And here's the official article, stickied since it came a half hour after the press conference started. https://www.sportingkc.com/news/sporting-kc-forward-alan-pulido-to-miss-2022-season-following-knee-surgery

arkyhawk

FUCK WHAT THE FUCK

Remulus10

Lol mods you can probably go ahead and fade us now

Redhead_Raptor

oh

BorisChinchilla

Just brutal. Kinda to miss preseason and the start of the season too.

RvH19

I wish you could put players on a season ending injury list and be able to spend the equivalent salary on a player. Even if it is a DP spot. It sucked with it was Jordan Morris. It is going to suck for SKC. They aren't gaming a system for a competitive advantage. They just want a reasonable replacement.

FountainCityFC

only league in the world where ambition is punished.

GaddisGolazo

Luxury tax

litthefilter

Gadi Kinda is also going to miss all of preseason and the beginning of the regular season.

colewcar

That really sucks. He’s not going to hit form until mid season at best. Losing all of preseason and start of regular season really fucks things up.

wisepunk21

big oooof for sporks. sorry bbq peoples.

super_kami_guru87

Eats some burnt ends while crying.

jjspacer

.... And that's why they wanted to sign Beric

417SKCFAN

I don’t think they knew this until today, he arrived back in KC yesterday and would have undergone medical today. If they knew, he would have gone straight to LA.

[deleted]

I read that they knew since shortly after his surgery in October, which they hoped would be enough to avoid this major surgery but ended up just being enough to let him play a bit before this major surgery. Also read that he's out 9 to 12 months so even if they scheduled it for the day after the season ended, he'd miss all of 2022 so they opted to let him have some family fun time since there was no benefit to doing it sooner for either SKC or his hopes for playing in the world cup.

JayhawkCSC

We are cursed when it comes to DP signings. :(

TheAgeOfTomfoolery

At least your DPs produce when they are healthy. Our DPs make millions to do nothing on the field.

Institutional-GUH

I feel that after Guiti too. Our toughest matchup in recent seasons have been SKC vs Fitness. FUCK

Machetegun_

Well that's partially due to PV not subbing

cheeseburgerandrice

neither of these issues can be put on that

Mat_alThor

Not about subbing but it was pretty obvious Pulido want healthy against RSL, have to wonder if playing him then contributed to needing surgery.

[deleted]

It didn't. From what I read on thebluetestament they knew shortly after the surgery in October that he'd need something more major in the offseason.

cheeseburgerandrice

I could be wrong but with knee issues like that, if he needed it now he likely needed it before playing too. You'll often see players play through knee issues for a bit before finally having surgery. It's not like they rushed back a hamstring tear.

Machetegun_

I'm only replying about SKC vs Fitness. We had half the team out on decision day due to lower body injury which was basically just tired legs.

KilgoreTroutsAnus

We can't even spell "DP"

Medala_

Bruh

KickapooPonies

Man this is just a kick in the nuts. I'm not even sure why I continue you have optimistic expectations. Better to expect nothing. Sure we can find someone still, but how much are we gonna spend? It wouldn't be prudent to spend a lot if Pulido is still in our long term solution and if Pulido is now a big "what-if" then boy does that signing look dreadful now.

[deleted]

I think a better question is how much CAN they spend? They're fully loaded on DPs and I don't think any of them can be bought down and even if they could free up a DP slot with some roster mechanism for Pulido's injury they'd then have 4 DPs for 2023. They can bring in a U22 guy and avoid the fee adding to the budget but they are still limited in what they can pay him.

overscore_

From what I understand of the roster rules and the state of SKC's roster (which is a good bit, but definitely not a perfect understanding): * They can and probably will put Pulido on the season-ending injury list. That gets back his roster spot and international spot, but not his DP spot. They can pay someone up to $250k to replace him. * Russell and maybe Kinda can be bought down off their DP status, but doing so might take more garberbucks than would be prudent. Russell is on max TAM so they'd need to spend a full million at least. Kinda might be cheaper depending on how transfer fees apply. * IMO, the most likely solution is a veteran stopgap and giving the kids more time now that they have another year under their belt. * SKC also has room to add up to 3 Young Money signings, and with Vermes saying he's planning to add to all 3 lines, some of those signings are likely U22.

Olmak_

>I'm not even sure why I continue you have optimistic expectations. Better to expect nothing. If you are already thinking the season is going to be crap, I'm 100% behind just having no expectations. It can allow you to still be excited about the team without being frustrated if the results aren't great. That was my strategy last year after the injuries to Morris, Frei, and Delem along with Lodeiro's ongoing knee issues. I just started looking forward to the opportunities the younger players were going to be able to get. When the team cooled off towards the end of the year I was still extremely happy with the season because they had performed way better than I had expected.

KickapooPonies

Yeah I was already trying to do that this season, but apparently my expectations were just a tad too high still haha.

overscore_

Additional things from the press conference: Kinda will miss the start of the season with his own surgery. No Beric confirmed. Still no new contracts for Zusi and Roger. A few signings will be announced this week.

dudehimself3

Logan Ndenbe the Belgian U21 LB I’m pretty sure. Saw an article that linked him to SKC

BorisChinchilla

And Voloder a young Koln/Maribor CB

TraptNSuit

But will Vermes use a sub?

CaptainJingles

You already know the answer.

therealflyingtoastr

Pulido is quality, but the dude just cannot stay healthy. Wonder if SKC is going to burn their buyout and open up that DP spot now.

Novel_Tie

[Doesn't sound like it.](https://twitter.com/PlayFor90/status/1480951307259240449)

therealflyingtoastr

Interesting. SKC can still get some cap relief by placing Pulido on the season ending injury list (since he would go on the list prior to the close of the primary transfer window), but his replacement player can only earn a maximum of $250k so it's still going to limit their roster greatly. Going all year with only 2 DP spots and gambling that Pulido will come back in-form and stay healthy next year (the final year of his contract IIRC) to make it worth keeping him around is a huge risk. But I'm just a Reddit armchair coach, so who am I to question Peter Vermes.

cheeseburgerandrice

I guess at least it's happening now while there is still some time to respond. Wonder if a type of deal like a loan with option to buy would work out in this scenario if they found a talented, younger player.

[deleted]

SKC really does suck ass at picking expensive players. Every dude they've ever made a millionaire has had a ton of fuckin injury problems. Fontas is the first one to ever find consistent form without injury for even one full season.

bailout911

Blame the narrative that Kansas City is flyover country. We have to overpay to get guys here because we're not "sexy" like LA or NY, if we can even get them to sign in the first place.

lordcorbran

Not saying that isn't a factor, but when you look at a team like Columbus that's in the same boat but has gotten huge impacts from their DPs that excuse only goes so far.

FountainCityFC

WOW. I hate this answer. Season hasn't started and he could be bought out but we'd rather just say nah we don't want to win anything this year. I don't care about this season so far.

FountainCityFC

"Vermes when asked if they are looking for a DP striker: "We have all three DPs already accounted for, so it won't be be a DP." #SportingKC" Via Chad Smith.

TraptNSuit

So I guess we know that buying down Kinda or Russell isn't happening either then.

BorisChinchilla

If you had a million dollar asset would you pay $4.4M to give it away for free? That’s what a buyout would do. We’d owe him 2 yrs salary and he could leave on a free.

FountainCityFC

So buy down another DP since we have two who can under the cap and sign a striker baaabbyy. Also why the downvote.

[deleted]

Then we'd have to figure it all out again in 2023. Not saying that's the wrong move, but it's delaying the inevitable.

BorisChinchilla

What downvote?

FountainCityFC

Also its not our money. Toronto buying out Jozy to sign Insigne. We are talking about billionaire owners. This just hurts us the fans who pay to watch.

Sporkedup

I'm not sure buying out a player because he goes down with a serious injury is considered very good form for a club. Particularly not if they do it *immediately following the diagnosis*.

colewcar

What about the verbiage, though? With what he said… does it not rule out buying down a current DP to TAM level to then acquire a new DP?

ngower

Jesus. Didn’t he miss a lot of this season too?

KickapooPonies

Yeah he missed a bit. 33 appearances over 2 seasons; so not even starts. Looks like he only has 26 starts.

Pale-Calligrapher974

I cry

shunna75

Welp. Onto 2023.

Jolandia

Damn, that really sucks. Just brutal, sorry skc fans

WEHAVEBETTERBBQ

I hear Cubo Torres is available lol

holman

Was really bummed the Quakes were rumored to lead in the race to sign Pulido and ended up missing out. Slightly feel better about that today, but mostly just really bummed for both Pulido and the KC fanbase. Injuries — particularly serious ones like these — are no fun for anybody. Hopefully Alan has a healthy recovery.

OBatRFan

Let me out of this simulation

shr3dthegnarbrah

Let's overwrite this save and start a new one.

417SKCFAN

Said it on the SKC thread, Pulido turns 31 in March and will be 32 in the last year of his contract coming off what appears to be major surgery. It’s time to buy him out and cut our losses.

BorisChinchilla

I think he still has value in Mexico…I’d rather sell him than buy him out and let him leave on a free.

xjoeymillerx

Even if that involves him holding a DP slot hostage all year til he gets healthy?

itsjavigold

Nah at least not anything even comparable to what was paid for him in the first place

BorisChinchilla

Fine, but that’s not the relevant comparison. It’s compared to -$4.4M which would be what it would cost to buy him out and let him leave on a free.

Galaxyfan89

This guy had the worst luck

SuperHumaaan

Uuufffff

cheeseburgerandrice

well that's just awful

TraptNSuit

We're boned

Scratchbuttdontsniff

Hate having SKC not at full strength for our first match of the season. Hopefully the entertainment disappointment is alleviated with 3 points.

cheeseburgerandrice

you would definitely be disappointed if you didn't pull out 3 points at home against a team missing two of their DPs

capn_sanjuro

You're in trouble. Our first game is always one of our best of the season. It always goes downhill from there.

rvp9362

If SKC is smart, they should go all out to trade for Ola Kamara

FountainCityFC

Billionaire cheap owners. Kinda can be bought down to non DP. Only true DP is Pulido. Buy him out and spend big. Let the fans know you care. Don't bring back Dom Dwyer.

KickapooPonies

But if they bring back Dom Dwyer they will have more money for Jake and his real doll collection.

AnusQuarterPounder77

Please provide some backstory to this, you can’t just drop this and leave me hanging

KickapooPonies

It's a running gag amongst our small group of friends. Ever since Jake took over any SKC fan can see that the whole experience has noticeably dropped off. So one time we were took turns guessing what Jake was spending all that extra cash on and Real Dolls was the winner. The guy just had a bad vibe about him and it just gets worse when you are around him in person. Couple that with the way he has viewed the club as nothing more than a ledger sheet and we start taking knocks at him. TL;DR We think Jake Reid is a money grubbing tool and we make fun of him by implying he has a Real Doll collection.

UlricVonDicktenstein

Yep I completely agree. Wasn't long after Jake took over that I cancelled my season tickets and have very little interest in giving them any more of my money. He's running things into the ground.

majorvolta

Everything is more expensive year over year since he took over. The $8 beer is now $11. Food is Kaufman prices. Cauldron tickets are cheap still thank god, but I find myself spending more going to games than I used to and it’s probably going to be an area I scale back on this season to save some money.

FountainCityFC

Exactly please help us here. Already think that dude is a tool.

KickapooPonies

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

FountainCityFC

Jake Reid downvoted us

Shadowfury0

I'm not sure I need to learn more, but citation needed

litthefilter

Who is Jake?

KickapooPonies

Jake Reid; the current CEO and President.

FountainCityFC

Bro what? WHAT?

SayNoToCargoShorts

from State Farm.

WislaHD

Vermes will end up rotating in a youth team finally. Except it will be in CCL I am sure.

skepticalbob

Austin FC had a guy decide to have surgery midseason, collected the paycheck for the season, then retired at the end of the season. Hope this isn't happening here.

Sporkedup

Think there's a pretty big difference from a spot-starter/rotation guy and a guy on a multi-million dollar salary though. Pulido has never seemed anything but a consummate competitor, so unless his injury is way worse than even they think now, I am rather confident he'll return in 2023.

RvH19

Who was that? I kinda tuned out on Austin in the back half of the season for the most part.

skepticalbob

Aaron Schoenfeld. Never made an appearance. Delayed surgery, then decided to have it. Then retired end of season.

RvH19

Eh, Big Celery. He is just as useful on the sideline as he is on the field. Just a wasted roster spot.

skepticalbob

We went about half the season without a striker too. It was brutal.

RvH19

I would argue Austin went the whole season without a striker.

skepticalbob

Lol. Nah, Djitte is a striker.

RvH19

Oh yeah. He is pretty good but raw. Djitte is definitely a striker. How quick I forget.

Brooklyn_MLS

I think you have to buy him out at this point—just turned 30, these things don’t get better…

cheeseburgerandrice

SKC and Vermes are historically very on the ball with the oddities of MLS rules, I wonder what their move is with this. Certainly not a great situation either way.

Sporkedup

Yes they can and do. All the time. You're repeating what basically everyone said--and rightfully so--about Fontas, for years. But then he gets healthy and becomes incredibly successful for the team. Buying out a player who is struggling with injuries or down for their first long waylay is how Ike Opara never has a professional career past San Jose. Vermes is very patient with his players that struggle with injury. Guys like Fontas, Opara, Nemeth, Gutierrez, and so on were injury-liable before they arrived in KC (unlike Pulido), and with some faith from the coach and not just being kicked to the curb they provided some real quality. Well, okay, Nemeth didn't have any significant injuries with us, but the others did.

ChurchillDownz

I hope they just pay his contract out and move on. Ugh.

iheartdev247

Ouch. Rough signing.

Sporkedup

Great signing. Bad luck with injuries. Can happen to any player.

iheartdev247

Great player, it’s turns out to Be a bad signing

xjoeymillerx

They call him Mr Glass…

TheCapitolCrusader

Know what they don’t call you? MLS CHAMPIONS.

xjoeymillerx

Correct. I never played in MLS. Who’d you play for?

Nashocheese

OK. Real talk now guys. HOW MANY Liga MX signings come to MLS and are both healthy and consistently good? We got Efrain Jaurez and I'm telling you right now, I genuinely don't care if we never get a Liga MX player on the whitecaps again. These guys are constantly injured.
