Ben Hodge was probably the best teacher I ever had. He’s still doing amazing work to this day.
Every school needs a "lightning rod" to fight the good fights on behalf of the students. He and Ms. Jackson certainly deserve to be nominated for the Profiles in Courage award.
People still kill cats and put them into the mailboxes of candidates for office? Seriously?
That man is such a freaking gem. The safe spaces he created for countless students is just something I wish everyone got to experience through his classes.
I didn't have Ms. Jackson, but I hear she was just as great for a lot of students.
Big +1 here, Hodge is a legend. Never had Ms. Jackson either but the people I knew back in HS who were close with her loved her
Same here. I ended up taking Theater Arts, Acting 1, & 2 with him. While also doing Reach throughout high school. He connects with students on a very real level, will never forget the things he did for me.
Same!! I still to this day have my Reach shirt and plan to keep it forever lol
Also not to mention how he had his students connecting with each other. My acting class was like family and it helped me to speak with people I never would have been able to connect with outside of class.
Damn, time really has flown...
“Safe spaces”. ROFLMAO.
Sorry if that wasn't your personal experience, but it was for many.
Says the person who probably supports book bans. The irony. Holy shit.
I’m for completely free speech. It’s only the left that bans ideas and people whose ideas they disagree with. Do you support President Trump being allowed in social media sites? If not, then you are the book burner.
Ok ok, hang on a sec. So you’re saying that if I don’t support a private company being able to decide who they let on their service, I don’t support free speech? Better check what country you’re in.
And who are these parent groups banning books across the country in higher numbers than ever before? They libs? Give me a fucking break. You know damn well who they are and whose politics they support.
So you admit you support banning speech you don’t agree with. You’ve lost any moral high ground to speak on the subject.
Wtf are you talking about lol
Liberals aren’t the ones limiting free speech by banning books, a historical indicator of a society descending into fascism.
Do you support President Trump being banned on social media? If you do, then you are a hypocrite.
Dr Suess, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, Huckleberry Finn all have been banned by liberals. Try to keep up.
Please provide a source on this claim.
I apparently “admit” to whatever the hell you want me to admit to lol
News flash: social media companies aren’t an arm of the government. They are private companies with codes of conduct they create and enforce in their ecosystems. Under the very free speech laws you’re acting like you understand, they have every right to kick people off their platforms who violate their codes of conduct.
Saying otherwise would, in fact, be supporting suppression of free speech.
If you don’t like it, then you’re most likely a liberal who wants the government to take more control over the private sector.
“Free speech” is not a right granted by the government. Free speech is a right we have as humans. That you think it’s ok to suppress that right leads me to believe you’d suppress other basic rights as well.
(Here’s a hint for when you get to middle school—the first amendment doesn’t grant rights, it acknowledges they exist and the government is prohibited from suppressing them. No charge for helping your 8th grade test score).
It doesn’t matter a flying fuck if the right is “recognized” or god-given or whatever other semantic games you wanna play: in this country, home of the free, a private company has every right to enforce the rules they make for their playground. You violate them, you get your ass kicked out.
You want the big bad government to come in and put your crying ass back because it makes you sad? You’re a flaming liberal, just admit it. Pathetic.
It exists one place. Without the Constitution, man, you don’t have it.
The Constitution talks zero on natural rights, literally zero.
I sure don’t. That’s why these left wing race-baiting divisive slime must be called out.
Not everyone wants to live their lives in a bigoted cesspool.
“I want every space to be hostile”
Welcome to the cesspool
I had great art teachers in Spring Grove but the way my wife and best friend talked about Mr Hodge showed he’s something special.
That is REALLY good Pennsylvania news!
Cyril writes great articles about the right-wing attacks against PA's public education and against its students. Usually focused on Bucks County and I am glad he ventured into York County for this article. Unfortunate that York County does not have an independent media outlet similar to the Beacon.
I'd love to see the same thing where we are, above Harrisburg, north Dauphin county,? Have to say I do love the people here, it's incredibly pleasant all around, but deeply red, bafflingly so. Factory workers, warehouse workers, farmers losing farms that have been in the family for generations- voting against their interests.
Maybe he'd be interested in sending out his staff? We really need no excellent news!
Are your local public school districts unthinkingly banning books?
So pay attention to your local school boards who suddenly vote on eliminating school librarians or library assistants (Happening now in North Allegheny)...it is the beginning of book bans in schools. Make no mistake. Library assistants are a fraction of most school budgets so any school board that is looking to get rid of those positions has a much larger agenda.
North Allegheny- where parents told Medical Doctors they knew more about Covid then any doctor because they did their “research”.
I can assure you the parents that showed up tonight were not the ones who were screaming about masks and fake Covid. NA is a huge district. The librarians and teachers who spoke were not the ones screaming for no masks. Obviously.
I was just pointing out the attitudes that are battling in that area. I know teachers in that district.
That attitude is an issue everywhere. NA is no exception. I don’t care who you “know”
This is not unusual. I can think of several examples from several school board meetings where folks not licensed to practice medicine claim to be pulmonologists or similar specialities and dispense medical advice.
You get that people show up to board meetings for different reasons right? Library cancelation and mask mandates are two entirely different issues. So you think everyone in NA told medical docs that they knew more about covid? You seem to be the fake news here or you have never been to a board meeting. Probably both.
Fake news - no it happened - it’s still out there on the internet. Just pointed out the struggles that the district has faced and could face in the future.
I never said they didn’t. What I said was that NA is a huge district and parents of all walks have different opinions about different issues. Just because some NA parents said they knew more about covid does not make the district as a whole anti science which is what you original comment implies.
Their comment doesn’t imply that. You inferred it.
Call them by their real name.
Let em. We ready.
That's the spirit!
Who will lead them, scrotum perry or lolligagging smucker? Or that kristen whatever her name is?
I really don't think we're talking enough about how conservatives are trying to ban books by black authors
Seems to be part of the overall package.
No fucking way, I know that teacher
As a current resident of the YCSD area, stories like this give me a lot of hope. Love hearing the stories from people who have had these teachers. I know this area is traditionally more red-leaning, but I'm seeing more and more Shapiro and Fetterman signs around here. Keep it going.
If you know folks who want yards signs, pm me.
Happy to hear. One of my good friends teaches English at Central York High.
Who is it? I may have had them. Class of 2015 here.
omg hi mike, it's alyssa 🤣
Know anyone still trying to set up a Little Library near their house?
Omigod this is so good to hear. I lived in York for a few years while very young. The stories my parents have about the racism there are horrific. One of their dear friends was forced to barricade in their home while being targeted by the klan.
My mother taught elementary school there and introduced the American Doll books on Addy to her class and received a lot of backlash from fellow teachers and administrators. This was over 20 years ago.
I’m elated to see this win, even if small in the grand scheme of things.
Central York is not the City of York.
I was in central York
Twenty years ago was the early 2000's. Holy shit. This would be fucked up happening in the 70's (well, any time really, but the farther back you go the more typical rovert racism was a thing) ! I can't believe there are still places like this.
Uh, in 1971 hershey was forced to integrate their work force. The union said "Milton was rolling in his grave". My mother tells me stories in the 60s where they would bus Black children in only on Tuesdays to swim in the pool in Lebanon co and that they were told to never go to the pool Wednesday because they might catch something.
I grew up in the south (sc/nc) and am in my middle 30s. My extended family lives in york/lebanon/Lancaster. They are some of the most openly racist folks I know. May be not towards Black folks, but Latinos? Oh you know it.
Yup! My parents also lived in Mississippi in the late 90s and the stories they have from there are even worse.
My little Montco town has been solidly red for generations but turned blue during the Trump regime. Fingers crossed in hopes of even bluer skies.
Proud of you!!!!
Wow I had her 20 years ago! Makes me proud to see this. Did not expect to see her face on the internet today. Sad the city district lost her though
The school board president at Central almost hit my truck. I was driving my truck through the parking lot at Sam's Club and this Honda Accord started zipping all through the parking lot. She very nearly hit me but stopped just in time. I looked up and it was her.
I wouldn't have recognized her but my family knows that one outside of school.
Where was the joke, exactly?
Cool! Gonna go there and check out Protocols of the Elders of Zion, no book should be banned
Telling everyone you read antisemitic nonsense ain’t the own you thought it was. That your mind went there first tells everyone about the exact kind of person you are.
Every time I see posts like this I think its such a shame that the conspiracy sub got taken over by actual wing nuts.
Take a joke bud
A joke is funny.
Your comment is not.
Ah yes, the modern day right-wing fallback of it all just being joke. And then they wonder why no one takes their sincere beliefs seriously.
Biggest pile of shit comment ive read in a while.
Reading about the Protocols of the Elders of Zion actually hurts the White Nationalist agenda, because it's obvious horseshit that has to be carefully fed to somebody for them to fall for it.
What was the book in question?
