Tested last week live in lgs and initiative mechanic seems underrated. Definitely will impact the format imho. It’s a shame that now we have a splitted format between live and mtgo.
Nice, tell me more about the initiative please
And if you could compare with Monarch would be good
Monarch is still better on average imho. Card advantage ftw.
Initiative is a very strong complement. At this time of testing Faeries seems the better shell for both mechanics, because can defend and control the board very good. Right now to me it seems that both monarch and initiative can steal a game if you can defend it for good or even for a couple of turns. Instead, if you can’t, game will be a nightmare and will end in loss in a blink.
Outside of faeries I think that initiative can boost a lot also mono black but I’ve not tested yet.
Here is a quick breakdown of the big hitters.
1. initiative is amazing. Also pairs great w/monarch
2. Kenku is broken in jeskai emphemerate or Fams making indestructible 3/3 fliers
3. Gates are mediocre
4. Others are yet to be tested
Interesting things. I'd like to test Kenku in Jeskai
I tried (on paper) Avenging Hunter (instead of Owlbear), Dread Linnorm and Lantern of Revealing (instead of Gruul Locket) in Gruul and Temur Ponza and I really love them, especially the Inititive Dragon!
I can see the Hunter in the deck, I wonder what the Lantern is doing? At a point where it can be activated, we probably don't need more lands. Is it getting the land off the top to draw something better?
Do you cut Altisaurs for the Linnorm?
So Lantern Purpose is just ramp/fixings and cut off lands or bad draws when you don’t have any more threats to cast from your hand. I for the moment I don’t play bolts and those slots were occupied by two Linnorm (as a pseudo removal, protection, combat trick) and two Jewel Thief (which plays nicely with the second room activation or the ultimate for those juice +1/1 counters). I like those additions by I think I’ll switch back to some bolts instead of Thief. By the way you can see the deck in Moxfield website, looking for Temur in Undercity (AmazingCascaders is my brewer name). In this list you’ll see even the Aaracockra Sneak, trying to maximize the Dungeon bonuses while having a strong flier against bully and faes. Check it out, the list need probably some arrangements but it works pretty nicely!
Thanks! I just built a pretty vanilla Gruul list and wanted to wait for 2x2 to get the new Mulldrifters and then probably switch to Temur but maybe I should test the Initiative things before. Ulting the Dungeon seems to be awesome with this deck.
Yeah Ulting it it feels always pretty easily when you can cast multiple Initiative creatures on the same turn thanks to the mana ramp, hence why Jewel Thieves instead of Sarulf’s Packmate (which I prefer though), you usually finish the Undercity in 2/3 turns. The ultimate is basically a better Cascade effect with 100% choice on which creature to cast, no mana value limitations and some nice protection/pump bonuses. Playing a 9/6 hasty and hexproof Pirates or an mostly Unblockable 10/9 Linnorm felt nice and game ending.
New Mulldrifter are really cool but I prefer the old promo version Art, in which Mulldrifter seems a dragon lol.
You could probably switch Linnorm for two Mulldrifters or for some bolts/fire and Ice. Mulldrifters are valid, the last 2 options not so much because they make creatures count lesser though, which is not ideal for the Undercity Ultimate, exposing you to some unlucky fails.
\[\[Lantern of Revealing\]\] is quite a good addition for mana fixing and potential card advantage/ramp, but it's no bonder's ornament, sadly.
\[\[Arms of Hadar\]\] has potential, it's a good boardwipe that goes through boros protection, which gives it edge vs other boardwipes
\[\[Avenging Hunter\]\] and \[\[Aarakocra Sneak\]\] is a nice replacement to monarch or you can run both altogether. I'd say avenging is a better Owlbear, sneak is good for decks that needs more mana fixing like 3c+ ephemerate decks
I forgot to mention Arms, it’s good as well

Lantern and Kenku could be nice in Jeskai.
kenku could be nice but journey to nowhere is a thing and you risk losing your land to it, it feels like a winmore card where you can just flicker soul of migration for more fliers instead or flicker aarakocra sneak to expedite dungeon triggers. I still think sea gate oracle is a better 3 drop
I think Kenku is better for grixis affinity because you can make blood fountain and other artifacts a 3/3 beater
I played 3 rounds of jeskai ephemerate in paper. Kenku artificer outlived my already high expectations. Its so good.
I really wonder how Initiative would be doing in the MTGO meta. Or in paper pauper in general.
If you're willing to dig thru the market and pay through the nose you can get some of the CLB cards on MTGO. I'm waiting it out myself.
The lantern card is boss in pestilence IMO
is Kenku Artifcer in the MTGO yet? or most people were just panicking because "affinity bad" and the card underperformed?
Kenku is not in mtgo yet.
Yes, it's very difficult to deal with 3/3 indestructible flying creatures. Bouncing them takes care of them temporarily but blinking Kenku brings them back. One thing people overlook is that since the land has been on the battlefield, the 3/3's that Kenku makes are swinging the same turn he comes down.
As expected initiative is very good if you're playing a grindy deck, but going all in on it leaves you open losing aggressive matchups. If you're able to sit on the initiative you win.
How do they get indestructible?
Put them on an indestructible artifact dual land.
Oh ofc, thanks!
Prized Statue is ridiculous good in affinity I had a blast with it. The kenku was on the deck but didnt come up
On paper, kenku is really broken in jeskai, the biggest downside is having enough artifact lands after rebounding the ephemerate.
I really hope Jeskai back to the times the deck was important in the metagame, but not broken like another decks we had.
What a putty we can't test in mtgo =/
Most likely on paper but I doubt it can ever get popular on Mtgo without kenku, the deck really needs a good artifact payoff besides galvanic blast and currently that doesn’t exist unless you go mardu
Yeah, without Kenku is hard
i tested kenku in jeskai ephemerate at an irl tournament and i’m in love with the card. still fine tuning my list but it’s a great card.
Glad to hear that
I put [[basilisk gate]] along with the other gates in orzhov pestilence and it has worked surprisingly well as a way to quickly finish off a game with [[guardian of the guildpact]]
