Looking for a different deck to spice things up.

Looking for a different deck to spice things up.

hardhittaa

I know it gets a lot of hate but have you ever played Dredge before? It definitely plays differently than other decks, I’ve never played it myself but it could be fun! Or the new Affinity lists look like a blast to play, [[thought monitor]] is sweet. Maybe you don’t wanna buy Sagas though.

AwfulDonkey

Yeah I think I’m gonna skip on saga, but I’ve always been kinda interested in dredge. What are the pricy pieces and does it feel very linear to play?

hardhittaa

Yeah I would say it’s pretty linear. Didn’t take that into account when I recommended. Looks like the pricier cards are the lands and Life From the Loam.

AwfulDonkey

I might still consider it, I guess when I say linear I’m mostly asking how much you get to think when you play it. I don’t like decks like tron and burn that feel like the deck is just a program that does the same thing every time. Plus it does look really cool. Also I was planning to pick up Loam for midrange anyway, so that works out nicely

hardhittaa

So I’ve never played it personally but it looks pretty straightforward. I would guess most of the thought goes into trying to playing around different graveyard hate.

VoidZero52

It’s not terribly linear, there is a lot of decision making. It’s just that the first couple turns tend to look the same. After you’ve resolved a cathartic/discovery, or had a couple of turns of shriekhorn to get you off the ground, you have to start sequencing things correctly and deciding what to go for in terms of how much to dredge, whether to play apx or Conflagrate, when to just dog as deep as possible to try to hit creeping chill, how to maximize your boardstate by timing land drops and priority, etc. Also, sideboarding with dredge is a WHOLE task, that part is quite skill intensive. You need to know what hate pieces your opponent is likely to run, and you need to choose how much to bring in and how much to cut, and where to cut. God, I’m so uncomfortable sideboarding with dredge. But the deck definitely makes you think!

WeirdPumpkin

Yeah seconding this. Dredge is a deck that got a lot of crap when looting was around for being braindead, and admittedly looting did help a lot, but there's a ton of weird decisions to make in dredge and it's surprisingly easy to mess yourself up real bad

all_tapped_out

I've played dredge for a while now. It's definitely not as linear as you might think. Knowing when to mulligan is very important as is what's the best line of play when you have multiple things to do. Sideboarding can be difficult too.

AwfulDonkey

Do you think the deck is ever gonna get banned out of existence like grishoalbrand did? That’s one thing I worry about with a deck like dredge that I feel like people always complain about being a broken deck/mechanic

Rolopaolo17

No, dredge is a deck that works off of a critical mass of good shit, there’s no one piece that would ever realistically get banned that would make dredge unplayable.

all_tapped_out

It took a hard hit with the faithless looting ban but it has gotten some nice stuff since like creeping chill and ox. I don't think it will get banned out of existence. I'm more concerned about it not getting new cards or the gy hate getting better.

OhDee402

I think if they ban loam dredge would be in trouble but I dont think that's happening

yawnlikeseggs

Definitely not a linear deck, this however is the attitude that is often casted upon combo / combo’ish decks. Also, if you ever care to branch away from the meta you can add some pretty spicy cards to your dredge deck.

You may like the yawgmoth decks in black green. I've been rotating that and u/b inverter for the last few months and am still learning different angles and ways to win with the yawgmoth deck. The 4 decks I'm planning to have put together after mh2 released are: u/r phoenix, u/w grief blade, b/g yawgmoth, and u/b inverter. I'm not sure if you'd like more info on any of these but inverter and yawgmoth look like they may fit your style of play

AwfulDonkey

Unfortunately both just don’t seem to line up well for me. I don’t really wanna buy into a new manabase for U/B and while yawg is cool a buddy of mine already plays it and I’d just rather avoid playing all those mirror matches.

Quortonn

That is fair although the mirror is extremely complex and exciting. There is no plan, it is pure down to the trenches detailed interaction.

the_dystopian_snoman

Elves? It’s aggro tribal, but has a few lines of play, had gotten some toys recently, and gets out of control quick if it’s not answered.

jvalex18

Elves are in a shit place right now. Not worth the money spent.

SRLplay

well i spent 100€ on the whole deck and it's just for fun so... If the prices are rising again i am happy :P

FearLegend

You might be interested at looking this MH2 deck I brewed up it's midrange but can combo of with glimpse of tomorrow of cascade. Fpawlusz played a league with the deck so here's the youtube VOD: https://youtu.be/gZdodt5NHeg If you want to see how absurd it can get here are 2 timestamps: 1:03:30 1:21:00

AwfulDonkey

That’s a super cool list and it looks really fun, but I think adding another color of fetches and shocks to my collection would be pretty tough for me to do. Do you think it would work if you cut blue for black or white, and if so what would you get out of a different splash color?

FearLegend

Not really, the deck is already not that powerful and the best colors to do cascades are temur because of [[shardless agent]] and [[violent outburst]]. Also because of the pieces of interation that are [[brazen borrower]] and [[bonecrusher giant]]. You might want to look at other lists. I appreciate the enthusiasm :)

ToniCalzoni

If your only color restriction is not blue, you could try out new hollow one/vengevine variants with Asmor. Very graveyard centric like grishoalbrand and feels very combo-y by getting to cast a bunch of beefy or free threats pretty early. It is relatively linear, but you have some interaction with your opponent through lightning axe and Asmor's activated ability (and thoughtseize if you're in black). It's fun to spin the wheel and there are various different lines you can take to get some wild board states going.

Andreagreco99

I’m not sure if it’s in your tastes, but MH2 gave Enchantress a chance in Modern. It’s not top tier, but it’s definitely solid, in your colors (WG) with very cool interactions (for example, looping Solitary Confinement with Heliod while keeping drawing new cards your draw step through Enchantress effects). It plays like a prison deck with toolbox and ramp elements and it definitely need some thought to be played well.

Merfolkguy123

x3nodox

Twiddle storm! It's legit pretty consistent at going off T3-4, but it takes quite a bit of goldfishing to get a sense of the lines. Lots of fun though - also might play to your "splice to arcane" sensibilities 😜

AwfulDonkey

That sounds really cool, splice is one of my favorite mechanics. Do you have a list and is the mana base gonna be pricy? One thing I wanna avoid is buying into a full on blue manabase since I already have it for any nonblue deck

x3nodox

Here's a solid baseline list - https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4030030#online You do need a bunch of blue fetches, but I bet you could get away with as little as 1 watery grave, 1 steam vents. Most of the deck is dirt cheap though, so maybe that makes up for it, cost wise?

maplemagiciangirl

Myrchine gun is pretty fun Heartless summoning+ myr retriever + myr retriever + altar of the brood/ impact tremors/ bastion of rememberence. You can also add perilous myr and Pia's revolution/ etherios god of passage to the mjx for extra win cons

TravelFast37

If you like memes, try playing a Quest for Ulas Temple deck. Take like 14 lands, throw in one mana scry/deck manipulation critters, plus some grozoth and inkwells and you'll be set

_buyHigh_sellLow

I'm playing GW Death and Taxes. It's an incredible strong deck if leveraged correctly. Also, if you are playing a lot in the same environment (FNM at your LGS) then it's pretty unfair. You can tailor your deck and sideboard to fit the meta there perfectly. You can also build an Eldrazi and Taxes version, depending on the meta. I personally prefer GW though because of cards like Ooze and collected company. It's fairly budget as well, I spent 300 -350 €on the list I play. Also, every match is different, I've never been bored with it and played it for over 3 and a half years now. It always changes, depending on the meta. The archetype is the same, but the list is completely different. 10/10 recommend It's also a very grindy deck trying to maximise **virtual** card advantage with your flicker. You can protect, evade, trigger etb's etc etc..

ThatGrade4116

Mono green is a good choice right now it just got new support in mh2 and green has more draw power and interaction with your opponent depending on how you play

[[Treasure hunt]] decks are pretty glass cannon and look silly when it goes off. [[Zombie infestation]], [[seismic assault]], [[conflagrate]] for the win, [[swan song]] for protection. Land base isn’t based on fetches! Its gimmicky but fun when you get a win. Not fun in heavy control metas ive found.

Son-of-Apollo

May I present: RG Loam assault https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1960621#paper The idea of the deck is to stick either [[ayula’s inflience]] or [[seismic assault]], and then discard lands every turn with [[wrenn and six]] or [[life from the loam]] to get them back. It’s midrange deck with a “combo finish”, in that once the pieces are assembled, it’s very hard for your opponent to keep any creatures and it’s very easy to pressure their life total. Other than W6, most of the deck is either very cheap (in terms of $) or is playable in other archetypes (fetches, shocks, life from the loam). Best part of the deck is that you can vary the threat package surrounding the main “combo”. Afraid your opponent will have a lot of gy hate? Play more [[tireless trackers]]. Want to go even more all-in on the combo? [[ruination rioter]] can upgrade a shock from seismic assault to near lethal (I’ve one by assaulting my own rioter and then hitting my opponent for 12 off it’s ability). Or you can pick up all your lands with [[living twister]] to get the last few points of damage through. It’s a fun pet deck I’ve been working on for a bit. I posted about it on here a few weeks ago. There’s also the option to splash more colors, such as black for [[unmarked grave]] to either get a loam in the yard to dredge it, or to get a specific utility land in the yard to recur.

AwfulDonkey

How necessary is it to have 4 wrenns? I like the deck, but I only have 3 for jund and they’re ridiculously pricy right now. Aside from that all I would need it loam so this seems like a cool choice.

Son-of-Apollo

You could probably get by with 3. Life from the loam is the better of the two effects for the main plan, W6 is just more flexible. The list I posted is also a little high on enchantment count as well. You could probably just run the assaults and influences, but I kept having issues getting an enchantment to combo off with so I added the vortexes as well. As I said before, you can customize the deck quite a bit to personal taste.

OzyLellowen

I just brewed up a Ug Flash deck last night and got a few games in with it. I think the list has legs and I would love to get a larger sample size than "me and my friend" The basic idea is to get expensive creatures in play at a discount, specifically [[subtlety]] and [[hooting mandrils]] to make [[elder Deep-Fiend]] cost a more reasonable amount. The rest of the deck is made to get you to turn 3/4 and work well at instant speed. I tried the new card [[murktide regent]] but I was a bit to clunky to play with snapcaster and Deep-Fiend. Feel free to mess around with the list if you decide to play it, but if you do could you let me know how it goes? [[Pili-Pala]] + [[Grand Architect]] + some scarecrows + [[Reaper King]] = an amazingly dumb and satisfying combo deck. I added in Tron to mine to make it easier to cast the scarecrows and look for the combo pieces. Edit: Painter's Servant is really important too. Edit 2: Why the downvote? It's not I like a recommended Ponza or 8 Rack.

Tanro

There's a pretty cool day I think magic AIDS brewed up with strict Proctor, kroxa, and some other shenanigans That is non linear, combo-y, and in your colors

AwfulDonkey

This sounds really cool, I already own the kroxas, where can I find a list?

8Rackftw

Could pick up the Rock or 8rack. New stuff for rock coming in MH2 and just a good way to have black and green staples of the format in case you want to go into jund or mono black.

AwfulDonkey

As I said in my post, I currently play all the non blue variants of midrange including GB rock and jund. I appreciate the suggestion though. As for 8rack though, does it feel the same as midrange. I’m a little bit worried to pick up another thoughtseize attrition deck.
