Internationally, Somaliland is considered an autonomous region of Somalia, and a Federal Member State of Somalia. De facto, Somaliland is an independent nation with it's own government, armed forces, etc. The reason for such independence is the start of the **Somali National Movement** in 1981, a militia founded in London and focused on overthrowing the Barre regime. With support from Ethiopia, they focused on mostly northern Somalia. The subsequent counter-insurgency efforts by the Somali government led to a policy of genocide of the northern Isaaq clan, with an estimated 50,000 deaths.

Somaliland regained independence nearly 31 years ago. It’s a de facto state so it tries to runs as a country. Somalia controls some parts of “eastern Somaliland”. As someone who doesn’t believe in the Somaliland project anyways, I still have to give em props as they’ve managed to rebuild their cities from rubble after the civil war and create an element of stability. It’s up to Somalia rn to try and convince them that this project isn’t the way and we must come together as one.

[deleted]

Regained independence from whom? You don’t get independence just because you say so. The only institutions that matter, FGS, UN, literally the entire world less Taiwan don’t recognise them so dunno how you can say they regained anything.

[deleted]

Somaliland became a country in 26 June 1960 only for them to unite with Italian Somaliland to form Somalia in 1 July 1960.That’s why they say “regained independence” from Somalia instead of “gained independence”. And it’s not hard for a state to gain independence lol. Every state has an Independence Day from US federal states to actual countries. It’s recognition that matters, which Somaliland does not have.

Canuck_guy007

It depends on who you ask. Despite being unrecognized by the UN, Somaliland considers itself a fully functioning independent country with its own currency, army, government and issues its own travel visas via Somaliland diplomatic offices abroad. The Somali central government collapsed in 1991 so there was never a chance to formally dissolve the union through proper channels. Somalia on the other hand claims Somaliland as part and parcel of its territory. It’s a complex issue that has yet to be resolved.

Somaliland is absolutely nothing like Iraqi Kurdistan for starters its made up of ethnic Somalis just like the rest of the country, moreover; it's not even unique or special in its autonomy. There are several other "states" based on clan lines that are functionally just as independent from the federal government. The only thing that makes Somaliland different from the others is that they try to get legitimacy from colonial history and borders which when talking about clan states adds insult to injury and spits on the graves of those who lived and suffered under colonial rule.

“Historically independent” imagine being proud of British somaliland… who the fuck cares what colonized states these Europeans made. Somalis are 1 and should be a United country, not divided by Europeans. The British already gave away NFD region to Kenya and galbeed is still occupied by Ethiopia. Imagine wanting to further divide Somalia

_sad_individual

Somaliland will never be recognized internationally. They only have the balls to speak up cause our government is a circus. But insha Allah when Somalia becomes a proper government. They will put these secessionist in prison for treason. No country would allow a big chunk of their country to secede. Wether its spain, Russia, USA with texas or any other country.

No, Iraqi and Kurds have different genetics and culture while somalilanders and Somalis have bin mixing for millenias that they have the same genetics, culture, and religion. Somaliland just wants to separate for economic reasons and what a crazy dictator did to them 30 years ago.

qlmo

We haven’t been “mixing”. We are literally the same ethnic group with the same direct ancestors and same language. Every clan that exists in Somaliland exists in other parts of Somaliweyn.

[deleted]

When you say “mixing for millennias” you make it sound like we came from two different sources.
