamai prolexic product which routes traffic to prevent DDoS attacks

flutitis

Ironic!

Bourkster

Looks to also be hitting smaller independents like ME Bank and BankAus. Interactive Brokers also went down at the same time.

Bourkster

RBA site is now down.

dion_o

Including their online banking app?

Sunburnt-Vampire

Finally, being with a tiny credit union is paying off! Our banking app was down for like three weeks or something dumb earlier this year, but now everyone else is down while ours still works! How the tables have turned!

Benu5

We had EFTPOS down at work today. Had a bunch of adults throwing tantrums over having to go and get cash or perhaps, God forbid, come back tomorrow.

0DMATH0

Considering alot of people switched from cash to card during the pandemic its not a surprise.

aussieaj86

Can't wait for my $15 overdraw account fee (app still works to let me know that part) for the account I can't get into to shuffle money around in. Top shelf stuff.

kremerturbo

Westpac, Commbank + ANZ online / web based banking are all definitely down. Can't check apps as my phone has no service here.

boredhistorian94

Westpac is working for me

pongomostest1

My W'pac is not working. Strange shit happening.

boredhistorian94

I’ve been able to pay with my card with no problem I dunno what’s going on 😐

seventh_skyline

NAB EFTPOS/HICAPS currently working Commbank netbank not.

jacko202

Is Commonwealth working for anyone? Still down on my end.

psychochicky

Still down

69ingchipmunk2

That's why I'm with ING No fees and reliable So I can always see the fuckall I have

Uveampaline

Mine's still not working.

crrrock

Go cashless, they say. It'll be so much better, they say 😐

physiokat

Yeah it's funny, my friends wonder why I always carry a bit of cash, then things like this happen.

Bergasms

I worked with banking apps for about 5 years and had to do a lot of work with teams working on various banking backends. And yeah, I always carry cash because some of those systems are a house of cards, and more than a few of the cards are soggy, and the table is not level, and there is a breeze.

oldmateysoldmate

NAB app is working in Brisbane @ 5pm

equinub

And to think that the government is actively pushing for expanding the "welfare card" outside of Hervey bay and Bundaberg. I'm glad i still have $20 in my pocket tonight for noddles and soup. I wonder if i can "cash" in my 2 x $25 NSW "wine and dine" poverty food vouchers?

anormalhumanperson99

eftpos was down in some stores today at lunch time, caused some chaos and long queues at the places that did have working terminals. I just wanted some bloody lunch

Willo420

China on its way

NS_Ruffrider

OF Course it's on payday too lol

onefish256

NAB is up.

cricketAus

One of the service vendors had ab outage that serves everyone. We had an outage at our company too. We rerouted our network to DR site and all is fine now. But a lot of businesses were still affected

youngeng

So your DR site exposes your website or whatever bypassing Akamai?

cricketAus

Yep that network is routed via UK.

DeltaPositionReady

UP banking has been live all day without an issue. But I'm guessing that's either cause they're small or because their IT departments are all young, not ancient.

Dylion99

Looks like the 1% have finally come for our screen-dollars.

Rooboy75

Probably all hosted on something like AWS Amazon server

Ax28

Yeah I was thinking something similar, it's a bit concerning that all banks seem to be hosted on the same system though haha

apsilonblue

They're not hosted there, it'd just be part of their content delivery. No different than the outage with Fastly last week or the week before. The problem is these are large CDNs that host a very large portion of content for a very large number of companies so an outage at one has very wide spread impact.

Ax28

Makes sense!

sostopher

Akamai.

CapnFancyPants

Looks to be primarily banking services? I'm not seeing outages with other Australian sites. Will be interesting to hear what has happened.

right_ho

Mines working.

pongomostest1

Mines not, w'pac.

chiknbangr

https://www.4bc.com.au/mass-outage-of-australian-internet-banking-services/

monkeydrunker

But... but... but.... the CLOUD?! Everything is better in the Cloud! It can't go down.

neoghostz

Hey buddy none of this is cloud related. If the problem is Akamai Prolexic then it's all on premises solutions...

Andrew_Higginbottom

Stage one of China's planned invasion to take Australia and all its resources..

DeltaPositionReady

Have you read Zero Day Code? Amazing novel. Pretty sure its written by an Australian author too. China is starving, looks to invade the food bowl of south east Asia, launches multiple zero day exploits at America to keep them busy and not notice. Too bad it only takes 3 days of America under cyber attack to completely collapse. Great novel.

moomooland

is this available in text format?

DeltaPositionReady

Hmmm not sure. It's an audible original I think. Pretty sure it's free.

elitesill

How much money did Australian business just lose?

Ok-Salamander-2787

Good thing I use cash.

worriedaboutall

Oh yeah mine too what happened

TheLazyGamerAU

I haven't been able to use the heritage bank app on my Pixel5 since I bought it last month, I'm still waiting for that to get fixed.

Maeve89

It's funny, my local building society had a major outage on Sunday that lasted the entire day with lingering effects on Monday too that was very similar to this. I wonder if it's somehow related?

scorpio_rising12th

this is what cyber warfare looks like
