After years of putting it off, I finally got my first credit card. All because I'm tired of using a metrocard and I don't want to use my bank card on the OMNY for the subway. So I want a credit card to tap and use instead.
That was also extremely simple. It's almost worrying how easy it was to be approved. It took all of 60 seconds from applying to approval.
[](#azusalaugh)
> That was also extremely simple. It's almost worrying how easy it was to be approved. It took all of 60 seconds from applying to approval.
You do know how credit card companies make money, right?
By charging interest out the ass on people who don't pay off their bill every month. It only benefits them to give a card to anyone who asks for one knowing that a portion of them won't be responsible with it.
and if you're and USAjin you don't even get that fucked off by interest. Here I've seen 100%+ APR cards. Heck, mine is at a "reasonable" 65%, pray the gods I will always be able to pay it in full.
But I have to get to and from work. The MTA already stole $120 from me today when I tried to fill my metrocard and it took my money without giving me the rides. So I have to get that refunded now hopefully.
Japan's history is kinda wack. We took like 3/4 of a semester to study in China until about year ~600AD (Sui dynasty), meanwhile now it seems like in three paragraphs I already got to the Kofun period in Japan which was around that time.
Bruh, Japan's history isn't that deep like China it seems. And they jump straight into Buddhism and stuff without much geopolitical stuff. Hmm...
Yeah it definitely seems like the early stages of Japanese history aren't covered very heavily. Even within Japanese media, like I've never seen an anime that featured any era of Japanese history earlier than the Heian period.
Yeah, Heian is the earliest time period you see Japanese history depicted usually.
The most of the Joman period I see are it being referenced for emphasis of something being really old/outdated and the dogu dolls you see things reference.
[](#harukathonk)
I'm not really sure why, either not much has happened, or there just wasn't much writing from that time. Latter sounds plausible, but still why?
It feels like China had their shit together much earlier, as we already have writings as early as the Zhou dynasty (1000BC) and maybe even some from Shang (1600BC)
As far as I know the Jomon and Yayoi cultures did not have any indigenous formal writing system, so all there is to go on are archaeological records and the occasional Chinese record.
> Yeah it definitely seems like the early stages of Japanese history aren't covered very heavily
What don't they want us to know? WHAT ARE THEY HIDING?
[](#rengethink)
That's because there's not much geopolitical stuff regarding Japan in the first place at that time. It was on the edge of the region and not relevant to anything going on in the area outside of some minor involvement in Korea's Three Kingdom period.
Yeah, so it seems. China's area was much bigger, had way more people, and had a lot more stuff going on there.
So while the people in Japan sat on their asses in their small tribes, over the sea they had established countries with governments already fighting. It's pretty amazing tbh
It's kinda like how Britons were just chilling in their swamps when the Romans rolled up with their fancy roads and aqueducts. The hallmarks of civilization like writing and organized and complex social structures developed earlier in the core of the Eurasian continent and gradually spread to the fringes.
But that's not to say everything originated from a single geographic location, lots of different cultures developed things independently at different times.
3/4 of a semester up to Sui?
To be fair. The Sui, Tang and Song dynasties are the turning points of Chinese history. The culture and everyday life then probably would have been shocking to anyone today, especially considering how Chinese culture is like now.
Yeah, this test was up to the Northern Song Dynasty. Second semester should bring us up to Mao Zedong.
They had quite a lot of stuff to discuss. Various philosophies (Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Legalism, etc.) as well as various emperors, generals, philosophers, geopolitical stuff, changes throughout the dynasties... Yeah
I am actually way more interested in Northern Song and before, and I would definitely have smoked the test for this one.
The second part though, is depressing. Lots of different narratives, a lot of geopoliticking. I don't like this part.
The closer it is to current times, the more you see narratives that do not agree with each other. The closer it is to now, the more Rule 2 you will see. Which is why I hate reading about the Republic of China between 1911 and 1945. It's is all Rule 2. Both sides insist their narrative is right.
On the other hand, the further back you go into history, the more you will see how China was and how different it is today, which is fascinating. For one, the infamous kowtowing to the emperor thing wasn't a custom until after the Yuan too. Women actually held political power up till the Tang, on their own accord. Foreigners could also be involved in politics, and there were Japanese working in the Tang political scene. This is a very marked contrast to the Chinese court that most people have, and a huge contrast to modern society as well. I would rather read up more on Tang and Song and everything before than all the Rule 2 stuff that is predominant in later history.
Tagging /u/theangryeditor
A lot of changes occurred over time, from one era to the next. However, conceptualizing it as some sort of ideal past vs degenerate present is a common pitfall when studying history. It sounds to me that you seem to idealize the Sui-Tang era somewhat, especially through a modern liberal lens, in contrast to modern Chinese history which you seem to perceive as somewhat irredeemable. If that brings you satisfaction on a personal level that's fine, but I would caution against such an approach to history in general, and as a platform for one's politics.
My soapboxing aside, yeah the Tang period is very fascinating. The court was more metropolitan partly due to trade along the silk route, the status of women was certainly better than the Song and later, and culture flourished quite a bit. The South was integrated into the empire and Buddhism became ever more widespread. It was also when the civil service exams really kicked into gear. So really it had things you don't usually associate with imperial Chinese courts, yet at the same time it was the when many other classic features were established.
Agreed with the first point. I do agree that I do idealise it somewhat. Of course, the periods after are also impressive, but the historical narratives for those periods are also the most complicated and difficult for me to read, partly because of how much obvious whitewashing of the narratives there is, not only by people in recent times but also by the scholars of that era.
And yes, the more I read on Tang China, the more I understand why we call ourselves the Tang people (apart from the Han people). It is certainly a very impressive time in history, and a real pity we don't see much from that period anymore today.
Damn, that's unfortunate.
I'm not well versed in that second half yet, but I assumed most of the yucky stuff was due to Mao Zedong's time.
I guess the roots run deep.
I've also seen that despite learning history, it's hard not to look at it at modern eyes and compare it to my own beliefs.
Yeah, go in to the second half with a more open mind, and try to understand some of the history there. People will agree on some of the facts in there, but not some of the narratives.
I also read very recently, that the Ming dynasty had one emperor who does not have a harem. Like, almost everyone else did it, but he didn't. He literally went to do a 9 to 9 job as an emperor! This guy, is a normie! I don't think you will ever read up about him, but when you imagine it it really feels like that guy is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So I asked about headphones a while ago...
What about mechanical keyboards? If I wanna look into getting a nice, simple (probably affordable) mechanical keyboard, which brands should I be looking at?
I don't need loads of bells and whistles or anything, and I had LED/RGBs so those aren't required.
my first one was a simply Cherry MX 3.0 with black switches that I've used for over 5 years and it's still working fine. Don't think you can swap caps with that one though
No idea about anything but the basic concept.
Honestly, if they sell like, a demo thing where you try different switches, that'd probably suit me better, and I can just buy a new keyboard for freshness sake.
To be fair I'm not the most knowledgeable person on the topic, in fact I'm still using the first mechanical keyboard I bought on a friend's suggestion "to try and feel" and since it's working fine I have no reason at the moment to get anything more "advanced".
The main thing you have to look into are indeed the switches, as they determine the entire feel of the keyboard: how much noise they make, whether they give you a tactile feedback, and how much force you need to press them. ([example of a page listing a bunch of switches and their properties](https://ergodox-ez.com/pages/keyswitches))
Maybe you can go to a hardware shop and ask if you can try them out? If that's an option, that would probably be the best.
If you need it specifically, make sure it has some properties like n-rollover, anti-ghosting, etc. I have no idea how much common they are tbh, but may as well mention them [](#yuishrug)
When I looked to buy one, I feel like it's gonna be hard to find one without LEDs lol, but generally they have various blinking patterns and possibly customiseable ones, mine has a preset that's just no LEDs so I'm using that one [](#azusalaugh).
For brands I got nothing though
Not gonna be here for lock later so

So I was looking at the best-selling manga in history, and I found out that Demon Slayer has more sales per volume than both One Piece and Naruto (6.52 million vs. 4.97 million and 3.23 million). I start to wonder how the hell Demon Slayer outsold both of them in sales per volume.
Demon Slayer is very, very, very, very popular in Japan.
But yeah, it's newer, meaning it's gotten to grab hold of a larger audience from the jump. It's also shorter, meaning there's a lower barrier to entry and sales can be more concentrated.
oh yeah, the Demon Slayer popularity exploded out of nowhere, slayed the Shounen God King One Piece. It is absolutely insane. I just wonder if Demon Slayer ended up being another Yokai Watch
Engage Run 2 update.
Up to chapter 10. This run uses the DLC, still on Hard/Classic but with fixed growths. Here's the characters I used so far:
- Alear in Dragon Child, currently holding the Edelgard bracelet. Not sure where I want to bracelet to go eventually. Will probably turn Alear into a Bow Knight so that I use a new class while retaining swords
- Alfred, promoted to Avenir. Gave him a Speedwing from the DLC just to make him better, he's pretty good.
- Celine, Alfred, Yunaka, and Alcryst in their base classes, doing what they normally do.
- Anna, who is now an Axe Mage Knight. She was powerleveled using Micaiah's ring.
- Jean, who is an Axe/Lance Wyvern Knight, also using the Tiki Emblem although most of his levels so far have been without her. I picked this class because the class growths are kinda insane. I've used Wyvern Knight before, but I figured it'd be nice to make a stat monster.
- Citrinne with the Olwen Dire Thunder ring, which I save scummed for. Totally worth it.
- Amber, the latest recruit who I eventually plan on turning into Halberdier. I'll use a Paladin eventually.
Of note, everyone here has Lineage from Edelgard (+20% exp for only 150 SP, what a deal) and everyone except for Citrinne, Amber, and Alcryst has Canter. I actually could have gotten Canter onto Amber if I didn't immediately buy Lineage, he starts with 800 SP already.

By having me spend $5 a day on subway rides?
By charging interest out the ass on people who don't pay off their bill every month. It only benefits them to give a card to anyone who asks for one knowing that a portion of them won't be responsible with it.
and if you're and USAjin you don't even get that fucked off by interest. Here I've seen 100%+ APR cards. Heck, mine is at a "reasonable" 65%, pray the gods I will always be able to pay it in full.
Fine. I won't go crazy on the gacha then. [](#finethen) ^^Not ^^like ^^I ^^was ^^planning ^^that ^^anyway.
Yes, you've already fallen into their trap you fool.
But I have to get to and from work. The MTA already stole $120 from me today when I tried to fill my metrocard and it took my money without giving me the rides. So I have to get that refunded now hopefully.
This is how they get you into the endless cycle of paying the MTA so you can go to work to earn money to pay off the MTA.
That'll be in a few months when the raise the fares again above what work will pay for.
They *do* want you to spend your money through them, after all. They'll give credit cards to a ham sandwich.
Luckily for them, I will be using it every single work day to get to and from work.
Yeah, that's what I remember as well.
> Yeah it definitely seems like the early stages of Japanese history aren't covered very heavily What don't they want us to know? WHAT ARE THEY HIDING? [](#rengethink)
Ancient anime tiddies
Yeah, it's interesting to see how various countries/empires develop over time alongside each other
3/4 of a semester up to Sui?
More than before? [](#schemingsaten) Although as we get closer to today's time I guess it does get more of "China"'s image
Well the culture in any place 1400 years ago would be shocking to anyone from the modern day.

So I asked about headphones a while ago... What about mechanical keyboards? If I wanna look into getting a nice, simple (probably affordable) mechanical keyboard, which brands should I be looking at? I don't need loads of bells and whistles or anything, and I had LED/RGBs so those aren't required.
[You might want to try out a switch sampler.](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mechanical+switch+sampler&crid=RN42ODPSI8UR)
my first one was a simply Cherry MX 3.0 with black switches that I've used for over 5 years and it's still working fine. Don't think you can swap caps with that one though
I never liked mechanical keyboards. Too many clickings
That's what I'd be worried about. But when I go to the pc store it's so fun to click the keyboard buttons!
Is it your first one, or do you already know what are you looking for (for example, in term of switches) and just asking about the brand?
([example of a page listing a bunch of switches and their properties](https://ergodox-ez.com/pages/keyswitches)) Maybe you can go to a hardware shop and ask if you can try them out? If that's an option, that would probably be the best. If you need it specifically, make sure it has some properties like n-rollover, anti-ghosting, etc. I have no idea how much common they are tbh, but may as well mention them [](#yuishrug) When I looked to buy one, I feel like it's gonna be hard to find one without LEDs lol, but generally they have various blinking patterns and possibly customiseable ones, mine has a preset that's just no LEDs so I'm using that one [](#azusalaugh). For brands I got nothing though

New normies, probably
oh yeah, the Demon Slayer popularity exploded out of nowhere, slayed the Shounen God King One Piece. It is absolutely insane. I just wonder if Demon Slayer ended up being another Yokai Watch

Well, in the first place, the size of the manga market has grown.
Engage Run 2 update. Up to chapter 10. This run uses the DLC, still on Hard/Classic but with fixed growths. Here's the characters I used so far: - Alear in Dragon Child, currently holding the Edelgard bracelet. Not sure where I want to bracelet to go eventually. Will probably turn Alear into a Bow Knight so that I use a new class while retaining swords - Alfred, promoted to Avenir.
