Never understood that mistranslation argument anyway. It's been two years, now everyone is aware of the "real" translations. Never saw anyone changing his mind with that.
People still quote the mistranslation as a negative though.
A lot of people hate it because their fanfiction didn't come to fruition. Why would someone like the ending because their fanfiction didn't come true?
A lot of people hate parts of the ending such as the Ymir quote and think it was left unanswered, when it wasn't.
The mistranslation stuff I've seen were about Armin's words to Eren. While this didn't bother me (at least in comparison to evething else), I've seen many people disliking that. And whether the spelling was "error" or "terrible mistake" or anything else didn't change their stance on that.
I'm not saying they like it because their theories became wrong. I'm saying the opposite. Some people only cared about having Mikasa kiss Eren by the end of it. Happened? Incredible ending. Some others only cared about the rumbling getting stopped. Oh it was. Very cool ending then! There is issued with the end? It's fine, doesn't matter, I got what I want. Guess the ones disliking it must have wanted something else.
What does "answered" means here? Like, answered properly or left to interpretation, with many possibilities? Just look at this sub. It's pro-i-loved-the-ending here. Yet you'll find many people still looking for answers at basic things such as [this](https://old.reddit.com/r/ShingekiNoKyojin/comments/10n0ggz/why_did_grisha_still_give_eren_the_attack_and/). I guess those people did misunderstand the story, yet they still like the ending. Or some things were really unexplained, and you cant blame the readers for that.
I mean no. He's not even one of the best mangaka let alone story tellers period. That's an extremely high bar. One of the best storytellers alive should've stuck that ending better than he did and I'm not one of the people that hated the ending.

I'm ready to be given recommendations that are similar, but I'm not expecting anything as I've watched a lot of anime's already.

Eren's great grandnephew falls in love with a demigod and has to trick an archangel, fight two werewolves, a necromancer, two elven warlords, and dodge a lawsuit from the Tolkien estate to get with her.
[I'd read it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beren_and_L%C3%BAthien)
I'm honestly a bit tired of all this "I don’t assure you that I will succeed", "I am not sure if I can do it", "Maybe I am not so good", etc.
We know that Japanese people are very humble and that these are typical responses they give to interviews and all. But Isayama keeps saying this stuff too often and I can't help but feel that he lost confidence in himself in these last 2 years. It's like he listens too much to fans' opinions. And in particular it feels like the opinions of the vocal minority of fans who hated the ending and the even smaller minority of people who harassed him are having a stupidly big impact on him...
I just hope he didn't stop believing in himself and in his abilities
This narrative is so funny, a lot of artists are literally like that especially if they caught lighting in a bottle in their very first try. Yams literally became the 5th most successful mangaka in his first story, that's not really normal at all. Doubting one's self to create something that successful again is him being a normal fucking human.
I didn't say it is not normal... I said Isayama has been saying it a lot, and I mean A LOT, recently. And the way he says it makes me think it is related to the noisy and often stupid criticism some people have been annoyingly making for two years straight, rather than to some kind of impostor syndrome.
It’s because he’s humble and self aware, nothing else. Everyone else you might follow might be arrogant jerks, but it’s pretty nice to have someone who knows what’s going on and isn’t a crazy narcissist
I don’t see why being honest and aware means you need to be up yourself. He’s behaviour is fine, I’m more worried about you analysing ghosts that aren’t there. You don’t need a balance, because there is not one positive thing about any arrogance at all
You're only saying that based on speculations with no actual proof, if he actually lost his confidence in his skill he wouldn't even visit fans from the other side of the world. Him doing this is acknowledging that his work is good enough to garner audiences even if it's not Japan. His work spawned live action movies/spin-offs in both anime and manga made him the 5th richest mangaka, world level fame, praises from mangakas/critics/public alike and has a literal theme park. That kind of success makes in his first try seems like a stroke of luck, add to the fact that he was always humble since the start and you're going to get this kind of comments from him.
J r.r martin doesn't seem like he wants to continue writing his magnum Opus, does that mean he lost his confidence too? Smh
Reddit really likes to make narrative that has no bases whatsoever if it's something that they dislike, it's worse than Twitter, but I digress.
I literally used expressions like "it feels like" or "makes me think".
What else should I say? Those are my impressions based on his recent interviews and other things.
He had to EXPLICITLY SAY THAT HE WAS SORRY FOR THE FACT THAT THE ENDING WAS DIVISIVE for the NY panel. Does it sound normal to you?
>He had to EXPLICITLY SAY THAT HE WAS SORRY FOR THE FACT THAT THE ENDING WAS DIVISIVE for the NY panel. Does it sound normal to you?
Never for a fact did he say he was regretful about his ending, heck he stands by it. One of the critique he took personally was at the start of the series, not the end so why are you pushing for the narrative that the ending is what made him say these things (even though he always was very critical about his work)
He only said that Armin line was understood differently from what he intended and he could have written it better, but aside from that he never says he regretted writing such a devisive ending and was actually promoting that it would make the fans hate him during the release of it.
You can only say he became self critical after he ends his story if he wasn't that way already in the first place.
No wait... I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I perfectly know that he doesn't regret about his ending and in the interview of June 2021 he meant just the Armin line.
But here's the [message he wrote in the recent panel in NY ](https://i.imgur.com/PaPpIBG.jpg)
My bad for reporting that he said he was sorry. But this is not normal anyway. He felt the need to ask to be respectful. And he said he was anxious... come on! All of this because Kodansha perfectly knows that Americans were the most polarized (the message for France wasn't anything like this).
>He felt the need to ask to be respectful.
You're making it seem big than what it really is, he's just saying "be kind to me" lol, why is that a big deal now? Lmao
or...OR...maybe he knows the masses are superficial and *some* of the criticisms are valid and honest, instead of the vapid applauds and compliments he'll receive whenever he goes.
Shocking i know.
This isn’t exactly it. He’s a beginning writer and artist—SnK was his first ‘successful’ story, not to mention his first actual story, and it was a hit wonder that few could have expected to blow up quite as it did. Anyone in his shoes would be wondering if it was a fluke or if he still had the magic to make another great success happen. His career has not been that of a traditional mangaka at all, having essentially skyrocketed to the top from the get-go (whereas most of his competitors or contemporaries spend decades toiling away in studios just to get approval for their first independent small project) and as a result he probably feels he still has a lot to learn that other successful mangaka at his level of publishing have learned much earlier in their career. That level of awareness and humility is definitely going to help him—read it as probably an eagerness to improve.
I understand your point of view and I agree with most of what you said, but he said this also about AoT and anyway I don't remember older interviews where he said stuff like that. At least not so many times! Maybe I'm just missing them, but to me it feels like something he has been doing recently.
What I'm saying is that an author should be able to evaluate when it actually makes sense to listen to fans' criticism and more specifically what criticism to embrace.
He definitely has a lot to learn because, as you said, AoT has been his first and only work. But I'm pretty sure everyone around the world agrees that despite being a beginner he did really well.
I mean, in the context of this particular announcement is not a bad clarification.
You wrote an extremely popular and mind-blowing story.
Now, you're announcing a different story.
What are the expectations? People are probably expecting the next Holy Grail of the industry.
He's probably saying that this probably not going to be another Attack on Titan, honestly.
Even if it's good, people are probably going to say something along the lines: "It's good. It's just not Attack on Titan".
Isayama has always been like this though. I'm too tired to look it up but there's an old interview around s2 content where someone commented about Miche not having more interactions before dying and Isayama put down his writing ability.
The dude is just very self critical in general. A lot of creatives are like that.
He's creates one of the greatest and most iconic series of all the time and he's still mad he just couldn't deliver in the last chapter, man, so unfair.
Hopefully he'll improve that self-esteem. We could get something even greater than AoT if isayama believed in himself, let's just not forget that he wrote AoT with 19 years, imagine what he could produce now with more experience and knowledge... Frightening

What makes you laugh? "Vocal" or "minority"?
Either case, it doesn't change the fact that people who hated the ending are just a small percentage of readers, even if they believe they're a lot
accidently put the quotations on vocal, i was talking about minority. also i don't know what fairytale land you live in to actually believe that, but objectively a very big portion of the audience hated the ending.
Over 16k people were polled on the ending by r/ShingekiNoKyojin and r/AttackOnTitan
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdxRM4kV3vdlNuxSLp8fCzRMWBzVICmwoOoVd5Veu6gj8HtQg/viewanalytics
>50.9% of readers either disliked the ending or hated it. (25.4% disliked, 25.5% hated)
>45.6% of readers ending up having a more negative view of the entire series.
50%, or even 25% is not a "minority" dude. not even trying to be an asshole or whatever, but the things you're saying just are untrue.
It's a sample size dominated by people who are invested in the story.
Obviously the opinions of that kind of reader matter a bit more than your casual fans, but it's also obvious that the hardcore fans would have stronger opinions about something that happens, whether it's good or bad.
Why would you think these are the people invested in the story? Being on reddit doesn’t make you more hardcore than anyone else in anything. It just means you’re on reddit
Why would I assume that people on a site not affiliated with the manga, on a forum named in a different language than what the majority of users/readers know, and that have shown in the past to be highly invested in the story, would be invested in the story? No idea
Also no idea: why you are arguing with me, who is defending what you said.
I’m more concerned that it’s all people on reddit, mostly from the West and no way to know if people had actually read the correct translation. It’s still an anonymous online poll where people with vested interests are more likely to vote. I didn’t even know the poll exists and AoT is my favourite show, has been since S3
it was from the megathread of the final chapter. also all we can do is use what we get lol, the stats obviously aren't totally accurate but they're a good general ballpark (and for only the western audience i will give you that)
Ah yes, using just Reddit as a source for statistics... Also, a poll done probably just after the release of the last chapter, without people having actually metabolized what they have read. Enough said!
Listen to opinions of people outside your bubble, in every online space, possibly non American-centric. You'll realize that the hate is mainly concentrated in Reddit (in specific subreddits) and Twitter and that in Europe and Asia the vast majority of people liked the ending or at most had mixed feelings about it. In my 2 years experience, both online and irl, I'd say a good 80%/85%.
>Ah yes, using just Reddit as a source for statistics...
as compared to you:
"i've been on twitter for 2 years, trust me bro!".
also i had a feeling you would bring up the asian audience. i genuinly believe this is like a circlejerk among ppl who defend the ending that automatically bring up that japanese people liked the ending. firstly like where do you even get that information from lmao, and even if it is true, so what? a majority of the western audience dislikes the ending and the genuine objective evidence backing my claims are a lot more substantiated than you, a single person, saying "i've talked to people on twitter and real life".
Actually, I know little about the Asian audience, but I know for sure that they liked it. But I'm sorry to inform you that here in Europe people liked it it as well.
"The majority of the English audience dislikes the ending". What does "English" mean? English-speaking people? People from England? Or from North America?
And don't get me wrong, I already know the answer to my questions! I have already seen a lot of similar situations for other pieces of narrative, always from the same people. ;)
I wish him the best of luck in his endeavors. I don’t think that a lot of the ,shipping or whatever the fuck you want to call it has been to good for the show but I wouldn’t really mind it if the story felt a lot more fleshed out and natural. Hopefully this ending strikes with a wider audience.
He didn’t do it for the money originally, why would he stop doing it? The money has nothing to do with why. People like being creative, it’s weirder not to pursue creative activities
An average AoT chapter was about 40 pages, and he’s estimating this story will only be 8-16 pages (and I have the impression it’ll only be a one-shot). He should be good.
???? I liked the ending why are you assuming things LOL I've always praised Isayama
Also, I will apologize for coming off harsh. Just feel like despite the rabid side of the fanbase I think he has a lot of passion for writing and it won't stop him.
How did he wrote one of the most succesfull animes of the past decade out of hundreds of others, got world wide fame, 3 movie adaptations.
And still have so little confidence?
People will jump on it and compare it with AoT even if it has nothing to do with fantasy and mystery
ye
They’ll say “this panel should have had youseebiggirl playing in the background 🙄
He did say ages ago he wanted to make a dark comedy or something
He should go for it. Between Yu Yu Hakusho and HxH Togashi made this scifi comedy (?) and it was wicked.
Level E
He already did
(His Eren-Rriner agenda never ends)
What is the agenda?
Bro you're supposed to retire and run a hot spring or whatever. Slice of life manga incoming?
I LOWKEY wish he was more confident in his abilities. It’s hard to not be self critical though. He knows how to write a story. Just cuz the extreme fans hate on his ending for attack on titan, he shouldn’t let the hate get to him.
The problem isn't with hating the ending, but hating it for the wrong reasons. But what can I say? Welcome to the internet
I mean you can dislike anything for any reason, as long as you aren’t sending hate to the author imo
What're the wrong reasons?
Fan fictions not coming true, fan mistranslations, not understanding parts of it.
Could say the exact opposite for people loving the ending lol.
You can blame fans mistranslating the manga as a reason people like it? Explain please.
Meant for the two others. Fan fictions becoming true and misunderstanding parts of the story. Never understood that mistranslation argument anyway. It's been two years, now everyone is aware of the "real" translations. Never saw anyone changing his mind with that.

if there are wrong reasons, you're implying there are right reasons aswell.
I mean he literally just said the problem isn't hating the ending so he didn't really say that the ending is perfect
It's more than just knowing how to write a story, he's legitimately a master of his craft and one of the best storytellers alive.
I mean no. He's not even one of the best mangaka let alone story tellers period. That's an extremely high bar. One of the best storytellers alive should've stuck that ending better than he did and I'm not one of the people that hated the ending.

This reminds of when *LOST* introduced the other residents of the island (after slowly building up to the Hatch).
Highly disagree with you, highly agree with the person you are replying to. AoT is a masterpiece for sure. Like, easily. Duh.
the both of you are trying to put fact on opinion which is silly as shit

He got the smiling Titan haircut lmfao
Yee yee ass haircut
Take tour time bruh Pd.: is he isayama??? New haircut?
Beren: Next Generations
Eren's great grandnephew falls in love with a demigod and has to trick an archangel, fight two werewolves, a necromancer, two elven warlords, and dodge a lawsuit from the Tolkien estate to get with her. [I'd read it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beren_and_L%C3%BAthien)
"Dodge a lawsuit from the Tolkien estate" lmao 💀
He's so hard on himself, yet created one of the best stories ever lol
Is it so hard to keep a good balance between the two things? Why do you people talk like there is only black and white?
Smh Reddit really likes to make narrative that has no bases whatsoever if it's something that they dislike, it's worse than Twitter, but I digress.
One of the critique he took personally was at the start of the series, not the end so why are you pushing for the narrative that the ending is what made him say these things (even though he always was very critical about his work) He only said that Armin line was understood differently from what he intended and he could have written it better, but aside from that he never says he regretted writing such a devisive ending and was actually promoting that it would make the fans hate him during the release of it. You can only say he became self critical after he ends his story if he wasn't that way already in the first place.
No wait... I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I perfectly know that he doesn't regret about his ending and in the interview of June 2021 he meant just the Armin line. But here's the [message he wrote in the recent panel in NY ](https://i.imgur.com/PaPpIBG.jpg) My bad for reporting that he said he was sorry.
I didn't say that there aren't valid criticisms. Hard to find among the sea of bullshit this fandom says everyday, but there are some for sure
I think that's why Armin is like that too.
Frightening
He just literally ran out of space, to the point where the real ending didn't get published until after the series had ended.

Yeah, thx
Your spoiler tag isn't working, you need to remove the spacings between the spoiler marks and the first/last words inside the tag.
It does work for me... (mobile)
It doesn't for me in desktop view unfortunately.

minority?
Yes dude, minority
No! I'm not a minority!
or maybe you're just overreacting to a simple response...
Maybe...
>"minority" of fans who hated the ending lol
What makes you laugh? "Vocal" or "minority"? Either case, it doesn't change the fact that people who hated the ending are just a small percentage of readers, even if they believe they're a lot
accidently put the quotations on vocal, i was talking about minority. also i don't know what fairytale land you live in to actually believe that, but objectively a very big portion of the audience hated the ending. Over 16k people were polled on the ending by r/ShingekiNoKyojin and r/AttackOnTitan https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdxRM4kV3vdlNuxSLp8fCzRMWBzVICmwoOoVd5Veu6gj8HtQg/viewanalytics >50.9% of readers either disliked the ending or hated it. (25.4% disliked, 25.5% hated) >45.6% of readers ending up having a more negative view of the entire series. 50%, or even 25% is not a "minority" dude. not even trying to be an asshole or whatever, but the things you're saying just are untrue.
Two reddit polls does not the audience make
true, but it's a pretty big sample size. it's also a lot better than pulling shit out of your ass
No idea Also no idea: why you are arguing with me, who is defending what you said.
I’m more concerned that it’s all people on reddit, mostly from the West and no way to know if people had actually read the correct translation. It’s still an anonymous online poll where people with vested interests are more likely to vote. I didn’t even know the poll exists and AoT is my favourite show, has been since S3
it was from the megathread of the final chapter. also all we can do is use what we get lol, the stats obviously aren't totally accurate but they're a good general ballpark (and for only the western audience i will give you that)
25% is a minority. You know, by definition.
>Ah yes, using just Reddit as a source for statistics... as compared to you: "i've been on twitter for 2 years, trust me bro!". also i had a feeling you would bring up the asian audience. i genuinly believe this is like a circlejerk among ppl who defend the ending that automatically bring up that japanese people liked the ending. firstly like where do you even get that information from lmao, and even if it is true, so what? a majority of the western audience dislikes the ending and the genuine objective evidence backing my claims are a lot more substantiated than you, a single person, saying "i've talked to people on twitter and real life".
I have already seen a lot of similar situations for other pieces of narrative, always from the same people. ;)
His source : a non-inclusive poll. Yours : "My experience". I guess the upvotes speaks for themselves about the bias in this /r lol.
You seem very confident in that claim. Do you have any source to back this up?
That's hype, hope he has fun with it.
I wonder if we’ll finally see Marcel’s death
Dark comedy let’s go
Great news. Hope everything goes well.
Let’s gooo! This is so hype!
French SnK 😬
Why he kinda look like a hobo tho but the badass kind of hobo that will fight molesters on the street
I hope we get Bren
Ok Just don't do the same mistake as making story that the fans wanted
I wish him the best of luck in his endeavors. I don’t think that a lot of the ,shipping or whatever the fuck you want to call it has been to good for the show but I wouldn’t really mind it if the story felt a lot more fleshed out and natural. Hopefully this ending strikes with a wider audience.
[удалено]
hes just talking about possibly writing a 8-16 page chapter (it might not even be aot, but idk) also he squashed the aoe theories anyways
Nothing to do with aot
Neither.
Yeah, judging by whatever the fuck that ending was, I won’t hold my breath for this one.
Why do people do this, you're already very rich:don't work anymore.
He didn’t do it for the money originally, why would he stop doing it? The money has nothing to do with why. People like being creative, it’s weirder not to pursue creative activities
Writing snk was destructive to his health; that is why. I care for the guy.
An average AoT chapter was about 40 pages, and he’s estimating this story will only be 8-16 pages (and I have the impression it’ll only be a one-shot). He should be good.
maybe because it's his passion? jesus not everything is about money
He spent the last decade writing, he probably likes doing it.
This is so fucking stupid HAHAHAH. Like maybe just maybe he writes because he enjoys it???
It's not stupid because he was slammed really hard by idiots like you, simply because the Fandom didn't like the ending. Why do it then?
???? I liked the ending why are you assuming things LOL I've always praised Isayama Also, I will apologize for coming off harsh. Just feel like despite the rabid side of the fanbase I think he has a lot of passion for writing and it won't stop him.
Most people liked the ending.
Inflation. With all the money in the world, it isn't gonna last forever.
It's gunna be titled, "Birdemic 3:Wings of Freedom.
Let's goooo
What happened to starting his onsen :(
I hope it’s something complete unrelated to attack on Titan. I’m Curious to see what else he wants to create
jesus just remembering how Aot Looked on the manga the first chapters and reading he's doing a new story made me feel really nostalgic
Don’t let r/titanfolk hear about this
How did he wrote one of the most succesfull animes of the past decade out of hundreds of others, got world wide fame, 3 movie adaptations. And still have so little confidence?
