Gamerunglued

Does anyone know who was responsible for the [OP for Chillin' in my 30's After Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army?](https://animethemes.moe/anime/kaiko_sareta_ankoku_heishi_30_dai_no_slow_na_second_life/OP) This is fucking gorgeous and very well animated, and the show itself is just... not. I don't think I've ever seen such a massive disparity between how the show looks and how its OP looks, and I would love to know why this is.

DragonsOnOurMountain

The OP specifically was outsourced to Bibury Animation Studios and was done mostly in-house there (For those that can read Japanese: it's the OP制作 credit in the OP under オープニングスタッフ that lists Bibury)

Gamerunglued

Ah, that would explain it. Just browsed the credits myself to confirm, was simply too lazy to attempt it before, haha. Though I wouldn't have known it was done in-house either way. Thanks.

alotmorealots

SB can be a bit of cheaty way to check on these things: https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/215127 They credit the OP AniDir as: Masayuki Nonaka ( https://www.sakugabooru.com/post?tags=masayuki_nonaka / https://myanimelist.net/people/21301/Masayuki_Nonaka ) , although it's worth noting it's community based so it's not always accurate. ANN sometimes has full breakdowns when there are differing episode credits (not in this case though): https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=26097 > how the show looks and how its OP looks There are a bunch of animators who are almost OP / ED specialists but I don't have any names to hand. [Dolls Frontline](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMBRGPOJ4lU) had a pretty big disparity too. You can see the specific OP and ED credits in the ANN entry this time: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=23960 When you look at Kentaro Waki's https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=101598 credits, you can see they usually work as DirPhoto and only occasionally do OP animation.

Gamerunglued

I know I could have looked at ANN and Sakugabooru, I was just feeling too lazy and thought I'd get people to do it for me, haha. There are some "OP specialists" of sorts, but typically they also have direction or animation direction work as well, thinking of guys like Masashi Ishihama and Shingo Yamashita. I figured maybe whoever did this OP was similar and I wanted to know their name so I could look out for them, it has such lovely lighting and compositing.

Cantankerous-Bean

Exporting Japanese only anime and figurines / collectibles. Is it ok to advertise that here ? Just a small operation between friends, but there is so much here that you cant get anywhere else. We try to find people that want some help and we go into shops / online and see what we can find for you . Website is being built in english

Verzwei

> Is it ok to advertise that here ? Nope. If you'd read over our [rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/rules#wiki_do_not_sell_things) you'd see that we expressly prohibit the sale or advertisement of goods or services here.

Cantankerous-Bean

I saw that, but i'm trying to work on a personal level with people. There would be a website, but most is done through we-chat. If i was allowed to just talk to some people we can ask them questions on what they like and give them suggestions. Seem quite cordial imo, its very casual and kind of a hangout with the people we have already. If some people would like to talk to me, i thought it was ok. Its just me and some friends

Verzwei

How personal or impersonal you think your service is doesn't matter, we don't allow people to profit from the subreddit community, nor do we allow people to promote or advertise anything with the intention of profit or resale. There are already established Japanese storefronts that sell and ship internationally, like [AmiAmi.](https://www.amiami.com/eng/)

Cantankerous-Bean

I mean the its not just me that gets something out of this, but i'll let it go

Verzwei

Dude we can discuss this until we're both blue in the face. At the end of the day, we don't allow users to advertise here. We don't care how you try to argue for it, we don't allow it and we won't allow it. If you want to advertise on Reddit, then you need to [follow up with Reddit itself.](https://www.redditforbusiness.com/)

Cantankerous-Bean

ok thanks :)

Silver52963

Im trying to find an anime that used to be on Toonami (in the late 90's - early 2000's) where an android is the main character and doesn't realize he's an android at first (I think) and at one point sits down next to a man with an acoustic guitar and asks if he can try claiming to not know how to play, when the man hands it to him, he starts playing like a seasoned pro. I'm trying to figure out what anime this was because its what first inspired me to pick up a guitar. Anyone have a clue?

Cryten0

This is the closest I could find: https://youtu.be/Kj_JgkAInfg?t=472

Silver52963

Omg thats it! Ty!

SaxtonHale_

Okay, this is more trying to remember the anime. But it was this weird series but I vividly remember this guy studying for an exam and getting stressed so much he literally vomits out answers during the test and tries to eat it? It's really disturbing but so fascinating

Kissmyasthma007

Not sure about disturbing but I remember the same plot for a Doraemon episode from when I was a kid

SaxtonHale_

It was Paranoia Agent!

Oniisaab

`Hey guys! New to reddit and this community! wanted some opinions on our anime merch, is this the right platform? If yes, how do i post images on this thread? :P`

Verzwei

Nope. If you'd read over our [rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/rules#wiki_do_not_sell_things) you'd see that we expressly prohibit the sale or advertisement of goods or services here.

Oniisaab

Cool! thanks for letting me know.

alotmorealots

At least a 1000 or so people here, you can find an index of the episode discussion threads here: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1041ytn/oniichan_wa_oshimai_onimai_im_now_your_sister/ I'd say it's currently my semi-objective (vs sentimental favorite) Anime of the Season.

I'm really enjoying the fantastic worldbuilding in Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. It's a very unique sci-fi setting, and the story has a cool element of mystery to it.

alotmorealots

*Kaina* is a more straight forward narrative and a more modern show in terms of its beats, structure and visual presentation. Its world feels both expansive and also a bit claustrophobic at the same time due to the way the setting works. *Fire Hunter* is a lot more eclectic with picture book still inserts, a less linear narrative, characters kept at an arms length, and a pervasive oppressiveness. More likely to either crash and burn, or become a modern neglected classic. Time will tell!

everybageleverywhere

I’m up to date on both shows. It’s a bit difficult to pick one over the other since they have 3 and 2 episodes out so far, but personally, I’m enjoying Kaina more. Both of them are about characters who go on a journey in an interesting and original fantasy world. Both are very pretty, though Hikari no Ou has some noticeable animation jank in the second ep that could spell trouble down the road. Kaina has some great music and spectacular scenery. In terms of story, Hikari no Ou seems to be doing something new and different while Kaina sticks to more familiar (but still good) ground, though there’s plenty of time for either script to take a turn.

FlaminScribblenaut

> Ooyukiumi no Kaina (Kaina of the Great Snow Sea) Intriguing. Was a little averse to the CG characters but the setting is utterly gorgeous and captivating and they’re setting up an interesting dynamic of having one person from each “side” of this world, each with different understandings of it, come together. My motivation to watch further kinda wavered in the length since Ep 1 but I do want to get back to it > Hikari no Ou(The Fire Hunter) Fantastic. Gorgeous, textured, wonderfully stylized, serious, melancholic, fascinating and bountifully delivered-upon speculative setup in a world where humans stopped being able to use fire, sympathetic and excellently-acted main young girl. The one’s got me *real* excited.

manuscritch

Looking for something that focuses on married/family life. It doesn’t exactly have to be slice of life, but not looking for anything where the family part is more the background. Examples of things I’ve seen that are similar to what I’m looking for would be: Sweetness and Lightning Clannad After Story Some amount of found family is alright, but more like a step-parent/child or a couple adopting. But not something like Spy x Family where it’s a ruse that grows into something more. Appreciate the suggestions.

Silver52963

Not exactly a "family" story anime, but your comment makes me think of "Way of the house husband"

Does anyone know this anime? I think it's about a high school boy that ends up getting beat up by his mom and possibly sister a lot at home, I think his mom was/used to be a wrestler and thinks it will toughen him up or something. I think it was mostly about him in high school, but don't remember if he had a phobia about girls or was just normal otherwise aside from his family beating him up. Thank you for your time. Best wishes to you.

I know it’s a meme, but genuinely the show gets much better in the 2nd half. I went from loathing it to being really moved by the drama.

Fair enough, don't push yourself to watch something you don't like!

joey7571

Does anyone know an anime about a boy that is somewhat responsible and at home takes care of his mom and a teacher that lives with or visits a lot but the teacher gets drunk, they make a mess and give him a hard time, he cooks serveral times for him? The teacher may be blonde possibly with glasses, i think he and his mom have dark hair. I think it is mainly about him going to high school, but can only remember them giving him a hard time at home. Thanks for your time and best wishes to you.

I watched the first episode of nearly literally ever Winter 2023 seasonal anime. My thoughts and rankings [can be found here.](https://stuffireallylikealot.blogspot.com/2023/01/winter-2023-seasonal-anime-first.html) Lots of cool stuff this season, though also a few hot takes both positive and negative.

bubudog1

I'm happy you like UniteUp! It seems very under-watched.

Gamerunglued

Yeah, it was a very pleasant surprise. Wasn't even on my radar going into the season, but that first episode was wonderful. I'd love to say I hope more people check it out, but it getting delayed probably means no one is going to give it a look unfortunately.

Jaamun100

Any word on if we’ll get a season 2 for The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest? [The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest] >!Can’t believe they ended it on a cliffhanger..!<

Cryten0

I can find no information about a second season for The Strongest Sage.

Durinthal

I've noticed Nichibros using a lot of comedic sound effects as well as [the Parodius "Wow!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoejABV98rk&t=17) which makes me wonder how many other anime that thing's been used in.

Cryten0

Are we sure that it started from parodius? It would not stretch the imagination to think a parody game series would use stock effects available to and used by the entertainment industry.

Durinthal

No idea, that was what I was able to pull up as an example.

Verzwei

It's in a shitload of trashy harem series. source: I watch a shitload of trashy harem series.

SauceKingRagu

My Volume 2 DVD of Infinte Ryvius is borked so I had to go elsewhere to watch it. Replacing it won't cost much, so it's not a big deal. Infinite Ryvius is really good, though folks.

Verzwei

Watched the first episode of Ice Guy and Cool Colleague since the dub dropped a few days ago and holy shit was that boring. The characters are so painfully bland and uninteresting. There's zero chemistry. The only character that seemed to have any personality or spark with the others was the *other* OL, [Ice Guy] >!the fox spirit girl!<. And I have to wonder how much damage this dude causes to the space around him (not to mention the electronics and office equipment) since he's constantly generating mini-blizzards around himself. I also watched the first episode of Sugar Apple and that was a pleasant surprise. Yes, it's super tropey. Yes, it's extremely heavy-handed with its moral message. Yes, it crammed a *lot* (possibly too much) information and narration/explanative dialogue into a single episode. But I still liked it despite all that. The soft art style gave for a simplistic look that still had plenty of character, the back-and-forth between Ann and [Sugar Apple] >!the inexplicably man-sized hot fairy!< Shall was cliché but still entertaining. The only red flag to me was that the episode played what I *think* is the OP at the end of the episode and featured way, way too many dudes. I thought I was settling in for a "two traveling companions" (like a "girly" Spice & Wolf) type of show but the OP makes me worry that this is going to go some kind of weird otome direction.

everybageleverywhere

Same here with Sugar Apple. Was not expecting much, watched the first episode on a whim, and now it’s one of my favourites of the season. After seeing the first three episodes, it looks like the guys in the ED are not additional love interests or weird otome guys. They’re regular secondary characters who have a role in the plot and happen to be eye candy if you’re into it.

Durinthal

> The characters are so painfully bland and uninteresting. There's zero chemistry. That's how I felt about the start but after watching episode 3 and currently on 4 as I type this I think it's getting better in that regard. They're still kind of dull as characters on their own but their dynamic's getting better. Still not *great* since I would take Holo and Lawrence talking about anything over any of this but improving. For Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, I get that slavery is a significant part of the setting and the dynamic for their relationship in particular but it's still off-putting to me. Leans into a few shoujo tropes I'm not all that fond of too.

Manitary

> Leans into a few shoujo tropes I'm not all that fond of too. [Sugar Apple ep1] >!idk if it's a shoujo trope, but when he went like "you can pray me all you want, you have to give me order if you want me to do anything" in her face, it was a bit of a [](#kumikolook) moment for me lol [](#rengethink)!<

Verzwei

[Sugar Apple] >!I took that to be him trying to prove a point and chip away at her perceived moral high ground; He was indicating that if push came to shove and her safety was on the line, she'd torture him (or threaten to torture him) in order to force him to protect her, which in his eyes would make her no better than any other human. Not saying it isn't a fucked up mentality, but it's like a "people show you who they truly are when they're most desperate" type of thing.!< At least in this show I felt like it fit the context of the scene and the characterization we've been shown so far.

Manitary

[sugar apple] >!oh I don't mean the meaning of what he said, that makes sense, rather the presentation. "kabedon-like" pose + sexy voice looking in the eyes + domination play wording...maybe it's my brain that's too far gone into the gutter lol [](#eheheh)!<

Heda-of-Aincrad

That was also the impression I got from this scene. [Sugar Apple] >!Shall's realistic attitude makes all the difference for me and sets it apart from other anime I've read about that tackle the subject of slavery. He's not happy to just have an owner who's nice to him - he encouraged Anne to buy him specifically because he thought she'd be easy to escape from, understandably doesn't trust humans, and calls her out for being naive about their situation even if her intentions are good. This scene was him trying to prove a point, even though it didn't totally work the way he planned - Anne only "threatened" to punch him, which probably wouldn't hurt much at all.!<

Jaamun100

Sugar Apple is my favorite show of the season. I like Ice Guy though; sure, it’s not exciting but it’s a realistic depiction of a crush between young colleagues with little romantic experience. It’s also a breath of fresh air, since I haven’t seen many shows depicting the all-to-easy charm of an office romance.

Manitary

Agree on almost everything (-ice guy except fox lady, +sugar apple) > The only red flag to me was that the episode played what I think is the OP at the end of the episode and featured way, way too many dudes. I thought I was settling in for a "two traveling companions" (like a "girly" Spice & Wolf) type of show but the OP makes me worry that this is going to go some kind of weird otome direction. I don't think so, my impression is that the romance is very much focused on Shall, everyone else is gonna at most try for the love triangle / challenge their relationship or something. It does have that "guess I _have to_ get a slave even if I don't want to" angle, but I'm gonna judge that part depending on how they're gonna deal with it over the course of the season.

Verzwei

> It does have that "guess I have to get a slave even if I don't want to" angle, but I'm gonna judge that part depending on how they're gonna deal with it over the course of the season. I'm hoping that within a few episodes, [Sugar Apple] >!she throws the bagged wing at him and is like "Do what you want" and then he chooses to stay with her. Yeah, the slave angle is always unpleasant and not many series handle it in the most tasteful of manners, but if she upholds her end of the bargain once they get to that city (I think they said it was only supposed to take 6 days?) and then gives him freedom and he sticks around for reasons, I'll be happy with that. Or, if he keeps trying to goad her into crushing the wing to exploit him (and prove some kind of point) I could easily see her getting fed up with that provocation and 'releasing' him, only for him to immediately change his mind about her.!<

Heda-of-Aincrad

I really enjoyed the first episode of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale. I watched it on a whim, and now it's one of my early favorites of the season along with Kaina, Buddy Daddies and Tomo-chan. The banter between the two leads was so fun to watch.

Heda-of-Aincrad

Which one, Sugar Apple Fairy Tale? (I mentioned a few series in my comment.)

AmethystItalian

So many people not liking Ice Guy, really does remind me of people not liking Shikimori. Personally it's by far my AotS but I also appreciate low drama fluffy romances so it's right in my strike zone. I think the pair are a perfect match for each other and their interactions are awkward and adorable. Not saying you should pick it back up but just for anyone else who reads this is can actually be a good show if you enjoy those kinds of shows.

isthatsoudane

I also love it just to reaffirm for anyone reading this. Give the show a try!!!

entelechtual

Agreed on both counts. It feels bad to drop what seems like a comfy romance but man, even after two episodes I could not get into anyone except the same character you mentioned. Having watched both this and Angel Next Door, I can’t quite figure out what makes one bearable and the other a snoozefest. I guess I appreciate that in Angel they’re not immediately smitten with each other, and have some chemistry. Ice Guy is basically: Meet cute -> Madly in love

Lemurians

In Ice Guy's defense, that is just how it works sometimes. Immediate mutual attraction is a thing. [](#yuishrug) At least the relationship is believable, and you can buy that they'd both be into each other, unlike AND.

I like the pattern on Yurucamp's Nadeshiko blanket and was hoping to turn it into a phone case. Is there anywhere I can find a recreation of it? [Link](https://img1.ak.crunchyroll.com/i/spire2/8eae65ed0d12a97f7ee6366608f679d41583672588_full.jpg)

ThisShitisDope

Obviously there are online merch stores selling a phone case with this pattern, but you're looking to make one yourself I'm guessing? I couldn't find one on the vector pattern sites. This is technically copyrighted art, after all. But making this vector art yourself isn't out of reach, might take an hour or two if you're new to it.

jennietools

Yeah, to be more specific I was hoping to make a phone wrap as opposed to a case. Thanks for checking. I'll give it a shot recreating it myself.

Embarrassed-Slice-13

I'm searching for a child princess character who wears a dress that has battery run lights. There is an episode where she is helping a friend of hers escape from her father. I've been trying to find this character to no avail. Anyone willing to help?

AnimeHoarder

For Xfinity/Comcast Internet customers, there's a Lunar New Year promo from Jan 23 to Jan 29th. Select shows from The Anime Network and three other Asian content channels are streaming free. Available are 50 shows from The Anime Network, which is the cable VOD division of Sentai Filmworks. Only some are as recent as 2022 such as *Ya Boy Kongming* and *I'm Quitting Heroing*. GuP Das Finale I and II are part of this, but not III. I'm watching this on the Flex streaming device which I got free from Xfinity. The movie or the show? There are some streaming websites out there with both in sub although I'm not sure if I can share them here

**AZUMANGA DAIOH HYPE!!** Its the anime that brought me into anime. I still love it 10 years later and recommend it to anyone of any demographic looking for some fun SoL without being overly pandering like future CGDCT.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cryten0

Yeah I personally would not call it slice of life, as the purpose is not experiencing these peoples everyday lives, its the comedy. Its just their school lives are in the setting.

_Ridley

We should all spend the day arguing about whether or not it's a CGDCT.

collapsedblock6

I mean, I consider it one since it is kind of essentially that, an all-girl cast living daily life. They have random school chit-chat, go to the beach, sports festivals, cultural festivals, worry about exams, worry about graduatio, etc. just like most school-set CGDCT. Imo it was just made in a time where the moe aesthetic wasn't put at the front and less in-your-face, mainly from a production standpoint since modern CGDCT now have all this shine and candy color palette to it but Azumanga's art style still feel moe to me.

_Ridley

I'd argue it's a straight up comedy that has more in common with Wasteful Days of High School Girls than Non Non Biyori. It's up there with Cromartie High School for peak 2000s anti-humor

collapsedblock6

Non Non Biyori (and Yuru Camp as well to also reply /u/RPGOwl) are what I would consider on the extreme of being pure SoL with comedy sprinkled in. A key point that I use to differentiate comedic SoL from more straightforward comedies is the episode structure. The comedy from Azumanga, like many other CGDCT like Gochiusa, Kiniro Mosaic or also NNB, comes from the daily life events from the characters. Sitcoms essentially. Nichibros and Cromartie on the other hand are more skit format comedies (and far more slapstick at that), everything on the skits is built to lead to a certain punchline rather than surging organically from daily life. Think of how many episodes in the former shows I mentioned start in the morning and as they go with their day some shenanigans happen, usually thinly connected to an actual episodic plotline. E.g: its someone's birthday they worry about it in school, tell their friends, then go together to the mall, someone plays with a mannequin because why not, party starts and someone gets drunk, embarrassing tsundere gift giving, end. Now say, the skit of Cromartie that just starts with someone humming a song, and everyone just asks everyone around and no one knows and builds up to the huge concert of humming a song nobody knows. Or the one were some girls scream at some dude in his house in Nichibros. The first skit just jumps from character to character until the punchline. And in the other the characters that appear only do so for this very skit in the episode, despite the scenario being mundane, the characters are just there to deliver a punchline before being discarded for he next skit. At which point I would say that both of these shows prefer to focus comedic skits for better timing than showing the natural daily life of characters.

baquea

To the best of my knowledge, 'cute girls doing cute things [in cute ways]' was originally coined in the early 2000s as a description for Ichigo Marshmallow, which I'd consider a straight-up comedy as well. It's only because of the direction that the genre evolved in that it came to be more associated with SoL antics than comedy.

Hi, I am a fan of the action in the monogatari series. However, the dialogue is unfortunately too long winded for me at times (I know this may be at odds with fans here). I dropped off around half way through the series. Kizumonogatari was my favorite of what I’ve watched. Is there more like that for me to push through for? Or is it sprinkled in lightly enough that I should already have a sense of what to expect?

octopathfinder

There are a couple fights later but overall it's not an action show. The dialogue is why most people enjoy it so if you're not feeling that I'd recommend just dropping it.

Thanks for the feedback. That’s a shame for me, because I love the animation style. I would just rather read the light novel with how wordy it is watching subbed haha

soldier1204

Any worklife anime recs? I thoroughly enjoyed shows like "Police in a pod", "Sakura Quest", and especially "Shirobako". Hoping to find more of these 'a day in the life' type shows.

Ioxem

Yomigaeru Sora is a must-watch.

sohvan

For a bit more out there worklife anime, try Planetes.

soldier1204

I did watch Planetes. It was Sunrise at their best imo.

sohvan

Have you seen Space Brothers? It doesn't start as a worklife anime, but it has some elements I liked with the shows you mentioned having watched.

soldier1204

Not yet, I'll add it to the list

Deruta

Servant X Service and Working! are some of my favorites, about government office workers and restaurant employees respectively. Same character designer and studio, so similar vibe. Planetes is a classic about space junk salvagers. Very grounded, despite its setting. Often shows up on people’s top-10 lists and very much deserves it. Heaven’s Design Department is about a team of angels making god’s kooky, not-at-all-thought-out demands for animals a reality on the newly-created earth (and as a designer myself it nails shitty clients to an uncomfortable degree lol). Teaches you some actual biology and ecology as an added bonus! If you’re okay with older stuff You’re Under Arrest is hilarious, and its car and mechanical animation is seriously some of the best ever made. I have a hard time getting into media about cops nowadays but it’s pretty low-stakes stuff (Japan in the 80s lol). Patlabor is another classic of the same era (and studio), focusing on Tokyo police with mecha. They’re used as glorified patrol cars. In-universe mecha are about as common as delivery trucks, so it makes sense.

soldier1204

Hell yea, Planetes is also one of my favourites. I have watched Working! and did enjoy it but haven't heard of S x S yet so i'll add it to my list. I'd been eyeing You're Under Arrest and Patlabor for awhile. Guess it's time to start watching em for real. But, I think I'll watch Heaven's Design dept first as it's less of a commitment. Thx for the recs!

Syokhan

Uramichi Oniisan, maybe? It's more on the comedic side (with a dash of existential crises) and I'm not completely sure if it would fit the criteria for a "worklife series", but the main cast are all working adults and a good part of the series takes place at their workplace.

soldier1204

I watched a few eps of it while it was airing, the humour wasn't my cup of tea sadly.

Syokhan

No problem, if that kind of humor isn't your thing yeah, nothing you can do about it!

Manitary

Automatic recommendations are other P.A.Works series, like Hanasaku Iroha (inn) and Shiroi suna no aquatope (aquarium).

soldier1204

I held off on aquatope cuz of the mixed reviews. Have you watched it yet?

Manitary

Yeah I watched it as it aired. It's pretty good at tackling some realistic life experiences like drastically changing career, entering into the workforce, difference between working for a family business or a company, etc.

soldier1204

Sounds like what I've been looking for, will defo give it a shot.

Azumanga diaoh! Because i've been digging a little bit for curiosity, this image is [probably a meta reference to one of the first ever posts](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/66k0i/what_happens_when_you_put_prince_of_tennis/) (maybe *the* first ever post?) here, 15 years ago. Happy 15th anniversary, r/anime! Edit: Thanks so much for the gold!

i apologize to /u/neito here, as I simply assumed that the first mod/creator would be one of the first posters to this sub, and well then it was a bit of clicking till i found stuff w/ "15 years ago", and looked for the first thing they posted on this sub! i wonder how whoever mod that also found this did it lol

neito

Fuck, I... actually don't remember posting that. IT's been a long few years, lol. Any other old-timers remember when the most viewed version of Soramimi Kaki had like, weird antivax shit edited into it on youtube? EDIT: Found it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qp52SAUO7k

I'm slowly going through kyoto animation's backlog. there are a number of shows I've never heard anything about, though...I'll still watch them, but I'm curious if anyone has seen any of the following and has anything to share about them * Air * Kanon * Sora o Miageru Shōjo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai aka Munto * Beyond the Boundary especially for the last two, the fact that they're more recent (compared to air and Kanon) and i've never heard at them all makes me worry a bit, but anime fans also have short memories so who knows

Verzwei

> Beyond the Boundary Back when I watched this, there was only the series, and it was extremely frustrating and disappointing. It did have some good moments but the characterization was shallow and the plot was kind of a mess. Typical incomplete light novel adaptation syndrome. But *my understanding* is that the film(s) help the animated portion feel more complete. I never got around to watching them.

TheBlessedBoy99

I am also working on finishing my KyoAni backlog, but I've put it on pause because I don't want to run out of KyoAni to watch! I've seen Air and Kanon out of those. I don't speak very highly of either, despite having Clannad as one of my favorite anime. Air started out strong, with interesting dynamics between the MC, FMC, and FMC's aunt. But then they start going into the obligatory Key supernatural lore and it kinda turns messy. The ending was very powerful though and made me tear up, but I'm not very sure how we got there. Kanon didn't affect me that strongly emotionally. While Clannad focuses mostly on Nagisa from the beginning, Kanon really gives each girl approximately equal screen time. The result of that being that it didn't hit me as hard when the sad stuff started going on.

alotmorealots

> Beyond the Boundary One of these days I'm going to watch it purely for the dancing clip that gets posted intermittently lol It's completely not what the show is about, but I have watched shows for similarly flimsy reasons!

bubudog1

I totally started watching the show just to see that episode, and then never finished the rest.

Shimmering-Sky

I've seen Air and Kanon out of those. Air I was kiiiiiiiiinda eh on, but I did still like it enough to give it a positive score (also its OP is *easily* my favorite out of all the Key adaptations I've seen and also one of my favorites in general). Meanwhile, Kanon is just *really good*. I think it's more consistently good compared to the first season of Clannad tbh, and this is coming from someone who *loved* the first season of Clannad.

isthatsoudane

Oooh I see. Thank you!! I guess just gotta buy a lot of tissue

Shimmering-Sky

Yeah lol they *do* both get quite sad at times, as long as you're invested in the characters.

Manitary

> Beyond the Boundary It's among the lesser talked KyoAni titles for some reason, admittedly it's not among my favourites but I still consider it good and I wouldn't actively discourage anyone from watching; if you like KyoAni types of stories and visual presentation, you'll probably like it. Unfortunately Munto is missing on my list too, so I cannot comment on that one.

isthatsoudane

Ah thanks. At least it isn't bad!

Manitary

Oh I quite liked it, it's just very hard to stand out compared to absolute beasts like Hyouka, Koe no katachi, Hibike!, and the likes [](#hikariactually)

isthatsoudane

Thank you!

MillieChliette

Air and Kanon are similar to Clannad in that they are anime adaptations of visual novels by Key. They all have very similar flavors and are all very good, but Clannad is by far the most popular. I'm in the oddball camp of preferring Kanon to Clannad. I like some of the characters a lot more. Also: Uguu~

isthatsoudane

Ah that's good to hear (that they're good and have their own things going on!) Are they all super depressing like Clannad is supposed to be?

MillieChliette

All stories by Key have their ups and downs ;)

Manitary

I only know tangentially about Kanon from other people (of those three, I only played the Clannad VN), and I think so, yes. They are all tagged "Nakige"\* on vndb, so they should all be - doubly so because they're all Key VNs, their titles tend be dramas, mostly. \* > This type of a story is designed to have an emotional impact on the player and make itself memorable, crying is usual but mostly optional. > It's explained in wikipedia article about KEY like this: The developers at Tactics created a simple formula for a game: a comedic first half with a heart-warming romantic middle followed by a tragic separation and finally an emotional reunion formed what is known as a "crying game". The main purpose of such a game is to make the player feel for the characters and make them cry due to emotional scenarios which serves to leave a bigger impact on the player after the game is over.

isthatsoudane

Ughhhhh haha it's gonna be a bear

Blackheart595

Oh those... haven't seen them yet but they pop up in discussion from time to time and I've only heard good things about them.

RPGOwl

Obscure anime title recommendation: [Two Walnuts](https://myanimelist.net/anime/7775/Futatsu_no_Kurumi). Short drama about a girl who gets transported into WW II Japan and relives the bombing that the country went through. It's not Barefoot Gen but it's decent.

Lazer_mario

I remember seeing this one mecha anime that was possibly by sunrise idk it was a long while back, but essentially giant mechas become spin tops that clash in the woods for the most part, the main mech was I think mostly white with some blue

sohaiboi

Any sports anime that focuses on the strategy and mind-games aspect, rather than slice of life? Something like Blue Lock, One Outs and Akagi. Also wondering if Hajime no Ippo, Slam Dunk, Major, and Big Windup fall into this category.

_Ridley

Since no two people use the term to mean the same thing, I don't know what constitutes slice of life for you, but I'd say Big Windup is more of a drama than anything. It has lots of comedy and sports action in it, but it's mainly concerned with the players' relationships to each other and how their psychology affects their performance. Chihayafuru spends quite a bit of time on strategy and mind games. All the matches are written with a lot of insight into strategy, tactics, player style, etc. ETA: I just remembered the tennis series Baby Steps, which also goes pretty heavy on strategy and mental state.

WeeziMonkey

If you're willing to count gambling games as a sport, Kakegurui is very similar to One Outs. It has been almost 10 years but from my vague memory I don't remember Hajime no Ippo falling under this category. There is *some strategy*, like how to deal with tricky match-ups, predicting what your opponent will do, stamina management etc, but in the end battles are mostly won through hard work, determination, strength and skill, not through 900 IQ monologues.

Blackheart595

If you're up for manga, try [Liar Game](https://myanimelist.net/manga/1649/Liar_Game). Though it's not sport and just all mind games.

Manitary

Not a sport, but I Kaiji maybe could scratch a similar itch than One Outs

sohaiboi

Ive watch both seasons of it, but thanks!

Aggravating-Lead29

I recently watch Le Chevalier D\`Eon anime (im on ep 7) and it was fun, I never knew fencing could be exciting, this is probably one of the few anime that portrays fencing in a very good way (a [snippet](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPeAsd9esSg&t=17s) of the swordplay). Although Bojji from Ousama Ranking also used fencing but this just hits different. If anyone is looking for a Fantasy + historical + politic anime you should give this a try, it got magic, swordplay, and the plot is quite fine (not the best but enjoyable)

ImportantPainting

I love this anime honestly, I love the realistic character designs/animation (the swordplay in particular) and the whole Ancien Regime historical setting. The story is a bit messy but I respect how mature it is & how seriously it takes itself. I wish I could find more like it

Aggravating-Lead29

>Did you know he was a real person? (d'Eon) Yep, thanks to the ending scene and some googling you can tell which one is inspired by real life historical figures. But since I never learn about France's history I don't really know how much is inspired by real events, I mean I know it's fiction but maybe it was loosely based on some major historical events before the whole French Revolution.

New to the world of anime. My first was laid back camp and I really liked it, the vibes were so relaxing. Any recommendations for similar anime?
