Old school…cool? My mother (3) and her brother Fernand (6), Belgium 1936.

snakebill

Great pic but I can’t help but feel bad knowing what was coming in the next few years. Other than obviously your mother, did they all get through the war ok?

WanderingKingsFan

Thats exactly what I think when I see pics of people in Europe in the 30's. They're about to get rocked.

CableTrash

Eerie to realize that someone in the future could potentially think the same thing about us right now.

Concrete__Blonde

Assuming there will be people in the future.

phjils

“Every generation believes they will be the last” to paraphrase Game of Thrones.

JohnnyRelentless

Eventually one of those generations will be right. Or not.

Yogagrrl3961

Like a photo of ANYONE February 2020?

jasmine_tea_

Bambi was made before WW2. Something so innocent was created before so much violence eruoted in Europe.

nomofica

The film was released during the middle of the Second World War, and the original book it was based on was released during the middle of the First World War.

FartHeadTony

The book was written *after* big war one, released in 1923 and the English translation came in 1928. The film rights were bought in 1933 or 1936 (different sources), but production didn't start until 1939 and finally released in 1942. Big war: the sequel had an impact on the production, for sure. The studio's finances were hit by the war since they didn't make so much money from Fantasia (1940) and Pinocchio (1940) due to war in Europe. There were also of course labour and other economy issues in US, as well as the general sombre mood and eventual entry of US into Antifa: The War. Bambi was re-released several times, but didn't really break the box office until the re-release in the 50s. I guess that was when the first baby boomers were old enough to go to the cinema in droves.

Lifeboatb

I was bothered by how distant Bambi’s father seems in the movie, and a friend pointed out that probably a lot of kids viewed their own fathers that way at the time, since so many were away at war.

Pun-Master-General

So what I'm hearing is that if another adaptation gets announced, we should be very, very worried.

JohnnyBoy239

Uh oh

ednastvincent

I have a sweet picture of my grandma as a child with her family on a beach in southern France in 1939 and it strikes me as so sad knowing what’s on the horizon.

GhostTrees

>I can’t help but feel bad knowing what was coming in the next few years. Other than obviously your mother Fucking savage.

Terrible-Control6185

Are we still doing phrasing?

trimbandit

there was a war?

It was little skirmish. Nothing too bad.

Any history buffs out there?

IDrinkUrMilksteak

In the early part of the century, Germany decided to go to war. And who did they decide to go to war with…?

Real-Man-A-Rod

The World; and it was close too

Lachrondizzle23

I heard that Hitler guy wasn't too friendly

JamesonGreen

I heard he was a real jerk

massepasse

Don't mention the war!

fnord_bronco

I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.

PMmePMsofyourPMs

_I don’t agree with that in the workplace!_

jasonreid1976

Ah, the rare Fawlty Towers reference. Don't see too many of those.

cocktopus-calamari

Don't make me run, I'm full of chocolate.

happycamsters

Just another small European issue.

das_Rathaus

They had to diet for a while afterwards.

MarauderAtlas

Why do the trousers look like the bottom half of a mummy?

raouldukesaccomplice

I was thinking it looked like they have hooves instead of feet.

space-glitter

I think they might be crocheted or knitted? Just in a different pattern than the sweaters?

budpowellfan

You might be right?

mrflippant

I'm Ron Burgundy?

[deleted]

Go Fuck Yourself San Diego

Angelsfan14

They look like my cats scratching post to be honest.

paintwithice

Their knit pants are under their sweaters pulled up high, that's why they are built like Lisa and Bart Simpson.

Di5traction5

They are knit in garter stitch! You can achieve this by knitting both sides of fabric if you are working flat or alternating knit and purl rounds if knitting circular. The fabric garter stitch makes is squishy and warm with squiggly horizontal lines. Stockinette stitch is what is commonly thought of pertaining to knit garments and instead of the lines you will see the stitches resemble a “v”

Chockzilla

This person knits

Di5traction5

It’s true! Haha

theemmyk

And the knitted outfit includes spats, which go over their shoes for warmth! I’ve seen stuff like this in old Christmas cards.

butteryflame

Also why are their stomachs so big? Just the way the clothes were made?

Nasracky

butteryflame

I wanna go to Belgium

hannabarberaisawhore

I went there once. Walked right into a sign post along the street in Ypres while staring at clothes in a shop window.

PMmePMsofyourPMs

> clothes in a shop window You can just say it, it was a hot mannequin, right?

Sacred_thorn_apple

That was you?!

glennert

Yeah, Belgium does that to people

PM_meyourGradyWhite

Or horses.

jewellamb

I dunno, but I’m in the same boat and I need this outfit. Extra points for the spats and the mock-scarf. Definitely old-school cool

Grimalkinnn

It looks like their thick sweaters are tucked into their pants. Maybe to keep snow out?

Juan_Carlo

Yeah. It's not that they're fat, they look pregnant.

tech_possum

I mean no offense by this comment. Usually when kids have swollen bellies it is due to malnutrition. This doesn't neccesarily mean that they didn't have enough to eat. Maybe they ate the same group of food everyday. They were probably lacking some vital nutrients in their food hence the swollen belly. Growing up in a country with a lot of refugees, the relief food wasn't very nutritious but did relieve the hunger problem. Kids looked like this.

vergilbg

Thought they dressed up to resemble sheep or smth.

Acousticittotheman

Why do those cat scratch towers have heads?

sticks14

The Michelin Man's children.

GumpTheChump

There's a lot going on here and I love every fancy bit of it.

BlueMonkOne

"Don't teekle me, I'm full off shocalote!"

So_Do_You_Like_Stuff

Oh relax kids, I've got a gut feeling Uter's around here somewhere. After all, isn't there a little Uter in all of us?

chronoboy1985

In fact you could say we just ate uter, and he’s in our stomachs right now! Hahahaha!

Have an upvote for knowing the Michelin Man's real name.

TikTokTikhon

Not for much longer after this shot, I'll bet. Idk about how it was further south but my Oma's family across the border in Gelderland did not fare well. Lots of famine during the war.

Talquin

Was going to comment the same thing. 3 years from when this photo was taken…. They would have a very different outlook. Rationing and the war will change people

retirementdreams

These two looked prepared.

DEEP_SEA_MAX

I'm not fat, I'm prepping for WWIII

Salt_Possibility4488

What is a goose suit for?

pippyLONGsocking

**It's an old circus term.**

Silveeto

To say it politely, yet backhandedly, those are some very… *prosperous* looking children.

create360

Ok. This is cool and cute and all that other stuff, but what’s up with their bellies? Is that just layers of knitting or are they built that way?

Clockwork_Medic

Belgians are just built different ❤️

mrstipez

They're from the **Land of Chocolate**

loganrunjack

Wow chocolate half price!

doctor-rumack

I'm sorry, we were talking about chocolate?

As a Swiss, I felt triggered. Belgium chocolate is super good though. But their masterpiece is SPECULOOS, the most addicting thing ever (to me, at least!)

Why tho

dinah_moe_humm

It is the caricature of a Belgian - at least in the mid 1900s. Times have changed, thankfully.

TulsaBasterd

Waffles

HeavyFuckingMetalx

The Belgian kind

OrangeSode

I read something a while back about their(kids) organs growing bigger than their current bodies which is how a lot of kids look like that before puberty. Edit: upon further Googling it seems because they haven’t fully developed abdominal muscles yet, or they constipated, or they fatties.

Five_Decades

I'm not fat, I'm constipated.

69tendo

I’m not fat, just got big poo poos

ambivigilante

Just you wait, one of these days I’m gong to shit and I’ll be thin again. I swear it!

ALoafOfBread

I'm not fat, I'm full of shit

true_gunman

I'm not fat, I'm big-organed!

Woodwonk

I think these are home-made snowsuits, so probably a bit of extra padding around a roundish belly.

toeytoes

My first thought was a hot water bottle under the sweaters

Koeienvanger

Belgian Beer Bellies™

GoddamnFred

It was an old tactic to make them less attractive to the priests. Fatten them up.

wahnsin

unfortunately, this also made them much easier to catch

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

And there was a lot more to love

Bk_nor_bk

Between the world wars and before it was seen as a symbol being healthy and wealth (think). My grandmother was sent to a "fat camp" not to loose weight but to gain.

hami12

They do love their chocolate

TheCyanKnight

That's from all the abbey beer and cheese

Axolotlist

Probably the mayonnaise on their fries.

Kangar

It appears that your mother and brother were crocheted!

BG_1952

Someone (could be mom, could be grandma, could be grandpa) took a lot of time to carefully knit those outfits. The needlework is outstanding. Your mom and uncle were loved.

alleecmo

That's what I was thinking about, all the time & love that went into not just the knitting, but possibly the spinning & other wool processing, which may have still been done by hand in many areas.

aligpnw

I see where they got the idea for those Snowbabies ornaments now. So cute.

blueper06

Fun fact- the original show babies faces were modeled after the creator’s daughters that I grew up with. Whenever I see an older snow baby I can identify which girl it is. ETA the originals of the modern line. If it’s a proper antique then no i don’t know the faces.

JBits001

I looked this up as I collect snow babies but never knew their origin (we used it as a wedding topper and since we got married the day after Xmas husband buys me a couple as a present each year), apparently they were created in the 1890’s by Johann Moll so are you pushing 130 this year? > Johann Moll Snow Babies were created as reusable cake toppers in the 1890s by Johann Moll, a German confectioner, based on early nineteenth century sugar dolls used as Christmas decorations. They were originally manufactured by Hertwig and Company, but other porcelain factories in Germany began creating the figurines soon after.

blueper06

I am not a snow baby collector, so let me rephrase by saying the originals of the modern line.

aligpnw

That's awesome.

Ognius

I knew these lol chonkers looked familiar but I couldn’t put my finger on it. SNOWBABIES!

mandiexile

Old school warm telling by the comfy sweaters they’re wearing.

jimmi1

Hey have no idea on the shit storm they are about to endure

VacuouslyUntrue

Maybe neither do we.

jimmi1

Very true

Satoriinoregon

Gosh dang adorable!

iheartmagic

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low-grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen-year-old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard, really. At the age of twelve, I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I suggest you try it.

theoriginalhazelbrew

I should have told you the truth earlier, but those Belgians, they made you so damn…evil. And of course, they share a border with the Dutch.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

lirparox

Makes total sense. Thank you!

Mose_Schrute_Esq

I always wondered how the hell Mike Myers et al wrote this little backstory. It is deranged in content yet so articulate and specific, I wonder if it’s based on something else. That guy was/is a comedic genius; they should have made 10 more of those films.

beetlejuuce

It reads like a parody of nineteenth and early twentieth century literature about the European upper classes. Absurd but somehow "cultured"

IAMAHobbitAMA

They should make another one where Austin Powers is being forced out of retirement!

SoftUnlucky2100

Treasure it and pass to future generations Peace love and happiness always

mykylodge

There was a lot of knitting going on back then I assume. Only joking, lovely picture.

Snoo-85401

More like old school adorable. 🙂 And I love the stylish knitwear with that offcenter strip in a different pattern that matches the turtleneck pattern. Love your moms beanie too.

dlini

Old school… wool! 🐑🐑🐑

Apeckofpickledpeen

This is so precious. What cute kids! I would try to take it to get colorized bc I wanna see what color the outfits are!

penischamp

Do they discover the colors or are they digitally painting them? I’ve always assumed the latter.

SmittenMo

They digitally paint them. While skilled photo colorists do need to understand light sources and its effect on color perception to produce accurate tints, tones, and shades, the actual color choices come from historical research.

Kahless01

the shit those poor kids are about to experience.

Ripster7

Nah dawg, that's old school warm, y'all snuggled up like a bug in a rug

Beautiful. Nothing more or less. But referring to this picture he also whispered :”please eat all the buns, go forth and eat, get strong” Nothing to take away from the story or the picture. Both wholesome. A joke😊

PinkRosePie

Kids don't make any damn sense. How are u 3yrs old and that big??? Its like now that I'm an adult, I've lost the ability to tell what size a child is supposed to be at their age.

monarch1733

Nah, these are especially big kids. There’s not much to go on for scale but it’s not just the bulk of the sweaters, all parts of their bodies are carrying extra weight. These particular kids were eating well and not moving around much.

redquailer

Adorable children. Love her curls and those sweaters are beautiful! Love the detail of the vertical ‘stripe’. And the tummies 😂 cute

k2aries

That is very cool. Amazing pic!

rezin44

And bitchin threads! My mom knitted my brother and I vests and hats every year for school back in the 70s.

Imjustnotfunny

What became of them in later life?

Joseluki

Old school wool.

madeathrowaway21

I absolutely love and adore this picture.

Feels like old-timey Willy Wonka . . . .

I want pants like those.

Mizzou1976

Athleisure wear is a relatively recent addition to the human wardrobe.

If this isn't the coolest thing I've ever seen, I don't want to be alive

Their little leggings and shoes make them look like little goats it’s SO CUTE I LOVE IT

Skicliffs

Your mom reminds me of Christina Ricci

madeyemary

Omg your mom looked like a baby doll. What a face

mikePTH

This picture makes me want to cry. They are so sweet and innocent, and so clearly loved and cared for, and here comes shitty little people making huge shitty wars to ruin all the goodness in the world because it might be good for their careers. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. FUCK.

smooth_chicken

Never has Austin Powers felt so real.

truzno1

Gramma made these outfits, and you both, will wear them proud, for a picture, so I can send it to her...

FreeClownFarts
