Best shells to support Upheaval

Best shells to support Upheaval

where i have seen upheaval at its best is in UG cube decks, you ramp to like nine mana, and then you can upheaval and redeploy your mana creatures immediately, and then you have a huge mana advantage and your opponent has to discard all their resources to hand size and its pretty trivial to win from there. that is where i would try and go with it, but i dont know how viable that strategy is in modern. like you said, upheaval is expensive and it seems horrible against prowess and other decks that can still function on one land.

Francis_Clampazzo

Vintage cube was the first play I saw it be game breaking as well. I've toyed around with the idea of mana dorks as a way to ramp and break the parity. I'm unsure how the deck bridges that gap between playing early mana acceleration and late upheaval, and if that midgame is survivable. Control and/or midrange spells might help but that also would dilute the power of post-upheaval plays

Rob_1089

im not sure either. you could maybe build it like a cube deck, have some midrange green payoffs along the curve and have upheaval as an i win button if the game goes long. i was also thinking you could maybe try and lean on fogs a little, but i am kind of skeptical of that.

Jump-InTheRiverStyx

If you haven't seen Saffron Olive's deck for upheaval yet you might consider it. It's green based ramp with BoP, [[Arbor elf]] and [[utopia sprawl]]. The deck usually wins by floating enough Mana to recast a strong green Planeswalker after upheaval. It also has some reasonably strong other ramp payoffs like [[primal command]] and [[primeval titan]]. https://youtu.be/9DxTbBNR90c Edit: a word

Francis_Clampazzo

This seems like a good starting point. A planeswalker post-upheaval seems like a good way to close the game quickly. I really like Nissa, but I wonder if Garuuk could be a different walker to help wrap things up fast

Jump-InTheRiverStyx

Or maybe a sticky, fast creature? [[Questing Beast]] comes to mind.

My guess is a deck using ursa's saga and urza high lord artificer. Talismans for ramp and then you go in one of two directions. Control - talismans will help ramp out crypyic command, and saga helps finish the game. Counterspell protects upheaval. Artifact ramp and prison - uses karn TGC, or maybe tezz in conjunction with low Mana lock cards (pithing needle and chalice of the void) and ensnaring bridge to survive until it can reset with upheaval. Another directionyou could try is artifact ramp with bloodmoon. The biggest advantage of this is being able to call your deck bloody heaving! I kid, but it could be reasonable. Bloodmoon can slow down opponents and red is a good color to answering low Mana cards that players get out before you moon them.

DeepStateKenyan

Karn post upheaval to find liquimetal coating isn’t a bad way to win

levetzki

Yeah that seems very mean

TKOS7

I’m doing this in UTron because you also get to put down Chalice to lock them out completely.

Francis_Clampazzo

I like the idea of artifact ramp as it chains into more ramp better than mana dorks. Urza seems like the best strategy to me as of right now since its ramp and a powerful post-upheaval threat that can keep ramping you back ahead. Blue Moon is another interesting idea. If Blood Moon is good enough to lock them out then I don't think the upheaval would be necessary, and if the Blood Moon is not good enough then I'm not sure that surviving long enough to upheaval is realistic. I really do like the idea of UR control though, so I'll be keeping my eye on MTGO results for some kind of control shell I could potentially slot it into

levetzki

I would try an artifact list but I don't want to buy karns and ursa's saga

TKOS7

I’m playing it in UTron. We’re playing talismans anyway because they make Thirst better and Upheaval into Karn fetching coating for next turn and Chalice on 1 is lights out.

electrius

Hey, slightly unrelated but I wanted to ask you so I dug up a comment of yours - do you play urza and saga in your build? I see some recent builds playing them so I'm considering it

TKOS7

Saga is great yes - play 1 or 2. Urza is ok and you can put thopter sword in the karnboard. Urza is amazing without tron as you’ll likely have double island, but with Tron he’s a bit naff. Tapping chalices for I is really solid though :)

georgemonty

I think a ramp/ fires of invention build could be good.

Broken_Emphasis

Outside of artifact decks, I'd argue that your best bet would actually be a UG ramp deck. One *super* cute interaction that you can aim for is hitting ten mana, then casting \[Upheaval\] followed by \[Journey to the Oracle\]. Alternatively... Upheaval with \[Warped Devotion\] out is *cruel*.

Rolopaolo17

Definitely Urza is the way to go. Play urza, have 10 mana on board, and then upheaval and recast urza with a bunch of cheap artifacts in hand and you definitely win that game.

jsckbcker

I'm thinking some mono blue tron decks that plays a lot of mana rocks. Tron and rocks should let you cast the upheaval on T4.

75percommander

My best bet would be U Tron. Turn 4 Tap out and float mana, cast Upheaval car Baby Karn, fetch Coating and then pass. Haven't exactly calculated through could be turn 5 but 4 should work. But you need to run 4 Talisman.
