First post, my favourite cave in Alabama. Shot on Sony A7r3. We’ve always repelled and shot around during the day but wanted to switch it up since we’ve never done it at night.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmfarts

This is absolutely, totally, extremely, unequivocally *horrifying*

treywlker

It’s actually a very rewarding, euphoric feeling once we killed the lights and just hung 100 feet up in complete dark.

useles-converter-bot

100 feet is the length of exactly 299.25 '20 Tones Blues Harmonica For Adults, Beginners, Professionals and Students(Silver grey)' lined up next to each other

iAmBlackiSwear

Never have I witnessed something so truly useless.

TexasTeardrops

You must not be on reddit much then.

juggmanjones

Good bot

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmfarts

That’s gotta be a very cool sensation

treywlker

Very much so.

dontquestionmedamnit

Where was this? I’m from bama and genuinely curious, Huntsville?

ThatGreenGuy8

I wanna do this

RootInTheRedHat

You scare easy I guess

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmfarts

Gaslighting is cute.

Revolutionary-Cod-93

lol I thought this was an underwater photo

treywlker

Haha nah! When it’s heavy rains the bottom does flood a bit.

greasygetdown

Seriously looks like a promo shot from “Abyss”

Stonetown_Radio

Same

indieaz

This is awesome. This is also nightmare fuel. Going into a cave at night...cue underground bat-like horror movie creatures.

treywlker

It’s does have a very ‘the descent’ vibe to it.

Stonetown_Radio

Pro photog here. Great shot! I’d love to shoot something like this!! Bravo

treywlker

Thank you! I’m a full time photo/video guy but still working to become a ‘pro’!

Nalu247

Neat pic but you guys are cray cray.

treywlker

Haha maybe a bit

2oceans1

WTF , WHY has this got no votes. Beautiful shot. Damn 👍🙌🏻

treywlker

Thanks 🤘🏽

2oceans1

I looked at your “shit” damn you are in the top 1% of the top 10%. Damn you’re good 👌

treywlker

Thanks a ton!

2oceans1

🙏🏻🥇

2oceans1

Cool 2.1k up votes. Should go viral

timzecho

Wow!

treywlker

Thanks!

antonio851

Wow. I’m from Alabama and never knew this existed…

treywlker

I hear this a lot actually haha

laaplandros

Literally got me to say "holy shit" out loud.

treywlker

I said that on the way down haha.

No_Maybe6194

Looks like a scene from Alien

treywlker

Haha it could be. We never know what’s done there

ThatGreenGuy8

Omg i wanna do this so bad Sadly no caves in the boring Netherlands

Bryson_30

Where is it?

GeiCobra

This place is called Stephens Gap. You’ll need a permit but they’re easy to get.

Bryson_30

Ok tyvm

southernfriedsloth

love Stephen's gap neversink pit is a cool one too

Ambitious_Door_4911

By Alabama did you mean an Asteroid?

treywlker

Yes, could be the same thing.

Too_Steezy

This would be a dope movie poster. Well done!

the_real_deal_D

Epic picture man!!! Now when I recover from acl surgery I want to be more active and get in to things of this nature.

treywlker

Good luck man!!!

kitty_glitterz

How lucky are you?!

treywlker

I am pretty blessed haha

EinTheDataDoge

Y’all gunna fight Pennywise?

treywlker

Might as well while we’re down there

2x4_Turd

So did you climb down to the spot your in by yourself then yell at your buddy you're ready for him to repel? Really neat shot.

treywlker

Yeah, so there’s two entrances to the cave, one you can walk down. For the shots we did, we set up down below after walking down and our buddy repelled down when we would flash a light. Yelling doesn’t work all to well and we didn’t have any walkies.

YungBootyCheez

Amazing shot holy shit

treywlker

🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

azulTipan

Very nice! Remember when I hung 100 feet above a mine shaft. Glad to see I'm not the only adventurer out there! May you be safe on your adventures!

treywlker

Always!

Delta_Electronica

This is purely stunning, I couldn’t imagine the view in person!

treywlker

Haha it’s dark.

Delta_Electronica

Nothing through the moonlight at the top or is that all flashlight or editing?

treywlker

Super bright flashlight. It was cloudy so we had no moonlight to work with.

Delta_Electronica

Wow, that for sure is one damn good flashlight! Happy and safe spelunking my dude!

treywlker

Yeah! Always!

deck_hand

This is one of my favorite caves as well. I've got a bunch of old pictures from this cave, most from the top while people are getting on rope. This is a fantastic photo. Great job.

treywlker

Would over to see some images! I’ve gone a ton throughout the years. Really wish it didn’t blow up as much as it did as of late.

bluejonquil

I love that place! Especially when the water is flowing.

treywlker

It’s flowing a bit in the image, just hard to tell. I love a good rain before I go.

phasermodule

This is like the start of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge

captainaeternus

This can straight up become a poster/cover for a film/videogame without any more edit.

treywlker

That’d be awesome!

ContributionKey4651

This is Stephen's Gap. Been there 20 times or more. Never rappelled since you can literally just walk in. Have you done Neversink Pit?

treywlker

Not yet. I just got the ascending gear to do it!

ContributionKey4651

Saweet. My brother and I were wanting to take it on, but we've wandered around the woods twice and been unable to find that particular sink. I was in contact with someone from the southeastern cave conservancy a few years ago, but I've lost his email now. We had the same issue trying to find surprise pit at fern cave preserve. I feel like we found every entrance besides that one lol.

treywlker

What’s really terrifying is if you miss the trail on SG, there’s another pit that you can literally fall in if you don’t pay attention. It’s not marked very well. I need to try and do neversink soon. Lately I’ve just been climbing at Cheaha St Park.

ContributionKey4651

Yeah, I know which pit you're talking about. It's right by the trail. It's pretty deep too. I've never been able to see the bottom, just huge boulders that are presumably resting in the cave floor. I always found it interesting that those tunnels go directly towards the highway and cathedral caverns is almost directly across from it. Makes me wonder if they're connected somewhere deep underground. I've actually never been to Cheaha before. We've done most of our climbing in Bankhead NF. Is Cheaha mostly limestone?

treywlker

It’s Quartzite rock.

ccmitch84

Which cave is this?

Ok_Ice_9108

Looks great, I think you'll find Gollum down there

hellsnebula

I have some friends who got engaged there. Gorgeous spot.

treywlker

Yeah, we’ve seen that a few times haha

Fathertedisbrilliant

How do you get out?

treywlker

You land on the pedestal below and hop off.

Fathertedisbrilliant

So is there a different entrance somewhere? You don't exit the cave via the same chasm?

treywlker

You can ascend back up, or you can go out the way most people come in, which is through the hiking entrance.

yerwan_viv

This is national geographic good! I hope you enter it into a competition, fantastic!

treywlker

I wouldn’t even know where to enter it haha

yerwan_viv

Had a Google, they don't seem to have updated their photo contest page since 2019! They sometimes do an Instagram photo contest.... either way, here's a poor person award from me🥇

Showermineman

ALABAMA??? Where! You must tell

Infuryous

Looks like a movie poster for a Horror Movie 😁 Great picture!

BGdaShoota

Never seen the The Ruins or The Cave huh? Couldn’t do that shit if you paid me.

treywlker

I’ve seen both haha.

BGdaShoota

Balls of steel my friend. Crazy shot btw

Shawdow3

If you're from Alabama, or even in Alabama, please don't spell favorite with a "u".

treywlker

Don’t tell me how to type.

Shawdow3

Ok.
