Bg rock player here.
The deck is fun to play, but even funnier to play against.
>Bg rock player here. The deck is fun to play, but even funnier to play against.
i can feel your pain bro
I think people here did not see you asked for semi-casual.
If course BG rock is perfect for that. Not a tier 1 deck but it is fun to play and very able.
Rackdos scam has some similarities and is very very good. (Discard, value creatures, removal)
The rock and jund are okay but not that good right now.
A mono black deck was making waves a bit ago but fell off might be worth looking at
Bg rock shows up 5-0ing at league sometimes but that's it
Just go for RB Rock: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7y5noRykdc&t](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7y5noRykdc&t) . It's the cleanest and best iteration of old GBx/RBx you could find in Modern.
You need to dodge the 4c Omnath matchup or get lucky tho. And be very well prepared against Cascade decks. But the deck is a fine. A solid tier2.
I'll check this out, thank you!
Maybe it's not what you're looking for, but I play a semi budget version of BW smallpox.
Basically the deck it's all about discard, removal and efficient walkers. The "semi budget" is for the walkers, because people nowadays play mostly the stone forge mystic package.
The deck is super fun. It has super efficient removals (prismatic and vindicate), has the smallpox + flagstones trick and also a small lock with bridge + Kaya + Liliana's ults.
Not the best deck to full compete though, but the removals being able to hit permanents compensate the decks lack of fast clock like sfm or the elementals.
4 prismatic ending
2 inquisition of kozilek
2 collective brutality
1 night's whisper
4 liliana of the veil
2 kaya, orzhov usurper
1 Liliana, the last hope
3 gideon, ally of zendikar
4 lingering souls
1 ensnaring bridge
1 indatha triome
4 marsh flats
4 godless shrine
1 castle Locthwain
1 takenuma, abandoned mire
4 fetid heath
4 flagstones of trokair
2 shambling vent
1 concealed courtyard
I do not fully understand what the phrase semi-casual means. I had the opportunity to play many midrange rbx/bgx in the format and this is my personal ranking.
1. Rb Scam
3. Jund Scam (my own)
4. Rb midrange
5. Jund Saga/Bg Saga/Low Curve Jund with Recless Impulse (My own)
6. Jund DS
7. Boomer Jund
8. Boomer Rock
Playing with 2019 deck is not a good idea. Meta is different, power level is different. However, I believe that deckbuilding and customization are the most beautiful aspects of this archetype, so there is really a lot of space for your own ideas. I think that with a clearly defined metagame (I think semi-casual is a part of that) you can easily build The Rock, which will be roughly level 4 on my list. Which should be enough for semi casual play.
Any chance you have a link to the jund scam list? That sounds pretty awesome.
Sure, i will share but not today. Overall, I think Rb Scam is still stronger than my Jund Scam. Cool thing that i like is that you can pitch Riveteers charm to all elementals: endurance, grief and fury. Endurance is terribly strong in my locals. For this reason, such a weird choice. Haha
BG elvish reclaimer with Urza saga. And a suite of discards, ass trophy, pushes, tarmogoyf, bob, tireless tracker and dauthi.
Yeah check out electricbob on YouTube, he plays this deck and does well.
The abbreviated “assassin’s” in your comment isn’t something I’ve seen much, but I like it.
4c Omnath is the new Jund. It's a goodstuff pile like Jund used to be.
I'll check it out!
I know this is /r/modernmagic, but it may be worth considering RB midrange in Pioneer on power level and GB midrange if you really want to shock those overgrown tombs.
Pioneer just got LotV printed in and the archtype is very much a Jund them out strategy. If your LGS/area supports the format, might be worth a look.
It does! the FNM alternates between Pioneer and Modern :) I'll check it out!
Mh and mh2 kinda killed midrange archetypes. 4c omnath will outvalue any midrange.
Omnath is the new Jund.
"Midrange is dead bc there's a rly good midrange deck" ?
Midrange is dead because there’s a nonsense slow soup that slings free spells.
But ... RB Scam is a midrange deck, that uses free spells. Just say you don't like Omnath and move on pal
RB Scam is doing that thing, but it’s also more of a “lucky openers” deck. I actually like that deck.
4c doesn’t care much about card disadvantage because of the many ways it draws cards to the point that the ephemerate trick isn’t their main power play, the same doesn’t happen in scam that benefits a lot from the undying shenanigans.
Also, mana consistency is a thing, and 4c is consistent to a point that it can play moon effects.
Last but not least, RB scam isn’t creating non-games the way 4c does with Omnath’s lifegain and teferi.
Ah yeah because making the opponent discard 2-4 cards in the first 2 turns doesn't create non games. Sure buddy.
The thing is that 4c non games are more consistent than scam ones.
Scam needs really good openers, and the same debate has been made for griephemerate decks.
Simply griephemerate didn’t make it while scam is better because of T1 fury too and the undying mechanic which is better during combats.
Oh no, the best midrange cards are not black now! I guess midrange is dead because midrange=black
Just the facts.
But not /s of sarcasm, /s of salty Jund player wants his Modern back.
[Here's](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5051059#paper) a list that fairly recently 5-0'd on MTGO. Pretty old school list with an Elvish Reclaimer + Saga package thrown in.
Either play BG Rock or the way stronger option: Jund Saga. The deck recently got [[Soul of Windgrace]]. It grinds, it plays Tarmogoyf, and it can win! You even get to play the lovely [[Tireless Tracker]].

Question: Is it Modern, specifically, you're interested in?
Arguably the best deck in *Pioneer* right now is a BR Rock. Don't let the lack of green fool you, it's a classic Rock deck. In contrast, black Midrange is a distant second to 4 color (nonblack) in Modern, and Grixis Death's Shadow is probably better than Jund.
I ask because if you wanna play an old school BGx deck and crush with it, Pioneer definitely has that on offer. But if your LGS or friends do Modern and not Pioneer, that's no help.
