It’s killing me I can’t remember the name of this anime.
The MC is human and ends up going to school in the spirit world. Where he’s only accepted by a few people. He gets his recommendation and power from this old man who doesn’t want it anymore the previous most powerful person. They fly on swords. The teachers of the school are all fighting a battle somewhere else so they teach as inanimate objects. There’s a class on human world things where they use a cellphone. He gets jumped by a chubby character and beats him after he cracks the magic test. Please help!?!
Anybody have any recommendations on where to buy good quality anime shirts? Saw a few places but want to make sure I get something good quality. Thanks in advance!

If u want a fun ecchi show, try Killing Bites. It knows it is not a deep story but plays into that fact. It follows a human animal hybrid girl who fights in matches against others like herself for companies to rule the Japanese markets. She is part human and part Honey Badger.
The premise is kinda like Netflix's Kengan Ashura, where fighters compete for companies. It's full of violence and gore. Each character that fights is a different animal. The ecchii part comes from the girl characters. They never full transform into animals but more the ears and tails. (Cloths get shreaded in fights) the guys turn full into animals like a dude is part lion so when he changes he looks like a bi pedal lion not much human
Gangsta is a cool one if you liked Black Lagoon. It's about a couple of guys that do odd jobs but mainly revolves around them being hitmen. The world has people with gifted physical abilities like extra strength or speed that are used as mercenariesor hited help. It follows 2 guys one normal person and his partner who is one of the special people who also happens to be deaf.
Hellsing Ultimate is another good gory show. It involves a secret British organization that hunts vampires with the help of there own vampire.
Drifters is set up like an isekai. It takes actual historical figures and summons them to a fantasy style world. They get separated into 2 categories called drifters and ends. Drifters want to help humans, and ends want to end humanity. Some famous people that history looks in a positive light were wrongly killed in our world and decide to destroy humanity for it. Like Joan of Arc who fought for France was burned at the stake when she lost to the British so she wants to destroy the world
I like it. But I like it specifically because it is a neverending trainwreck of characters who are all shitty, selfish people constantly doing shitty, selfish things and then stressing themselves and each other out with their ever-growing web of bullshit.
It's not a series you watch to have someone to root for. It's a series you watch to get some schadenfreude hits from a bunch of people being miserable. They're all awful and they all deserve each other. I enjoy watching them squirm.
Demon Slayer is the only anime that I won't let myself watch on a smaller screen. It's so bright and colorful that watching it on my phone or even my tablet feels like im watching a standard def version of the show. I have a really nice OLED TV at home that really amplifies the experience. Add to that a nice sound bar and it makes a world of difference.
Are there any other shows/movies that should be watched on a bigger better screen?
Pokemon: diamond & pearl took too many wrong directions form my liking. 3.5
Cencoroll - just didn't have any strong feelings. I wanted to like it, real shame. 2.5
Is Log Horizon worth the watch? I have heard good things about it. I'm worried its gonna start off strong like SAO did but then get dumb. Since they are both based on people getting stuck in a game.
Please try to keep it as spoiler free as you can since I haven't seen it
It does not get dumb, as in it does not start suffering from increasing threats changing the rules (too badly) but it does suffer from pacing problems. And the childrens arcs can be a tad too basic for too long to maintain fun. But the central cast and events of the world remain engaging.
Depends on what you're looking for in it. If you liked the stakes of SAO then they're quite different in Log Horizon. Log Horizon is about the exploration of what it means to be stuck there, and how that has and is constantly changing the world and those in it. It's not just about getting out or defeating a villain, it's a much truer adventure in that sense, and that side of it only gets stronger each arc
I enjoyed it and thought the second season was much better than the general reception on a rewatch.
It takes more of a look at how society as a whole deals with living in a world of game mechanics compared to SAO's focus on clearing floors for the most part (at least with the early story).
Might get a little muddled at times but I like how it asks and attempts to answer questions like "Are NPCs just as real as other people now?"
I liked SAO when it consistently had a threat of death and it was all built with that in mind, but then when they went to alfhiem, there were no consequences at all.
Log Horizon has no threat of death as everyone respawns, so if you're looking specifically for that then it won't be the right choice. It's great in a lot of other ways though.
No I was just giving that as an example on why I thought SAO went down hill. That was a big focus point in that show. It doesnt need to have that as a mechanic for me
The first season is fairly well-regarded. The second season is pretty disliked.
I didn't even like the first season, honestly. Too much "look at how smart I am, I will show you how smart I am by over-narrating everything while I outwit people using basic reasoning because I am so smart." On top of that it feels the need to over-explain MMORPG game terminology and mechanics. Which always felt weird to me because I'd *assume* the people watching the show already know this sort of thing. But if you want to have an anime tell you what tanking and crowd control are, Log Horizon will do those things and more.
Is the Complete Series DVD wtih 720 episodes english dub legit? Has 36 discs.
I see it on Ebay, but that's putting around 7 hours and 40 minutes of video on each disc.
The last time I bought a single DVD with 4 movies on it, was like watching colored oatmeal. It was really bad, and my 4k player could hardly upscale it. I had no idea all 4 movies would be on a single disc, when I bought it.
Colored oatmeal might be an exaggeration, but not by much.

At 20 episodes per disc, no way in hell it's legit. DVD would normally be 4-5 episodes per disc, Blu Ray can comfortably hold up to about 9.
If it's on Ebay, you can share the link here for us to look at it further but I'm going to guarantee it's a bootleg or home rip/burn, probably of 240p (or worse) files with a shit encode.
Check for other red flags like the seller describing it as "region free" or "all region" – bootleggers like to advertise that as a perk, but the truth is that most licensed anime is going to be region-specific, because that's generally how licensing works.
I know it’s pretty obvious/narrowed in this case but I would like to commend the effort/willpower it must have taken not to call this person out for the utter lack of show title…..
Heyy all, I’m looking for anime movie recommendations that will move me to tears.
At the moment, I haven’t seen anything that can top or even come close to the way Your Name turned me into a complete mess the first time I watched it, and even on subsequent watches, I still tear up.
I‘ve watched Weathering With You and A Silent Voice, which ..almost.. took me there, but neither really landed the emotional climax for me.
I’ve also seen Your Lie in April which I actually found to be a chore, I’m not generally a fan of romance anime and found this one tedious.
Your Name just resonated with me so much and I’ve been trying to chase that high ever since. I need something that’s either completely devastating or utterly beautiful, but maybe I need to accept that nothing will come close to Your Name for me? I have “In This Corner of the World” and “Grave of the Fireflies” currently on my radar.
Out of what everyone has recommended, Maquia and Wolf Children hit hardest for me.
It’s a bit of a chore, but if you can get through Clannad, Clannad: Afterstory’s middle to ending parts are pretty much guaranteed to wreck someone.
The Bunny Girl movie made me pretty emotional but I don’t think I cried.

Those are both very emotional movies for sure, I haven't watched Grave of the fireflies yet, but I feel like In this corner of the world does not elicit that kind of ugly cry, it has a more sombre and subdued style.
Have you tried older Shinkai movies? Garden of words is the only one I haven't watched yet and I feel like it's the one that has a higher chance of being what you're looking for among those.
Other movies that may potentially work are Maquia or I want to eat your pancreas.
As someone who also sobs at Your Name even on rewatches, Garden of Words doesn't hit that hard. I have a deeply personal connection to the story of GoW, but it's just not that same kind of emotion that triggers a crying outburst in me.
I’m a sucker for anything that’s a emotional gut punch but lately I’m running dry on that sort of thing
Finally got around to watching love flops, and plastic memories and the detective is already dead. Is there a specific genre name for stuff that’s not sad all the way through but rather builds your emotions just to crush them to pieces and leave you feeling dead and hallow at the end of it all? So whats the big "Spicy" anime for winter 2023 season? I'm talking ecchi, uncensored, borderline hentai anime. Every season usually has 1 or 2. Last one I watched was Redo of Healer. So who has the sauce?
There are three fanservice heavy shows this season. Those are:
- My Life as Inukai-san's Dog
- Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister
- Ayakashi Triangle
The first one is basically soft core beastiality, and the last one is from a manga from the same creator as To-Love Ru (though you'll unfortunately have to wait for the BD release for the uncensored version). Onimai isn't quite as degenerate and it's not really borderline hentai, but it's very horny and it has an uncensored version.

It's worth noting that it's just the artist of the To Love Ru pair, so the degenerate writing that developed later in Darkness won't be here.

I’m kinda just starting anime I mean I’ve watched a couple death note, kill la kill, a good chunk of naruto and my hero. I’ve only watched dub because I usually watch it late or my girlfriend is here and is dyslexic. Am I missing out by not switching to sub? I get anxious making that decision every new show I start thinking I’m missing stuff and before I start something else long like one piece I wanted to know what you think. If a shows only in sub I wouldn’t mind watching it if it was good .
There's many shows that only have a sub, and there's been plenty discussions about their respective quality. In the end, if the show you wanna watch has a dub and that's how you wanna watch it then there's rarely much reason not to do so.

I am looking for an anime i have watched in the past but i only remember one specific scene from it right now.
The striking thing i remember is that a girl was reading "being and time" by martin heidegger. The main character (m) and the person reading were in the school library or some sort of library. They were both younger (under 30) and i think it was some kind of romance anime. At least it had elements of romance in it. The show also had a sadder tone to it.
I remember really liking this show and would like to see it again but somehow i forgot everything else about it.

How far in the past are we talking when you first saw it? Because apart from the specific book title the scene could have easily been something from any number of different series, even including things like Stepmom's Daughter, but that show is quite recent. Or there's Oresuki, much of which takes place in the school's library. Or Hyouka which has more than a few library scenes, and even the clubroom has a lot of bookshelves.
Without saying where you watched it, can you remember if it was via legal or illegal means? The only reason I ask is because once in a while fansubbers might screw around with "memesubs". Official translations *usually* won't outright change the name of a book when the title is printed on the screen, but fansubbers might. Either way, knowing might help narrow things down.

Anyone else stopped watching the seasons as they air? I can't be bothered getting excited for 20 minutes of content then waiting another week. Just going through my backlog which now grows massively 4 times a year.
I certainly watch less seasonal stuff. Taking a break from anime, or sticking to tried and true stuff can be a good way to reprioritise how you want to spend your time.

Do any of the following seasonals get substantially 'better' after their first episode- MagiRevo, Mononogatari, Beasts of Ars, Kaina and Nier? I dropped them not because I disliked them but simply because I don't have enough time this season so I'm only watching stuff that I'm really enjoying. Wondering if I should transfer them to on-hold list instead..
Mononogatari, Ars, and MagiRevo. All above-average but just safe and predictable, nothing deep.
Nier - a bit of a different story than the game.
Kaina - it's anime original, so who knows where it may end up, but story is at least interesting.
Ars has a decently endearing cast, but it's still in the 'character gathering' phase of its plot, so if you want something with a stronger hook it might not do it for you.
I think that Mononogatari has had the best plot glowup from a lackluster episode 1- but still looks drab, so if visuals are a major element of enjoyment you might be better skipping out on this one.
i think the first episode definitely portrayed him as way more of an edgelord than he is at heart - but he's been making some pretty swift progress. I'd say he's quite a bit less gloomy and insufferable as of the current episode than he was in the premiere. Whether or not that shift is enough for your tastes is up to you - but there has undoubtedly been progress on that front.
Hi daily commenter. I cannot recommend MagiRevo enough. Fantastic writing and characterization and visuals.
Giant Beasts of Ars is kinda interesting and fleshing out its world but I’m not sure if it is worth watching.
NieR is delayed as others have said. But it gets immensely better after the first episode. Whenever it resumes, I think you should absolutely catch up.

Everyone says magirevo is great, fine I'll give it another shot! I really liked the visuals but I didn't particularly like the characters based on episode 1 at least.
MagiRevo had a great first episode IMO, but it's continued to get more interesting with each successive one. It's probably my favorite show of the season.
Nier production has been suspended and is presumed to resume next season, you might as well put it on hold for now until we see if and when the new episodes come out.
Kaina is one of my favorite anime of the season, but I liked it since episode one. I will say that the world is better explored by episode 4 with more areas being shown and new characters added to the cast.
hmm out of those I am watching Tensei Oujo and Kaina, I think they stayed pretty consistent so far, as in they don't have "more" that would make you love them now if you didn't already.
MagiRevo and Kaina are both good, but they both continue to do what you’d expect them to do from their first episodes. Neither has any big surprises so far.
Nier is delayed.
Nier is on an indefinite hiatus, so you can keep that on hold until it returns. It did get better after episode 1 though.
And MagiRevo is a must-watch, personally
Nier really picks up episode 4 [](#hikariactually). The show itself if on hold after 3 episodes due to production delays, so theres not much point of continuing with it for now
I wouldn't say Mononogatari felt any different from its premiere through 3 episodes
I have a question to ask everyone. I have been watching anime for a pretty long time now but almost everytime I finish an anime (with some exeptions) I get sad because I either didnt like the ending or because I won't get to see the characters anymore which gives me this "why did I even watch this" feeling. Of course the "journey" to the ending is always fun but what's the point if I'm sad at the end anyway. What are your opinions on this?

It's just being unhappy that something that made you happy has come to an end.

Just because the ending didn't go how you would have liked, doesn't mean all that time you spent enjoying the journey is for naught.
Anime is a medium of entertainment, if it kept you entertained, it was a good choice to watch it.

The short of it is that it's a common feeling that many people experience, and it's akin to experiencing grief when you're "lost" a show. There are a lot of ways that people cope with it, but I think the most reassuring thing is that the feeling usually passes with time.
If I really enjoy a series, I think it deserves giving it a bit of a introspection. What I do after finishing a series that I enjoyed is think about what the central messages and themes were, and I write them down somewhere (maybe in a discussion or rewatch thread; depends on how I'm watching it). I find that the act of organizing my thoughts and writing them down is pretty useful for remembering and processing them.
Ultimately, the experience is something you can grow on; if there's something that really touches you about a series, there's something there that you can take away and keep with you.
That's not an anime thing. Any well written piece of fiction will make you a bit sad to be over since it means you won't be able to spend more time in this world with these characters. All that means is that the writers or writers did their job. The medium dosen't matter, film, tv, video games.
It has other themes than just romance, I found it quite mature, it was one of the first anime I sat down to watch when I decided to see different things, it's good.
I don't think the mediocre romance can possibly be worse than some of the ill-timed and tone deaf humor shoehorning its way into some of the higher stakes drama - but that's probably just my selective memory of all the worst moments in H&C melding together, since it's been a while.
The anime covers all but one short story chapter (can't remember the number) through vol. 6, and the first chapter of vol. 7 (I believe that's chapter 38).
I'm so disappointed by the Eureka Seven sequel and the "movies". The original series was so damn good. Guess lightning can't strike the same place twice after all... so, anyone got any series similar to Eureka Seven in tones and themes?? Or maybe something that has a similar kind of quality?
The last anime I watched that was actually great was *Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku*. -sigh-
Someone once recommended After War Gundam X to me as a "proto-Eureka Seven." It doesn't give me the exact same feeling, but it's still really good and I can definitely see how it (may have) influenced Eureka Seven. (I don't think BONES evermentioned Gundam X as an influence on E7, but the two shows share an insane amount of similarities in terms of plot, characters, etc.) It's a standalone entry, so you don't need to have seen any other Gundam series to watch it.
It's not the only time BONES was like "Hey let's take something great we did and push out a really bad and debatably completely unnecessary sequel." Darker than Black says "hello."
For mecha-romance-action, take a look at [RahXephon](https://www.livechart.me/anime/4139) which is another BONES series. This one isn't talked about as much and is often derided as an Eva clone, but I found RX more palatable than Eva. (Also RX has a film but skip the shit out of it. It's recycled footage, out of order, mixed with new content, and it's pretty terrible all-around. Complete disservice to the series.)
There's also [Xam'd](https://www.livechart.me/anime/3896) (again, BONES) but it's *not* a mecha series. Still has a similar spirit of adventure and style like E7 does, though.

And where exactly is your proof that Bones themselves were the ones that pushed for a sequel? Eureka Seven and Darker than Black were both partially produced by MBS, and Darker than Black specifically was an Aniplex production. They could've very well demanded sequels because of ratings.
Not much, at least not much that vibes in the same way as E7. I can toss out a Darling in the FranXX recommendation, but I'm usually giving out the advice in reverse (in other words, people who see DITF and want more like it, so I tell them to watch E7) because I think FranXX is not a very good show over-all and, at times, is a lackluster imitation of parts of E7.
Though it's from the same era, it's not similar at all, but I have a bit of a soft spot for [Last Exile.](https://www.livechart.me/anime/3744) I want to reiterate that I do not think Last Exile is like Eureka Seven. However, it does have a boy and a girl going on a world-spanning adventure that has global implications, they get caught up in a power struggle involving a military force, they are "taken in" by a traveling group aboard a skyship that is run by what can best be described as an emotionally detached, occasionally abusive father surrogate, there are some romantic undertones (nowhere near as pronounced for the main characters as they are in E7) with interesting and fleshed out supporting cast, and it has an antagonist who becomes extremely fixated on the protagonists. It also has a setting that sort-of blends old and new technology, with a lot of pre-WWII aesthetic combined with improbable future technology. In E7, it's mecha and sky carriers, in LE, it's wingless aircraft and massive fantasy RPG-like sky ships.
Damn, I've seen FranXX and Last Exile. haha I'll have to make an anime list and edit my post with it. Also, I completely agree with FranXX!
The anime suggestions don't have to be exactly like Eureka Seven. I'd prefer maybe similar themes, but overall, I'd just like something with that kind of carefully crafted quality.
I just finished the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. The animation was on fire and it felt like every episode added new world building elements. I really liked the concept of curses and cursed spirits and there were a variety of different types of enemies. Aoi Todo is best boy and must be protected at all costs. I thought the exchange event was fun, a good way to get some awesome fights and develop the characters more especially the ones from Kytoto. I hope we get more of MechaMaru. It wasn't a perfect show by any means. I thought some of the pacing was a bit off. It felt a bit uneven in places. And from here I will tag.
[Jujutsu Kaisen] >!First off I thought the whole hiding Itadori from the others after his "death" was odd since GoJo just revealed him to them in a rather anti-climactic way. I thought maybe he would have a big damm hero moment during the exchange event but it was just a cheap gag. I also found the way they introduced characters odd. Itadori went from watching movies to focus his cursed energy to suddenly investigating a murder in a movie theater with some blond guy we never met. I had to rewatch to make sure I didn't miss something. That's not to mention all these new characters who appear during the Exchange event like Mei Mei and the miko outfit wearing woman who hates GoJo. I also wish we had gotten more with the human working with the cursed spirits. It seems like he must be one fo the three noble clans that are behind everything in the scorcer world based on his dress and mannerism. I am wondering if he is connected to the Kyoto student whose name I am not looking up to avoid spoilers. They have similar hair styles and facial structures. It looks like the could be siblings. I was also disappointed we didn't get more of Sukuna. I get he's not at full strength yet and needs more fingers but I was hoping we would see the pact made early on. There was the fight that I assume Itadori lost due to his power level at the time but we never see Sukuna take over. Also maybe don't give the fingers to the guy possessed by the guy who wants to collect the fingers!<
That all being said I had a lot of fun with this show. Now onto Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Maybe some of this stuff will get expanded on in the movie.

I feel like the more I go back and forth over my time but definitely trending more towards casual side lately.

Honestly have no idea; There should be a quiz where you answer like a few dozen questions and they put you on some spectrums (like for politics and stuff)!
I tend to have strong opinions about a lot of things, but they're often uncommon/weird opinions that I don't really see being in one thing or the other (casual/elitist).
I've been called both depending on who's trying to find something to throw at me... (I consider that a good litmus test to know if the person is a casual).
I'd say I'm closer to a casual because a lot of my favourites on the popular side (like a Gintama or One Piece). And I'm not very critical of everything I watch, I was clapping to Ayane-chan's High Kick for god's sake.
I've been around a bit longer than the average casual, I dig a bit further, and love things like LoGH and Patlabor which are on the less popular side, but I don't think that makes an elitist per se.
Where do you draw the line?

It feels odd to say "casual" considering I'm watching about a dozen seasonal shows, but I still think that description fits me better than "elitist". I watch a lot of anime though not as much as others, and I've started writing reviews on occasion and watching Spanish dubs for extra practice as I'm learning the language, but ultimately, I just watch what I think is fun. I have a pretty good idea by now of which genres I like, which ones I don't, and the ones I'm really picky about. At least half of the shows I watch are English dubs, but I don't mind watching with subs either. (I'd actually love to have subs when I'm trying to watch in Spanish.)

Yeah both it and "casual" have negative sides to it which is why I see it more as a spectrum question rather than fitting into solely those boxes with those terms.

I think when I started watching anime I didn’t know enough to tell what I’d like (never would have guessed I’m a romance fiend) and so I dabbled a lot in stuff that felt comfortable for a bit. Then I got a sense of what I liked and sought those out, starting from most recommended to least.
Nowadays I’ll give anything a chance and try to see the best in it. If that makes me casual, then that’s me!

I guess if you absolutely forced me to choose, the answer would be elitist. I have a blog, I know far more than the average viewer about production details and staff, and I try out nearly every new seasonal anime, I don't think I can be said to be a casual fan.
But I think this is a false dichotomy. I agree with the person who called themselves a "connoisseur" in spirit, though I'd like to choose a word that gives off a less pretentious air. Ultimately, I just love anime, and find myself with no real barriers to the kind of media I can like. Maybe I'm more excited for some weird artsy show than I am for the new big popular battle shounen, but at the same time, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is right next to Serial Experiments Lain in my top 10. My taste is just broad, my enjoyment comes down to my perception of quality more than any superficial signifiers like genre, demographic, age, subject matter, or art style. I can enjoy a trashy isekai or a mass appeal shounen if it's good, same as anything else, and I find myself intrigued by fetish media as a form of expression. Does the fact that I tend to find that the artsy shows have better quality and more interesting ideas make me an elitist? I feel like an "elitist" is someone who would discount all of those other kinds of works from being art in the first place rather than seek to explore and understand them as art. I find it unfitting to call myself elitist given all of this, I'm just very interested in art and thus I want to dig into it more and explore more stuff.

Yeah to an average run of the mill watcher I think almost anyone on /r/anime could be seen as more on the other side as we're on a subreddit dedicated to it.

Unless we're talking stillshots being used I can't tell if animation is good or bad.
I don't speak Japanese so i have no idea if a performance is good or bad. I alternate between JP and EN depending on cast, availability and if it's something i've seen previously in one language. For example I watched 2001 Fruits Basket dubbed so I was always going to watch 2009 Fruba dubbed. But I still watch JoJo subbed even with a decent dub available. I watch MHA both subbed and dubbed just to keep up with the story.
On the other hand I usually have no idea about supplemental material ie drama CDs, stage plays etc. If it's not in the show then it isn't applicable.
Casual. Haven't watched that many shows and I tend to stick to genres I like.

Somewhere close to the middle, I guess? In terms of the amount of time I've spent watching anime, participating in the fandom, learning Japanese, and so forth, it would be difficult for me to call myself a 'casual', although I'm certainly not as hardcore as some people are. In terms of what I watch, I almost never watch an anime solely because it is popular and have no interest in jumping on the bandwagon of the season just for the sake of it, so I could be considered an elitist in that regard. Ultimately though, if something is well-regarded for a long time I'm eventually going to find myself in the mood for it, and I'll almost always enjoy it as well - there's really only a handful of highly rated anime that I actively disdain (and, now that I think of it, most of them are probably what would be considered 'elitist' anime anyway), so in that regard I could be considered a casual. I also don't keep up a top 10 list or have any interest in 'which is better' debates, so I suppose that is a fairly casual attitude too, although what favourites I do have probably tend more towards the elitist side, especially these days.
I still consider myself a casual since meeting my standards for fun is easy but I have come to respect some of the views of more hardcore fans, I guess 'connoisseur' like another comment mentioned is better.
I have come to appreciate technical aspects of anime and sometimes it can definitely bother me when they fall flat but I won't love an anime just for visual prowess nor will I hate it if its bad. I have come to like End of Evangelion more after rewatch because of its artistic portrayal of a rather simple message. I like Kyousougiga and while I wished it was more humorous/SoL or explored some of its characters more, the visuals really elevate the zaniness of its setting and characters making fun to watch. Sonny Boy though? Looks great but *OH MY LORD ITS BORING*.
Its like I come to recognize what works have more ambition and extended to other demographics so I come to respect them more, whereas with 'fast food' anime my bar is still low but once it falls off I get more critical.
Anime with cute short haired genki girl? Pog, sign me up fam, I'm in. Good examples this season is Saving 80,000 Gold or Bofuri, very simple stories, sometimes looks like shit (80k having no fucking animation) but its nailing the reason I'm there. I still wished they looked better, I wished Mou Ippon had better sound design to convey impact, but they are still fun. Only thing it needs to do is keep it fun enough and I'm happy but recognizing its shortcomings helps me really differentiate anime I consider just fine and which are great and because sometimes I do want to like some anime more than I do.
Then again, my reply is by far the longest so far so my point of view may be skewed, I really don't know where I land.
Part of the fun with this little exercise is that it's hard to figure out exactly where we land. I feel like we share a lot here actually with me maybe showing a bit less care for the artistic or production side of things.

I don’t really believe in this dichotomy, personally. I think there really is just liking what one likes and following one’s muse. Why does simply having an open mind for exploration and diverse taste have to be “elitism”? Isn’t that something anyone is capable of if they care enough about a given field to invest themselves in it? Inversely, is anything done for personal enjoyment not “casual” by nature? I think this way of thinking just creates unnecessary walls and perceived hierarchies that just make things worse and more complicated for everyone and all adjacent discourse.
I apologize if this sounds a little conceited, I swear I’m trying at the opposite, but I just consider myself… someone who really loves anime, and that’s it? I try not to see casual and elitist people, and I definitely don’t see “casual” vs. “elitist” works either, just good ones. Good is good and that’s all there is.
Well this discussion isn't anything too serious and it's more of a spectrum of how you consume or appreciate anime, I wouldn't get too hung up on the buzzwords I used and think of them more as a guidepost.
Both terms do have negative connotations to them but that wasn't the point, was more to see which side of anime you lean towards either in the shows you tend to enjoy or what you look for in anime.
Everyone has their own definitions and perceptions so it's neat to see, we all obviously love good anime but digging deeper in what makes an anime "good" for us is the interesting part.
If I'm forced to choose between the two, I'm probably more of an elitist than a casual, but I don't like it. I see myself as a connoisseur rather than an elitist.
I know the difference between ambitious art and mass-produced entertainment. I recognize the names of directors, actors, and other staff. I consume a lot of anime from a wide range of genres and demographics. But I don't necessarily look down on any category of anime for lacking ambition or technical prowess. Just like how I can enjoy both an imported craft beer and a Miller High Life, I can enjoy a Kyousougiga and a Visual Prison.
Elitist means something different for everyone but for me personally, it feels like I'm firmly on the elitist side though I wish I was casual. Anime as a medium is very hard to stomach for me when it comes to certain things. It makes me really spiteful towards many popular titles and genres that I'm simply unable to enjoy.
I like chart pandering products in any other medium aside from anime. Arianna Grande? Bangers. Stupid action movie with The Rock? Fine way to lose an evening. Assassin's Creed 23? Love me some map clutter. But your average isekai? I end up loathing everything about it even though I want to enjoy it. And then I watch some convoluted masturbatory art nonsense like Sonny Boy and that thing moves me to tears. And it's not to say that I don't enjoy popular things like JJK or Demon Slayer but it doesn't leave the same impact that I wish it would.

Fam, I dunno how to say this clearly enough, you’ve internalized some *real* unhealthy shit you gotta unlearn. If your reaction to having been emotionally touched by a piece of art is to lament having liked “convoluted masturbatory art nonsense”, then you’ve simply trapped yourself in an imaginary mind-prison.
You’re putting so much weight on peoples’ messed-up perception vis a vis “snobbery” and “pretension”, you’re forgetting that *that emotional impact* is the thing that’s most important, and if that impact, that core at which you and the piece of art met, is *real*, something you’ve *immutably* experienced *first-hand*, then it’s *valuable* and that is *all* there is to it.
I’m in a similar boat to you; I hate bullshit anime! I don’t even engage with light novel isekai crap, I avoid that stuff on instinct! I don’t waste my time with it, and I don’t worry about that or consider it a detriment to my experience with anime because there’s so much anime out there I *do* enjoy and *do* consider worth my time! And it sounds to me like you’re in the exact same boat; you just need to embrace that your tastes are your tastes and shirk this weird insecurity about it, seek that which you love.
What you enjoy is what you enjoy, what you find value and worth in is what you find value and worth in, and your standards for what is worth your time are your standards for what is worth your time. It is simply what it is. That doesn’t make you a snob. That just makes you an informed, discerning viewer. Use that as a tool to find more works that impact you and give you value like Sonny Boy did, don’t let it be a drag on your perception.
Is it necessarily insecurity? I get where you're coming from, just because a bunch of people don't like something, or they think it's, I guess convoluted/superfluous, doesn't mean that you should follow that, and put it down if it worked for you. In fact, the Elitism guide 101 says you should own these opinions, which is probably the only good piece of advice in the guide.
But on the other hand, you can connect with something while perceiving some issues or even seeing it as "convoluted masturbatory art nonsense" in *your* own eyes, not public opinion. I get why people might think of Sonny Boy that way, I disagree, but I think of Vlad Love that way. And I love both of them.
Vlad Love, especially in its latter half, is the creative anime equivalent of watching an old man rub one out (for hours, as old men usually require). It doesn't make sense, it doesn't even attempt to do so, it throws so much bullshit at the wall, and it doesn't wait for anything to stick, just filling the room with absurd thoughts that have been bottled up for too long until it stinks. And it's an amazing experience to behold.

Somewhere in the middle I'd say and this allows me to enjoy a wide variety of shows which I wouldn't have if I leant more towards any side.
Though I still am very selective about the genre of anime, with Horror, Thriller, Mystery, Historical, Sci-Fi and Fantasy (preferably one without video-game elements) being the most preferred ones.
That said, all I want from what I watch is to entertain me with decent characters, plot, production values and I'd have no problem at all. Of course if those aspects end up being really good, then that's great. I'll have something I'll remember for years!.

I've tended to find a lot of the "classic and best of the best" type anime underwhelming, so instead poke around the edges of the weird stuff and the so-called trashy seasonals where my expectations are a lot more measured and likely to be met or exceeded. From friends I know in their 30s I think it is more about stopping caring about yelling opinions to the four winds.
They all keep their standards and if you ask seriously they answer seriously but most of the times they just act silly about everything whether its positive or negatively (to the point it is hard to gauge what they actually like/dislike). They just operate in that if they enjoy something they don't care of what others think.
[Noiseman Sound Insect](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1978/Onkyo_Seimeitai_Noiseman) is a gorgeous movie with the coolest aesthetic. I recommend checking out other works by Kouji Morimoto (he directed the famous Magnetic Rose).

[Omoi no Kakera](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32190/Omoi_no_Kakera) is set in post-earthquake Fukushima and portrays a people in recovery by focusing on one girl. It's one of the major shorts by Fukushima Gainax, and director Asao Yoshinori, who has put out many works about the disaster at Fukushima.
eminence in shadow is such a confusing show to me. for most shows, I generally can tell you what I like about them or what I don't...that isn't to say that they are objectively good or bad, just that I generally feel like I have a sense of why they work

I like most of it but I found I disliked the character writing for the arc with the hero challenge. 3 Episodes of girls fighting over their breasts. As soon as the arc ended they started having larger personalities again. It was such an uneven arc.

This description perfectly encapsulates why I like Date A Live as much as I do. I feel like I might have even used some of the same phrasing to describe it in the past. And it's genuinely hard to put into words what makes it "special" because, on a surface level and just from basic description, it's a show that should simply be bad. But when something does comedy well, drama well, action well, suspense well, romance well, without massively faltering in any of those aspects, the whole thing just clicks together. If a show knows what it wants to be (and what it wants to be is many different things) but then largely successfully executes on multiple aspects, that makes it stand out to me much more than a show that tries to be just one or two things.
(I like Eminence, too, but I fell off the subs when the dub was announced and I'm waiting for a significant amount of dub episodes to release before I re-invest in the series from the start.)

I'd say if you're curious, you should watch through the end of episode 5. I thought the show started pretty rough, but by ep 4 it finds its feet and ep 5 has, well, a moment. by that point I think it's pretty clear if you vibe with it or not. if you vibe with what it's offering, the rest of the show is just sort of more of that in different satisfying configurations. if it doesn't vibe, I don't think any of those configurations will vibe
the show IS a goddamn waifu factory though, and has some top tier ojous (and others too!). but honestly I'd say the most annoying part of the show is how much I wish I could spend more time with pretty much every woman in the show. the show casually introduces side characters that could easily carry a lesser seasonal! sigh!!!

I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if I hadn't been aware it was a self-satirizing show from the start, and that everything was being played for tongue-in-cheek humor. If nothing else it let me have a lot of fun with the way it refused to stick to one genre for the first bunch of episodes.

Ha, a point of divergent opinion! I really enjoyed the start, although I was in the mood for its constant gear shifting. As for episode count, I should have given a ballpark for where I stopped, it was around Episode 11, or just after the big arena fight for the start of Goddess Trial arc. It wasn't so much that I wasn't enjoying it, that was just when I went to watching Sarasa and only Sarasa for a bit, if memory serves.

Truer words have never been spoken! They all absolutely steal the scene whenever they appear, in whatever capacity that might be. It's a bit like Date-A-Live, where the answer to who is Best Girl is ~~Kurumi~~ ~~Tohka~~ ~~whoever is on screen~~ no, actually it's Kurumi... maybe I should have chosen a better comparison point.
Either way it's great at delivering the charm. I wasn't expecting to like Sherry so much given how much sheer appeal Alexia has, but the show managed to convert me pretty hard lol

Thread's a day old so I'm gonna guess only you will see this but I just have to mention that in all my years of anime watching, I've only ever felt like "Yeah this character is cool enough that I'm going to purchase a figure of them" exactly three times. One of those figures is Kurumi.
She is definitely one of the most intriguing characters in the medium, but perhaps more interestingly she just gets more interesting rather than less as her initial mystery is revealed.

Kurumi is definitely one of my favorite complicated girls. She actually has her own spin-off too, as well as her own focus OVA. Even then it takes her four full seasons to reveal her true power as a best girl.
Caught upto S4 of DAL a few months ago and it was a nice return to form after a troubling S3. And that Kurumi backstory should definitely bring back more of those lapsed DAL fans.

It’s killing me I can’t remember the name of this anime. The MC is human and ends up going to school in the spirit world. Where he’s only accepted by a few people. If u want a fun ecchi show, try Killing Bites. It knows it is not a deep story but plays into that fact. It follows a human animal hybrid girl who fights in matches against others like herself for companies to rule the Japanese markets. She is part human and part Honey Badger. The premise is kinda like Netflix's Kengan Ashura, where fighters compete for companies. It's full of violence and gore. Each character that fights is a different animal. The ecchii part comes from the girl characters. They never full transform into animals but more the ears and tails. (Cloths get shreaded in fights) the guys turn full into animals like a dude is part lion so when he changes he looks like a bi pedal lion not much human

Gangsta is a cool one if you liked Black Lagoon. It's about a couple of guys that do odd jobs but mainly revolves around them being hitmen. The world has people with gifted physical abilities like extra strength or speed that are used as mercenariesor hited help. It follows 2 guys one normal person and his partner who is one of the special people who also happens to be deaf. Hellsing Ultimate is another good gory show. It involves a secret British organization that hunts vampires with the help of there own vampire. Drifters is set up like an isekai. It takes actual historical figures and summons them to a fantasy style world. They get separated into 2 categories called drifters and ends. Drifters want to help humans, and ends want to end humanity. Some famous people that history looks in a positive light were wrongly killed in our world and decide to destroy humanity for it. Like Joan of Arc who fought for France was burned at the stake when she lost to the British so she wants to destroy the world

Decently good. One of the less tropey akward/dense teenage romances.
I like it. But I like it specifically because it is a neverending trainwreck of characters who are all shitty, selfish people constantly doing shitty, selfish things and then stressing themselves and each other out with their ever-growing web of bullshit. It's not a series you watch to have someone to root for. It's a series you watch to get some schadenfreude hits from a bunch of people being miserable. They're all awful and they all deserve each other. I enjoy watching them squirm.

Demon Slayer is the only anime that I won't let myself watch on a smaller screen. It's so bright and colorful that watching it on my phone or even my tablet feels like im watching a standard def version of the show. I have a really nice OLED TV at home that really amplifies the experience. Add to that a nice sound bar and it makes a world of difference. Are there any other shows/movies that should be watched on a bigger better screen?
Violet Evergarden is definitely worth watching in the best possible quality.
To be fair I think I'd say virtually all KyoAni shows qualify here.

Is Log Horizon worth the watch? I have heard good things about it. I'm worried its gonna start off strong like SAO did but then get dumb. Since they are both based on people getting stuck in a game. Please try to keep it as spoiler free as you can since I haven't seen it
It does not get dumb, as in it does not start suffering from increasing threats changing the rules (too badly) but it does suffer from pacing problems. And the childrens arcs can be a tad too basic for too long to maintain fun. But the central cast and events of the world remain engaging.
Depends on what you're looking for in it. If you liked the stakes of SAO then they're quite different in Log Horizon. Log Horizon is about the exploration of what it means to be stuck there, and how that has and is constantly changing the world and those in it. It's not just about getting out or defeating a villain, it's a much truer adventure in that sense, and that side of it only gets stronger each arc
Ok that sounds pretty good. I wanted something that had a good story that builds upon its world.
I enjoyed it and thought the second season was much better than the general reception on a rewatch. It takes more of a look at how society as a whole deals with living in a world of game mechanics compared to SAO's focus on clearing floors for the most part (at least with the early story). Might get a little muddled at times but I like how it asks and attempts to answer questions like "Are NPCs just as real as other people now?"
I liked SAO when it consistently had a threat of death and it was all built with that in mind, but then when they went to alfhiem, there were no consequences at all.
Log Horizon has no threat of death as everyone respawns, so if you're looking specifically for that then it won't be the right choice. It's great in a lot of other ways though.
No I was just giving that as an example on why I thought SAO went down hill. That was a big focus point in that show. It doesnt need to have that as a mechanic for me
The first season is fairly well-regarded. The second season is pretty disliked. I didn't even like the first season, honestly. Too much "look at how smart I am, I will show you how smart I am by over-narrating everything while I outwit people using basic reasoning because I am so smart." On top of that it feels the need to over-explain MMORPG game terminology and mechanics. Which always felt weird to me because I'd *assume* the people watching the show already know this sort of thing. Is the Complete Series DVD wtih 720 episodes english dub legit? Has 36 discs. I see it on Ebay, but that's putting around 7 hours and 40 minutes of video on each disc. The last time I bought a single DVD with 4 movies on it, was like watching colored oatmeal. It was really bad, and my 4k player could hardly upscale it. I had no idea all 4 movies would be on a single disc, when I bought it. Colored oatmeal might be an exaggeration, but not by much.

Heyy all, I’m looking for anime movie recommendations that will move me to tears. At the moment, I haven’t seen anything that can top or even come close to the way Your Name turned me into a complete mess the first time I watched it, and even on subsequent watches, I still tear up. I‘ve watched Weathering With You and A Silent Voice, which ..almost.. took me there, but neither really landed the emotional climax for me. I’ve also seen Your Lie in April which I actually found to be a chore, I’m not generally a fan of romance anime and found this one tedious. Your Name just resonated with me so much and I’ve been trying to chase that high ever since. I need something that’s either completely devastating or utterly beautiful, but maybe I need to accept that nothing will come close to Your Name for me? I have “In This Corner of the World” and “Grave of the Fireflies” currently on my radar.

Out of what everyone has recommended, Maquia and Wolf Children hit hardest for me. It’s a bit of a chore, but if you can get through Clannad, Clannad: Afterstory’s middle to ending parts are pretty much guaranteed to wreck someone. The Bunny Girl movie made me pretty emotional but I don’t think I cried.
Wolf Children is great for this. Also really telling you to prio In This Corner of the World, its also great.
Josee the Tiger and the Fish was an emotional one for me, and I watched it right around the same time as Your Name. It's on Crunchyroll, sub and dub.

Those are both very emotional movies for sure, I haven't watched Grave of the fireflies yet, but I feel like In this corner of the world does not elicit that kind of ugly cry, it has a more sombre and subdued style. Have you tried older Shinkai movies? Garden of words is the only one I haven't watched yet and I feel like it's the one that has a higher chance of being what you're looking for among those. Other movies that may potentially work are Maquia or I want to eat your pancreas.

As someone who also sobs at Your Name even on rewatches, Garden of Words doesn't hit that hard. I have a deeply personal connection to the story of GoW, but it's just not that same kind of emotion that triggers a crying outburst in me.

There are three fanservice heavy shows this season. Those are: - My Life as Inukai-san's Dog - Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister - Ayakashi Triangle The first one is basically soft core beastiality, and the last one is from a manga from the same creator as To-Love Ru (though you'll unfortunately have to wait for the BD release for the uncensored version). Onimai isn't quite as degenerate and it's not really borderline hentai, but it's very horny and it has an uncensored version.

I’m kinda just starting anime I mean I’ve watched a couple death note, kill la kill, a good chunk of naruto and my hero. I’ve only watched dub because I usually watch it late or my girlfriend is here and is dyslexic. Am I missing out by not switching to sub? I get anxious making that decision every new show I start thinking I’m missing stuff and before I start something else long like one piece I wanted to know what you think. If a shows only in sub I wouldn’t mind watching it if it was good .

There's many shows that only have a sub, and there's been plenty discussions about their respective quality. In the end, if the show you wanna watch has a dub and that's how you wanna watch it then there's rarely much reason not to do so.

Hi reddit. I am looking for an anime i have watched in the past but i only remember one specific scene from it right now. The striking thing i remember is that a girl was reading "being and time" by martin heidegger. The main character (m) and the person reading were in the school library or some sort of library. They were both younger (under 30) and i think it was some kind of romance anime. At least it had elements of romance in it. The show also had a sadder tone to it. I remember really liking this show and would like to see it again but somehow i forgot everything else about it. If this belongs in any other thread please inform me, this is my first post.
How far in the past are we talking when you first saw it? Because apart from the specific book title the scene could have easily been something from any number of different series, even including things like Stepmom's Daughter, but that show is quite recent. Or there's Oresuki, much of which takes place in the school's library. Or Hyouka which has more than a few library scenes, and even the clubroom has a lot of bookshelves. Without saying where you watched it, can you remember if it was via legal or illegal means? The only reason I ask is because once in a while fansubbers might screw around with "memesubs". Official translations *usually* won't outright change the name of a book when the title is printed on the screen, but fansubbers might. Either way, knowing might help narrow things down.

hi daily thread Do any of the following seasonals get substantially 'better' after their first episode- MagiRevo, Mononogatari, Beasts of Ars, Kaina and Nier? I dropped them not because I disliked them but simply because I don't have enough time this season so I'm only watching stuff that I'm really enjoying. Wondering if I should transfer them to on-hold list instead..
Mononogatari, Ars, and MagiRevo. All above-average but just safe and predictable, nothing deep. Nier - a bit of a different story than the game. Kaina - it's anime original, so who knows where it may end up, but story is at least interesting.
Ars has a decently endearing cast, but it's still in the 'character gathering' phase of its plot, so if you want something with a stronger hook it might not do it for you. I think that Mononogatari has had the best plot glowup from a lackluster episode 1- but still looks drab, so if visuals are a major element of enjoyment you might be better skipping out on this one.
Curious about Mononogatari—does the MC get less insufferable? Or is he just doomed to be gloomy.
i think the first episode definitely portrayed him as way more of an edgelord than he is at heart - but he's been making some pretty swift progress. I'd say he's quite a bit less gloomy and insufferable as of the current episode than he was in the premiere. Whether or not that shift is enough for your tastes is up to you - but there has undoubtedly been progress on that front.
Hi daily commenter. I cannot recommend MagiRevo enough. Fantastic writing and characterization and visuals. Giant Beasts of Ars is kinda interesting and fleshing out its world but I’m not sure if it is worth watching. NieR is delayed as others have said. But it gets immensely better after the first episode. Whenever it resumes, I think you should absolutely catch up.
Hi, fellow daily commenter. Everyone says magirevo is great, fine I'll give it another shot! I really liked the visuals but I didn't particularly like the characters based on episode 1 at least.
MagiRevo had a great first episode IMO, but it's continued to get more interesting with each successive one. It's probably my favorite show of the season. Nier production has been suspended and is presumed to resume next season, you might as well put it on hold for now until we see if and when the new episodes come out.
Kaina is one of my favorite anime of the season, but I liked it since episode one. I will say that the world is better explored by episode 4 with more areas being shown and new characters added to the cast.
hmm out of those I am watching Tensei Oujo and Kaina, I think they stayed pretty consistent so far, as in they don't have "more" that would make you love them now if you didn't already.

MagiRevo and Kaina are both good, but they both continue to do what you’d expect them to do from their first episodes. Neither has any big surprises so far. Nier is delayed.
Nier is on an indefinite hiatus, so you can keep that on hold until it returns. It did get better after episode 1 though. And MagiRevo is a must-watch, personally
Nier really picks up episode 4 [](#hikariactually). The show itself if on hold after 3 episodes due to production delays, so theres not much point of continuing with it for now I wouldn't say Mononogatari felt any different from its premiere through 3 episodes
I have a question to ask everyone. I have been watching anime for a pretty long time now but almost everytime I finish an anime (with some exeptions) I get sad because I either didnt like the ending or because I won't get to see the characters anymore which gives me this "why did I even watch this" feeling. Of course the "journey" to the ending is always fun but what's the point if I'm sad at the end anyway. What are your opinions on this?
If the anime you are watching has an ongoing manga/novel, you could always try to read that ig

There are a lot of ways that people cope with it, but I think the most reassuring thing is that the feeling usually passes with time. If I really enjoy a series, I think it deserves giving it a bit of a introspection. What I do after finishing a series that I enjoyed is think about what the central messages and themes were, and I write them down somewhere (maybe in a discussion or rewatch thread; depends on how I'm watching it). I find that the act of organizing my thoughts and writing them down is pretty useful for remembering and processing them. Ultimately, the experience is something you can grow on; if there's something that really touches you about a series, there's something there that you can take away and keep with you.
That's not an anime thing. Any well written piece of fiction will make you a bit sad to be over since it means you won't be able to spend more time in this world with these characters. All that means is that the writers or writers did their job. The medium dosen't matter, film, tv, video games.
How is Honey and Clover if I am looking for a good romance?
It has other themes than just romance, I found it quite mature, it was one of the first anime I sat down to watch when I decided to see different things, it's good.
Watching that for the romance would likely leave you disappointed. It's a coming of age drama first and foremost.

I don't think the mediocre romance can possibly be worse than some of the ill-timed and tone deaf humor shoehorning its way into some of the higher stakes drama - but that's probably just my selective memory of all the worst moments in H&C melding together, since it's been a while.
Manga readers, what chapters doesn't Spy x Family cover? What chapter does it end on?
The anime covers all but one short story chapter (can't remember the number) through vol. 6, and the first chapter of vol. 7 (I believe that's chapter 38).
I'm so disappointed by the Eureka Seven sequel and the "movies". The original series was so damn good. Guess lightning can't strike the same place twice after all... so, anyone got any series similar to Eureka Seven in tones and themes?? Or maybe something that has a similar kind of quality? The last anime I watched that was actually great was *Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku*. -sigh-
Someone once recommended After War Gundam X to me as a "proto-Eureka Seven." It doesn't give me the exact same feeling, but it's still really good and I can definitely see how it (may have) influenced Eureka Seven. (I don't think BONES evermentioned Gundam X as an influence on E7, but the two shows share an insane amount of similarities in terms of plot, characters, etc.) It's a standalone entry, so you don't need to have seen any other Gundam series to watch it.

It's not the only time BONES was like "Hey let's take something great we did and push out a really bad and debatably completely unnecessary sequel." Darker than Black says "hello." For mecha-romance-action, take a look at [RahXephon](https://www.livechart.me/anime/4139) which is another BONES series. This one isn't talked about as much and is often derided as an Eva clone, but I found RX more palatable than Eva. (Also RX has a film but skip the shit out of it. It's recycled footage, out of order, mixed with new content, and it's pretty terrible all-around. Complete disservice to the series.) There's also [Xam'd](https://www.livechart.me/anime/3896) (again, BONES) but it's *not* a mecha series. Still has a similar spirit of adventure and style like E7 does, though.

Not much, at least not much that vibes in the same way as E7. I can toss out a Darling in the FranXX recommendation, but I'm usually giving out the advice in reverse (in other words, people who see DITF and want more like it, so I tell them to watch E7) because I think FranXX is not a very good show over-all and, at times, is a lackluster imitation of parts of E7. Though it's from the same era, it's not similar at all, but I have a bit of a soft spot for [Last Exile.](https://www.livechart.me/anime/3744) I want to reiterate that I do not think Last Exile is like Eureka Seven. However, it does have a boy and a girl going on a world-spanning adventure that has global implications, they get caught up in a power struggle involving a military force, they are "taken in" by a traveling group aboard a skyship that is run by what can best be described as an emotionally detached, occasionally abusive father surrogate, there are some romantic undertones (nowhere near as pronounced for the main characters as they are in E7) with interesting and fleshed out supporting cast, and it has an antagonist who becomes extremely fixated on the protagonists. It also has a setting that sort-of blends old and new technology, with a lot of pre-WWII aesthetic combined with improbable future technology. In E7, it's mecha and sky carriers, in LE, it's wingless aircraft and massive fantasy RPG-like sky ships.
Damn, I've seen FranXX and Last Exile. haha I'll have to make an anime list and edit my post with it. Also, I completely agree with FranXX! The anime suggestions don't have to be exactly like Eureka Seven. I'd prefer maybe similar themes, but overall, I'd just like something with that kind of carefully crafted quality.
I just finished the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. The animation was on fire and it felt like every episode added new world building elements. I really liked the concept of curses and cursed spirits and there were a variety of different types of enemies. Aoi Todo is best boy and must be protected at all costs. I thought the exchange event was fun, a good way to get some awesome fights and develop the characters more especially the ones from Kytoto. I hope we get more of MechaMaru. It wasn't a perfect show by any means. I thought some of the pacing was a bit off. It felt a bit uneven in places. And from here I will tag. [Jujutsu Kaisen] >!First off I thought the whole hiding Itadori from the others after his "death" was odd since GoJo just revealed him to them in a rather anti-climactic way. I thought maybe he would have a big damm hero moment during the exchange event but it was just a cheap gag. I also found the way they introduced characters odd. Itadori went from watching movies to focus his cursed energy to suddenly investigating a murder in a movie theater with some blond guy we never met. I had to rewatch to make sure I didn't miss something. That's not to mention all these new characters who appear during the Exchange event like Mei Mei and the miko outfit wearing woman who hates GoJo. I also wish we had gotten more with the human working with the cursed spirits. It seems like he must be one fo the three noble clans that are behind everything in the scorcer world based on his dress and mannerism. I am wondering if he is connected to the Kyoto student whose name I am not looking up to avoid spoilers. They have similar hair styles and facial structures. It looks like the could be siblings. I was also disappointed we didn't get more of Sukuna. I get he's not at full strength yet and needs more fingers but I was hoping we would see the pact made early on. There was the fight that I assume Itadori lost due to his power level at the time but we never see Sukuna take over. Also maybe don't give the fingers to the guy possessed by the guy who wants to collect the fingers!< That all being said I had a lot of fun with this show. Now onto Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Maybe some of this stuff will get expanded on in the movie.

Honestly have no idea; There should be a quiz where you answer like a few dozen questions and they put you on some spectrums (like for politics and stuff)! I tend to have strong opinions about a lot of things, but they're often uncommon/weird opinions that I don't really see being in one thing or the other (casual/elitist).
I guess closer to elitist, if only because I'm more likely to watch a show 15-40 years old than a currently airing isekai or battle shounen?
I've been called both depending on who's trying to find something to throw at me... (I consider that a good litmus test to know if the person is a casual). It feels odd to say "casual" considering I'm watching about a dozen seasonal shows, but I still think that description fits me better than "elitist". I watch a lot of anime though not as much as others, and I've started writing reviews on occasion and watching Spanish dubs for extra practice as I'm learning the language, but ultimately, I just watch what I think is fun. I have a pretty good idea by now of which genres I like, which ones I don't, and the ones I'm really picky about. At least half of the shows I watch are English dubs, but I don't mind watching with subs either. (I'd actually love to have subs when I'm trying to watch in Spanish.) I think when I started watching anime I didn’t know enough to tell what I’d like (never would have guessed I’m a romance fiend) and so I dabbled a lot in stuff that felt comfortable for a bit. Then I got a sense of what I liked and sought those out, starting from most recommended to least. Nowadays I’ll give anything a chance and try to see the best in it. If that makes me casual, then that’s me!

I guess if you absolutely forced me to choose, the answer would be elitist. I have a blog, I know far more than the average viewer about production details and staff, and I try out nearly every new seasonal anime, I don't think I can be said to be a casual fan. But I think this is a false dichotomy. I agree with the person who called themselves a "connoisseur" in spirit, though I'd like to choose a word that gives off a less pretentious air. Ultimately, I just love anime, and find myself with no real barriers to the kind of media I can like. Maybe I'm more excited for some weird artsy show than I am for the new big popular battle shounen, but at the same time, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is right next to Serial Experiments Lain in my top 10. My taste is just broad, my enjoyment comes down to my perception of quality more than any superficial signifiers like genre, demographic, age, subject matter, or art style. I can enjoy a trashy isekai or a mass appeal shounen if it's good, same as anything else, and I find myself intrigued by fetish media as a form of expression. Does the fact that I tend to find that the artsy shows have better quality and more interesting ideas make me an elitist? I feel like an "elitist" is someone who would discount all of those other kinds of works from being art in the first place rather than seek to explore and understand them as art. I find it unfitting to call myself elitist given all of this, I'm just very interested in art and thus I want to dig into it more and explore more stuff.

Yeah to an average run of the mill watcher I think almost anyone on /r/anime could be seen as more on the other side as we're on a subreddit dedicated to it.
casual. Unless we're talking stillshots being used I can't tell if animation is good or bad. I don't speak Japanese so i have no idea if a performance is good or bad. I alternate between JP and EN depending on cast, availability and if it's something i've seen previously in one language. For example I watched 2001 Fruits Basket dubbed so I was always going to watch 2009 Fruba dubbed. But I still watch JoJo subbed even with a decent dub available. I watch MHA both subbed and dubbed just to keep up with the story. On the other hand I usually have no idea about supplemental material ie drama CDs, stage plays etc. If it's not in the show then it isn't applicable.
Casual. Haven't watched that many shows and I tend to stick to genres I like. I have watched a reasonable amount of obscure stuff, which in of itself sounds elitist... Casually elitist? :)

Somewhere close to the middle, I guess? In terms of the amount of time I've spent watching anime, participating in the fandom, learning Japanese, and so forth, it would be difficult for me to call myself a 'casual', although I'm certainly not as hardcore as some people are. In terms of what I watch, I almost never watch an anime solely because it is popular and have no interest in jumping on the bandwagon of the season just for the sake of it, so I could be considered an elitist in that regard. Ultimately though, if something is well-regarded for a long time I'm eventually going to find myself in the mood for it, and I'll almost always enjoy it as well - there's really only a handful of highly rated anime that I actively disdain (and, now that I think of it, most of them are probably what would be considered 'elitist' anime anyway), so in that regard I could be considered a casual. I also don't keep up a top 10 list or have any interest in 'which is better' debates, so I suppose that is a fairly casual attitude too, although what favourites I do have probably tend more towards the elitist side, especially these days.
I still consider myself a casual since meeting my standards for fun is easy but I have come to respect some of the views of more hardcore fans, I guess 'connoisseur' like another comment mentioned is better. I have come to appreciate technical aspects of anime and sometimes it can definitely bother me when they fall flat but I won't love an anime just for visual prowess nor will I hate it if its bad. I have come to like End of Evangelion more after rewatch because of its artistic portrayal of a rather simple message. I like Kyousougiga and while I wished it was more humorous/SoL or explored some of its characters more, the visuals really elevate the zaniness of its setting and characters making fun to watch. Sonny Boy though? Looks great but *OH MY LORD ITS BORING*. Its like I come to recognize what works have more ambition and extended to other demographics so I come to respect them more, whereas with 'fast food' anime my bar is still low but once it falls off I get more critical. Anime with cute short haired genki girl? Pog, sign me up fam, I'm in. Good examples this season is Saving 80,000 Gold or Bofuri, very simple stories, sometimes looks like shit (80k having no fucking animation) but its nailing the reason I'm there. I still wished they looked better, I wished Mou Ippon had better sound design to convey impact, but they are still fun. Only thing it needs to do is keep it fun enough and I'm happy but recognizing its shortcomings helps me really differentiate anime I consider just fine and which are great and because sometimes I do want to like some anime more than I do. Then again, my reply is by far the longest so far so my point of view may be skewed, I really don't know where I land.
Part of the fun with this little exercise is that it's hard to figure out exactly where we land. I feel like we share a lot here actually with me maybe showing a bit less care for the artistic or production side of things. Sonny Boy catching some unexpected strays in these replies lol
I don’t really believe in this dichotomy, personally. I think there really is just liking what one likes and following one’s muse. Why does simply having an open mind for exploration and diverse taste have to be “elitism”? Isn’t that something anyone is capable of if they care enough about a given field to invest themselves in it? Inversely, is anything done for personal enjoyment not “casual” by nature? I think this way of thinking just creates unnecessary walls and perceived hierarchies that just make things worse and more complicated for everyone and all adjacent discourse. I apologize if this sounds a little conceited, I swear I’m trying at the opposite, but I just consider myself… someone who really loves anime, and that’s it? I try not to see casual and elitist people, and I definitely don’t see “casual” vs. “elitist” works either, just good ones. Good is good and that’s all there is.
Well this discussion isn't anything too serious and it's more of a spectrum of how you consume or appreciate anime, I wouldn't get too hung up on the buzzwords I used and think of them more as a guidepost. Both terms do have negative connotations to them but that wasn't the point, was more to see which side of anime you lean towards either in the shows you tend to enjoy or what you look for in anime. Everyone has their own definitions and perceptions so it's neat to see, we all obviously love good anime but digging deeper in what makes an anime "good" for us is the interesting part.

If I'm forced to choose between the two, I'm probably more of an elitist than a casual, but I don't like it. I see myself as a connoisseur rather than an elitist. I know the difference between ambitious art and mass-produced entertainment. I recognize the names of directors, actors, and other staff. I consume a lot of anime from a wide range of genres and demographics. But I don't necessarily look down on any category of anime for lacking ambition or technical prowess. Just like how I can enjoy both an imported craft beer and a Miller High Life, I can enjoy a Kyousougiga and a Visual Prison.
As I grew older, definitely more casual. I don't have the time, energy or motivation to make other people care about the anime I care about.

Elitist means something different for everyone but for me personally, it feels like I'm firmly on the elitist side though I wish I was casual. Anime as a medium is very hard to stomach for me when it comes to certain things. It makes me really spiteful towards many popular titles and genres that I'm simply unable to enjoy. I like chart pandering products in any other medium aside from anime. Arianna Grande? Bangers. Stupid action movie with The Rock? Fine way to lose an evening. Assassin's Creed 23? Love me some map clutter. But your average isekai? I end up loathing everything about it even though I want to enjoy it. And then I watch some convoluted masturbatory art nonsense like Sonny Boy and that thing moves me to tears. And it's not to say that I don't enjoy popular things like JJK or Demon Slayer but it doesn't leave the same impact that I wish it would.

Is it necessarily insecurity? I get where you're coming from, just because a bunch of people don't like something, or they think it's, I guess convoluted/superfluous, doesn't mean that you should follow that, and put it down if it worked for you. In fact, the Elitism guide 101 says you should own these opinions, which is probably the only good piece of advice in the guide. But on the other hand, you can connect with something while perceiving some issues or even seeing it as "convoluted masturbatory art nonsense" in *your* own eyes, not public opinion. I get why people might think of Sonny Boy that way, I disagree, but I think of Vlad Love that way. And I love both of them. Vlad Love, especially in its latter half, is the creative anime equivalent of watching an old man rub one out (for hours, as old men usually require). It doesn't make sense, it doesn't even attempt to do so, it throws so much bullshit at the wall, and it doesn't wait for anything to stick, just filling the room with absurd thoughts that have been bottled up for too long until it stinks. Somewhere in the middle I'd say and this allows me to enjoy a wide variety of shows which I wouldn't have if I leant more towards any side. Though I still am very selective about the genre of anime, with Horror, Thriller, Mystery, Historical, Sci-Fi and Fantasy (preferably one without video-game elements) being the most preferred ones. That said, all I want from what I watch is to entertain me with decent characters, plot, production values and I'd have no problem at all. Of course if those aspects end up being really good, then that's great. I'll have something I'll remember for years!.

From friends I know in their 30s I think it is more about stopping caring about yelling opinions to the four winds. They all keep their standards and if you ask seriously they answer seriously but most of the times they just act silly about everything whether its positive or negatively (to the point it is hard to gauge what they actually like/dislike). They just operate in that if they enjoy something they don't care of what others think.
Probably more casual. There's some niche stuff here and there, but my favorites tend to be among popular/well-known things.
Between casual and elitist I'd see myself squarely on the casual side. Between casual and hardcore would be somewhere more in the middle.

[Shanshui Qing](https://myanimelist.net/anime/13755/Shanshui_Qing), gorgeous watercolor art. [Omoi no Kakera](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32190/Omoi_no_Kakera) is set in post-earthquake Fukushima and portrays a people in recovery by focusing on one girl. It's one of the major shorts by Fukushima Gainax, and director Asao Yoshinori, who has put out many works about the disaster at Fukushima.

eminence in shadow is such a confusing show to me. for most shows, I generally can tell you what I like about them or what I don't...that isn't to say that they are objectively good or bad, just that I generally feel like I have a sense of why they work eminence in shadow feels like a show that absolutely shouldn't work as well as it does, but somehow it just ends up being so much more than the sum of its parts. it just does what it does...in such a fun way. I'm really going to miss it when it's over, probably more than shows that were by all means better but just...didn't hit that mix of hype, satire, humor, and waifu...
Try the manga, the anime is based off of the LNs, which have pretty meh writing and are more like self-aware isekai. At least the manga is a comedy.
I like most of it but I found I disliked the character writing for the arc with the hero challenge. 3 Episodes of girls fighting over their breasts. As soon as the arc ended they started having larger personalities again. It was such an uneven arc.

This description perfectly encapsulates why I like Date A Live as much as I do. I feel like I might have even used some of the same phrasing to describe it in the past. And it's genuinely hard to put into words what makes it "special" because, on a surface level and just from basic description, it's a show that should simply be bad. But when something does comedy well, drama well, action well, suspense well, romance well, without massively faltering in any of those aspects, the whole thing just clicks together. If a show knows what it wants to be (and what it wants to be is many different things) but then largely successfully executes on multiple aspects, that makes it stand out to me much more than a show that tries to be just one or two things. (I like Eminence, too, but I fell off the subs when the dub was announced and I'm waiting for a significant amount of dub episodes to release before I re-invest in the series from the start.)

oh man that last ep magirevo was *something* for eminence, honestly it's such a weird show, and a very hard show to recommend. for every person that vibes with it, there are 2 that don't. the people that vibe with it vibe *hard*, but the people who don't vibe with it just don't get it at all and put it solidly in the "isekai trash that is ruining anime" bucket I'd say if you're curious, you should watch through the end of episode 5. I thought the show started pretty rough, but by ep 4 it finds its feet and ep 5 has, well, a moment. by that point I think it's pretty clear if you vibe with it or not. if you vibe with what it's offering, the rest of the show is just sort of more of that in different satisfying configurations. if it doesn't vibe, I don't think any of those configurations will vibe the show IS a goddamn waifu factory though, and has some top tier ojous (and others too!). but honestly I'd say the most annoying part of the show is how much I wish I could spend more time with pretty much every woman in the show. the show casually introduces side characters that could easily carry a lesser seasonal! sigh!!!

I recall it being confirmed at the end of S4, but that feels like so long ago lol Kurumi is definitely one of my favorite complicated girls. She actually has her own spin-off too, as well as her own focus OVA. Even then it takes her four full seasons to reveal her true power as a best girl.
Caught upto S4 of DAL a few months ago and it was a nice return to form after a troubling S3. And that Kurumi backstory should definitely bring back more of those lapsed DAL fans.
