Not so much ignored as it was treated as "are you a homosexual man who absolutely cannot stop fucking? No? Then you'll never get it" until about two weeks ago

The world absolutely ignored it, most part's still ignoring it. Just yesterday I was shouted down on r science for trying to explain someone that while they are correct to say this is not exactly an STI, it behaves very much like one, the distinction they are trying to make is meaningless, and currently sexual spread dominates with 95% of all cases. I understand we are trying to avoid the stigmatization of MSM people, but let's face: most public health authorities, tons of journalists, and even some average joes on social media were lying about the nature of the current outbreak. This is a step too far. It's fine, and is important to point out that characteristics or identities don't spread viruses: behaviors do. But it's not ok to kinda maybe hint at certain \*wink-wink\* behaviors without ever elaborating, and categorically denying that relevant behaviors might be more common in one community than in others. If you want some example this interview from the 5th of August would be a good read: [https://www.opb.org/article/2022/08/05/monkeypox-oregon-virus-hmpxv-vaccine/](https://www.opb.org/article/2022/08/05/monkeypox-oregon-virus-hmpxv-vaccine/) Dude literally did not mention sexual spread at all, lol. But my favourite part is this one: >At the same time, we know that anyone can be affected by hMPXV. And so we want to provide a level of awareness to those who may not be affected to quite the degree that gay and queer men who have sex with men are affected. And so at times we do feel caught between how we communicate to the general public and then how we have another channel of communication to folks most affected by hMPXV.

Yes, just two days ago I personally witnessed someone say something similar to what you just wrote, one of my customers: I and my father went to my customer's place for me to install a new PC I just built for him for his law office and to render other IT related services, and my father started a conversation with him, the conversation moved to the Monkeypox subject and immediately my customer told my father "If you are not gay you have nothing to worry about" referring to Monkeypox.

Well he is right at this point, it‘s still mainly something that is spreading within our (gay) community. Question is if it stays that way.
