cothomasmiller

Those two items are right wing talking points and are immune to truth. sorry

IttHertzWhenIP

David Card is the partial recipient she's referring too if you need to google this because stubborn boomer family members refuse to believe it

Mudkip9001

What does it mean like depress wages, like wage growth or what?

DarbyBartholomew

Just supply/demand - the idea that incoming immigrants increase the labor pool available for the same number of jobs - this theoretically allows employers to lower wages, but that's what was apparently disproven in this research

Mudkip9001

I don’t think people were saying it lowers wages so much as stops wage growth?

DarbyBartholomew

Eh, wage growth has been stagnant for longer than people have been screaming "they terk our jerrbbbs!" - at least at their present volume and vociferousness.

GaiusGraco

The research shows that immigrants work somewhat like a parallel pool of labor supply. The paper exposes that in this particular situation, local born people were unaffected, but previously arriving immigrants suffer the most from it.

kurisu7885

Unfortunately the USA is a place where none of these myths will die.

It's probably worth adding that there is no "Nobel prize in economics": it's just a bank that decided to give a prize at the same time as the other prizes are awarded. There is no indication that Nobel considered economy as a science. And this prize seem to usually reward Chicago/TINA economists which the scientific community do not really seem to like, if I remember the article correctly. https://mondediplo.com/2005/02/12nobel

CaesarInAFreezer

" The 'Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences', officially the 'Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel', is an economics award administered by the Nobel Foundation. Although not technically a Nobel Prize, which were established by Alfred Nobel's will in 1895, the Prize in Economic Sciences is identified with the award; its winners are announced with the Nobel Prize recipients, and it is presented at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony. " Provided for further context

lamalediction

Indeed, that's exactly the problem, they downplay the distinction to be able to claim the scientific clout/reputation of the prize for their dogmatic view of the world.

CaesarInAFreezer

I think the Prize still holds a great amount of value though

lamalediction

Well I'm not saying it has no value, I'm saying it's biased (since it seems most recipient belong to the Chicago school) and uses the name Nobel in a dodgy/almost scammy way (otherwise can I just decide I'll start handing out Astrology Nobel prizes?). But indeed, it has value as I'm sure they don't randomly attribute it to just anyone and must have a vetting/grading process.

Listening to working class conservatives repeat these talking points is tiresome. Unwilling to even acknowledge the fact that they are cannibalizing their own livelihood to perpetuate myths fed to them by the billionaires they can’t help but obsess over.

Immigrant workers do depress the wages, I'm talking from an Italian point of view. The fact is, practically all illegal immigrants are unskilled laborers that end up in the hands of organised crime or capitalists with no interest in their wellbeing. They are paid a shitty wage, in horrible conditions, together with poor Italians. This happens especially in mines or agricultural camps during Spring-Summer. This makes so that landowners for example, prefer making illegal immigrants work because they have no legal right, than have to make Italian citizens work for a liveable income

A reminder that his studies are only pertaining to a few states, unable to isolate all variables.

khcampbell1

Exactly. If it's so fn perfect, let it stand on its own merits.

GrandmaesterFlash45

I wonder what kind of selective data was used for this.
