I use the Xbox headset. It has two channels, I connect to my phones discord and to the Xbox. From there my push to talk setting is on and works simultaneously with discord and game chat. I spent a longtime looking for a headset capable of this and this one is the only one that can as far as I know. Other dual channel headsets don’t work with the push to talk while in discord.
Edit: wireless Xbox headset that is
It’s the new Xbox wireless one.

This is honestly more of an Xbox restriction issue than it is one that can be handled by the game/devs since you can only be active in one or the other. There \*is\* an option to toggle between party and game, but that does require you to pull the Xbox menu system rather than some sort of toggle within said game itself.
I'm not talking about party chat, I'm saying to improve game chat so nobody uses parties anymore. And yes, you can toggle between party and game chat on Xbox, but you still can't hear people so how would you know when to toggle.
But yeah, I'm suggesting a toggle where both are for in-game chat so parties are useless.
As someone who very frequently games on xbox, it doesn't matter how good the game chat is, me and my friends are always gonna use xbox partys or discord because its just better and more convenient than any game chat there is.
To each their own, but if we had a system where we could talk to our crew only, I don't see the need for a party. You're just missing out on interactions at that point.
What is it that makes parties more convenient? Just curious. Because for me, its 100% more convenient than game chat on literally any other game. But SoT is so different because communication can change the game entirely.
Well reason 1 is that it can be pretty buggy. Every time I enter game chat, I can hear other crews but not my own crew. Even if were all in game chat.
Reason 2 is more of a personal one but the community can be pretty toxic, and some of my friends tend to have anger issues so its better if they dont hear the enemy crew shit talking the whole time. Also, we just have the habit of using party chat since its what we use for every game we play.
The toxicity is what led me to just mute all other crews audio and text chat, and stay in party chat. I'll have one positive interaction for every 10 times someone is calling my wife or 10 year old son racist and horrible things.
Good job society!
On the Xbox there's an accessibility option so it types up anything it hears. It's for deaf players, but if you turn it on it'll do it for game chat but not party chat. So while I'm usually in a party, if someone rolls up and says something it may not be properly translated to text, but I at least know to switch over to game chat for a second.
Hell Let Loose on the Xbox has a comms radial menu that let's you toggle between game chat and Xbox party chat. That said, it's extremely finicky and I've had to restart my entire game multiple times to get it to work.
A person or crew in open chat that leave the mic on, for anyone to hear their plans, problems, or banter.
Sometimes I'm solo but have my headset on to hear better or talk with randoms, and if I forget the mic is on while I talk to my family, I am hot micing
It's when someone just leaves their mic channel open so every sound they make gets picked up. In A/V set ups a mic is considered "hot" if it's on and can pick up sound.
100% agree with you and this is something I've complained about many times in the past. It's bullshit that Microsoft talks about playing where you want to play and encourages crossplay (often even *forces* it), but then doesn't have parity of features between platforms. PC players can be in a Xbox party and still hear and talk in game chat. So obviously it's something that can be done, but either Microsoft or Rare (not sure who is to blame) isn't implementing it for the console. Console players should be able to do the same, be in a party, but still hear and use game chat (could use push to talk).
And you're right, it definitely takes away from what could be a cool and fun part of the Sea of Thieves social experience. It's a real shame, but I don't expect it to change unfortunately.
EDIT: One tip for you. Turn on your "speech to text" option in the settings. This will at least allow you to know when someone else is talking to you in game chat even if you're in a party. You won't be able to respond without manually switching to game chat yourself, but at least you'll know when someone is using game chat. If you play on Xbox servers though, this will hardly matter as most crews aren't using game chat for the reasons you discussed.
Some games allow you to hear in-game chat while in an Xbox party (I think Hell Let Loose is one that does this?). I wish Rare would implement similar functionality and combine it with the existing ‘push to talk’ option.
Xbox has discord now doesn’t it? Is it possible to to use that to achieve what you mean?
I agree that it would be nice to have an in game option. On this, can you always hear your own crew mates in game and other crews it works in proximity? Basically never play with a crew so not sure.
Yeah, Xbox has discord, but it is essentially a party still. It overrides game chat so you can't hear or speak in game still.
And yeah, how you described it is exactly how it works.
Official wireless headset or one that allows you to be connected to your xbox and phone and the discord app on your phone allows you to hear both at same time. The pain in the ass is your crew either have to be PC or have the same setup to hear both.
Interesting. I have a pc also, and have been wondering if theres a way to rig up basically what you've been saying.
Are you saying I need specific headphones to do this?
The Xbox app on PC allows the same feature to all headphones.
Or if you want a more complex setup to adjust vol for discord/game chat & mic volume as well as listen to music lol check out [Voicemeeter](https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/)
Thanks for letting me know! Wasn’t sure on either of those points. That’s somewhat realistic I suppose. Not great for making plans though haha.
Only other option I can think of is some headsets have dual connectivity. So you can run discord on a mobile device and use push to talk in game.
Obviously a solution that requires all your crew to have multiple devices and specific headphones isn’t great though.
Sure, but other crews can still hear you, right? Like if there's a boarder in the water, I want to be able to tell my crew I'm watching left ladder without the boarder hearing.
I’m pretty sure the proximity range for enemy’s to hear you is pretty reasonable, like they will hear you if they are just about to catch the ladder and you say it but if they are like just landing from their cannon shot they most likely won’t hear you
What about when you're pulling a sneak play or about to board an enemy and you need to communicate to your crew what your plans are? Game chat is not a good option in this game for people when PvP is concerned.
I agree, it’s killed proximity chat in Warzone as well. I wouldn’t think it would be that hard to make down on the d pad as a click a toggle to unmute and holding down on the d pad a toggle to switch between crew and proximity chat
It's wonky, but Hell Let Loose has a radial menu that lets you select between proximity chat, squad chat, and party chat. So I'm pretty sure it can actually be done.
I'd consider ditching party chat if they provided a toggle for crew only chat and proximity chat.
You mean when you put the big end to your mouth? That greatly lowers the proximity others can hear you. I also believe it's the only way for your crew to not hear you.
I use Xbox party chat then have in game chat set to push to talk. If I talk the party hears me if I push to talk in game chat hears me and party hears me.
In discord I map the push to mute button the same as push to talk in sot so if I push to talk it mutes discord. Less annoying for my party members
In conclusion the only thing missing is a push to mute function in Xbox app. Thank you.

Cool! I assume it would work with the mobile Xbox app instead of discord? I'll have to check that out.
I don’t see why not!

Invite party to game. One button to invite everyone is clutch
Some people use parties to socialize with friends that aren't playing the same game too.
Game chat won't replace streaming in discord so your friends can watch your tuck play while they quest.
Isn't making an option to talk to your "crew only" what an Xbox party is?
Yes, but then you can't talk to or hear others.. what the whole post is about..

What exactly is hotmicing I’m sorta new
A person or crew in open chat that leave the mic on, for anyone to hear their plans, problems, or banter. Sometimes I'm solo but have my headset on to hear better or talk with randoms, and if I forget the mic is on while I talk to my family, I am hot micing
Hot mic'ing is when your mic is always active. So you can say something meant for your crew, but the person boarding you can hear it as well.
It's when someone just leaves their mic channel open so every sound they make gets picked up. In A/V set ups a mic is considered "hot" if it's on and can pick up sound.

The only one I know and use is the Official Microsoft Wireless ones. They're $99.
Luckily my headphones are basically falling apart and I'm in the market for new ones. I'll have to check that out. Thanks :)

Sure, but other crews can still hear you, right? Like if there's a boarder in the water, I want to be able to tell my crew I'm watching left ladder without the boarder hearing.

I'm pretty sure the alt use for the megaphone is crew only.

Do you use Xbox party chat on Xbox? Because it completely cuts out game chat so you can't hear or speak in game. Discord too.
I’m on pc
On PC, my son uses an Xbox controller and there is an in-game setting for Push To Talk that I set to R3. Is that not a thing on console?
