You frequently find Kody's date of birth given online as January 1969, but I think he was born in January 1968.
- The index "United States Public Records, 1970-2009" on familysearch(dot)org gives his date of birth as 19 January 1968.
- The index "U.S., Index to Public Records, 1994-2019" on ancestry(dot)com gives his date of birth as January 1968.
- He was a freshman at Lovell High School during the 1982-1983 school year and a junior during the 1984-1985 school year.
- Meri has said that when they were married, she was 19 and Kody was 22.
This means Kody could have served a 24-month mission and returned as early as January 1989.
You, m'dear, are **on your game!**
You've got some hard evidence there and I suspect you're right, which makes the entire line of inquiry moot. Thank you!
So Meri got brought up all AUB and polygamist, probably told she needed to be one of several wives and have all the kids she could jave, and she was just over 18,5 when she met someone three years older, just new to the cult (so he knew more than polygamy) who immediately woo-ed her, proposed just two months after getting to know her, and marry her 4 months after that. She went from not knowing the guy to being married at 19 within half a year, with someone who consciously chose polygamy. Then her brother, who married a monogamous mormon, visits and his wife (Meri's older Sister in Law) sees Kody and is in love at first sight. They end up divorced, converting to AUB as well, and marries your husband almost \_on\_ your birthday (and her mother is suddenly also your new mother in law by marriage to Wynn) , after leaving your brother. manages to get pregnant first, and invades the only bit of space you ever had to your own likings, since you went from your parents directly into marriage, and were in control of something in your life (your houshold) for the first ime. Things heat up, some other way too young girl is considered to join, but not yet 18, so that falls through. Then the young pretty blond girl who has been eyeing your husband for a few years already while you were friends with her, somehow convinces your husband to settle (in his mind) for her, just because he needed ties to the church elders. After three years of having someone for yourself (for the first time in your life after living among bunches and bunches of people who constantly need to share each othter), you're suddenly sharing a house again with two others, your ex sister in law and the young blonde with the powerfull last name and connections, having to agree on how to run a household, at an age where generally you are living with housemates and fight over the household but you are at least not spiritually tied to them the rest of your life. Both of the other wives also manage to fall pregnant earlier than you, while you are already (probably) trying for four years. At this point you are just 23-24.
This sounds like a lot to digest for a 23-24 year old who has been probably raised pretty sheltered untill suddenly at 18 this man was in front of her, and on his knee within two months.
I'm exmo and have been for a bit. The age change happened recently, so you are correct that he should have been on his mission through Jan 1990 at minimum.
I don't think his parents status in the church should have or would have impacted his mission..other than possibly causing a faith crisis for Kody. He wouldn't have been forced to come home over his parents. Most likely the mission president would have pressured him to stay.
I'd be interested to know why he came home early. It seems like he also like transitioned super quick to AUB, maybe this was something that his parents had been talking about prior to his mission? The mormon church does a good job distancing from polygamy and teaching that it's against the church..so that faith jump seems extreme as well..
I was also interested to know why Kody might have come home early and thinking about his quick transition to the AUB when I posted this, primarily because I get the sense that Kody is less committed to "the principle" than Robyn, Meri and even Janelle. But I think /u/AfterSevenYears solved it for us by pointing out that Kody's date of birth is likely January 1968.
And /u/SandyBeech60 reminded us that Kody's great-grandfather was a polygamist and that Kody says in their book that his mother explained celestial marriage to him when he was 14 years old. This brought to my mind the fact that Kody is a cousin to both Christine and Robyn's first husband, David Jessop. So it appears that Kody's family may have been a little closer to modern-day polygamy and polygamists than others.
I've been thinking about this because polygamy seems to have *really* hurt most if not all of the adults -- and most certainly all of the children -- on *Sister Wives.* And much of that goes back to the choices of people like Bonnie Barber and Winn Brown, who by all accounts appear to have been educated, accomplished, and in mature monogamous marriages when they became polygamists.
It's inevitably going to have a negative, multigenerational effect on their descendants and, while I understand that their lives may have resulted in them being a little closer to modern day polygamy than the overwhelming majority of other people, I'm still very curious as to why they -- and Janelle - would have made that choice at a time when there was so much evidence of how harmful the lifestyle is to women and children.
Kodys Grandmother on his Mothers side maiden name was Allred. I believe Winn married Bobbie when Kody was explained about celestial marriage but I have nothing to back that up just my gut instinct.
I think we have to remember the faith bit of it though. Like if they joined the LDS faith not too far removed from polygamy then I could see why they would still see it as acceptable.
It wouldn't be a huge leap, in that respect.
I know that at least one of Kody’s sisters remained in the mainstream church. I’ve not met her but she lives less than 2 miles from me. I see her pop up in my “people you may know” on Facebook. She’s Facebook friends with people from my husband’s side because they used to be in the same LDS ward.
Since we don’t know when Winn married Bobbie, it’s my opinion that they was AUB before they admit it. Kody in the book stated he was 14 when his Mom explained celestial marriage. The Double Dollar ranch was Kodys great grandfather who was a polygamist in 1902. Rulon Allred noted they had AUB established in Wyoming, it’s my belief the ranch is what Rulon referred to.
Thank you for this!
Do you happen to know the status of the ranch after Winn's death?
I've been wondering if Kody stands to inherit (although I think Genielle is still alive ?)
I've also wondered if Janelle may stand to inherit through her mother?
I’m not sure, I’ve tried to find that answer. People has said that Kodys brother Tim inherited it but I can’t verify that.
I’m pretty sure that Sheryl wasn’t included to own any of the ranch
Bobbie lists her address as the ranch so I think she’s she living there.
Because of how the school years are split, it can happen. If you were born in Sept 1 (going by Texas, the cut off is Aug 31) then, you would graduate at 18 in May/June and leave on your mission at 19 in Septish.
The delay isn't that great.

Kody’s brother Curt did not join AUB but became some kind of evangelical Christian. I’m not sure about his other siblings.
I know another one of his (don’t remember his name) was polygamist but I’m not sure if he was specifically AUB

There is no reason the children would HAVE to leave because the parents did.
Thank you for clarifying that!

Are Sheryl (and Genielle) no longer living on the ranch then?
Sheryl passed away. Genielle and Bobbie still lives there.
Oh, that's right -- I should have remembered that!
It’s hard to keep up 😁
The earliest he is allowed to go on a mission is 18 years of age, not 19.
That’s the current rule in the Mormon church, but in the 1980s the age was 19.
I know there have been some relatively recent changes with respect to missions. Do you know if that was the case in 1987?
No, I stand corrected! The age for men did not drop to18 until 2012 thanks to President Monson. I was wrong on that.
Thank you for double checking -- much appreciated!
I went to high school with boys who left on their missions soon after graduating, still 18, and we're only gone for one year.
