TheAgeOfTomfoolery

Bruhhhhhh what the fuck??????? I know Acosta was maybe gonna be gone, but to another team in MLS??? I thought he wanted Europe!!

Klaxon5

On a slightly longer time horizon you basically traded Acosta to LAFC for Kaye and $500k in GAM.

litthefilter

Kaye, $675K and Mo Omar https://twitter.com/mattdoyle76/status/1482007386256781312?s=21

Thundering165

I think Omar will be a decent player and even without him the Rapids win that trade

tigersanddawgs

I guess Colorado wins that trade? I don’t know

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

Eh I dont know either. Kellyn was pretty expensive salary wise and he misses A LOT of time to national team duty. He gets called up for every window, whether is WC qualifiers, or camp cupcake. Kaye is cheaper...but still has the national team issue.

lawvol

Kellyn is 8 months younger - *shrug*

cerebrix

I think about it like this. Between Kaye and Acosta. Acosta will do 2 things Kaye couldn't for LAFC without question. 1) be a threat that opens up space for Vela 2) He'll get better attacking passes to Vela than Kaye could ever dream to. Especially with Arango also now being a player few defenses in MLS will take lightly. Acosta for me, changes how you look at LAFC's attack in a big way. He makes it WAY more aggressive.

vvalent2

Not to mention Acosta can actually hit the broadside of a barn unlike Kaye. I've never had as little faith in a player to score as I did whenever Kaye got the ball in a good shooting position. Massive upgrade with no downside outside maybe comparative cost to bring them in.

Dr-Pope

Kaye was abysmal for LAFC before we traded him. I think both teams stand to come out of these trades better off, we’re pretty excited about Acosta.

gogorath

Yeah, I think people are missing that Kaye needed the change of scenery.

dragonz-99

I’m excited but I hope he does want to play for us. If he wants out I hope we honor his wishes but with Thorington’s track record I’d be worried about that.

gogorath

I think LAFC might actually use Kellyn where he belongs, so this might be closer to a win-win-win?

your_average_entity

How was Colorado misusing Acosta?

gogorath

He spent a decent portion of the year at outside back. It was right for them, I'm sure -- they have a bunch of central mids, and they were missing players and he's versatile. But he's best as a destroyer, and he didn't get to play that all the time last year.

anomadichobo

This just isn't true. He filled in emergency only a couple of times. He played almost every game available next to Price in the midfield. Galvan, Trusty, and others played left back after Vines departed.

BurnerForDaddy

Los Angeles is the Europe of Southern California

Campcamp

I can feel my mind expanding just reading this lol

majorgeneralporter

Santa Barbara would object that that's their bougie slogan.

cerebrix

That makes Carmel the Netherlands

MrDaveyHavoc

Central California would object to having their jewel called Southern

voxnemo

I am more surprised they sold to a West Coast conference team. If you are going to sell in MLS at that level at least sell across conferences. I have to think this shows where the FO is in business vs sport. Business all the way, which my Rapids friends are telling me should not be a surprise at all.

AMountainTiger

If the same offer was on the table from someone in the East that would be a reason to prefer it, but conference considerations aren't worth giving up actual value that can improve the Rapids.

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

Twellman tweeted the Revs almost got him but the asking price was too high for them.

YaBoiTheDuck

After Lletget I don't know how we would've been able to swing another huge GAM deal, would've been crazy though

Correct-Corner

This trade sucks! I'm so pissed.

MEitniear11

WHY WOULD WE DO THIS???

weebabyarcher

If he had moved to Europe I would have been excited for him, but sad for the loss to the team. Now I'm just devastated. WTF.

NoBreadsticks

Damn, this seems outta nowhere

efburke

It is in a way, but it also makes a sort of sense. Acosta's stock is at a premium right now, so a good time to move him if that's what we're looking to do. We also have a *lot* of depth in midfield *and* just added a high value young midfielder from Brazil. Add in the fact that from the FO perspective he's fairly expensive (for a stingy team such as ours) and misses a lot of time to national team duty...I think Rapids fans are a bit surprised, but generally OK we're making the move.

PDXistential_Crisis

I also see it as more eyes are on LAFC than Colorado, unfortunately, and if he does well there he is more likely to move to Europe. If that's the case, maybe they calculated the sell-on percentage plus what they got from LAFC is better than what they were expecting to get from selling him to Europe?

AMountainTiger

Max GAM conversion is only $1m, so even if none of the incentives come through we're ahead of an external sale there. Obviously real money is potentially useful as TAM or money for DPs, but we don't strictly need sales to spend on those if Kroenke wants to and whether sale proceeds would actually go to the roster is an open question.

dragonz-99

If he moves in to Europe we’ll probably only have him for a year or 2 then. Could end up being big for Colorado with the sell-on? I dunno Meanwhile they got Kaye who’s been in form and GAM? Shitty situation for Acosta but I guess smart move from Colorado.

PaulSoccerFraud

I hope we get a number 9. Though it is cheap ass Kroenke running this team, so one can hope :/

your_average_entity

You’ll get Jozy and you’ll like it

WelpSigh

tbh jozy isn't so bad when he's not constantly injured

efburke

>when he's not constantly injured When would this be?

WelpSigh

maybe he's just unlucky and he's about to go on a 50 goal streak

efburke

not with the rapids lol there's no way we'd have such luck!

twoterms

Like 10 years ago

lordcorbran

Jozy's battled injuries his whole career. They're more frequent now, but they've always been a problem, and usually at the worst possible time.

sherlocknessmonster

Maybe in a legal weed state he won't be injured as much

clyguy33

weed is legal in canada, trust me it hasn’t helped him the last 3 years lol

sherlocknessmonster

I forgot Canada went with federal legalization.

clyguy33

nah hes pretty bad now, cant run for more than 10 minutes without looking like hes about to pass out

PDXistential_Crisis

I think Adi is available, too. Sad how the mighty fall.

Klaxon5

Kronke sucks wet ass, but Padraig Smith is low-key a top 3 GM in the league.

notmadeofbacon

Four or five years ago I was ready to throw out the baby, the bathwater, and half the house. Padraig has been on his shit since then and I hope he stays with the Rapids for a long time.

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

Remember, Padraig only really took control in lik 2018. Hiring Hudson was a blunder, as were his first few international signings. But he has really grown into the role since then

rockayama

He came on in 2015(?) ... who was running the show before 2018?

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

Tim Hinchey who has since gone to fuck up USA swimming. Padraig wasnt in charge until 17 or 18. Padraig also didnt want the Tim Howard deal but Hinchey went ahead with it.

badkarma765

You better hope Kroenke pays him competitively...

AMountainTiger

Frees up a bunch of GAM that won't have to go towards buying down his salary as well. Should have a good chunk of Garberbucks to throw at a striker.

PatrickJasonBateman

Thank you, this deal seemed weird to me prima facie.

Galaxyfan89

That seems like a lot for Acosta but dang by comparison we got fleeced for Lleget on the incentive break down

RodJohnsonSays

A small price to pay.

Galaxyfan89

I’m not gunna lie this actually made me laugh. I’m actually a fan of ur Lleget JDS takes

RodJohnsonSays

Haha. In all seriousness, I really do wish Lletget the best. I started in this subreddit back in 2013 when the Galaxy were still the bad guys - I remember a time when *any* comment by a Galaxy fan was instantly downvoted into the ocean. I decided to take the angle of "incorrigible fan with a reasonable observation" angle. My karma has suffered a lot less since then with a bit of self-deprecation mixed in.

section135

We weren't about to turn lletget over to lafc....but man they are suckers....might have been worth it.

brovakin88

Kaye for Acosta seems like a weird bit of business for both teams but whatever I guess?

section135

Colorado comes out on top by like $1.1m if you consider salary.

dragonz-99

Yeah we’re kinda the losers here because Acosta will probably move on after a year. But it’s flashy for our GM after a bad year? I dunno. Hope he plays well for us. I’m a big USMNT fan so I’ll be getting his jersey probably

cmortis

I guess there's only room for one Acosta in Colorado

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

We havent signed Bryan Acosta. He is reportedly looking outside the league

rockayama

Danilo Acosta then?

Murricles92

already in USL

rockayama

... George Acosta?

NotClintDempsey

man... that dude was suppose to be like, real good one day

Buffaloslim

Well fuck it, we had ONE good year.

jackbennyXVI

The Western Conference Finals devastated me more than when my own team got eliminated lol

604-Guy

Damn didn’t expect Rapids to sell after the year they had. Especially to a team in their own conference.

Tubocass

1.5 mil in GAM is hard to turn down; and they freed up serious cap-space. We'll have to judge them based on who they get to replace him. Whoever it is, will probably be a lot cheaper.

50ShadesofBray

Word is they couldn't come to terms on an extension with Acosta, so it seems like they decided if they were going to lose him sooner or later they might as well sell him on and get some value.

WirelessElk

A Kaye-Acosta swap makes a lot of sense when you consider that Acosta is better suited to be an Atuesta replacement. Both ball-winning d-mids who are good at set piece delivery. I highly doubt he can be as good as Atuesta but maybe a change of scenery will help him reach a higher level, idk

marker84

Fuck yeah

Matsu09

Lol. This is a terrible trade for ya'll.

marker84

How?

msgfree

Have you not seen Acosta play? lol

your_average_entity

Yes? He’s extremely reliable and a good passer, excellent set piece ability too, and some solid vision. All the traits you want from your d-mid

gtg007w

He has been great for USMNT and Colorado. Not sure what you're watching.

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

The US Soccer fan narrative of "Acosta is shit" is one the worst narratives in the us soccer fan community.

lordcorbran

It's especially weird because while he hasn't always been consistent, he's turned in some great performances for the USMNT.

Kilo1799

So essentially, plus the extra money, they traded MAK for Kellyn Acosta

WhoopingPig

I guess that's *Acosta doing business* Wish we bought him

TheApetrixHasYou

underrated

jacktazz12345

Let’s get this shit let’s get this let’s get this shit

gtg007w

(quite literally for me) top of the mornin' top of the mornin' top of the mornin' top of the mornin'

Shway_

So they got rid of his twin in order to sign the other.

jackbennyXVI

I really really like this for us. Obviously LAFC needed to make a splash but signing good domestic players will go a very long way too, hopefully this helps us atone for our sins of trading Walker Zimmerman away

Chubbs42

Nooooo I liked him with the Rapids.

cain62

Didn’t Acosta make a long Instagram post about a year ago saying he was going to move to Europe?

QuickMolasses

I don't think he'll get a move to Europe unless he goes on a free. European teams haven't really seemed to buy players like Acosta.

beermingham

I guess European clubs don't rate his sassy attitude as much as Gregg.

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

Yeah I thought for sure he would go to Europe. I know championship sides have been interested before.

section135

Lol. Lafc just gifting Colorado cash and cap space. They traded away kaye on $247k for $1m gam, then trade for Acosta on $1.1 (likely to increase in 2022) for $1.5gam. Pretty big win for Colorado

whoisbeck

Honestly seems like a win for everyone

section135

Seems like a bigger win for Colorado

Hans-Wermhatt

Yeah, since when did Acosta become a top midfielder in MLS? By the eye test and his numbers, he is very average in MLS.

section135

When he signed for LaFC....of course. Who are still somehow Vegas odds favorite to win MLS cup in 2022. Talk about shipping it in vegas...cmon

Hans-Wermhatt

Check the post about them signing Cory Baird, the reactions in this thread feel like deja vu. Edit: I made the same exact post in there... https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/kv66gq/lafc_acquires_us_international_forward_corey/gix3m9p/ https://www.reddit.com/r/LAFC/comments/kv66ui/lafc_acquires_us_international_forward_corey/

galaxitive

👎👎👎

Brooklyn_MLS

LAFC have a central midfield of Cifuentes—Sanchez—Acosta—Blessing. How they all gonna fit?

HoopBrews

My guess is Blessing goes back to being more a utility man/second half energy sub, which he excels at.

Jolandia

That’s wack

Firefan23

SMH at the Rapids.....just selling everyone and not building off the great team they had. Wonder how well they'll do next year. #KronkeOut

gtg007w

When player stocks rise after a good season, either FO wants to capitalize by selling so they can reinvest or players want better contracts elsewhere. That's MLS for ya. We too sold off bunch of players after a great season in 2019.

_tidalwave11

Well yall were in a different situation. You guys were running out of the expansion gam/tam and needed to clear roster space.

Hans-Wermhatt

I thought LAFC had more ambition than this... This is a disappointing move for LAFC and for Acosta in my opinion. Average player that's going to take a huge chunk of salary including his allocation money costs.

pants6789

Average for this league?

thethomatoman

Tf? MLS is weird

_tidalwave11

Wow. Big big surprise here

willdesignfortacos

Man, would've loved to have him in Austin to play in the midfield with Ring. Will be interesting to see how Valencia turns out in comparison.

HomChkn

Is LAFC playing with 2 6s? Ilie and Kelly parked in front of the CBs?

DarCam7

The most expensive "meh" trade ever. Colorado and LAFC always be trailblazin'.

mdconnors

I think one of the more over hyped usmnt prospects. Sell him when his stock is hot

ShivaDestroy

And Acosta is NOT happy.
