Also Allahu Naxristo (yes I still say this 😭) to Hodan šŸ’” may her soul rest. She was killed in a explosion in Kismayo a couple years back leaving her two children behind ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ She was a true gem to our community

Humble-Library-4362

So many of our parents didn’t wear headscarf’s, even my own mom has photos back in Somalia where she’s had a big Afro listening to disco music Whenever I bring this up to her, she denies it ever happened, and says ā€œwe were not guided back thanā€ā€¦ How did this happen in such a short time? How did we go from tolerant non practicing Muslims to salafi wahabi ultra conservative force hijab at 2 yrs old … it’s definitely not our culture… infact it’s so recent, we have centuries of culture where we don’t wear headscarves and our traditional clothing is considered ā€œrevealingā€ to Islamic and Arabic standards…

Money!!! Wahabi ideologues from Wahabi Universities in Saudi Arabia (again free) came into Somali in the late 90s with buckets full of Oil money, without a state or legal authority to regulate them (like most states in SE Asia, North Africa) this form of Islam spread very quickly as it became linked with prosperity (which at a time of hunger, war, strife made them easy pickings). You have to remember some of these people where in camps for 10+ years, and these madarasas were the only education they recieved particularly Wahabi Islam. In the early 90s also groups such as Al-Iltihad were formed and the alternatives were drug-crazed clan militias with ruthless warlords or group of people who gave you dinner/lunch at a mosque and gave you free clothes ( the tent hijabs). These groups gained huge following and this form of Islam spread, remember this is also happening in unstable countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen. So, initially the western Somali diaspora were educated, urbanised folk but the balance increasingly shifted to the wahabi ideologues who preyed on the sense of fear of loss of identity and community for their kids.

Yup...we have the receipts. Photo albums show us how liberal in dress, makeup, hair, etc, we were. Even the ones that try to hide their pictures have family or friends that tell us how they were back in the day. Have a super liberal (I think atheist) family member who tells me stories about the most wadaad family members and how they were back in day. Makes them embarrassed. Also...get this...he legit knows a few Al Shabaab members who used to drink alcohol, have premarital sex, rob people and do other so-called haram shit. Shocked, but not shocked, when he outs them.

Humble-Library-4362

Al shabab will never make sense to me… so they ā€œkill innocent Somali kidsā€ because religion says so??? Apparently we are ā€œkuffarā€ for having democracy… it’s almost like they want to live in some Stone Age

som_233

Yeah, we are in a different world. Happy to say we are. And yeah, stone-age principles at work with Islam...I mean, 7th Century warring and take all prisoners as sex slaves or slaves way of life. As much as I hate to say it, don't ever forget Somalis don't have civics classes to learn about democracy and separation of church and state. Most Somalis' education back home is "religous " (using quotes cause that's not education).

Arabs don’t wear hijab as well! Ever heard of Arab Christians or Arab Jews who wear crosses or small hats on their head? Hijab and modesty can be seen in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Nigeria. Arabic is the lingua franca of Muslims. Nothing more, nothing less! No one is dying to be an Arab we are Somali with a rich culture that just happens to be Muslim!

Absolutely stunning women. Her sister is a millionaire btw. Such an accomplished family.

Funnily enough, that concept of minorities undergoing an extreme differentiation process, rather than assimilation, is actually a well established phenomenon in social psychology. Essentially, this is predicated on how different the minority group is to the majority group, the extent of any previous interactions or cultural awareness and the level of disadvantage the minority group experiences. The more insecure in their social status a minority group is compared to the majority, the more likely they are to strengthen their own social identities, become more insular and compensate feelings of insecurity through outright rejection or discrimination of the out group or majority’s values. However, I do think Somali hyperislamism is a result of an influx of less educated immigrants post the 90s, coupled with a direct response to the post 9/11 sociopolitical landscape which resulted in reactionary views and the wholesale abandonment of moderatism. A perfect storm of susceptible population, exclusionary social landscape and disadvantage with a nefarious element of extreme religious propaganda. Sorry for ranting lmao

Gallaballatime1

I strongly believe it’s due to the influx of less educated Somalis migrating. My own parents say so themselves

Babybabybabyq

In our case though the extremism started back home. Someone in the comments has a more detailed explanation but it really stemmed from being preyed on after the war.

Shes beautiful and I would have gone for her if I was the same age. And I think that has something to do with it. Not me, but i think she started wearing the hijab on and off When she got married as form of respect to her husband then later divorced and she may have grewn to like it. You know Hijab is a personal choice and if you have the ability to take it off and then choose to wear it then im glad. Its the not knowing fear of what could happen that hurts me as a brother.

som_233

Rear in peace. I really enjoyed her dispatches.

Numerous-Expert-2893

i remeber tht video where she was in kismayo and that older woman told her to wear a jilbab instead of an abaya and a hijab and when she came back the woman started congratulating her, that was so awkward for her and that was such a weird thing to watch

goshaaa77

You are the biggest troll in this subreddit. You undercover Islamist. Gtfo.

goshaaa77

No I’m not a Muslim just have my own opinion, don’t be mad because I disagree with you Prove me wrong on the points that I made, it’s clear as day šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø You were the same user crying about a Somali woman wanting to wear a niqab/jilbab on her own choice. https://www.reddit.com/r/XSomalian/comments/xq932b/tell_me_you_want_to_be_oppressed_without_telling/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf I thought as exmuslims in our community we advocated for Somalis to have free decisions let’s not be biased and keep it fair

sunsetmemories1

Glad I have you pressed šŸ˜„ and yes niqab should be banned globally. Go lose sleep over that 😘

golaface13

Babybabybabyq
