Imagine if Sunny's mom left the stable food in the storage room... You know, the one that "doesn't exist" ![img](emote|t5_31hpy|2468)
*There is nothing here.*
But *something* is there, isn’t it?
here we go again
It was a challenge; Sunny was actually supposed to hunt and forage for food as if he were in the wild. The steak was just a starter.
There probably is shelf stable food in the house's cupboards but Sunny seems to usually be in the mindset of "go to sleep as soon as possible" to even consider checking and even if he does know I doubt he knows how to use a can opener since he's been living in a childish fantasy world in his brain for 4 years. He doesn't even know what lemons are actually called.
His mom still trusted him with chores so making a can of anything would still be in the realm of reasonableness
I see Nern, I upvote
Oh hello there! My name is Nern. I'm considered the greatest historian of our time... I've gathered a wealth of knowledge about Olathe and what happened here. Many tales... Would you like to hear? Hmm... I wish you were more enthusiastic... Oh well, I'll tell you anyway. Let's see.... Oh right! It all started with what I like to call, THE FLASH. I was sitting with my wife, god rest her soul, sipping on sweet lemon tea. I believe it was homemade by my sweet wife, God rest her soul. Or wait... Maybe she bought it from the store in a bottle. You know, like a plastic bottle? Well hold on now, that would be ridiculous to buy a bottle of sweet lemon tea, then transfer the contents into a glass. Why not just drink it from the bottle? I guess maybe so she could put ice in the glass? But then again, making tea homemade would be just as time consuming, if not more! That sneaky bitch... Anyway, I'll save that story for later! So, I'm sitting on my porch drinking sweet lemon tea. From a glass of course, ho ho! When suddenly... A great strangeness fills my body... Something was wrong... I've lived many years, and I've never felt something like this before. Do you know what it was? Yup! It was my rocking chair! That wooden son of a gun stopped rocking! So I looked down and realized a little rock had gotten caught beneath my chair! A rock under my rocking chair! What a day! I decided it was time for bed, I had had a little bit too much excitement for one day! Hoho! I slid into my jammies, brushed my teeth, and said my prayers. As I was climbing into bed I noticed my wife, God rest her soul, brushing her hair in the bathroom. As I peered across the hall my body swelled up with emotion...
"Why can't I be married to an attractive woman?"
"Is it me?"
"My bank account?"
I'm a tall guy, I workout forty minutes a week... Is that not enough? Now my neighbor at the time, Tom Forknight, was very short. His wife, Karen Forknight-Plateburger... Yeah, one of THOSE women. Well, she was more attractive than my wife. I'd say she was a soft six, whereas my wife was a hard four. What's the deal? I thought women liked tall men? Why was Karen with him? Anyway my horse of a wife, God rest her soul, crawled into bed next to me. She decided to leave the bedside light on so she could read her book. It was one of her romance novels again... Give me a break... As if I don't already feel inadequate enough... Not only do I have to compete with Tom, now I have to deal with these fictional hunks! Ay yai yai! At this point I had already suppressed the urges of intimacy, I rolled over and tried to sleep. Her bedside light was only of minor annoyance. I was able to drift off... Then I woke up to a big flash of light. That's about it.
I can tell by the way you're walking away that you don't want to leave...
If you really want to hear another story I'll tell you.
Once upon a hot summer night. Sometime in July... Was it July? My local grocery store sells really good eggs in July. I don't know why. Do chickens operate better in heat? Fireworks maybe? I don't know. I don't want to get off topic. Point is, the eggs that Summer were marvelous! Anyway, my wife and I, God rest her soul, went to a BBQ that night. It was held at Dale Spooner's house.
Well, his backyard... Conny Spooner doesn't want people in her home, I think she's just an uptight bitch. So at this BBQ I see none other than... That's right, Tom Forknight... Now earlier in the day wife, God rest her soul, had made potato salad for the BBQ. Personally I hate potato salad, I'm a mashed kind of fellow. Hoho! So I sat in the TV room avoiding her till the BBQ. Once we were at the party, I made sure to distance myself from my dumb potato bitch wife. God rest her soul, I just didn't want anyone to think I would associate with someone that would bring a potato salad! Anyway, Tom and his above mediocre wife were already there. And get this, they brought a fruit salad! With whipped cream! The nerve of those Forknights! Needless to say I gave my wife, God rest her soul, a couple choice words About whipped cream! Versus potato salad! God dammit! Son of a bitch! A real tongue lashing!
Geez, you're kind of smothering me. I'll talk to you later.
What the hell is a lemon
Did sunny eat the food? Did his mom call to make sure he ate food?
Should she pre-chew and spoonfeed it to him too?
Mf you realize this is a depressed, suicidal 16 year old? Sunny could literally get too depressed to eat and will literally starve himself even more without someone actually caring for him because he just doesn't feel like he wants to eat.
As someone who has grappled with serious depression and been on the edge multiple times: You are describing a fucking baby. Sunny's own cocktail of mental issues does not leave him physically or mentally unable to engage with his basic needs most of the time (at least from what we have seen). We literally see him fight through his psychosis because he was hungry, nor does him refusing to eat come up in the story.
I don't think Sunny's mom is perfect but I am sick of people like you infantilizing these issues into a simple black and white. News flash: life doesn't normally magically move around to perfectly accommodate people with these issues or the people who want to help them. Sometimes there are messy loose ends where implying that because someone is depressed they require what amounts to a live-in servant and that that is a reasonable thing to think should happen is patently ridiculous!
I know multiple people, including me, who have literally not eaten because they were too depressed to,and just stayed in bed instead, didn't fucking bother, and just said to themselves "so I'll starve, so what". I'm glad you never had to deal with starving yourself because you didn't feel like bothering with eating, but it's not that fucking uncommon. Not to mention I didn't say she needs to be there 24/7, she literally just needs to ask if he ate to make sure he isn't starving himself because he doesn't care enough. I mean he is clearly incredibly malnourished already so I can only imagine he doesn't actually feed himself correctly most of the time. If her solution to him not feeding himself correctly is to just let him starve because life doesn't go around him, I'd say she's a bad mother
Yeah, id say its pretty likely, especially since we already have another character who was confirmed to stop taking care of himself (including eating) for almost a year due to depression. Double especially since eats almost nothing durning the game (only a steak which he vomits out in hikkikomori route, and in the normal one he eats only cuz he was invited for dinner or something similar)
He vomits the steak in the Sunny route as well
Yeah i didnt repeat that cuz i wanted to focus on the fact he eats other stuff too, thanks for he comment tho
If a kid ignores his starvation he will ignore his moms pre recorded voice too. Remember that sunnys mom is doing everything she cam for him. She is trying to move out and start a new life for sunny, working and living all alone to take care of sunny and even though she knew sunny >!killed mari!< she never hated sunny for it and always supported him. You throw all these to trash and say that she is a bad mother because she didnt pre record her voice that says "did you eat your meal?". Doesnt make sense at all
She could legitimately call to him instead of just leaving voice messages. Sunny could have killed himself on the first day and she wouldn't have known, she'd just keep sending recorded messages. She's not terrible, she is trying her best, but going on a furniture sale and not trying to call sunny while he's awake once? Making sure he's eating? Making sure he's even alive?
Do you not know how voice mail works?
I am pretty sure somewhere in game says that sunny never opens his moms calls but I am not sure.
Even if she did, Sunny could have just lied
Doesn't matter, she didn't even try to care, lied or not is a different issue
He is 16 so she would propably expect him to at least eat properly.
That would be true, if he actually cared about staying alive
What makes you think so? She knew that Sunny came out of his house, so she trusted that his friends could help him while she was busy
She didn't know that first of all. I looked through all the dialogue and she didn't know, in the hikikomori route he goes without eating for 3 whole days
What I did find is that she did actually ask if he ate well, but she hasn't actually talked to him, she just left him a voice message. She asked if he can take care of himself cause he's a "big boy" which is like... Hopeful I guess, but he literally couldn't take care of himself for those 3 days so it really seems like she's out of touch with Sunny's situation
She probably didn't know what happened four years before, of course she wouldn't understand him.
There are multiple reasons and hints pointing that she did know, and even still she could see his situation is pretty grim
Hold up, why am i defending her!? I forgot that she still left him alone without electricity.
Ok, you may be exaggerating a little, but you're right, she's doing her best, but is terrible at doing it
She actually only left him without lights but ye, it's pretty bad. She might be doing her best but it's just... Not really enough
why is being left a steak bad? I only have fries from the burger joint down the road for dinner and I'd kill for a steak snack
People think that the steak is the *only* thing his mom left for him to eat.
Because it’s all we’re shown? Cupboard stuff was never shown therefore of course everyone assumes that’s all there was to eat.
Amigo you defend Sunny’s mom far too much. Maybe she has good intentions and loves her son but that doesn’t mean she’s good. You can’t just go off your own speculation to defend some of her actions. A mother with good intentions ≠ a good mother
Also considering “oops i forgot to tell the electrical company we’d need a few more days, guess the house is gonna be without power, sorry lol”
She only left him without lights, not all electricity. He doesn’t really need lights to maintain his basic needs.
Well, after you eat the steak trying to interact with the fridge says that it's empty. I see your point there mightve been cupboard stuff but we're never shown it in the game and Sunny never eats anything else so it's implied there's nothing.
Also it's worth noting that Sunny focuses on food a lot in his daydreams - many characters are based on food, like Sweetheart and many NPCs, the entire orange oasis, the steak itself appears in one very important area. I don't know if it's intentional, but when you're hungry you tend to think about food a lot more so it's interesting if it is.
I constantly think about food
It's not implied in the sense that it is a conclusion that Omocat wants you to reach via supposition. The overall narrative of the game is not written in a way that makes sunny's mom out to be an abusive parent in the way it does with Aubrey's mom. Sunny leaving town to live with his mother in the city is framed as an overall good thing, not something that someone who purposefully wrote her as abusive would probably do.
I am taking all the Sunny mom haters to [this post](http://aminoapps.com/p/fhxalk)
Amino has that thing where it won’t let you read the whole thing
I will copy and paste the entire thing then.
"This was originally posted on reddit, but I thought I should share here as well. It was made in response to my parent tier list and the hate I have gotten on it.
Anyways, I see Sunny's mom as a good mom, so I decided to go on a whole rant on why I believe this. We all see things differently and this is not me telling you that you are wrong. We are all people who sees things differently, even if we are behind a screen. Keep this in mind before commenting anything.
The most common thing I see when people talk about Sunny's mom is about the fridge. When Sunny opens the fridge and eats the steak, the game points out that it is now empty. People tend to use this as evidence of Sunny being neglected. However, when moving houses, which is what Sunny is doing, it is common sense to remove all the food in the fridge. Unless you want to make a mess, it is a good idea to take everything out. Plus it isn't like his mom left him with nothing to eat at all, a note in Sunny's room written by his mom mentions that she left Sunny a steak in the fridge, which Sunny ate. If you look at your menu, Sunny has 30 dollars, meaning even if he hated the steak, he could have bought pizza from Gino's or if it is the hikikomori route, then he could have ordered in a call.
Speaking of Sunny, many people ask why haven't she put Sunny in therapy, after all Mari "committed suicide", so why isn't he? This is because the game is set between the 1990s-2000s, ignoring the stigma, therapy at that time was extremely expensive. Unless you are extremely rich and want to get therapy, it would be almost impossible to get therapy. It is accessible now, so what changed? In 2014, President Obama passed an Act which allowed people to be able to afford Healthcare, therapy was included. Sunny's mother would not be able to afford Sunny proper therapy at all. Sunny not going to therapy does not mean she does not care for him.
Sunny's mom cares for Sunny and wants his happiness. In her calls, she tells Sunny that "a change of scenery will be positive for the both of us", she says "us" indicating that she isn't focusing on herself on the move, she is focusing on both of them. She wants Sunny to feel better as seen with the word "positive" showing that she wants Sunny to be happy. Later she tells Sunny "I hope you're pacing your chores... I don't think even I could finish everything in one day!" She uses herself as an example to show Sunny that it is okay to not do all of the tasks at once. It also could be her making sure Sunny doesn't overwork himself, or harm himself by exhaustion from all of the work done. Even in her sticky note about the steak, she points out that it is his favorite. If she did not care for Sunny, then she would not do any of these things whatsoever. Especially moving houses for his sake, the amount of money and effort needed is a lot, yet she still does it to get him to be happy.
Honestly, my favorite trait about Sunny's mom is that she knows when she messes up and takes full responsibility. On the first night, she mentions that she forgot to tell the electric company that she needs more time for the move, so the lights stopped working early on. When she realizes she did that she tells Sunny this "Also, sorry! MOMMY messed up! I forgot to tell the electric company that we need a few extra days before we're ready to move, so the lights might cut out sometime tonight." She first apologises to Sunny, admitting she messed up, and explains what she did wrong to him. She doesn't even ask him to forgive her at all. She knows that Sunny should be angry at her, so she does not even bother.
Now let's go on with the contradictions it will have if Sunny's mom is abusive/neglectful/does not care about Sunny. When we enter Basil's memories to find out the truth, we get a small cutscene with the mom where she says "My only daughter... is gone. And you... you are my only son. I can't... lose you as well." the word "can't" clearly shows that Sunny's mom is unable to let Sunny leave her like Mari did, she is unable to lose Sunny at all. That word choice would be strange to use if she doesn't care about Sunny at all. Another thing to point out is that Sunny subconsciously sees his mother as overprotective of him, in headspace we see a [Statue of his mother|https://youtu.be/X3pOndwP-ow] . No matter where Sunny turns, she is always watching him, making sure he doesn't leave her sight. That is until he goes behind her, then her face distorts. There is 2 implications for the face thing, one could be her hiding her pain from Sunny (who sees it anyways) or Sunny believes the second he leaves her she will fall apart. Both implications show her care for Sunny, the first one she hides her pain for Sunny's sake to let him be happy and relax and in the second she is unable to handle the thought of Sunny dying or leaving her in any way.
Malnourishment is a big thing the fandom points Sunny's mom at, however there is no evidence in the game that Sunny is malnourished at all. People can be short, that is a thing. Sunny looked tall when he was young, so what is it to say he didn't hit puberty early? It is common for early bloomers to be short after all. Another thing is, the only indicator we get of it is coming from Kel's mom, who is implied to be Mexican with the ofrenda in the house. Speaking from experience, but Mexican parents say that regardless if you put on or lost weight from when you last visited them. It isn't shocking that she calls Sunny skinny.
Lastly, Sunny is 16. He is almost an adult now, so why are we treating him like he is 5? He is able to handle himself and make his own decisions at this point. We can't just pretend that everything Sunny does and does not do is his mom's fault. Sunny's mom cannot spend her time watching Sunny 24/7 and hold his hand all the time either."
There isn't a designated pantry or cupboard anywhere in the kitchen, or anywhere you could reasonably store shelf-stable food without probably grouping it alongside cleaning supplies (which has a chance of contaminating the food), since the only cabinets available are under the sink.
Where exactly would Sunny find shelf-stable food if they even have it in the house?
either storage rooms or in those cabinets, or maybe in a box somewhere in the house
I say the little shit doesn't deserve any more frozen or fresh meat after what he did to that steak.
I know >!killing Mari!< was bad, but what he did was the food equivalent of a warcrime
