im welsh/italian , If my desire for italy to win could be manufactured you could use it as rocket fuel
Hi there how’s it going
Pob lwc i'r Eidal, mae na lawer o bobl Gymraeg yn gobeithio byddwch yn ennill heno.
I'm probably in the minority here but with the amount of shit I've seen on the Internet bashing England I want them to win now.
As far as I'm concerned the countries that have a lisence to bully English sports fans are Wales, Scotland, Ireland Australia, NZ and to a lesser extent South Africa. Everyone else can do one.
When you've got keyboard bashing yanks weighing in on who deserves win the euros it's all gone a bit too far in my opinion.
Yeah I find it odd the anount of hate England gets. If Wales/Scotland/Ireland had made it to the finals, I imagine everyone in England would be happy for them. Nice to see the sentiment gets returned /s
I would have been over the moon if Wales and Scotland had progressed further than they did (yes I'm English), I was pleased as anything when Scotland qualified, celebrated just as much when they were put in group D with England, and felt heartbroken when they went out to early. (Same goes for Wales, always nice to have the home nation boys around)
The amount of anti England xenophobia I saw on my timeline on Sunday was just ridiculous, and trust me, people were deleted that night
I hate football so I really didn't care that England lost, but the amount of hate I've seen from Scotland, Wales etc is rather annoying, in other sports i would be the first to be cheering on Wales and Scotland etc, in the rugby (not a massive fan but my mrs is) we all were rooting for the British countries to win, I just don't get why its not reciprocated.
Everyone has license to bully England, they were the world's bully for a hundred years
Are we all going to carry on pretending that the rest of Europe weren't then?
It's funny how countries like France, Germany, Belgium, Italy etc. Have managed to come out of their colonial pasts smelling of roses. Especially since the latter three were all dabbling in supremacist and expansionist ideology rather more recently than the rest.
France certainly has not come out of their colonial past smelling of anything but shit. Macron's refusal to apologize for France's colonial occupation of Algeria and their long term military presence in North Africa are more recent examples of such.
The French are desperately hoping people won't realize they're still plundering West Africa.
Yeah I one hundred percent agree, but in terms of public opinion it's the UK who are branded as the super racist hyper colonisers, even by people who have committed similar or worse atrocities more recently.
That's where my whole stance on supporting England come from. Cause the likes of France Germany and Italy painting England as the baddies just seems hypocritical to me.
Never said I liked them either.
Haha fair enough
Those countries don’t seem to feel a God-given right to win though. They take part, they hope to win and they are disappointed when they don’t. But they don’t go in with delusions of grandeur thinking their mediocre team will win “just because”, even though they had their arse handed to them in the previous tournament.
It’s this entitlement that makes them a team I could never support. That and the sadly predictable vile racism that those guys who missed their penalties are now experiencing online from some of their “fans”. No doubt the same clueless fucks that were booing the anthems throughout the competition. Oh and the insufferable English media.
No, you’re deluded if you think England doesn’t take it to extremes. I assume you either don’t live in the UK or don’t get out much.
And Italy to a lesser extent
Bonus: Russia/the USSR
But sure, hate on England
You can pull whatboutism if you want but this conversation started with England. I've never claimed to harbor positive sentiments with other imperialist/colonialist powers. At the very least the English dont still rape their colonies in Africa like France does. Still, the simple fact that GB is the largest provider of independence days earns them a spot at the top of the pile.
You said England was the world's bully for a while but Italy also had an atrocious colonial history so
And just because England did worse things it doesn't cancel the ones Italy did
If you kill a man you're not "better" than the person who kills 2... It's still murder, none of it is ethically excusable so if you're going by the historical narrative, then none of the finalists are innocent
England did worse things than Italy?!?!?! They were fascists just a few decades ago
*Screams in Somali*
Yeah I meant "worse things" if we're talking about colonial empire-level atrocities, but if we're talking about home government then sure, Italy was 1000x worse
Italy didn’t reach England colonial levels because they didn’t have the power too. They would’ve done far worse if they got their hands on what England/Britain got. Pretty much all of Europe would’ve been worse with the usual exception of the Nordics
Of course we would've! I'm on the same page! Italy had a lot of untapped potential to go on an absolute rampage in Africa if not for their limited resources and incompetent chain of command, but they had the cruelty and drive necessary to be far worse than England just out of pure want for cruelty without any added benefits
That said, the fact that England had the power to behave like that is still deplorable for sure but other European countries would've undoubtedly done the same
Never said that it did. I said this conversation was about England.
Only one wi balls to stand up to hitler initially tho!!! ( along wi close pals Aussies, NZ, Canada and others) While rest of Europe buckled or sided to hitler! U must all be so proud of ur own achievements! Ps nobody has ever pushed Britain around !
Can't claim that when they left the Czechs to rot, they were waiting for the UK and the French to stick to the plan with the Little Entente but we know how that went. And flat out untrue, the English were being pushed around up until 44 in WW2 and were in serious trouble with Napoleon before that. Oh and how about all that Normam vocabulary in modern English, wonder how that got there.
Your post was removed as it wasn’t nice or constructive. Repeated bad behaviour will result in a temporary or permanent ban.
Italy used to own the UK
I wasn't referring to you in particular, obviously you're Welsh. It's everyone else on reddit who's turned me from being mostly indifferent to mildly in support of England.
Edit: just to add, after our defeat to Italy, the Italian fans on r/soccer were way more insufferable than any English fans I've come across. Welsh people would say they were happy with the performance and glad to not concede too many points against such a class team and then in swoop the Italians with "that was like our c team our main team wild destroy you lol". Fuck those guys.
As an English person living in Wales, thank you :)
I never cared about the result of the match, but theres been way to much hate directed at Englands players from the english fans, so yeah im pretty much saying fuck some of the fans and idc who won
You boys should see the shite we are getting over on r/scotland for even hinting at the idea we dont support england, and this meme is your top post right now.
You know how many aneurysms that would cause at the top of our page?
I genuinely expected it to be similar sentiment here. It's nice to learn where you really stand in this better together UK 😂
I'm English with only a passing interest in football. If we win its going to be unbearable levels of media smugness and overblown sense of achievement. If it happens can I become Welsh. My nan was from Pontypridd. That must count for something.
The more the merrier!
No sorry. If you're English and they win, you will forced to celebrate like this.
Enjoy your win 😄
Welcome boyo. Now you have to eat a leek and start saying 'now, in a minute'.
Pontypridd is the heart of Wales . No debate .
I hate that Boris is saying he'll call a holiday if England wins but if Wales gets this far he wouldnt mention it. Same with Scotland. Its only important when its England.
Well since Wales never got that far, that's just conjecture - reckon you're right though
He’d intend to, except he’d fuck it up and turn up in a Manx TT shirt.
Nah I’m really rooting for England to win because I know if they were out my English friends would want Wales to win.
I see a lot people going in deep with all the things England has done wrong. It’s just a football match it isn’t that deep and comes across really petty imo.
That’s interesting, I know my English friends would *not* be supporting Wales!
Same here, live with two English people who’s hobby it is is to constantly bash Wales, despite living here
Same. My English friends talk shit about Wales a lot more than we do them.
I don't particularly care about football, but I know in rugby it's a good feeling when Wales are good enough that my English friends want Wales to lose.
Of course, when you're in direct competition in a tourney like the 6 nations, you want Wales to lose some games so England have a better chance. It's (generally) not out of spite.
There is a reason for that. They'd want us to win because they don't consider us to be a rival and don't take us seriously in football. They just see it as cute when we do well, "Aw bless Wales are really trying hard this time, I hope they do well".
You'd notice a very different attitude if this was rugby union, where the English most definitely take us seriously and the rivalry is much more mutual.
But anyway, it's just a sporting rivalry at the end of the day, there's no malice! As a neutral I just want to see a good game and for it to be won fair and square, comprehensively. No dodgy decisions for people to complain about, just brilliant to watch football with the best team winning. Good luck to both teams I say.
As an English person living in Wales this is lovely to hear! Not a big football fan at all but would have been great to have won last night. If it was Wales or Scotland in the final I’d have wanted them to win!
Funny how much people don’t want England to win, but support English teams
2 different brands, so makes sense.
Well, your wish was granted. Red white and green for the win!
it's coming Rome boys
I normally would support Italy, but somehow their fans have been even worse than the English fans this year
I mean their fans literally pissed and puked on the Welsh fans back in 2003. How any Welsh football fans can be happy they won is beyond me.
Yes. Both sides have cunts. If you don’t support England because of their cunty fans it’s understandable. Not supporting England _at all_ because you’re Welsh is also totally understandable.
But to be _actively_ support Italy blows my fucking mind when their fans treated us so poorly. There were kids in the crowd that night with their hair soaked in spit. Their ‘ultras’ are abhorrent.
I’m not sure it’s Italy people are supporting here so much as simply “the team that England are playing against”. If that team happens to be Italy then so be it. Because it’s not so much about wanting that team to win: it’s about wanting England to lose.
A subtle difference perhaps but it is a difference.
You should check out the scenes outside Wembley stadium and at Trafalgar Square today .
As an Englishman living in Cardiff I get why people want England to lose. Our fans are wankers tbf. The bitterness of some people wanting us to lose goes a bit far for me though but it’s ok it’s cool.
What I find super ironic is speaking about historic stuff where England has abused Wales and the welsh (fair) and then turning round and saying people should get over slavery.
Or even funnier is those who bash England at every opportunity and then say the senydd should be abolished. Like surely that is a next level mental gymnastics.
What I find strange is people bashing the English for empire on here like we didn’t play our part in.
Even worse on r/Scotland they unironically claim that they were actually more akin to a colony than a coloniser

It's going Rome
The England team, manager, players and 90 per cent of the fans are good honest people who don't deserve all of the abuse.
I am English myself. I would like to see 10 per cent of the "fans" taken on a ship out into the ocean and thrown overboard. The yobs, drunks, haters and racists make me sick.
Please don't hate all of England just because of a minority of sickening scumbags
Pam Ydy e ‘garu’ yma a ddim ‘caru’?
Gwrando, rydw i ddim wedi siarad cymraeg llawer ers i mi adael ysgol wyth mlynydd yn ôl, a mae google translate ddim yn perffaith 😅

Dylse fe fod yn ‘caru’ yn lle ‘garu’ ond mae treigladau yn lifestyle choice ta beth
Haha siwr o fod 💪🏻
Thank you from Italy!
Wales are my favourite international football team, then I have 209 joint second favourite teams, and then my next favourite is England
Well since I’m half English half Welsh I’m kinda rooting for England, but it’s not like I have that much interest in football anyway. But if it was rugby, I would be backing Italy 100%!
I used to support all the U.K. teams, I’ll probably just stop now. Not hoping you do badly or angry thing petty but I just can’t be arsed
Couple of points to consider if you are a rational person…
Not everyone in Wales wants England to lose.
The reason there is anti-English sentiment in Wales has a long history (like it does in Ireland and Scotland) and it’s down to real, tangible things. In living memory my 90 year of father can tell you he was caned in school for speaking welsh - a Westminster directive to destroy the welsh culture.
Historically the welsh were banned from holding political office, restricting welsh children’s education, stopping welsh people from buying property in English towns.
And the mainstream and accepted bigotry against the welsh continues in modern culture. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/mar/15/anti-welsh-bigotry-eddie-jones-england-brexit and don’t even get me started on the coverage any welsh sporting success gets compared to English.
Anyway… I hope England win. Southgate has created a great team and culture there. From the kneeling as a protest against racism, to the camaraderie. Good luck!
Also, even if you ignore all of that, Wales got to the semi finals of Euro 2016 and the UK press didn't give a shit. The Sun even tried to claim that the success of the Welsh team was because of English football.
Basically, they can fuck right off if they think I'm supporting them.
I understand that sentiment.
I remember back when Wales beat Brazil in ‘91 at the national stadium. I put on Radio 5 live and all it was was wall to wall coverage of the English game, a loss against Germany. Literally note one mention in the 45 min drive home. If it had been the other way around it would have been front page news for days.
It's not just football, rugby is just as bad.
>Here we are today for Wales Vs Ireland, it's 30 mins to kick off, but before we talk about that here is 27 minutes on why England are the best team in the world and why this time they will definitely win the tournament...
Agreed. I think it’s worse with Rugby.
A story - I was at the Wales v England 5 nations game at Wembley in 1999, when Scott Gibbs scored that amazing winning try. A friend got ticked from Bath Rugby club, so we were sitting with Bath ruby English fans. They were relentlessly mocking us during the game especially as Wales were playing catch-up mostly. When Scott scored that winning try and Neil Jenkins converted, we went wild! The Bath fans got REALLY upset. One tried to take my scarf. They were very bad losers… anyway, we got back to Cardiff later that evening and I went straight to my office on the balcony of the Castle Arcade and faxed a taped up loop of 3 sheets of paper reading just “32-31” to the bath rugby club fax number. The loop went around maybe a hundred times and we laughed harder every loop.
I have no idea, but I still picture the bath rugby officials opening up their office with a 20 yard fax across the floor of 32-31 written a hundred times.
Not sure how you can elucidate those correct premises, that the English are prejudiced against the Cymreig and come to the conclusion that you support England
That’s a good point.
I support the English football team in this instance because I like Gareth Southgate, and in general the English team. I like that the team is multicultural, the management and players take the knee against racism and supported LGBT causes.
I don’t like the mob of Brexit douchbags who are currently smashing up London.
To be fair, I’m torn.
Eh maybe I'm biased becuase I'm of Irish family but the shit that happened in ireland doesn't come close to what happened in Wales and Scotland. Scots were massive colonisers btw😂
It’s not a competition. I was specifically making a comparison about there being a “long history”, and in that case the are fully comparable.
Serves you right for being fussy eaters
I’m the same, used to support wales, no more.
Sold my house and bought a provisional ticket on Bezos’ rocket in case England win. Because we won’t hear the fucking end of it.
Cancelled the sale because thankfully Italy pulled through.
Honestly, whenever Wales are playing, I want you to win, because I want our neighbours to prosper too, this whole thing is so pathetic. I'm out.
nah, eng all the way this time
Honestly, this is a strange attitude. England are your closest neighbours and really don’t have any kind of ill feeling towards the Welsh in sport. It’s a one way street.
I've never called an Englishman a sheep-shagging cunt with an incomprehensible language. Frankly, sports rivalry is an incredible level of restraint.
Go read the BBC chat pages after wales play a game, total hatred from the English towards us.
The best one I have seen after the Turkish game was "How dare Wales have 3 pundits, they are a second rate side".
Come on England! Let’s do it for Great Britain!
Honestly I have no problem getting behind this England team, with being boo'd for the Knee, having a cohesive team that are honestly all likeable and professional and SouthGate at the helm it's honestly the most presentable and humble team England have out together.
Yes but now were all cheering for England because there the onely country in Britain that is in the finals
we're bloody well not
The Welsh are absolutely rattled by England’s success
No, we just remember how little you lot gave a shit when we reached the semis in 2016.
We couldn't give a shit in all honesty. It's a sporting rivalry that's been going on for years. It's nothing more than that.
English are absolutely rattled by Welsh indifference
if you are so indifferent why do you have over ten posts about it?
And that's a permanent ban.
We're shitting ourselves. On the one hand, if England lose the fan's will never shut up about the injustice of how they got robbed but if they win they'll never shut up about how this is the best thing to happen to the UK since Greggs.
Nothing against the team mind, they're good and I expect they'll do themselves justice, but it'll be insufferable either way.
Haha couldn't have put it better myself! It's a lose-lose situation. The one person who I would definitely have sympathy for though is Gareth Southgate. Seems like a very likable and down-to-earth kind of guy. I'd be happy for him, but it wouldn't outweigh the sick inducing brown nosing from the English media that would undoubtedly happen.
He seems nice and a few of the players seem nice. Some of the fans seem nice too.
But for them to get what they want means all those brainless pricks who boo the anthems, shout racist insults and have an entitled expectation of victory would also get what they want… as would the smug English media. So it’s a no from me.
Pathetic, get over it.
I wouldn't take it personally. It's just a sporting rivalry. Nothing more
Na its coming home
why is Germany hosting in 2024, then?
I’m Welsh and I support any of the home nations in sports. It’s only in the six nations that I don’t want England to win! Haha
Fun Holyhead area
I used to live there, funnily enough
Small country mentality
England is next door so I’m going to support them in next year’s World Cup
I think the street trashing post game is shocking. Did anyone else see the video of Leicester Square?
Looking to meet new people
