Left will be far easier to Animate
Also the negative space provides more definitive contrast with the background whereas the other one is kind of like a blob. This one is more interesting.
And looks more practical if she is a fighter.
Not gonna lie, I'm leaning towards this one for this exact reason haha
If you have anything like cutscenes or "down time" in the narrative, it would be cool to still see the hair down in those segments! That's the kind of little detail that elevates an indie project.
It's gonna be a deckbuilder roguelike, so I don't expect any long cutscenes. But there will be camping and resting, so she could have her hair down there. A campfire, blanket and a marshmallow on a stick.
that would make sense to me! it would definitely lend a more relaxed feel to those segments.
I love that image!! Really cute great pixel art
I love that
Ohhhh, if I may know, do you have a page where you upload things about the game you are designing? This pixel art got me so interested.
It's really early in development, so for now I have only posted 3 artworks on this subreddit. But I guess I could create a dedicated subredit for gamedev posts, I've seen other people do it. I'll do it in the evening, I'll let you know.
This is da whey
At yeast OP is a wonderful artist either way!
I agree with this entire thread
If I would be handling a sword, I would put my hair up. Hair would get into eyesight, while swinging the sword. More practical imo
I’d argue ponytail can be more expressive since it has
A more defined shape. Also agree with other comments supporting it
This is true
Left seems more practical, gives an organised feeling to the character. Right seems more pretty and adventurous.
I was thinking the same but more of left for teen right for adult.
Short hair would be even more practical.
If you are crazy/ambitious, you could do both and have her lose her hair band at some point
Low on health, hairband gets lost. Health goes back up, say at a point where it's safe and healing is possible, animate the hair being retied.
If you have the time and budget, animate her tieing her hair
I was thinking it would be cool if going into a boss battle or something, she tied her hair up
That may not be very feasible tho
Go into boss room, camera pans to boss, boss name shows on screen, camera pans back into position. Meanwhile character is frozen in place since it’s a “Cinematic” and as the camera pans back, you see the animation of her tying up her hair
Is this too much to ask for.
I like this!
this would be so cool if you’re able !!!
I was just gonna say "how much time have you got?"
I do like the idea of a specific health point or back damage removing it and then a little animation to tie it up. Or depending on game type, when combat starts there could be a second long animation where they tie it up.
Yes, exactly what I was thinking
If you made the heads separate animations from the body it would be less to draw over and over again lol
Yup! I really like that idea. Never seen something like that in a game that I can remember.
Left 100% looks like shes more ready for a fight/adventure where the right gives off more of a casual feeling
Thanks. What makes you say that?
I think it's cute but also it's more practical in a battle situation. It just goes with the outfit better.
Have you ever gone to war with your hair down? Sheesh, stuff gets everywhere.
fuck /u/spez -- mass edited with redact.dev
If this is for a video game, maybe have it down when walking around, but before combat have an animation to tie it up, kinda like Ash Ketchum flipping his cap backwards. Just an idea.
Though if you had to pick one for the whole time, probably tied back.
this sounds awesome
Left all the way. Easier to animate as well IMO.
I like both of it but for combat I'll prefer the left one
Aw, thank you!
A warrior is always going to pull their hair back and keep it out of their way.
From the standpoint of a female who’s hair is always in the way and would totally distract me from survival, left. Right is gorgeous too though. Well done.
One on the right. I think it's prettier. I'd wear my hear like that
For a real battle her hair would be in a bun or she'd have short hair. Even a ponytail would be asking to be yanked.
Right one looks much more dynamic, OP. That right rendering is so much better than the left. It would be tougher to animate, but much, much more impressive if you did.
Practically, no :P After battle, I'd def. loosen my hair to be like that. (Which is also wishful thinking. My hair gets all in my face at the SLIGHTEST breeze. Still though - This is pixel art. Right one for me is still pretty :)
long hair down screams 80s action hero on an adventure. that's why i like it. xD
This looks like a before and after of the moment she learns to let go of her fears or something.
Left: How the adventure started.
Right: How the adventure is going.
My first thought was ‘why not both?’
I think the one on the right. It gives me adventure vibes
I like the ponytail more :)
casual feel/seems prepared to do the adventure
I really like both! What resolution is this?
This one is if I remember correctly 180x200. Full game screen is 640x360. Since this art is for battle screen, she can take this much space.
I like the left because it lets you see the scarf more, and the silhouette is stronger.
Mostly just wanted to say I really like these. Fantastic art. My opinion is that the ponytail is better. A sword fighter would want their hair out of the way during conflict.
I like the ponytail a lot better
They're both dope, keep them if you can, let the player choose. Like other comment said, can use either during the plot.
Is there a way to use both!? Like, ponytail up when adventuring and when she fights and takes damage, her hair falls down and then she puts it back up? Or vice versa. She puts her hair up for battle?
The right is better in my opinion. But the left is more practical
Hair down is prettier, but hair up is extremely practical. Can you imagine brushing hair out of your face during a fight?
That's what she does when she's on one heart. Move from hair down to hair uo
the left is more practical but the right has nicer shading, i think i'd go with the ponytail but make the shading more gradual like it is in the other version
Both for different scenes
Right is more rugged and wild.
Both look great, but the sword is a bit puny.
If it’s for a game you can find a way to include both
Left for a lot of reasons
left is better
tied up, out of the face while fighting. hair down should be for down time
It depends on the feeling you've made for your game, art, etc. The left makes her feel like she's prepared to be in combat as she's chosen the more utilitarian style. This makes her feel more seasoned and mature. The right however gives a sense of adventure and wonder like she's stumbled into the situation where she has to now combat dangers. Both look really good, so I think it comes down to the feeling that you're trying to convey.
She needs a giant sword NOW
if it was a game i'd recommend to make it optional
Definitely right side.
Right is far better. For one, it means you won't have an odd head shape when she moves, and two, hair down is always superior to hair up in all situations, except cooking and woodworking, obviously
left makes more sense for a fight and is simpler to animate but right looks intensely better
2nd one Def
Hair down, that's all.
Left will be easier to animate but right shows more movement.
Both, could be used for gameplay mechanics.
One guy mentioned health, I think it could be used for appearance throughout the story or something. Just spitballing
Might be in the minority but I really like the right!
Left for silhouette. Left seems younger and innocent, and right looks more mature and less cautious. In-game cinematics/cutscenes could change this, of course
I love the 2nd one personally, but both looks well drawn and fitting
I like the left for her casual look when she's out and about on her daily life. But the hair on the right looks like it would be cool to see in a scene where her hair tie gets cut during an epic battle and she has it flowing gracefully around the battlefield.
They're both great!
I think, if you have the resources, it could be cool to have her hair down at the beginning before the start of the grand adventure. Then, as she's getting ready, the hair goes in the ponytail because *now* she means business.
I like the second one, although the first seems more practical on the dev end
I feel like the right actually fits her outfit better but as others said, left would be easier to animate
left if it’s spring or summer. right if it’s fall or winter
Left looks better idk why
I'd say the left, I'd tie my hair back to sword fight
Right could be default one, but you could automatically switch to the left one when the character has to handle very dangerous situations like boss fights. Could add great detail to the game.
Her hair up seems more relistic if she is fighting
damn they both are lovely, I can't decide. but the left one looks like a start of the quest and right one is like an epic last boss fight where the character has lost her hair tie
the left one looks more childish whilst the right one looks a little more aged
I see an opportunity for a visual symbol of character progression.
Depends on what you want the characters look to say. The pony tail says young new adventurer and the wavy hair says seasoned and veteran adventurer
Feels like one is start of journey, one is end of journey, and either could be either.
Releasing the ponytail could represent getting over inhibitions as she gets stronger and more competent, while gaining the ponytail could represent thinking more tactically and being prepared for battle - not wanting her hair to get in the way of a fight.
I like both, personally i’d pick right
I’d say the personality traits of the character need to be taken into account as well
The right one looks much better in my opinion. But the left one would be more idealistic and realistic. Easier for animating. And doing anything with long hair down is a pain in the ass.
I will always vote ponytails.
\\(as a note for future comparison stuff. Having one background darker naturally inclines the eyes away from it to an extent for most viewers)
Give it the silhouette test. Which style allows this character silhouette to stand out from the rest of your characters.
First one I like because as a long hair haver - I ain’t doing anything above a light stroll with my hair not tied up. Shit gets all in my face. You can be sure that if I’m sword fighting my hair is tied up. So if I saw 1, I would think “whoever made this did their homework”
A is more practical and realistic
B is more esthetically pleasing
Take that what you will
Why not both?
(V) (°,,,,°) (V)
The hairstyle on the right would work better for a more “battle-damaged” look alongside some torn clothing and bruising/cuts.
But considering she looks otherwise perfectly fine I would go with the left.
I like both
Left cuz' hair gets in the way otherwise.
The second one
Left looks Better, it also depends on what you are going for
Left, just left
The one on the right is much more practical in the setting i can infer (fantasy action?). The second one would become tangled and nasty while the ponytail would be out of her eyes though more likely to be grabbed by a monster or enemy. A short style would be the most practical if your looking for realism. The stance with the sword could be a little more formal as well.
Pony all duh whey✨
My wife always points out when girls have their hair down in fight scenes and horror movies. From her perspective it’s self sabotaging. On her behalf, I vote hair up.
The one on the left
Left for sure
Depends on the game
I like the hair style on the left more.
Left one, its more realistic for battle.
The ponytail on the left! It gives the character a much more unique and easily-recognizable profile by far. A lot of people with long hair will also tie it back so that it doesn’t get in the way, which makes sense with her having a sword and looking ready to fight!
1 for readability.
You did great work on 2, but I think it would be too much in motion.
Hard to chose. Both are very nice.
Left. It's more practical anyway
Left is dressed to fight
Left, i think
I vibe with the ponytail more.
Left for workday stabbin', right for evening date night stabbin'.
The first one
Left but both look good.
the left one
The ponytail seems more practical. A rougeish sort of person might prefer the mobility.
Left is cool. Right is the mum
You could probably change it based off of the personality she is supposed to have someone who is hard working and independent will probably have their hair up and out of the way but if they're more laid back and don't do as much they would probably have their hair down more often
The ponytail looks better and will be easier to animate.
I'll go with the right one
Both are good, but I think the right suits the character's appearance more.
I like the left because of the updo, but I like how fluffy the hair is on the right way more than the ponytail on the left. Something about it just feels off.
Right because she looks more rugged and awesome like that like she’s not organized and I like her design
Right bc it's pretty
I like the ponytail way more because of how it allows the attention to fall on other parts of the design more, BUT I would consider taking some of the curls from the hair down and adding them to the ponytail, I think it would be the perfect mix then!
2 adds some awesome extra shapes and intrest to the silhouette
I like the look of the second one,
but the first definitely feels more practical.
- never swing a sword with your hair down
Untied, it makes the character feel more free
After reading the comments before me, I totally get the idea of why the tied up style has an advantage.
Jnpg and Wolfnpdx77 both make a fantastic point; giving the best of both worlds.
i like left but you should incorporate right somehow!
the right looks better however in this circumstance i think left
I like the ponytail but would make the actual ponytail/holder tighter/smaller as real ponytails aren’t that thick
If you don't care about more work, make them selectable styles.
It feels like it should start at one then transition to two
Left looks more young, right looks more serious. I prefer the right one.
I literally cannot decide. Change the color scheme of one of them so it can be two people!
This is tough. Both look really good. I like right looks better
The right looks better imo
