People keep saying that the grandma screams, not because he is black, but because the dude is the South Korean television personality Sam Okyere. Except the thing is that this dude right here _isn't_ Sam Okyere.
His name is Joel Roberts and he is not famous in South Korea.
Here's the clip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb1AtbpAPrU
The guy on the left, who is (probably) in on the prank, screams first and that's probably why the grandma screams as well.
Lets also note that other races outside of white people are racist. Dated a chilean girl and her mom hated Mexicans, salvadorians and black people. Racism has never been exclusively an anglo thing.
I ain't no bleeping anglo. German, Dutch, Norwegian and IRISH, no ANGLO.
Where did that guy get the idiotic idea that White equals ANGLO. Otherwise the post was correct. Racists exist in all races/ethic groups.
I lived in Japan for years. The first time I saw the video I was over there and I thought I would be surprised too. I only saw one black guy out and about outside of the people I knew from work. He was my waiter in a restaurant and I had so many questions, but didnāt get a chance to ask any of them.
Also you usually donāt expect a guy surprising you with an Ironman mask to⦠well⦠remove the mask immediately.
There are very few faces underneath that wouldnāt flinch people.
Honestly, after watching that, I think the whole thing is scripted, including the grandmother's reaction. Those two look like they were there *pretending* to have a conversation while waiting on Joel to come up on her.
You can just tell by the framing of the shot, with the first two characters left of center--leaving room for a third character to come in from the right.
ETA: The smart fakes put a lot of thought into these. Notice how he plays it off so casually coming over her right shoulder while she faces the camera directly; doing this camouflages the fact that this isn't the normal way you'd set up a camera for two people side-by-side.
I doubt that very much. Her reaction is immediate, she takes no time at all to see who the face is. Itās not that sheās racist, per se, but if this takes place in Asia or a very Asian community, she probably doesnāt have a ton of experience with black folks and probably expected just a regular Asian person under the mask and was surprised by a dark face. Doesnāt need to be malicious but anyone here who says theyād recognize some B celebrity in under a second while they removed a mask is lying. I wouldnāt even recognize Brad Pitt that fast. Heās also wearing white gloves which I assume is part of the prank, hiding and emphasizing his dark face when he reveals it. It can be āabout raceā without being racist.
Have you heard of Poeās Law? Its fascinating. Its all about how parody of religious extremism is indistinguishable from the real thing when done online in written format.
You can see her starting to smile at the end. To me, it looks like the reaction anyone would have to thinking itās one person, and then being surprised that itās another when the mask comes up. As people have said, she knows this man. She thinks itās some stranger, and then realizes itās a friend. Or maybe she even thinks itās her son, and then realizes itās her sonās friend.
āI donāt know who this person is and am admittedly ignorant on the context of this, but Iām going to ignore the explanation of people who do know who this is and insist itās racially motivated.ā
Bruh a person who speaks the truth with the source and all and yet people still go upvoting the dumbass assuming every black person in Korea is Sam Okyereā¦
There's been a few threads in the last couple days which discussed the term "african-american" in American culture, its origins and purpose, and its changing interpretation and use over time. I assume it's a reference to that.
It's a fucking strange term. What other country has people with a dual national name ? Hilarious when a stupid American journalist called Idris Elba an African American to his face.
It's not uncommon to use a term like \[nationality A\]-\[nationality B\] when someone originally from one country moves to another permanently, or when someone is from a region that speaks another language than is typically expected from that country (e.g. French Canadian) but "african-american" is just a weird way to avoid saying the word black.
It's massively a north American thing though. Weirdly it's mostly if their heritage is African, Irish, Italian or Asian. Everywhere else gets forgotten about, why?
Also the whole African American thing is putting all black people into one convenient bracket. Never mind there are lots of African countries and thousands of ethnicities, they're all African American. Ffs
It's not that strange lol when you consider that African-Americans have a unique culture that is separate both from the African countries they come from and from mainstream American culture.
Yeah, in America not every black person is from Africa but we have become accustomed to saying āAfrican Americanā because itās considered by many to be a general PC term for members of the black community yet itās often incorrect . Some people are still shy of the word āBlackā for whatever reason but itās all with positive intent to be respectful so itās not really a huge deal.
Well, no, but an inordinate amount of them are employed by donkey shows and so most Mexicans probably don't see them or at least won't admit they've seen a midget because of the implication.
What an interesting and not quite innocent take. I would think one would need intimate knowledge of Mexican donkey shows for this. Unless you went down a really niche rabbit hole at 3 am. š
The prank was the reveal of who he is. It'd be like Robert Downey Jr. showing up in that mask on the streets of Boston and then taking it off. Maybe someone wouldn't be surprised at a sudden iron man but they would be surprised by The Iron Man.
The hand you see on the left of the old lady is her grandson who is a famous Korean Youtuber named Big Marvel. You might have seen his viral videos of him beatboxing or playing Camila Cabelloās hit song with a rubber chicken five years ago. The Black guy is his friend. The old lady knows him.
EDIT: Whoa! This blew up. Thanks for the upvotes and the awards! Didnāt mean to āspoilā what happened here! Iām not sure if the original uncropped video is still up or if it had been deleted/unlisted because a lot of his old prank/experiment videos like this are gone and he rebranded his YT channel now with mostly music content.
After reading this, I watched her reaction and you can see she's smiling. She was startled and pulled back but after the initial shock she leaned back toward him.
they're thinking of Sam Okyere (Probably spelled that wrong) who's moderately famous in Korea. Since Korea isn't exactly filled with black people it's plausible that she could have mistaken him for Sam, but iirc that wasn't the case (also don't know the real reason she was shocked anymore... this video is old af)
It kind of looks like Chris Lyon, who was on Itaewon Class, which was a fairly popular Netflix K-Drama. He is also a model in Korea.
But it could also be a random black dude in Korea too.
I mean yes they are but if she saw them in her periphery then she could have automatically assumed there would be a white face to go with the white hands, not even immediately realizing they were gloves.

I was there from 14-15 and my black friend would get stopped so people could take pictures of themselves with him. Never rude or malicious just wanted a selfie lol. We were both in good shape and people would ask if we were professional athletes.
To be honest I'm a Black expat who live in Japan and went a lot in Korea and there was fewer racism here than in Europe.
Most of the "racism" is stares and ignorance.
I got harrassed multiple times in Belgium (born and raised)
Right, it's mostly just curiosity and most of the time the people staring in Japan, Korea would probably be keen to spark up a conversation with you if they had the confidence. Percieved language barriers and nerves just get the best of people sometimes.
When I lived in Korea, your average random ajima was as nice to me as anyone would be back on the states. Nobody was shocked by the simple fact I'm black.
He's wearing white gloves, even if he is super famous, the exact joke you see at first glance is exactly the joke. She's not shocked he is Sam the semi-famous tv host, but that he's black.
South Korea is extremely racist. He had to apologize for calling out a high school celebration featuring black-face a couple years ago.
Why does everyone keep parroting this? If he's famous in Korea, it would be super easy to pull up a name. K-entertainment has huge reach & super well-known worldwide. But this whole thread still no one knows what's this dude name is, fuck no he's not "super famous" in the slightest.
This comment is always posted when this gets reposted yet no one can ever tell me who they are.
It's literally a race to see who can post this comment first lol.
He is not a celebrity in Korea. My girlfriend has never heard of him or seen him before, and he shows up nowhere on the internet except for this video.
White gloves made it clear he was hiding that he was black. I was thinking maybe her friend/son was saying he was going to show her the mask but pranked her with someone else wearing it would make sense.

Every time this gets posted the explanation is that he's famous and that's what she was reacting to, not the fact he's black.

nice to know the context after all these years

*indicating all white people are anglos*
I ain't no bleeping anglo. German, Dutch, Norwegian and IRISH, no ANGLO. Where did that guy get the idiotic idea that White equals ANGLO. Otherwise the post was correct. Racists exist in all races/ethic groups.
>German >Irish You're anglo
Wrong, Anglo is short for Anglo-Saxon, English. Go ahead, take trip to Ireland and tell IRA members that they are Anglo. Evolution in action.
I'd bet a big part is it is genuinely shocking to see a black man in south korea
I lived in Japan for years. The first time I saw the video I was over there and I thought I would be surprised too. I only saw one black guy out and about outside of the people I knew from work. That last sentence nails it. Something might not startle me for any reason but if someone else next to me gasps or yells, it will startle me
I hate to say it, but if I see white hands grab me and then a black face behind the mask, I might squeal a bit also.
Kinda like.....OH SHIT, MICHAEL JACKSON LIVES!!

Welcome to Reddit
Bruh they just told you thatās not the case. Why go on this entire tangent to prove otherwise with zero contextā¦?
Ah I donāt think itās all about skin colour- itās just not someone she knows? Prob thought it was her mate under the mask or something.
But why make it innocent when we can make it about race
Is it staged?
Staged like a Jimmy Kimmel bit would be. He's a Celebrity in Korea. Edit: sam okyere
Tf people think this is Sam Okyere? It is [Joel Roberts](https://youtu.be/tb1AtbpAPrU)
Bruh a person who speaks the truth with the source and all and yet people still go upvoting the dumbass assuming every black person in Korea is Sam Okyereā¦
Not all of themā¦.just most of them
I don't know if he's a celeb, but he's definitely not Sam Okyere
That's not Sam Okyere
I googled Sam Okyere and don't get why people keep saying that in this thread. This guy doesn't look anything like Sam Okyere
That's definitely not Sam Okyere.
Who is he? I googled "Korean Celebrities" and got like 10,000 results.
Might want to add one minor detail that might narrow things down.
Korean Ironman?
Yes sir.
it didn't narrow it down at all
Korea has 10,000 Ironman celebrities?
Wait I wasn't supposed to just search ironman?
Search tall skinny high top cut Korean celebrity Ironman
This made me giggle way harder than it should have
I googled "african-american korean" and am still at a loss.
Is this a joke?
There's been a few threads in the last couple days which discussed the term "african-american" in American culture, its origins and purpose, and its changing interpretation and use over time. I assume it's a reference to that.

> American journalist called Idris Elba an African American source?
idris elba is british
It's not that strange lol when you consider that African-Americans have a unique culture that is separate both from the African countries they come from and from mainstream American culture.
I think itās just a mistake that a lot of people make and I wanted to confirm before correcting someone like a know-it-all.
Wait, people actually make this mistake?
Yeah, in America not every black person is from Africa but we have become accustomed to saying āAfrican Americanā because itās considered by many to be a general PC term for members of the black community yet itās often incorrect . Some people are still shy of the word āBlackā for whatever reason but itās all with positive intent to be respectful so itās not really a huge deal.
Exactly, and we all agreed that Africax-Americax was the appropriate terminology to use moving forward.
In Italian, this sounds like Afripenis Ameripenis if you say it out loud.
Troll level 9000
Hes not an African American lmao. He's a black dude in korea.
The Joke Explainer Has Arrived
Wellā¦.what if he is an African American that moved to Korea? Also, if he got a Korean passport would that make him African-American-Korean?
Heās from Ghana if I remember correctly.
Dude why would you search up African AMERICAN. This is why we get made fun of lol
Black people are like midgets in Mexico there.
Are there practically no midgets in Mexico?
Well, no, but an inordinate amount of them are employed by donkey shows and so most Mexicans probably don't see them or at least won't admit they've seen a midget because of the implication.
Are these midgets in danger?
Nobodyās in any danger. Itās the *implication*
It's an implication of Danger.
What an interesting and not quite innocent take. I would think one would need intimate knowledge of Mexican donkey shows for this. Unless you went down a really niche rabbit hole at 3 am. š
I googled it. I donāt want to rabbit hole. I only hope that I forget this knowledge.
Save me from this knowledge... is it what I think it is?..
You leave animal holes of any kind out of this please and thank you
Actually most Mexican midgets are luchadores like Mascarita Sagrada and would kick your ass
They would have to reach my ass first so...
If my years of American Education is correct, then Mexico is exactly like Mad Max: Fury Road but in Espanol
What does this mean lol
They're humans.
Ah, so theyāre pretty common.
They also are bullfighters and tour the country? https://www.altoromexico.com/index.php?acc=noticiad&id=36910
Bruh you saw an Asian woman and a black man in the same frame and automatically assumed he was Sam Okyere? Um....
he doesnt look like sam though
That's not Sam FYI
wtf are you talking about? Took me 10 seconds to google Sam Okyere and see he doesn't look even close to the guy in the video. Why lie like that?
I donāt think her reaction was staged but he obviously tried to prank her, thatās why they were filming
The prank was the reveal of who he is. It'd be like Robert Downey Jr. showing up in that mask on the streets of Boston and then taking it off. Maybe someone wouldn't be surprised at a sudden iron man but they would be surprised by The Iron Man.
Yes.

Exactly. It would be like if you went to the home of your childhood best friend on spring break and surprised their mom.
I figured she was surprised because she was expecting someone else, not because she's racist.
I believe that last time this was posted it was said that this guy is super famous in that country and the lady was star struck at the sight of him
Regardless, the reaction is priceless Happy October

She's definitely smiling but that man is not someone known in Korea at all.

What are you talking about? Iron Man is definitely well known in Korea.
I think it's Korea where black people are about as common as a Dodo bird so her reaction is understandable either way.
His hands are white though, so I'm sure that added to the surprise.
Those are gloves my friend
I mean yes they are but if she saw them in her periphery then she could have automatically assumed there would be a white face to go with the white hands, not even immediately realizing they were gloves.
After seeing this clip for *years* Iāve never noticed that detail

Yeah but Iron Man has this sweet love making playlist

White gloves made it clear he was hiding that he was black. I was thinking maybe her friend/son was saying he was going to show her the mask but pranked her with someone else wearing it would make sense. But hearing that she was star struck makes this all the better
I love the idea that he needed to wear white gloves to throw people off the trail. He could have literally worn any color gloves, including brown.
This is last gen old
He knew what he was doing- look at those hands
Well he is wearing fake white hands, it would throw me off too. He is impersonating a white person (white handing).
I think they were surprised because he is a known actor in Korea, not quite because he is Black. His name is **Joel Roberts**.
