At least Riku delivers his catchphrase very well, plus it's used in suitable scenarios instead of being out of place. His catchphrase has a lot more impact.
Because the different and contrast, between japanese and engrish.
if kengo say "smile~ smile~" in perfect english it wouldn't be as bad, in fact it would be impressive.
Also, smile smile was not always said in the best of context. For example.
The first, smile smile context was kengo speaking a motivational speach to a plant.
I mean why motivatinal speech? Why not the simple?
"you thirsty? Here have a water. smile smile."
Instead kengo speak with full expectation on the plant, as if someday the plant would become doctor.
I know it's subtle, but this is a good lesson in writing,
it is to differentiate a person who kind and caring with nature. And a lunatic that speaks to a plant.
Not really. Riku's catchphrase is catchy and most of the time it's delievery well by both situation and by Hamada's acting.
Kengo's had the issue of Raiga's acting being a bit rough in the beggining (he got better though) and his catchphrase feeling overused.
That's not really the point of Smile Smile tho, Kengo's stated before that he wants people to smile even while going through tough times. It's not that he think smiling will solve everyone's problems, it's that smiling will give people the strength to face their problems head on
I'm not saying this phrase was written/used particularly well or anything, I'm just saying you sorta misinterpreted it
Riku's catchphrase is more logical than kengo's one.
Riku's catchphrase at least give motivational support while kengo most of the time sound like a maniac especially in ep 4.
