- The Whole Nine Yards (2000) is light but fun.
- Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) is just brilliant.
- Thank You For Smoking (2005) is outstanding, smart satire.
i like all 3 of these!
TYFS is a movie that gets unfairly slept on. That movie is amazing.
Death at a funeral 2007
Underrated and never shown enough
It’s great because the same plot twist character plays in both the English and American version!
Right? I absolutely love them both and thought it was so cool that they got to reprise their role.
The American version of truly Tracy Morgan’s best work 😂 but yes both are so great
The In-Laws (1979)
The Nice Guys
Good Morning, Vietnam
My Cousin Vinny
The Truman Show
Stranger Than Fiction
Great list - I really expected Game Night to be stupid, but it was actually really clever
Jessie Plemons is hilarious in this. Such a small role, but he stole every scene he was in.
He makes the movie imo
Game Night is a great suggestion for this inquiry.
yep. Jon Hamm was hysterical.
The In-Laws (1979) is one of my favorites of all time!
The In-Laws is my Dad's favorite movie. None of my friends have seen or heard of it. Glad to see it getting some recognition ( Also Midnight Run is one of my Mom's favorite movies, but it does get appropriate praise)
Truman Show is just so rewatchable tor sum reason. If anyone knows why please share
I second Midnight Run
Game Night is one of my favourites! Thanks for the reccs
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Boy officer, we have had a doozy of a day
Watch anything by Christopher Guest. The humor is often dry and subtle but very very funny.
-This is Spinal Tap
-Best in show
-A Mighty Wind
Waiting for Guffman.
Awesome. I remember seeing this in an old theater in Boston. I've never laughed so hard.
"Bastard people" killed me.
Was it the Brattle?
Not Brattle, cool place though. I can't recall the name but IIRC it was in Waltham (I was living in Watertown at the time). The place had stadium style seating with old red velour seats. Definitely an old theater, but that made it really cool. Mid-late 1990s.
I know the place you're talking about. Saw Hedwig there in the early 2000's. Can't remember the name tho
It’s the day of the show, y’all.
A penny for your thoughts
“There’ll always be a place for me at the Dairy Queen”
The Princess Bride, too. As the Six Fingered Man!
Guest is a comedic genius
He really is. The ability to turn the mundane into hilarity is absolute genius.
Where’s Busy Bee??!!
I said this too. You have great taste!
We can talk and not talk and still find things to not talk about.
"Honey, you're wasting your gum."
How about Gene Hackman towards the end? “Don’t leave me. I don’t want to be the only girl not dancing.”
A Fish Called Wanda (1988, UK/USA)
22 Jump Street (2014, USA, yes really)
Stripes (1981, USA)
Raising Arizona (1982, USA)
This is Spinal Tap (1984, USA)
What about “21 Jump Street?”
21 is really funny, but i was shocked at how much i laughed during 22.
Dumb but still very funny.
Planes Trains and Automobiles
A Fish Called Wanda is just sublime. Kevin Kline walked away with that movie!
Oh no! K-k-k-ken's going to k-k-k-kill me!
He's amazing! The exchange with Wendy makes me shake with laughter.
Otto: Don't call me stupid.
Wendy : Why on earth not?
Otto : Oh, you English are *so* superior, aren't you? Well, would you like to know what you'd be without us, the good ol' U.S. of A. to protect you? I'll tell you. The smallest fucking province in the Russian Empire, that's what! So don't call me stupid, lady. Just thank me.
Wendy : Well, *thank* you for popping in and protecting us.
Otto : If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking *German!* Singing "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles..."
Wendy's line right before that always cracks me up: "My father was in the secret service, Mr. Manfrdjedsinjin..."
Wendy is such a snob and I loved every minute of her!
"oh do shut up, Portia" 😂
This needs to be much higher. Office Space is elite non-dumb comedy
I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it, Bob.
The undisputed heavyweight world champion.
The Big Lebowski.
Yeah, well, you know, that’s just like uh, your opinion man.
"This aggression will not stand, man."
“Oh shit I’m sorry dude.”
"I can't be worrying about that shit. Life goes on, man."
Well, like, that's just your opinion man
OVER THE LINE!
"It really tied the room together."
Donny you’re out of your element!
Oh God yes, Coen bros. I loved Burn After Reading and Fargo.
Don't forget Oh Brother Where Art Thou and Raising Arizona
easy man, theres a beverage here!
"Obviously you're not a golfer."
This is the answer!
I’ll go with a few horror comedies done well:
- Tucker and Dale vs Evil
- What We Do in the Shadows
- You’re Next
The royal tenenbaums
Decided to go with this one for tonight’s movie based off the trailer, thanks!
If you end up liking this check out life aquatic with Steve zissou (same director)
Bro they might aswell check out Wes entire film discography
Life Aquatic is in my top 3, for sure. Love the writing, love the sets, love the music, love the actors/performances.
Life Aquatic is one of my favorites of Wes Anderson as well it just has this intriguing charm Wes really can form a great artistic world.
Check out The Life Aquatic, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Don’t sleep on Moonrise Kingdom.
Np, hope you like it!
Tell us what you think! It’s one of my favs.
The whole >!suicide!< plot really got to me, don't think I'd remember the film as fondly as I do if it didn't include that.
The Death of Stalin
Or even better, the series The Thick of It. Don't know how it translates to someone not from the UK, but it is brutal, scarily accurate satire
If you like The Death of Stalin you probably will like JoJo Rabbit.
This is what I came here to say. Hilarious and smart is a great combo
Burn After Reading (2008) Clooney, Pitt, Malcovich, and Frances McDormand.
The Nice Guys
Haven’t seen the first one but The Nice Guys is great
"In Bruges" is just elite. It goes so smoothly, you won't even notice it.
It's a rare dramatic comedy too.
Everyone forgets the drama
The purgatory theme is also *chefs kiss*
Oof. One prominent element of the drama, I could do without. I mean, it’s necessary to the plot, but it’s the reason I don’t want to watch it again, good as it is.
Ryan Gosling's pain scream alone makes it worth the watch.
in bruges is one of my favorite movies. dark comedy at its best. i’m always trying to get my friends to watch it
“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” as well.
Oh, it's truwe, it's truwe!
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Snatch. Idiocracy. O Brother, Where Art Thou? Rat Race. Anything Monty Python. Fantastic Fear of Everything, any comedy by or with Simon Pegg.
Great list! To add to that I would recommend Shaun of the Dead as well. One of the funniest films I’ve ever seen.
Death to Smoochy
Death to Smoochy is one of my favorite dark comedies; I will never understand why it gets so much hate (e.g. 42% on rotten tomatoes). Robin Williams is just insanely believable as an evil, unhinged children's TV show host.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. That one really surprised me! And The Darjeeling Limited. I really like those movies where every scene and every character stands out and it's difficult to say why the h..
This and that is so funny but it is!
Oh, and I also love Trading Places, to death, but that's another story quite.
Wag the Dog
The Grand Budapest Hotel
I watched this for the first time about a month ago, had no idea what to expect and wow. One of my new favorite movies, it’s so, so good.
Solid pick, just recently rewatched
- Straight Up (2019)
- Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019)
- Game Night (2018)
- The Nice Guys (2016)
- The Guard (2011)
- Submarine (2010)
- Four Lions (2010)
- In the Loop (2009)
- Election (1999)
Election is maybe the greatest comedy of ever made. Whip sharp screenplay
+10 for four lions OP
Four Lions is great! I never hear anyone talk about it..
I was coming to say In The Loop. Ianucci films are some of the sharpest and funniest.
The Thick of It is superior though
I adore this movie. So smart. So hilarious.
My First Mister
Dr. Strangelove. A comedy about nuclear war and the ruin of the world.
Little Miss Sunshine
Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel.
Arsenic and Old Lace. About some sweet little old ladies who happen to be serial killers.
If you’re willing to consider horror/comedy, there’s Ginger Snaps. It’s horror/comedy/tragedy that takes character development seriously.
Seconding Arsenic and Old Lace! The only thing holding it back from perfection is that the Broadway producers wouldn’t let them have Boris.
Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
Eastbound and Down.
It’s Macbeth in a 1970’s fast food restaurant. With Christopher Walker!
We watched this in HS English after reading Macbeth. Great flick
The Odd Couple
My Cousin Vinny
The Full Monty
What’s Up, Doc?
This is Spinal Tap
The Sure Thing
When Harry Met Sally
How has nobody mentioned Monty Python and the holy grail?
It's one of those great classics.
Anything Monty Python or Mel Brooks are worth a watch.
Le Dîner de Cons, the French film from 1998 remade as the awful Dinner for Schmucks (don’t watch that). The original is laugh out loud funny.
Laughed out loud at the trailer, defo gona give this one a watch
I'll watch this as soon as I can, it sounds hilarious.
I really like the films by Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro. The first feature film they did was Delicatessen. After they stopped working together Jean-Pierre directed Amélie which got Oscar nominations, and won a bunch of international movie awards.
I really enjoyed the original, but the American remake is fantastic in its own right. It gets shit on a lot, but Carell was such a great idiot. Great performances from Jemaine Clement and David Walliams as well
the remake is awful? *hard* disagree. it's hilarious!
What We Do In The Shadows (I know the series is a little more known, but watch the movie!)
I can’t believe no one has said Superbad. Greatest comedy film of all time and no, it’s not stupid comedy. It’s genuine, real comedy. Don’t care, watch it.
Other good ones:
10 Things I Hate About You (romcom)
About Time (romcom)
Singin in the Rain
40 year old virgin
Booksmart (basically Superbad with girls)
Bernie is one of my all-time favorites. Directed by Richard Linklater. Stars Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine, based on the true story of a super-nice, pillar of the community kind of guy who cares for a cranky old lady until finally pushed to the limit.
King of Comedy is an older one, a hilarious classic. DeNiro plays a complete dork who pesters the hell out of his role model (Jerry Lewis). A young Sandra Bernhard is in it too.
Adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. Stars Nic Cage, Meryl Streep, Tilda Swinton, Chris Cooper. The less I say about this, the better. It's off-the-wall in the best way. If you like Being John Malkovich, you'll like this.
Have you seen Parasite? By now, seems like everyone has, but I'll add it here since it's also excellent.
Singin in the Rain
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
I recommend Can you ever forgive me and also Palm Springs
Yes, I came here to recommend Palm Springs! My favorite comedy that’s come out in recent years.
Crazy, Stupid, Love.
40 Year Old Virgin
This Is 40

A serious man 👍
The Whoopie Boys
Spies Like Us
Oh. My. Gosh.
I totally forgot about Sorority Boys! That movie is HYSTERICAL!! Michael Rosenbaum is amazing in that one.
Hot Rod (2007)
Old School (2003)
Game Night (2018)
Free Guy (2021)
What we do in the shadow
- Scrubs (TV Show)
- This is Where I Leave You
- Forgetting Sarah Marshal
Just watched this tonight for like the fourth time.
Great movie but I listed it in my post already as a favourite 😄
Sorry. What did you end up watching?
Between Two Ferns
Crazy Stupid Love
Can't go wrong with Wild Tales from Argentina. [https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wild\_tales](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wild_tales)
I'm with you. I hate that adolescent crap. Try The Freshman, Hot Fuzz, Crazy Rich Asians or some of the screwball comedies from the thirties and forties like Bringing Up Baby or Arsenic and Old Lace.
Down Periscope (1996)
- Game Night (2018)
Evolution (2001) (ok it's kinda dumb sometimes but still funny)
If you enjoyed hot fuzz, I also suggest Shawn of the Dead and World's End to complete the blood cornetto trilogy.
Some Like It Hot is an oldie that always makes me laugh. Really any Billy Wilder comedy (any of his movies) is worth watching
Inherent Vise with Joaquin Phoenix is smart and surprisingly funny. It has the same vibes as big Lebowski but is its own deal. It's low key great. I think it's on HBO max. At least it was
Two of my recent favorites are
The Art of Self Defense
My cousin Vinny.
If you are willing to expand beyond movies, you can’t go wrong with the TV show *Frasier*.
Bubble Boy. Criminally underrated.. and the original trailer made it look like shit.
I would not class either “Borat” movie as a not-stupid comedy. There’s clearly thought and effort that goes into them both (even bad Baron Cohen productions have *that* going for them), but most of what they mine comedy from is very lowbrow by design.
Anyway, if you’re a fan of 1980s hair metal, I’d recommend “This Is Spinal Tap.”
* Sean Of The Dead (same director and lead actors as Hot Fuzz)
* Tucker And Dale Vs Evil
* Evil Dead 2
* Top Secret!
* The Naked Gun
* The Big Lebowski
* Oh Brother Where Art Thou
* The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs
Hunt for the wilderpeople, this is spinal tap, a mighty wind, best in show, the big lebowski, burn after reading, what we do in the shadows
Withnail and I
Bullet Train. Comedy action really, but more clever funny than stupid funny
Dr Strangelove. Being There.
Fleabag is excellent. Impeccable taste, Internet stranger.
Comedy films I've enjoyed: Clueless, Little Miss Sunshine (which is more a comedy-drama, but definitely funny), Grand Budapest Hotel, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang/The Nice Guys, The Princess Bride, Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, any of Edgar Wright's first 4-5 movies that you haven't seen (since you mentioned Hot Fuzz).
Many of these are a little bit hybrid with other genres, but then so are a few that you mentioned, so hopefully that would be fine
World End and Shaun of the dead
If you liked Hot Fozz, have you seen the rest of the Cornetto Trilogy? Shaun of the Dead and The World's End are both good.
What We Do In The Shadows
Shawn of the dead
Game night (highly recommend)
Game Night (2018)
This is gonna sound like a troll, but seriously, Senior Year on Netflix. The whole movie is extremely out of pocket with the humor. Everything funny that happens is really unexpected and makes you go "wtf??" But in a really funny way. Comedy is my least favorite cinematic genre, so when my bf asked if we could watch it, I was skeptical to say the least. By the end, I was almost in tears. Hope this helps!
Where the Crawdads Sing. Haven’t seen it but I bet it’d be pretty funny to hear a crawdad sing
some of my favorites off the top of my head (some are drama/comedy but oh well)
- in bruges
- big lebowski
- the truman show
- logan lucky
- shaun of the dead
- groundhog day
- palm springs
- 21 jump street
- royal tenembaums
- whip it
- miss congeniality (assuming you’ve seen it if you like legally blonde)
Everything everywhere all at once is silly, but it's not stupid, and it's absolutely hilarious and perfectly made.
I just rewatched Galaxy Quest. So good, so funny!!
In order of disappearance
The decline of the western civilisation
