I've always loved this picture, because it looks like they're in someone's basement and one of their Dads is about to yell down to ''Turn down that music and take out the garbage!''
Oh wow I thought y’all were commenting on their styles being very reminiscent of those people.
And then I realized, “Oh, no no no that’s ACTUALLY them. Like that’s the for real guys, that’s definitely Chris’s eyes, Kim’s beard. Eddie’s whateverness.”
Far left - Stone Gossard, guitar, Pearl Jam
Second - Dave Abbruzzese, drummer, Pearl Jam at rhe time. Best 90’s rock drummer in the world at the time
To his right - Kim Thayil, lead guitar, soundgarden
In front of Kim - Eddie Vedder, lead singer Pearl Jam
Behind Kim - Ben Shepherd, bass, soundgarden
To the right of Vedder - Matt Cameron. Drummer, soundgarden and now the drummer of Pearl Jam
Behind Cameron - Jeff Ament, bass, Pearl Jam
Right of Cameron - Mike McCready, lead guitar, Pearl Jam
Far right - Chris Cornell, lead singer Soundgarden and baddest motherfucker to ever live RIP.
They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore
>'To his right - Hiro Yamamoto, bass, soundgarden'

Abbruzzese had chops but at a time when Jimmy Chamberlin and Danny Carey were both on the scene you can't seriously claim he was the best rock drummer at the time.
Hell, Matt Cameron was also absolutely killing it back then and he's in the same picture.
Nitpicking here, but how can Dave Abruzzese be the best 90s rock drummer when he's in the same room as Matt Cameron? I mean he's good, but he's not MFC.
It's all about your style and the music you're playing... Chad Channing was arguably a much better drummer than Dave Grohl, but Grohl's style was a much better match for the sound of Nirvana.
Dating a beautiful girl in Seattle in the late 80s. She was a U-dub student, and I was in the Navy at Whidbey Island. She lived in the U-dub district just off campus and I remember she excitedly told me that Hiro Yamamoto (the bassist ben replaced) moved into her building.
A week later she dumped me for him.
I wasn’t even mad. How could I be?
I still remember buying my first Soundgarden CD and hearing his voice belt out, “You hide!!! Your eyes!!! But the ugly truth just loves to give it away!” Fucking chills man
Grunge is the only music I ever listened to growing up. It's my whole world. I absolutely adore Alice in Chains, and as much as I enjoy Staley's voice, I don't understand how someone would put him in the same category as Cornell.
Layne has a very unique sound to his voice, and he has range. But, other than the novelty of how it sounds, I don't think he is comparable to Chris Cornell. It's kind of like Scott Weiland. Dude has an awesome voice, and I love hearing him sing - but it's not very good (technically speaking).
Cornell has such complex vocals and boundless range. However, I see this opinion about Staley being the best quite frequently, so it's cool to see Layne Staley get so much recognition decades later. I'm sure he would have appreciated it.
It's always cool to see everyone's opinions.
I personally think Freddie Mercury has the most proficient voice, all things considered. Chris Cornell has such range and haunting beauty to his singing, that he is #2, but will always be my favorite of all time.
Soft disagree on Weiland, not a fan of the human being (and vaguely warm towards STP), but he had some real pipes. He showcased his vocals more on Tiny Music-Vatican Gift Shop rather than Core and Purple.
And no disrespect to Layne Staley, but it seems odd that every time someone says Chris Cornell was the greatest, someone always has to jump in and say "No, Layne Staley was better!" It's not an affront to Staley's memory or talent for people to prefer Cornell; they're apples and oranges in terms of their approaches to singing...just like it's not an insult to Cornell's legacy for some people to prefer Staley.
I really like how you worded your second paragraph. I think you encapsulated my feelings much better in your own words.
STP will always be my favorite band of all time. I was devastated when I heard of Weilands passing. Especually knowing he was only 20 minutes away from me, and I never got the opportunity to see them together.
It would have been tough to get a shot anyways, given the tenous relationship between the band members.
I promised myself that I need to see Pearl Jam live, because I have always pushed it back, thinking "another time". But it's just Eddie now that the rest have all passed on. Never been more upset than missing out on Chris Cornell in person.
Holy shit that throwback Doritos bag gave me serious waves of nostalgia.
Look how young both Cornell and Vedder look; 13 year old me had quite a lot of taste because I was madly in love with both of them.
That's about as cool as it gets in 1992. Soundgarden AND Pearl Jam, straight chilling. SG and PJ being band besties in the 90s restores my faith in humanity.
The Talent / Ego ratio in this picture is incredible.
The Seattle scene should be remembered for how close those bands really were. There was no Axl Rose bullshit going on. Just dudes who loved playing music with their friends.
It was a *great* time to be in Seattle if you loved music.
They definitely were. You might have a flashback of them if you look up the old commercials on youtube. They usually had the song "Good Day SUnshine" but not performed by the Beatles.
I have a printing from this photoshoot by the original photographer! (Jay Blakesberg) In mine Stone Gossard is looking away nonchalantly with his hand on Dave Abbruzzese’s crotch. Eddie Vedder’s shirt says “I buy music for minors”. It’s really quite the photo. 🤌
I remember idolizing the teens/young adults I knew as a child in the 90s. I thought they were just the coolest shit. I'm still trying to capture that cool.
I mean, I went on a holiday to Portland, Oregon and half the population still looks like that.
Also, if only Chris Cornell was English he’d still be with us.
Fully understand what you mean. I should have worded my comment "less unhappy" rather than happy.
If I could go back, there's so much I would change, but my choice of music would stay the same
Back row: Ben Shepard, Jeff Ament. Middle row: Stone Gossard, Dave Abruzzese, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Mike McReady, Chris Cornell. Front row: Eddie Vedder.
I was browsing pianos one time and found this tiny mini-grand that just had the BEST sound. I was trying to figure out if I could move my entire place around to fit a mini-grand (I couldn’t) but in the meantime the sales guy came over and said “yea that one’s not for sale. Sorry.” Turns out Mike McCreedy had gotten to it before me. Sunovabitch beat me to the prettiest piano I ever played.
I was 30 years old in '92. A lot of people my age say good rock music died in the early 80s but I think the 90's put out some of the best music ever recorded.
Controversial opinion but I think Dave Abbruzzeze was Pearl Jam's best drummer. There for all their best performances like Pinkpop, unplugged to name a few and Eddie was kind of a little Hitler at the time who did Dave dirty.
First I saw was Kim Thayal. Thought he was wearing a caveman mask for Halloween. Then I noticed Matt Camron and started to realize I was looking at a slice of history, including Kim Thayal. This is old school cool as it gets.
It was cool when I was 2, it was cool when I was 12, and it was cool here when I was 22. Still cool when I turned 32. Loved it better when I was 42. Thinking it’s friggin awesome at 52. HGTV tries to hard with the damn greys and navy blues. It’s a room a thousand years wide. That panelling has evenflow. It’s a four walled world. ( so cool)
I've always loved this picture, because it looks like they're in someone's basement and one of their Dads is about to yell down to ''Turn down that music and take out the garbage!''
That 90s show
The opening sketch for Michael Jackson’s black and white video featuring Macaulay Culkin was prime 90’s dad “TURN THAT DOWN!” shenanigans.
Eat this!
There is certainly weed off camera
That apple is definitely a pipe!
"Good night, Wisconsin!"
I can smell this picture.
It’s got a real Wayne’s World vibe.
Beach house
Chris Cornell chillin on the right.
Not to mention the rest of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam
I recognized him and Eddie in the middle
Kim Thayil is pretty hard to miss
Oh wow I thought y’all were commenting on their styles being very reminiscent of those people. And then I realized, “Oh, no no no that’s ACTUALLY them. Like that’s the for real guys, that’s definitely Chris’s eyes, Kim’s beard. Eddie’s whateverness.”
No, that’s Doritos and Sun Chips in the middle.
Sunchips were VERY 90s. That was my favourite flavour too 👍🏼
I still love sun chips! I feel like they just have the perfect amount of flavor/powder
Both important members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
Lieutenant Dan! You got new legs!
Came here to say the same thing. OP friends with Cornell?
This isn’t a pic of OP. This is a pic of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam
And wood panels
Thems was the dayz
Pretty hard to miss Kim Thayil. Then I saw the rest of em.
To be fair, Kim Thayil may or may not have been the coolest guy in the room at any given time.
No it’s Temple of the Dog.
No not really. It’s the full lineups from both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
Who’s beside Cornell? Is that Jason Everman?
Mike McCready
Ben Shepard is in the back on the left. Everman was in Kuwait already serving his country by this point.
... also known as The Temple of the Dog.
Yeah and Pearl Jam front center
Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were dope but it's the wood paneling that gives me the feels.
I love all three!
And the old school Doritos bag on the table!
And the plastic fruit smh
Pretty sure it’s real. One apple has either been partially eaten or made into a smoking device.
I'm going hungryyyyyy
I'm goin HungreeeeeeeAAAAAAAAAEREYAAAAHHH
I don't mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence...
Say ‘Hello’ to Heaven
I didn't know it was the holy land, Bud I believed from the minute the cheque left my hand

Man I have been googling this stoned for 5 mins Thank you I knew I didn’t have it right Fixed
Matt Cameron was, and still is the best grunge drummer
So good he was in TWO legendary grunge bands (Pearl Jam and Soundgarden).
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Sean Kinney from AIC
MC did some awesome work in Soundgarden (on Superunknown and Down specifically). But my God, he is boring in PJ.
I watched the movie Singles, this past Monday :)
I love Abbruzzese too, but I'd vote Jimmy Chamberlin as best rock drummer at the time.
Seeing him play tonight 🤘
Came here to say this.
Abbruzzese had chops but at a time when Jimmy Chamberlin and Danny Carey were both on the scene you can't seriously claim he was the best rock drummer at the time. Hell, Matt Cameron was also absolutely killing it back then and he's in the same picture.

Im sayin! Someone needs to listen to Jesus Christ Pose for a refresher.
It's all about your style and the music you're playing... Chad Channing was arguably a much better drummer than Dave Grohl, but Grohl's style was a much better match for the sound of Nirvana.
Recently found out that Chris was my 3rd cousin
but who is in the picture in the striped shirt?
No one sings like them anymore*
Still looks cool to me.
Came here to say this. This picture could explain “cool” to aliens - It’ll never not be cool.

LMFAO UNDERRATED COMMENT
Dating a beautiful girl in Seattle in the late 80s. She was a U-dub student, and I was in the Navy at Whidbey Island. Aw Kate
Nah that’s like… I would’ve been pissed if she passed him up in favor of staying with my dumbass. In fact, I would’ve broken up with her, actually.
RIP Chris, the best damn male vocalist in rock history. Well, to me anyway
for me it's him and Layne
Layne Staley forever, man.
Amen
I still remember buying my first Soundgarden CD and hearing his voice belt out, “You hide!!! Your eyes!!! But the ugly truth just loves to give it away!” Fucking chills man
What a great song. The pre-Badmotorfinger stuff usually gets overlooked from the SG canon, but Ultramega OK kicked some serious ass.
Freddie Mercury would like to have a word. Maybe the best of a generation.
He said rock
As opposed to Queen, of "We Will Pop You" fame
And…what the frack do you think Queen was? Soul? They were Rock Gods.
Love Chris, but Layne Staley takes this one imo.

Man I love this time… best time of my life.
2 of the best drummers of the 90s right there.
I think Dave is GOAT. Not a big Matt Cameron fan
Oh really? Man, Cameron is a sneaky motherfucker. Weird little fills and accents come outta nowhere and his hi-hat work is awesome.
Just chillin in Gramma's basement with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam
I always thought Kim thayil was cool as fuck
Holy shit that throwback Doritos bag gave me serious waves of nostalgia. Look how young both Cornell and Vedder look; 13 year old me had quite a lot of taste because I was madly in love with both of them.
Me too. 😍
A plate of fruit?!
My mom made me bring it.
Fruit is an amazing snack, and even more so when you're high.
PJ and Soundgarden as kids
Dammit Chris.
Dude in the middle with the bears made me think he had crazy eyebrows and tiny eyes.
Kim Thayil
*beard *
Me too!
That's about as cool as it gets in 1992. Soundgarden AND Pearl Jam, straight chilling. SG and PJ being band besties in the 90s restores my faith in humanity.
There are three complete bands in this photo.
Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are peak early 90s cool. But man, there are a *lot* of future “gone-too-soon” dudes in this picture 😕
There's only one not with us anymore, but its enough to validate your statement.
Thanks for that! I honestly had it in my head that more OG members of both were gone
The picture is ice cold!!! And they say you can’t be cooler than absolute zero… check mate scienticians
Stone living up to his name out here. Dave A with the dreads and vampire Kim lol. This is the OG mookey blaylock and sound garden
The Talent / Ego ratio in this picture is incredible. The Seattle scene should be remembered for how close those bands really were. There was no Axl Rose bullshit going on. Just dudes who loved playing music with their friends. It was a *great* time to be in Seattle if you loved music.
Ah the “we’re watching point break while listening to Soundgarden” vibe
M-m-m-m-m-mookie!
Wait! Sun Chips were around back then? No way. I would have been 16-17 back then. How did I not know this
They definitely were. You might have a flashback of them if you look up the old commercials on youtube. They usually had the song "Good Day SUnshine" but not performed by the Beatles.
You know it's the PNW because...........Sun Chips.
It’s at the shoreline in Mountain View, CA
I smell Seattle
It's that teen spirit.
I’m not convinced that Dave Abbruzzese was ever that cool.
I miss Chris Cornell
I just miss all of it.
You guys about to drop the hottest album ever?
U born in a barn Chris? Get ya feet off the damned table ya filthy animal! RIP. We miss you.
I didn’t really recognize anyone specific until I saw Chris Cornell and I was like “YO WHAT?” And the rest of the faces came together for me
Me: that guy is nailing the Kim Thayil style. Me, with 15 seconds greater wisdom: I'm an idiot.
Temple of the Dog
Nope. This is later - Dave Abbruzzese is already in the band.
I mean, they're not wrong. All members of Temple of the Dog are also pictured here.
That was backstage at Lollapalooza 1992 in Seattle. At that moment that room was the coolest place on earth.
“Olds cool”
Stone and Dave and Kim and Ed and Jeff and Matt and Mike and Chris
...you forgot Ben...😢
“We will never be as cool as Mudhoney” Maynard Hatfield.
Eddie Vedder is a whole life of being one sexy motherfucker
I have a print from the negative of this photo. One of the coolest things I own.
People love to post this picture but not the awesome photog: Jay Blakesberg
Apologies. Didn’t know of him till I saw his name in an earlier comment. Looked him up. He is INCREDIBLE! Great photos all around! TIL!!
Chris Cornell is my god.
This looks like you got 1 of each friend group in high school and took a picture. Except the straight edge kid. Guy on the left is reppin the jocks.
I remember idolizing the teens/young adults I knew as a child in the 90s. I thought they were just the coolest shit. I'm still trying to capture that cool.
Jason Momoa seems to be enjoying himself.
Kim Thayil.
Jay Blakesberg took this, no?
Correct!
WITH THE BOYS Will always be cool (and a great time)!
If you want to feel old.. look at Kim Thayil now. He’s like an old Indian grandfather.
Apples, Doritos and Heinekens. Y’all cool AF!
Stone Gossard on the far left, I think
Kim Thayil behind A very young Eddie Vedder.
Im sure no weed was smoked there
Absolutely none, you can be sure of it!
I mean, I went on a holiday to Portland, Oregon and half the population still looks like that. Also, if only Chris Cornell was English he’d still be with us.
They're definitely sunglasses right? And not really bushy eyebrows.
Still cool, and effortlessly so.
Have you seen teenagers lately? This is cool again. Just saw two teen girls wearing slipknot tshirts and jnco's
Kim Thayil lookin rad too
Last supper, grunge edition
Such a rad picture though. Love Chris Cornell.
You know what’s cooler? more pixels
Temple of the Dog, chilling in your living room? THAT'S fucking cool!
I wish I could go back to this time in my life. I was happy then.
I was absolutely miserable then but these guys were all that got me through it. I'm nostalgic nonetheless.
Fully understand what you mean. I should have worded my comment "less unhappy" rather than happy. If I could go back, there's so much I would change, but my choice of music would stay the same
Still cool AF.
Guy in the middle looks like George McFly and Dax Shepard put together
Sick
Eddie Vedder was so handsome. I actually can’t believe it.
Jason Momoa?
Was Black Hole Sun playing in the background?
This generation was fucking cool. I was 11
Chris and Eddie?
My generation, too. Soundgarden. Shame Cornell’s gone. 🙁
Temple of the dog
Back row: Ben Shepard, Jeff Ament. Middle row: Stone Gossard, Dave Abruzzese, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Mike McReady, Chris Cornell. Front row: Eddie Vedder.
Stone Gossard rocking a Milwaukee Bucks shirt
That’s my friends and me!! /s
Do you see!! Not a single phone in sight, and this picture was taken by actual camera.
Chris Cornell <3
Aaahh, nearly all my teen crushes in one picture. Eddiiieeee..... Chrisss...!!!
Y’all were pretty cool. Id hang with ya.
Sausage Fest 1992
When some of the greatest bands in history are hanging out writing music and practicing, nobody thinks of it is a sausage fest
Those 90's Kids In That 70's Room
Did we all watch Singles btw? Best soundtrack of our generation?
Go bucks
First I saw was Kim Thayal. Thought he was wearing a caveman mask for Halloween. Then I noticed Matt Camron and started to realize I was looking at a slice of history, including Kim Thayal. This is old school cool as it gets.
I can smell this pic
I miss the early nineties and it makes me sad we can't go back.
It’s so sad that is all gone now, everybody is obsessed with these rectangles of death 🥲
This is a reminder that the 90s actually smelled bad.
Kids these days don't know shit. Too busy posing for selfies to be cool.
This will never not be cool!
Right, right. Let's get you to bed, Grandma.
Damn how much heroin was in this room?
None
Irony: that wood paneling was never cool, in any decade, ever.
( so cool)
