A little section of a hand drawn Paris map I did.

A little section of a hand drawn Paris map I did.

mmmmm_pi

I love it! Since I'm not at all familiar with the layout of Paris, I made a little game of finding this spot on Google Maps. [Found it](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Luxembourg+Gardens/@48.8462217,2.3349718,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x47e671db36de687b:0x791dd61b089f98b!8m2!3d48.8462217!4d2.3371605)! I imagine it was trivial for people who know the city well, but it took me a few minutes.

CamTron89

Thanks, you got it!

Enture

For those unfamiliar with Paris, I'll add that the park is the Luxembourg Garden, and the big building at the right end of the lawn (in OP's drawing ; North end in reality) is the Luxembourg Palace, where the french Senate holds its sessions.

AntipodalDr

The angle is not the usual one so it took me just a little longer to realise what it was 😉

lookieloo2021

Thanks so much for the link...very helpful!👍

TripleDigit

If your map needs a map, it's not much of a map. Absolutely gorgeous drawing though.

Timehz

Little bit to the left are the Catacombs of Paris. A beautiful part which is just a bit outside the touristy parts. Love that neighbourhood.

SnowceanJay

The catacombs are underground, I don't get the "a little bit to the left". You mean one of the enters to the catacombs?

rikers_evil_twin

They exist regardless :)

maxsparx43

Yup really easy, the basketball court you see above the pen cap is where I went to high school

mmmmm_pi

>where I went to high school Talk about very local knowledge :)

Peetz0r

Here it is, aligned on top of Google Maps: https://i.imgur.com/wLHpq36.jpg

CamTron89

Wow this is cool! Cheers

MrPranzo

TIL there is a giant pen right in the middle of Paris

DocVafli

Only when it isn't on strike.

Minguseyes

La plume de ma tante !

RatherBeSkiing

Writers in Paris used to eat parts of that pen to survive. That's where the term Nom de plume comes from.

ordenax

Un stylo grande du Paris. Dont kill me, I am just learning French.

yew_eater

Un grand stylo de Paris.

MoniqueDumont

Huh ... I read your username as jew_eater. I need to wash my mind now

yew_eater

Oh oh... Mon pseudo fait référence à une activité pas très saine (l'if c'est toxique), mais pas à ce point.

DassinJoe

His name is Jean-Marie and he’s a nasty old man.

CamTron89

The pen is there for scale.

unbossing

Oh the humanity!! That giant pencil wiped out like 3 city blocks!!! /s

stanleyleecm

Speechless! This is fantastic

CamTron89

Thank you!

ferulebezel

Now, THIS is MapPorn.

kernelkung

Beautiful!!!!

CamTron89

Thanks!

Ash-the-Druid

On a scale of 1-10 how much hand cramp did you suffer doing this? Amazing work 🥰

CamTron89

Ha yeah probably about an 8. Thanks!

Jealous-Locksmith-72

"Amazing" is the word that came to my mind, too. Love it.

CamTron89

Thank you!

Rhesusmonkeydave

That Pen’s name? Emmanuel Micron

CamTron89

Haha touché

ShopSmartShopS-Mart

Goddamn it you beat me to it

home_travels

Hows your wrist feel?

CamTron89

A times not so great ha, but like they say, no wrist no reward.

ESPeciallyFlynn

Your pun skills are almost at the same level as your drawing skills! Fantastic job! Any tips on how to start for someone who wanted to do their own of their own city?

CamTron89

Find a map that has all the roads and streets and If you have a light screen or a way to trace out the streets, that's the best way to keep scale exact. After that Google earth is what I use as a reference to fill in everything else.

ESPeciallyFlynn

Thank you for the reply! I now have to find the patience to do it!

CitizenJustin

This is incredible!

CamTron89

Thanks!

Skywarslord

this is amazing! I wonder how long all of Paris would take.

CamTron89

Thanks, I'm not sure how long this section took, but the entire piece (20x26" and only covering the Latin Quarter and a little more) took around 80 hours give or take....so probably quite a while haha

NicholasFelix

Did you do the two islands? It's a bit cliche but that's my favourite bit of Paris, I would love to see your version of it.

CamTron89

Yeah I did. More info in my profile to where you can see more pictures of this map.

hdfcv

This is amazing OP, would love to see the entire thing when it is finished. How do you keep the scale so precise ? Do you use a grid coordinate system ?

CamTron89

For smaller ones a grid system is fine but for something so large (this piece is 20x26") I use a light screen to trace out all the roads. Everything after that is referencing satellite images via Google earth.

Ziograffiato

The detail is amazing! You even included President Micron! I’ll see myself out.

CamTron89

Haha thanks!

CloudyCamper

Incredible

CamTron89

Cheers!

walt3rwH1ter

Well, this is probably the best thing I've seen on this sub for a while

CamTron89

Cheers!

walt3rwH1ter

What were you looking at when doing it? Googles maps satellite view? Or something better?

CamTron89

Yep, Google earth satellite images.

mercyc1rcus

Good job. I think you would like r/papertowns and they would absolutely love this!

CamTron89

Thanks!

new_man_jenkins

My jaw actually dropped. The level of detail is incredible. I’m a huge fan of the level of intricacy in this, it makes the piece feel full but also clean. Really really really well done!

CamTron89

Cheers! Glad you like it.

silogramrice

Actual Map Porn, this is incredible.

CamTron89

Thank you!

paranoidroidmarvin

İs there a Giant penis in Paris? Why?

TheseNamesAreLames

The same reason architects and planners and designers have made giant penises since the dawn of time.

Void_Ling

*Trying to take over the world Pinky*.

wadoshnab

Awesome work. I know the area quite well and had fun locating places I know, like the Port Royal RER station at the bottom left (you even drew the underground rails, which are visible from the open roof of the station), or the footsteps of the Pantheon at the bottom right. Are you going to post the entire map?

Stalysfa

Thé building in the parc (right side of the picture) is the palais du Luxembourg (yes, like the country). This is where the Senate is located. You can visit the senate once a year during the « portes ouvertes du patrimoine ». The parc itself is open to public and very often filled with people during the weekends and kids trying to play with their boats in the fountain. I strongly advise any tourist to wander around as it’s not too far away from the pantheon (where some great Frenchmen are buried) and there are many Breton restaurants (great food - galette and crepes).

CamTron89

I will post the completed piece eventually. It includes the Pantheon, Notre Dame and the islands, the large Sorbonne campus and more.

JohnnyBlasticles

Oh we're being talented today are we? Well thanks a lot everybody. Not one of you could have told me?

GeneralVeeers

Wow!! Needs to be posted to r/oddlysatisfying

CamTron89

Thanks !

roamingdavid

Incredible.

Paine91

HOW

MycoLofi

Geeeez dude this is sick <3

CamTron89

Thanks!

Sage010101

Whoa! Savant level stuff.

Coenzyme_

is this le jardin du luxembourg ?

CamTron89

Yes

Baltasilian

Amazing work! What is your process? What tools and techniques do you use?

CamTron89

For a large map like this I find an accurate street map, trace the streets to keep scale exact, everything else is referencing Google earth satellite images. I use mostly micron pens 003,005,01

Eric_350

This is amazing, love it.

CamTron89

Cheers!

dinoo64

Insane !

RailLondonMaritimeYT

Wow, I would've thought this was a scan if you hadn't said you'd drawn it!

SuperMaxx2020

My dumbass thought you drew a penis map

CamTron89

The city planners of Paris can take the credit for that penis haha

jumper451

Incroyable! Jardin du Luxembourg; I proposed to my wife there ten years ago! We hope to be back next year. Wonderful drawing. Thanks for sharing!

CamTron89

That's awesome. Thank you!

ramonplutarque

for the curious bunch that is the jardin du Luxembourg, one of my favorite parks in Paris

Irosour

Breaking news: Giant pen crushes several homes, at least 94 people dead and an expected 200 more injured

ar243

I'm really sorry, but the first thing I saw was a penis

CamTron89

Title of your sex tape.

Morumbi_TO

That is fucking incredible!!!!

CamTron89

Thanks!

_clem_fand_ango_

What pen is that? Macron?

PumpJack_McGee

How's your wrist?

FloridaMulletMan

So cool,

Jinsi_Hou

This is insane!! How much time did it take you? What map source did you use? Does it show today's Paris? Could you post a wider picture? I mean looking at how detailed it is you could probably spot new buildings and such. Do you sell copies of it? I'd be more than willing to buy one

CamTron89

Yeah, msg me for more info.

GuiltyImportance2

used to live near the top left side of your drawing, wonderful city.. your map is amazing!

CamTron89

Thanks!

lookieloo2021

Too awesome for words!!!

CamTron89

Thanks!

lookieloo2021

oiseauvert989

_emre35_

need to be on r/nextfuckinglevel

CamTron89

Thanks!

Miii_Kiii

Impressive. I bet it is really calming and meditation inducing to draw all those little houses. Great for audiobook listening too!!!

CamTron89

Thanks, yes It can be very therapeutic when you're in the zone but also have to give yourself a break from it every so often.

NarcissisticCat

Hardcore fucking porn right there!

TamHtab

Unreal. Absolutely love this

CamTron89

Thanks glad you like it!

SnowceanJay

This is fucking impressive! Congrats! I'd buy and hang it on my wall if it was my city.

CamTron89

Thanks!

LifeSad07041997

Almost as detailed as one of the first British OS map...

uni-versalis

Will you post the entire version? Are you selling prints?

CamTron89

Yeah I'll post the entire version here. And I will be yes.

tobsie1

how much time do you even have?

porcupineapplepieces

This is amazing. If you do more you should film a timelapse.

CamTron89

Thanks, my profile has more info on where you can see more pics and some timelapses

cheek_blushener

Now we can colour in chunks with ms paint labeled "areas I want to go to".

TheSilentRaid

This is amazing. What do you use as base for drawing? Google maps? Also how do make sure the scaling is correct?

CamTron89

After I find an accurate street map I lightly trace the roads for scale. Everything else is referencing satellite images via Google.

TheSilentRaid

That's amazing. Thank you

shadyshadok

Amazing! How did you go about it?

grrrreg

You get an upvote from a parisian You get an upvote for the Luxembourg garden You get an upvote because I can also see my daughter's lycée :) And of course you get an upvote for the beauty of your art.

jpsouzamatos

Congratulations! It's really impressive! How did you learnt to draw so well?

CamTron89

Thanks, I've been drawing maps since I was a kid and have progressed to bigger more detailed ones.

The_Fighting_Wildcat

That’s incredible

ShopSmartShopS-Mart

Is your pen’s nickname Emmanuel?

Say-no-more

Best pens ever!

cuttheclutter

This is incredible OP! What is your process to make a detailed drawing like this? Is it based on actual satellite imagery?

CamTron89

trace the roads lightly so scale is accurate. Everything after that is based on referencing satellite images.

Evil_of_Evils

Definitely gave the rebels the Death Star plans

zargoffkain

How do you do this? Are there any tequniques you use to make sure everything is alligned and to scale or is it just by eye?

CamTron89

For smaller towns and more simple maps you can do it by eye or even with a grid system but for larger maps I lightly trace the roads to ensure scale. Everything after that is referencing satellite images via Google earth.

zargoffkain

Thanks for the reply! I really want to give this a go, seems like a good pair to go with a podcast.

Milith

This would do nicely in poster format inside a Parisian appartment.

rocknrohl

Hey, that is incredible, I tried to do something similiar with my city, but it way way way worse than yours, could you walk us through how you did it? especially how you achieved that precision of the street layout? I drew it just by watching the map and it is too inaccurate, so I suppose your technique is different? Thanks a lot if you find time to describe how you do that, if it is not a secret of course :) Thanks a lot

CamTron89

Find a map that included all the roads you wish to incorporate, then lightly trace the roads to ensure scale. Everything after that is referencing satellite images via Google earth.

4x49ers

There's not where that tree is

aguylivinglife

Wow man, awesome stuff

CamTron89

Cheers!

chatlourd

need to work more on the details

TheBeast88

Whats your process like? Is it all done by hand and eyesight or did you do some tracing or such? I want to do a part of my city like this (its belgrade)

CamTron89

After I find an accurate street map I lightly trace the roads to ensure scale. Everything after that is referencing satellite images via Google earth.

guszi

My dad was a professional surveyer and map maker who would draw by hand years after other people moved to AutoCAD, it reminds me of him and he would have liked this one a lot.

CamTron89

Thanks, that's great, there's something about doing them by hand that adds to it in my opinion and makes the journey more meaningful.

One-Resort-107

lol great job, now I want to do that

CamTron89

Thanks!

hannalii

Really, truly, map porn

CamTron89

Thanks!

keri__

If you would have design Scofield's tattoo, that man would have been free by the 34th minute of the first episode.

Normal-Fall2821

Wow! So beautiful !

CamTron89

Cheers!

cosmonigologist

I can see my lycée :) There are plenty of them in the area but still I’m glad to see it here

hdfcv

That is clearly a baguette and 2 Paris-Brests, don't be silly now.

sickles_and_pickles

so amazing ! wish i had Reddit coins to award this masterpiece

CamTron89

Thanks!

JonhaerysSnow

Wow that's very well done! If I might ask respectfully, why though? Is this practice for a job or is this just for fun for you? Also... are you autistic or something? This is really impressive stuff but I just don't understand why all the effort. Will you hang it as art? I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to understand.

CamTron89

Im an artist, this piece was a commission for a client.

JonhaerysSnow

Wow well it is very impressive! Also I wasn't trying to judge you if it were just for fun! It just seemed like too much hard work to be for that... Thanks for the answer!

cleenders

How do you make these?

CamTron89

After I find an accurate street map which I use to lightly trace the roads. After that it's all referencing satellite images via Google earth.

cleenders

Thank you !

SilverSwallows

do a drawing of Hoi An!

ttofu_

I just cut down one of the trees, get fucked

Clarry91

DooDooSlinger

I went to school on this map

bowlin_forsalad

I really admire this work OP. I assume this is a vellum trace, and since you inspire me to want to do some more of this myself, may I ask you what basemap you used for trace? Was it a print of google earth?

CamTron89

Thanks. Only the streets were traced, nothing else. I just us d a street map from Google. And the rest is just drawn looking at satellite images.

denverblazer

LOVE the Micron 005

lensfog

i can see my house

000CuriousBunny000

wow 👌👌👌

Topnex

Why draw it by yourself when you can just print it in less than a minute? Waste of time.

Smyzmaster

r/shutupnerd

Topnex

How am I the nerd? He wastes his time redrawing Paris.

Smyzmaster

you’re not just a nerd, you’re a jackass. OP worked hard on this because they wanted to. and you just call it a waste of time.

cosmonigologist

You know what "art" is, right?

norbigli

Is it add for pen?
