So did you in me not ess? I thought I could understand much less Russian, I guess the basic words are similar.

Fleerode

Well, you sorta understood the words correctly, but contextually you got it wrong. Literal translation of the sentence would sound like that: Но (But) Если (If) У меня (In Me) Нет (Don’t have) Эсс (Ass) More natural translation is: But what if I don’t have an ass? From what I’ve heard, Russian has the most complex grammar compared to other Slavic languages, so while it is fairly easy to understand the words for a Slavic language speaker, it is hard to interpret them correctly.

North_Library3206

Unironically learned something new from this - that Georgia and Armenia have their own writing system instead of latin/cyrillic. I had no idea

sertack

Turkey borders with 8 nations and 7 different alphabet

Someone4121

Bulgaria - Cyrillic Greece - Greek Syria/Iraq/Iran - Arabic Azerbaijan - Latin Armenia - Armenian Georgia - Georgian Do you mean to separate the different versions of the Arabic script used by Arabic vs Farsi or am I missing something?

sertack

yeah i count Iran too

gerginborisov

Maybe they are including Cyprus via the unrecognised Northern Cyprus?

Ep1cOfG1lgamesh

If that was the case it would still be Greek though I think the Persian script explanation is more accurate

Brief-Preference-712

You’re correct

sterexx

Oh interesting, Persian’s script has a few extra characters. Most of them are the same as another letter except instead of one dot, they have a cluster of three And one of them is the same as another character but it’s got a little extra stroke parallel to the top stroke Didn’t know! Makes sense. The thing I found on google says the Armenian script has been used to write persian as well! I was also curious what persian was written in pre-islam and it was (various versions of) the pahlavi script, which descended from aramaic script. cool

DragonBank

And 2/3 of their border is water.

waterfall5555

That's really saying something

CaptainCanuck15

They don't share a writing system. They each have their own unique one.

North_Library3206

Oh sorry, that was meant to say writing ***system******s***

defnotbisex

ok i’ll comment france

PopoloGrasso

It's spelled comment but pronounced almost the same to Spanish "cómo," which I think is just plainly ridiculous

Lukkazx

This is plainly wrong it's pronounced completely different

PopoloGrasso

probably but french kɔmɑ̃ does sound a lot more like spanish komo to my untrained ears than english kɑmɛnt lol

evanbartlett1

They don't sound incredibly different - they're different languages so have different vowel sounds, inflections and nasal usage, but hearing them next to each other makes is pretty clear that the two languages are fairly closely related. Maybe your ear isn't perfectly trained - but it would be silly to focus on their differences over their similarities. You're good.

Dihydrogen-monoxyde

Dear Map maker, FYI Switzerland has 4 official languages. Belgium has 2 Finland has 2 Luxemburg, not sure but I think 2 Thank you. Danke, Kiitos, Tak, Merci, etc .... edit: Format

Ok-SyllabuddyRedact

Finland only in theory has two. Less than 5% use it in their daily lives. In the future Finland will only have one official language. It's only a matter of time.

AV196

Norway has two equal languages written across the country. “How” in the more traditional Norwegian language is “korleis”.

Em… what? The first, Qazaq had 42 letters: А а Ә ә Б б В в Г г Ғ ғ Д д Е е Ё ё Ж ж З з И и Й й К к Қ қ Л л М м Н н Ң ң О о Ө ө П п Р р С с Т т У у Ұ ұ Ү ү Ф ф Х х Һ һ Ц ц Ч ч Ш ш Щ щ Ъ ъ Ы ы І і Ь ь Э э Ю ю Я я Where: - *В, Ё, Ф, Ц, Ч, Ъ, Ь, Э* are not native for Qazaq and mostly from Russian. - some letters represent two sounds or more: *Ю, Я, Ё, Щ* and so on. - and some letters donʼt represent any sounds: *Ь, Ъ*. The second, Latin alphabet has 31 letters: A a Ä ä B b D d E e F f G g Ğ ğ H h İ i I ı J j K k L l M m N n Ñ ñ O o Ö ö P p Q q R r S s Ş ş T t U u Ū ū Ü ü V v Y y Z z

Also the stuff you get from weed! Languages are a trip, one thing means one thing in one language and a WHOLE different thing in another. If someone came up to me and asked “keef?” I’d try to give them weed.

slimkat101

well good to know. and yeah a thing cab have different meaning in different language like niko or neka it's a name but it also means "fuck him" as "go fuck is ass" not "fuck him don't worry about it.

NotYourSnowBunny

Nigel is a name but also an insult for a loner in Australia. The world is a trip sometimes.

Blerty_the_Boss

They should also write Shlon, شلون for Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Those are way more common colloquially

MagnusRottcodd

I thought the Czech and the Slovak languages were more related than that?

Namugi07

They are, I as a person from Czechia can understand people from Slovakia just fine. But there are some words that are totally different. But a lot of people from the other country know those different words so we can also understand them.

pdonchev

Well those two words are pretty similar (note that the J is what in English is denoted with Y or I). I don't know for Czech and Slovak specifically, but in Slavic languages generally there are many dialectal varieties and very often the "dialect" word in one language is the official in another, and most people from both languages will know it. Especially when they are that close.

ranierski

Exactly. In standard Slovak we say ‘ako’ but in my dialect we say ‘jako’ which is very similar to Czech ‘jak’. In Balkan they say ‘kak/o’ which follows similar logic.

*Kuinka* is also "how" in Finnish, depending on the sentence. "How long" would be "Kuinka kauan" if it is about time. "Miten kauan" is ok too, but just a bit clumsy. If we were asking "how long" in distance, it would be "kuinka pitkä" but "miten pitkä" also works.
