1. As had local supports so harder to defeat until they turned on the people ex: Ceelbuur was okay with AS presence for long time until recently. 2. These folks were funded. But by who? External or internal or both. 3. No uniform, easily camouflage so was hard to fight them without proper equipments. 4. Lack of defense from previous admin. Don't even think they tried to fight with AS. Basically cohabited. No major efforts made. There's many factors to why. Use common sense.

I have some inside information. Farmajo did it for couple reasons but the most important reasons were, we needed more men and better logistic for long term. Lastly he was trying to convince western countries to help him. They refused many times and I think we all know why. He made a big move that pissed everyone off and that was the 5k troops. Realizing this, they decided to help only to librate some lands. They refused jubbaland and konfur galbeed.

There are reports that Khawarij has fled Xarardheere. It is rumoured that before leaving the area, they ordered the inhabitants of Xarardheere to leave the city. The reports added that the Khawarij fled to villages outside Xarardheere. Still unconfirmed though.
