T O P

Which hairstyle do you prefer?

Left will be far easier to Animate

Tanytor

Left will be far easier to Animate

ragingRobot

Also the negative space provides more definitive contrast with the background whereas the other one is kind of like a blob. This one is more interesting.

Erkengard

And looks more practical if she is a fighter.

Akecza

Not gonna lie, I'm leaning towards this one for this exact reason haha

theangriestbird

If you have anything like cutscenes or "down time" in the narrative, it would be cool to still see the hair down in those segments! That's the kind of little detail that elevates an indie project.

Akecza

It's gonna be a deckbuilder roguelike, so I don't expect any long cutscenes. But there will be camping and resting, so she could have her hair down there. A campfire, blanket and a marshmallow on a stick.

theangriestbird

that would make sense to me! it would definitely lend a more relaxed feel to those segments.

Akecza

[hehe](https://imgur.com/a/xOsms3P)

StrugglingGamer82

I love that image!! Really cute great pixel art

2TrucksHoldingHands

I love that

--Miranda--

Cute 💗

Guanvro

Ohhhh, if I may know, do you have a page where you upload things about the game you are designing? This pixel art got me so interested.

Akecza

It's really early in development, so for now I have only posted 3 artworks on this subreddit. But I guess I could create a dedicated subredit for gamedev posts, I've seen other people do it. I'll do it in the evening, I'll let you know.

[deleted]

This is da whey

zombiep00

At yeast OP is a wonderful artist either way!

SenSenSenSenSenSen

I agree with this entire thread

nightowlweedcafe

If I would be handling a sword, I would put my hair up. Hair would get into eyesight, while swinging the sword. More practical imo

TenPoundsOfBacon

I’d argue ponytail can be more expressive since it has A more defined shape. Also agree with other comments supporting it

TropicalSkiFly

This is true

ACheca7

Left seems more practical, gives an organised feeling to the character. Right seems more pretty and adventurous.

DreadedInc

I was thinking the same but more of left for teen right for adult.

[deleted]

Short hair would be even more practical.

jnpg

If you are crazy/ambitious, you could do both and have her lose her hair band at some point

[deleted]

Low on health, hairband gets lost. Health goes back up, say at a point where it's safe and healing is possible, animate the hair being retied.

MuuhRenai

If you have the time and budget, animate her tieing her hair

dylpick44

I was thinking it would be cool if going into a boss battle or something, she tied her hair up That may not be very feasible tho

FronQuan

Go into boss room, camera pans to boss, boss name shows on screen, camera pans back into position. Meanwhile character is frozen in place since it’s a “Cinematic” and as the camera pans back, you see the animation of her tying up her hair

BLJS2warchief

Is this too much to ask for.

justapupu

I like this!

sighelysian

this would be so cool if you’re able !!!

shaxamo

I was just gonna say "how much time have you got?" I do like the idea of a specific health point or back damage removing it and then a little animation to tie it up. Or depending on game type, when combat starts there could be a second long animation where they tie it up.

KagomeChan

Yes, exactly what I was thinking

ragingRobot

If you made the heads separate animations from the body it would be less to draw over and over again lol

FireVisor

Yup! I really like that idea. Never seen something like that in a game that I can remember.

Lookfor42

Left 100% looks like shes more ready for a fight/adventure where the right gives off more of a casual feeling

Fanky_Spamble

Ponytail

Akecza

Thanks. What makes you say that?

Fanky_Spamble

I think it's cute but also it's more practical in a battle situation. It just goes with the outfit better.

Sundiata1

Have you ever gone to war with your hair down? Sheesh, stuff gets everywhere.

[deleted]

fuck /u/spez -- mass edited with redact.dev

XxPINEAPPLExX04

If this is for a video game, maybe have it down when walking around, but before combat have an animation to tie it up, kinda like Ash Ketchum flipping his cap backwards. Just an idea. Though if you had to pick one for the whole time, probably tied back.

corvish_

this sounds awesome

IndependentDouble138

Left all the way. Easier to animate as well IMO.

Tricky_3

I like both of it but for combat I'll prefer the left one

[deleted]

[удалено]

Akecza

Aw, thank you!

Riodawg42

Ponytail

pyabo

A warrior is always going to pull their hair back and keep it out of their way.

FeebysPaperBoat

From the standpoint of a female who’s hair is always in the way and would totally distract me from survival, left. Right is gorgeous too though. Well done.

ComfortableCream3

One on the right. I think it's prettier. I'd wear my hear like that

[deleted]

In battle?

TheCardiganKing

For a real battle her hair would be in a bun or she'd have short hair. Even a ponytail would be asking to be yanked. Right one looks much more dynamic, OP. That right rendering is so much better than the left. It would be tougher to animate, but much, much more impressive if you did.

ComfortableCream3

Practically, no :P After battle, I'd def. loosen my hair to be like that. (Which is also wishful thinking. My hair gets all in my face at the SLIGHTEST breeze. Still though - This is pixel art. Right one for me is still pretty :)

Grotski

long hair down screams 80s action hero on an adventure. that's why i like it. xD

Djinn_Indigo

This looks like a before and after of the moment she learns to let go of her fears or something.

SaintBrutus

Left: How the adventure started. Right: How the adventure is going. My first thought was ‘why not both?’

EpicKori

I think the one on the right. It gives me adventure vibes

flyinggazelletg

I like the ponytail more :)

Scared-Ferret1

Ponytail casual feel/seems prepared to do the adventure

Milk_Mindless

Pony

Icepheonix174

I really like both! What resolution is this?

Akecza

This one is if I remember correctly 180x200. Full game screen is 640x360. Since this art is for battle screen, she can take this much space.

EmergencyLeading8137

I like the left because it lets you see the scarf more, and the silhouette is stronger.

HammerStyx8

Mostly just wanted to say I really like these. Fantastic art. My opinion is that the ponytail is better. A sword fighter would want their hair out of the way during conflict.

musicallykairi

I like the ponytail a lot better

Rogue_4178

Left

1waffle1

They're both dope, keep them if you can, let the player choose. Like other comment said, can use either during the plot.

[deleted]

Is there a way to use both!? Like, ponytail up when adventuring and when she fights and takes damage, her hair falls down and then she puts it back up? Or vice versa. She puts her hair up for battle?

SilentPlayer7

The right is better in my opinion. But the left is more practical

Kitchen_Bicycle6025

Hair down is prettier, but hair up is extremely practical. Can you imagine brushing hair out of your face during a fight?

jdeezy

That's what she does when she's on one heart. Move from hair down to hair uo

Pathadox1

the left is more practical but the right has nicer shading, i think i'd go with the ponytail but make the shading more gradual like it is in the other version

KagomeChan

Both for different scenes

OwenGow

2

honkudonk

Right is more rugged and wild.

[deleted]

Both look great, but the sword is a bit puny.

KatsumakiXVI

Left

-Moonmoth-

Left

Lord-of-Nothing1

If it’s for a game you can find a way to include both

HeroicAnimation

Left for a lot of reasons

cryptolipto

Left

powy_notfound

left is better

Mettlesome_Inari

Left one

snarfflarf

tied up, out of the face while fighting. hair down should be for down time

IBelrose

It depends on the feeling you've made for your game, art, etc. The left makes her feel like she's prepared to be in combat as she's chosen the more utilitarian style. This makes her feel more seasoned and mature. The right however gives a sense of adventure and wonder like she's stumbled into the situation where she has to now combat dangers. Both look really good, so I think it comes down to the feeling that you're trying to convey.

Someguywithreddit577

She needs a giant sword NOW

Dash_the_Fury

if it was a game i'd recommend to make it optional

YouDontExistt

Definitely right side.

hphantom06

Right is far better. For one, it means you won't have an odd head shape when she moves, and two, hair down is always superior to hair up in all situations, except cooking and woodworking, obviously

wheres_mak

left makes more sense for a fight and is simpler to animate but right looks intensely better

Spiritual-Finish-595

2nd one Def

AdFar5829

Hair down, that's all.

oxXTabbycatXxo

Left will be easier to animate but right shows more movement.

CockyCigar

Both, could be used for gameplay mechanics. One guy mentioned health, I think it could be used for appearance throughout the story or something. Just spitballing

No_Engineering_3750

Might be in the minority but I really like the right!

AJarOfYams

Left for silhouette. Left seems younger and innocent, and right looks more mature and less cautious. In-game cinematics/cutscenes could change this, of course

Bleezze

I love the 2nd one personally, but both looks well drawn and fitting

[deleted]

I like the left for her casual look when she's out and about on her daily life. But the hair on the right looks like it would be cool to see in a scene where her hair tie gets cut during an epic battle and she has it flowing gracefully around the battlefield.

Beth_Esda

They're both great! I think, if you have the resources, it could be cool to have her hair down at the beginning before the start of the grand adventure. Then, as she's getting ready, the hair goes in the ponytail because *now* she means business.

Woahdang_Jr

I like the second one, although the first seems more practical on the dev end

HydroFrog64_2nd

I feel like the right actually fits her outfit better but as others said, left would be easier to animate

Dewesafavor

left if it’s spring or summer. right if it’s fall or winter

MoonSunSM

Left looks better idk why

jkooc137

I'd say the left, I'd tie my hair back to sword fight

faCt011

Right could be default one, but you could automatically switch to the left one when the character has to handle very dangerous situations like boss fights. Could add great detail to the game.

Artisim25

1st

jayswag99

Her hair up seems more relistic if she is fighting

AvocadoMysterious732

damn they both are lovely, I can't decide. but the left one looks like a start of the quest and right one is like an epic last boss fight where the character has lost her hair tie

HuppsyIsHot

the left one looks more childish whilst the right one looks a little more aged

Cerb-r-us

I see an opportunity for a visual symbol of character progression.

apamaz

2

19Game_King94

Depends on what you want the characters look to say. The pony tail says young new adventurer and the wavy hair says seasoned and veteran adventurer

No_Philosopher6952

2

ShinMajin

Right

BarklyWooves

Feels like one is start of journey, one is end of journey, and either could be either. Releasing the ponytail could represent getting over inhibitions as she gets stronger and more competent, while gaining the ponytail could represent thinking more tactically and being prepared for battle - not wanting her hair to get in the way of a fight.

KillukaZoldyck

I like both, personally i’d pick right

Flamix2206

Second one

[deleted]

I’d say the personality traits of the character need to be taken into account as well

GrimZombie100

The right one looks much better in my opinion. But the left one would be more idealistic and realistic. Easier for animating. And doing anything with long hair down is a pain in the ass.

Zwordsman

I will always vote ponytails. \\(as a note for future comparison stuff. Having one background darker naturally inclines the eyes away from it to an extent for most viewers)

SimplyRocketSurgery

Give it the silhouette test. Which style allows this character silhouette to stand out from the rest of your characters.

Rfg711

First one I like because as a long hair haver - I ain’t doing anything above a light stroll with my hair not tied up. Shit gets all in my face. You can be sure that if I’m sword fighting my hair is tied up. So if I saw 1, I would think “whoever made this did their homework”

Ansontrill

A is more practical and realistic B is more esthetically pleasing Take that what you will

maratae

Why not both? (V) (°,,,,°) (V)

AverageGyroEnjoyer

1st

Sphagne

Both choices?

New-Monarchy

The hairstyle on the right would work better for a more “battle-damaged” look alongside some torn clothing and bruising/cuts. But considering she looks otherwise perfectly fine I would go with the left.

Excellent-Space3036

Both.

haydro280

I like both

skalt711

Both

Olivedit

Left cuz' hair gets in the way otherwise.

mhynaemjef

The second one

HerrStadtGraf

#1 imho

MagicDog1234

Left looks Better, it also depends on what you are going for

Heuheuhi

Left, just left

Thisisanaccount2317

The one on the right is much more practical in the setting i can infer (fantasy action?). The second one would become tangled and nasty while the ponytail would be out of her eyes though more likely to be grabbed by a monster or enemy. A short style would be the most practical if your looking for realism. The stance with the sword could be a little more formal as well.

Anna-Beezy

Hmmmm both

Lilkittybangbang

Pony all duh whey✨

[deleted]

Left

a_cat_named_curious

My wife always points out when girls have their hair down in fight scenes and horror movies. From her perspective it’s self sabotaging. On her behalf, I vote hair up.

cloudyelephant

The one on the left

Grimmer026

Left

redditbestboy

Left for sure

tintaklgt

left

DS_Archer

Depends on the game

NationsUnderFire

I like the hair style on the left more.

mxmaker

Left one, its more realistic for battle.

lovinlemon

The ponytail on the left! It gives the character a much more unique and easily-recognizable profile by far. A lot of people with long hair will also tie it back so that it doesn’t get in the way, which makes sense with her having a sword and looking ready to fight!

BernieArt

1 for readability. You did great work on 2, but I think it would be too much in motion.

AuraGuardian1092

Hard to chose. Both are very nice.

MalevolentHeretic

Left. It's more practical anyway

SpatchcockMcGuffin

Left is dressed to fight

Al0gT0r

V1

ANiceDice

Left

scootty83

Hair up

Davi_adagem

Left, i think

ijustwannabehappy_22

I vibe with the ponytail more.

Majestic_Feedback_55

Left

toroga

100% ponytail

Golden_Emeraldi_33

Ponytail

JeffEpp

Left for workday stabbin', right for evening date night stabbin'.

Peaugucaixe

The first one

ZetzMemp

Left but both look good.

Desperate_Advisor976

Definitely ponytail

Fat_tata

#1

ehab_elbadry

the left one

SuperVGA

The ponytail seems more practical. A rougeish sort of person might prefer the mobility.

Merfik933

Left👍

WholemealBred

Left is cool. Right is the mum

cool_guy09

You could probably change it based off of the personality she is supposed to have someone who is hard working and independent will probably have their hair up and out of the way but if they're more laid back and don't do as much they would probably have their hair down more often

nselle20

Left

Jesuisleroidumonde

The ponytail looks better and will be easier to animate.

SlateLizrd

Right

R3tzz

I'll go with the right one

Shagyam

Both are good, but I think the right suits the character's appearance more.

[deleted]

I like the left because of the updo, but I like how fluffy the hair is on the right way more than the ponytail on the left. Something about it just feels off.

Zealousideal_Group69

Right because she looks more rugged and awesome like that like she’s not organized and I like her design

FloorSad

Right bc it's pretty

mrussia777n

right

astrea_maxima

I like the ponytail way more because of how it allows the attention to fall on other parts of the design more, BUT I would consider taking some of the curls from the hair down and adding them to the ponytail, I think it would be the perfect mix then!

Birdiegreenhaze

Hair down

Sad_Slice1835

right one

candy_eyeball

2 adds some awesome extra shapes and intrest to the silhouette

NyctoFiend

I like the look of the second one, but the first definitely feels more practical. - never swing a sword with your hair down

Select-Bluebird8208

Untied, it makes the character feel more free Edit: After reading the comments before me, I totally get the idea of why the tied up style has an advantage. Jnpg and Wolfnpdx77 both make a fantastic point; giving the best of both worlds.

KindaAnimeObsessed

i like left but you should incorporate right somehow!

andrew_crate

the right looks better however in this circumstance i think left

Kateluta

2nd

WoodpeckerHaunting57

I like the ponytail but would make the actual ponytail/holder tighter/smaller as real ponytails aren’t that thick

zoroddesign

If you don't care about more work, make them selectable styles.

Iamincrediblybored

It feels like it should start at one then transition to two

LanDest021

Left looks more young, right looks more serious. I prefer the right one.

tarapotamus

I literally cannot decide. Change the color scheme of one of them so it can be two people!

Francprole

Right

WeAreBroomstick

Right

FrostFireDireWolf

This is tough. Both look really good. I like right looks better

TheZenXilin

The right looks better imo
