Because the torsion bars are basically springs that function by twisting a metal rod, this rod it mounted rigidly on one side of the hull, and to the axle at the other end. This means that the wheels need to be slightly offset so the torsion bars fit.
Haha.
Seriously though, you're right. I did look into basically an Off switch for my house; leaves on all essentials, my security cams, etc. But old house, weird wiring, etc ... Was already a bitch to get my backup generators just right. Would have been a whole thing and I got sidetracked by one of my many other survivalist-prepper projects, lol.
It's one of those things where if it's close enough, your brain doesn't care until somebody makes a point of it :P
For instance - yknow the Nintendo Switch logo? [It's actually asymmetric too.](https://preview.redd.it/eprenkbph5oz.png?auto=webp&s=f639f2b3d3091528490bb64e2af1989d5fce94d6)
There ain't a damn thing on that tank that's centered and that's why I love it.
Except the driver. They get to sit dead center on top of the transmission.
Isn't it for the loader instead? I should check but he's the one manoeuvering shells in the turret after all..
But yeah, turret is off centered on the hull and gun is off centerend on the turret... I belie the gun is centered to the hull tho..
No i believe it's offset to the right. The only reason i can think of is that the gunner and the commander are on the same sude of the breech while the loader is alone so still has more space then his mates.
Looked up a picture to be sure!

And then there's the [AMX EVEN 90](https://imgur.com/gjBRztT) which in typical French fashion just gives a big middle finger to the concept of symmetry and does its own thing.
In a funny kind of way it kind of goes full circle because although the turret is off-centre, the gun is also mounted off-centre to the turret, making the gun almost centerline to the hull.
IIRC that was the intent. By putting such a big gun in such a small tank they had to do something weird to make the turret ergonomics reasonable while also keeping the recoil forces manageable
Discovered this while making a Panzer III mode from Takom. Initially got very confused and thought they moulded it incorrectly and proceeded to spend hours of research trying to determine if it was in fact correct.
Look at the green things I drew on the first pic, for example gap between sprocket and 1st road wheel is slightly bigger on one side
On the second pic you can see bottom of the hull and thicker places where road wheels should be; if you look closely they aren't in line on both sides
When you see the difference once you won't be able to un-see it
Torsion bar suspension works in a way that forces asymmetry, basically there is a long rod going through entire tank behind every wheel, so they have to be slightly moved on one side
Tanks that use torsion bar suspension are asymmetric, except for a few
superior amx30 coming in
I know and I wish I wouldn't, it hurts my eyes and brain
The turret ring isn’t centered on the chassis either
Basically none, or only very few, of the German tanks had centered turret rings because of their turret drive design, iirc.
Why? It's really not a big deal.
It is if you are ocd
*anal retentive
That works too
constipation?
Not if you’re a functioning adult, no
why?

thanks for the answer!
The Pz. IV turret is off center the M1 Abrams turret isn‘t symmetrical the main guns of the Tiger II and Maus are off center
stop.. please.. it’s hurting me
The guns on the Mark 4 male (and female) aren’t center either.
Aaaargh
You poor soul, wait until you hear of the m3 lee
The Abram’s gun is also slightly off center as well, off to the left slightly if I remember correctly.
So if the gun is off center, would it effect the turret seating ring?
I have no idea personally, but I’d assume it doesn’t since the Americans haven’t changed it after so long
Please, stop.

Thank you, now I need to measure it
Oh yeah? Well, did you lock your front door this morning? Are you sure your oven is off? See, we can choose mildly infuriating violence too! ;-)

B/c you don't want to deal with manually resetting it, and you certainly don't want your alarm system to have the ability to turn on your gas.
Jokes on you, I don’t check the locks, and I have an induction stove so it doesn’t matter if it gets left on
Lmao this comment section has devolved into open warfare. OP is a Machiavellian menace😂
The M3 Lee has everything off center
Ok but that's actually kinda cool. This is everyone thinking it's symmetrical. But it's not. And your brain goes "but whyyyy?"

this is called visual compensation where things aren't quite true-to-life
Interesting, is it off center from the turret or the traversal gear? I'm curious because wouldn't firing the gun harm the traversal gear?
I think the turrets are slightly off center of the hull and the gun is slightly off center of the turret? Idk, it’s all just some kraut space magic.
Surely it should be Tiger II and THE Maus.
Hey man, let's count it and it's prodigy (your mother)
*Die Maus. *Achtung Baby!*
no… no… please… my dreams are fading
Fuck you ill never unsee this shit man what the fuck
I'm reporting this sub for harassment and fake news
Why?
Abrams hull is also asymmetrical. https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/M1A2_Abrams-1024x332.jpg
Why does the torment of your fellow people bring you joy?
Sad part, I served on an abrams for almost a decade and didn't realize that fact until shortly after I left the military
Sea Vixen! https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e6/Sea_Vixen_of_892_NAS_on_USS_Forrestal_%28CVA-59%29_c1962.jpg
Tiger Ps turret is ever so slightly off center
The tiger 1 turret is asymmetric from above and the king tigers gun mantelet is not a perfect circle
And Panzer IV's gun is placed slightly to the side
The entire turret of the Pz. IV is off center
The M3 Lee/Grant has entered the chat.
There ain't a damn thing on that tank that's centered and that's why I love it. Except the driver. They get to sit dead center on top of the transmission.
The gun is also offset on the front glacis plate to give the gunner a bit more space!
Isn't it for the loader instead? I should check but he's the one manoeuvering shells in the turret after all.. But yeah, turret is off centered on the hull and gun is off centerend on the turret... I belie the gun is centered to the hull tho..

> *not a perfect circle* So *Tool* then?
Man im building a 1/35 scale model by Tamiya right now and I thought I had assembled it wrong once I realized its assymetrical.
I realized it the same way lol
Huh, I always wondered how they made it symetrical despite the torsion bars. I guess the answer is they just didn't.
Haha, nice try. I don't give a fuck.
I replied to wrong comment, sorry
May both sides of your pillow be forever warm

We could make a tank horror movie with that... thing.
It's french, that tells you anything you need to know.
I get it. It's trendy to act upset when things aren't symmetrical. But people act like it's such a huge deal and I'm tired of seeing it lol.
I hate you. Still not as annoying as Abrams' turrets though.
Are you aware that the Abrams also has asymmetric tracks?
So do all tanks with Torsion Bar suspension
Not all, but just most.
If i remember correctly. The Panthers too.
Anything with torsion bars
except T-64, according to the sketchy part of my brain
Why?
Torsion bar has to (most of the time) be the entire width of the vehicle
To make space for the aforementioned torsion rods. They go all the way across the hull, so you need to offset the wheels
I love this post and the comments!
Wow that's horrible!. Someone should stop these German guys, they sound like they are real baddies.
What torsion bar does to a mf
The Leopard 2(A6) has this too.
Still the best tank ever made.
You mf delete that rn
After i read comment i think i swim to the deepest of iceberg
Foch Yoh!
Now I'll never get to sleep
Discovered this while making a Panzer III mode from Takom. Initially got very confused and thought they moulded it incorrectly and proceeded to spend hours of research trying to determine if it was in fact correct.
I could've lived my whole life not knowing this.
I hope your testiest are burned off in a vat of your own stomach acids
Peak german design
Every tank that uses torsion bar suspension is laid out like this, because the actual torsion bars go the entire width of the vehicle
That's pretty cool. Didn't know that before
I can't see it, where's the asymmetry?
(is this joke, or serous question?)
It's serious 😅
Look at the green things I drew on the first pic, for example gap between sprocket and 1st road wheel is slightly bigger on one side On the second pic you can see bottom of the hull and thicker places where road wheels should be; if you look closely they aren't in line on both sides When you see the difference once you won't be able to un-see it
OMG Now I see Tbh I wouldn't have seen it in my life if you hadn't told me haha
I realized it only because I was making a Pz. III model once 😅
Hey guess what, about 90% of the tanks that use torsion bar suspension are like this too
Why the hell is it asymmetrical?!
Torsion bar suspension works in a way that forces asymmetry, basically there is a long rod going through entire tank behind every wheel, so they have to be slightly moved on one side
[удалено]
I definitely have asymmetrical balls. Testicular Torsion is a bitch.
Most torsion bar tanks are asymmetrical. Reality is often dissapointing.
"Why is this thing like that?" "Because it just is like that."
Most torsion bars are as long as the width of the hull, so the corresponding roadwheel arms have to be slightly offset for them to fit in parallel.
Millions of autists cried out in terror.
FCK U
.......... ***FUC-***
NOOOOOOO!!!! MY OCDDD???!!!!!
OH FUCK YO-
you ruined my day mr...
everyone on this sub knows that its an M60
The more you know
Why would you do this to me
I know it’s because of the torsion bar suspension but it still makes me uncomfortable.
fuck off
Look at the leo2a6 from above. Ewww
Wait until you find out turrets on tanks like Leopard 2 are not centered. Cant unsee it.
Is it just me, or does the first photo show 6 road wheels on each side?
It does, which is correct.
Panzer III had six road wheels from version E onwards Version A had five and versions B, C and D eight
But why
Torsion bar suspension.
Day ruined. Thanks OP.
Most tanks are not simetrical
Who knew Blohm und Voß also made tanks
Probably so it could more easily take the 3rd reicht when in turns on street corners.
Fuck you man
I have learnt something new today! Tanks for sharing it
But y tho?
Like most of the tanks designs. Pretty normal here, welcome to TankPo**
I hope both sides of your pillow is hot.
I think most are when you get down to the details
Thank you for both making and ruining my day <3
I am now irrationally annoyed.
I am now irrationally annoyed.
I will never forgive you this.
Man, there must have been some apoplectic German Engineers over this.
So does the Bradley
The left and right side windows are at a different distance from the front plate.
no
Anything that uses torsion bar really
That’s r/oddlysatisfying
Mf's really be out here not knowing how torsion bar suspension works
Still a good looking tank.
God fucking damn you.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
OCD sucks.
Even if its asymmetrical, I still love the panzer iii
Screw you
would this alter how its theoretical armour works?
Why would it?
