Match Thread: Canada vs Haiti | FIFA World Cup Qualifying - CONCACAF

Let's fucking party 🎉
Someone hold me... I am having a lot of feelings right now.
Vancouver likely hosts the January games. Toronto and Montreal likely hosts others. CSA may let Edmonton/Calgary/Halifax host a game against the likes of Panama or El Salvador in their ~6000 seat stadiums that have actual grass fields.
Edmonton's field is artificial turf
At Clarke Stadium?
I mean clearly you play at commonwealth against Mexico. Because fuck them thats why. Make us play at azteca well fuck you heres some tundra.
halifax in january it is!
I read it was grass.
> Clarke Stadium
Its turf but high end stuff.
Where does Can MNT play their home Ocho matches? Any chance of playing in St. John's?
BMO in Toronto, BC Place in Vancouver, and Commonwealth in Edmonton are likely spots for the upcoming home matches. The O or Saputo in Montreal is also possible, but I'd say less likely than those three with BMO being likely most likely descending from there.
I'd be really cool to see a match out at George V in St John's, but in reality that pitch is pretty rough and the facilities really aren't at level. I'd doubt they play there. But it would be cool to see.
Traditionally we've played pretty much every game in Toronto. Which is kinda controversial but, selfishly, works for me.
Some are in the winter (Oct, Nov, Jan) so they might have to play in Vancouver? Will be weird having Hex/Octo games on turf, that hasn't happened since the old Saprissa stadium before Costa Rica built their national stadium.
tfc have played home games in all those months so *shrugs* (I think we did a jan concacaf game once? or was that EARLY feb? brain is going)
The women's team plays mostly in Vancouver so they're no stranger to hosting our national side either. But in the past it was turf that was always the main reason they chose BMO (which also annoyed Montreal since they do have grass. Which is fair). I know it was also about flights from Europe being more convenient.
But you are correct, I forgot some games are in the winter. Not used to playing this late into qualifying tbh...
It seems Vancouver is the likeliest for those games but I guess we will see!
> I know it was also about flights from Europe being more convenient
Anyone want to see a match or two vs Central American opposition in St. Johns or Halifax?
I'd bet we see the Jan games out at BC Place or the O. But outside that, Toronto is still a possible host for all the other dates. Even with the snow we might have on the ground.
Well the US has found that the snow can be an advantage...
Are there large immigrant groups there?
Well of teams they’d face in the next round.
Only jamacia. The greater Toronto area has a lot of jamacians, think something along the lines of 200 thousand people. Every other nationality not so much
Fun fact: Canada's starting lineup today actually featured three players that are both from the Toronto area and of jamcian background. ( Cyle Larin, Mark Anthony-kaye and doneil Henry)
Toronto basically has a decent population of all countries. Of the Ocho teams the biggest are Jamaica, El Salvador and Honduras.
But also since Toronto is close to some major US population centres, fans from there travel well.
Lots of Jamaicans in the GTA. There is a decent amount of people from the Central American nations as well, but it is nowhere near enough to take over BMO.
There are groups but I wouldn't say they're huge. I don't remember ever playing México which would be a real test (my husband is actually Mexican, haha), but for Panama, Honduras, etc. there is a healthy crowd but nothing that actually upsets me. I like "away" fans. Jamaica would also likely be a test since there are plenty of Jamaicans in Toronto.
Years ago we.played a critical game vs Mexico at varsity, and crowd was overwhelmingly for Mexico. I'll guess it was qualifying for US94. Lost, and played Australia as a second chance, lost that too.
Other than USA, there will be sizeable support for the visiting squads in Toronto. Just comes with territory of being an international city. Better choice for a home crowd advantage would be Winnipeg or Edmonton.
Was there as much interest in football in 94 as there is today? I recall with the match vs Mexico in Vancouver last cycle the crowd appeared to be something like 60-40 for Canada and I could only imagine that ratio would be higher for us in Toronto or Montreal
Jamaica fans were basically even in numbrs with Canadian fans at the last match in BMO.
Makes sense. When would that have been?
I remember seeing clips of the Onstad own goal vs Jamaica and it was a *very* pro-Jamaica crowd. But that was before my time following the team.
Toronto, Vancouver, maybe Montreal
Gotta love Borjan's love for the country. You can see how much representing the Country that welcomed his family with open arms when they were fleeing war means to him.
I loved the clip of him in the huddle, pointing to the crest on his jersey
So glad we got those last couple goals so this could feel good properly.
I remember sitting in a bar all decked out in Canada gear for 8-1. This feels good, man...
man. that honduras game before that when we drew after DOMINATING them at bmo came up in my fb memories like 2 weeks ago and I was triggered all over again
Hell yes let’s go!! First time in the final round in 20+ years!
This is a little bittersweet. I think both Suriname and Haiti were teams I ultimately didn't want to see fail to qualify. Harsh we ended up playing against both, but I am excited to see Suriname specifically in the Gold Cup with their 'new' squad.
Really exciting over all though. Cannot believe the transformation we've seen with the CMNT over the past few decades. This is incredible. Very proud of the work put in by the players to get us here.
I'm with you on Haiti. After the Gold Cup, they were more than deserving to qualify over El Salvador and Panama. Beating them handily does show we're not going to be taken lightly in the final stage.
We need to build a stadium in the Yukon immediately. If we have to go to Honduras and El Salvador and get bags of piss thrown at us, they should have to play in -60 temperatures.
What they should do: play in Edmonton, Regina, or Winnipeg in the winter.
What they will end up doing: playing at Olympic Stadium or BC Place in the winter.
I don't imagine our guys want to play in those conditions either.
I'm with you on Winter, but Fall in the Prairies or Maritimes could get really interesting against the Central American opposition.
100% agree. In the mean time we should be playing at Edmonton and Winnipeg for the winted
I'd love to see this. I'd love to see more 'NBA Street' style stadiums.
I want to see you guys playing in Edmonton in December... pull a US v Costa Rica on them.
Canada vs USA is going to be good
Looks like Hoilett meant to do that lol
Yup, a little fuck you for sure.
Would not be surprised if it’s USA Mexico and Canada as the top three in the octagon. CR has not played well. Much of panamas golden generation is no longer playing. Honduras is so on and off. ES is young and I can’t really tell how good they are since they got arguably the weakest team from the last 6 of round 2. Nothing against Jamaica I just don’t know much about them.
Jamaica is the 3rd best team in concacaf on paper. Almost half their team plays in the premier league. No one is talking about them as a threat and I have no idea why
Because they weren't in the Nations League final four
Ahh, the old "out of sight, out of mind". Crazy how one terrible Andre Blake mistake put them in that situation. They are back in league 1 though
We are a "what have you done for me lately" kind of people
I think that's a pretty fair bet.
I just worry about the issues they had finishing the last few games. This game could have been 7 - 0 easy.
I think 3rd is entirely possible. But should not be expected.
This group is playing for 4th and thats how it will be.
With the schedule confirmed, if we have 14 points by the end of the year. I think they have a chance.
It will all come down to the back line and Borjan/Crepeau.
Playing for 4th is risky though.
33% chance of drawing new Zealand, who we should beat. 33% chance of drawing the 5th African team, which we should be alright with.
But 33% chance of drawing the 5th best team in South America...
That would be an Asian team, not an African one.
> African team
Ahhh I dont want to do that either. That will be teams like Eqypt. Morocco, Algeria etc.
True, I'm just saying that we should be measured in our expectations. The team can absolutely go for 3rd, but with their history and lack of depth in the backline, this is a more reasonable aim, if only for fans to look at at this time.
Offensively I agree. I question the Canada backline being able to keep a 1-nil loss from devolving into a multiple-goal loss in hostile, away territory though
Jamaica feels like they're always having some sort of internal struggle
All I can think about is how good they’d be if their English Jamaican players chose Jamaica
Jamaica would basically be forced to rely on whatever players they can get that are playing outside the country, as the domestic league there can't even be described as anything other than semi-pro.
their keeper is pretty dang good imho
feels like partially corruption and partially a culture clash between the English born and Jamaican born players
I think they are absolutely the best 3 teams. Canada needs to learn to put matches away and exercise some Central American demons but they are better than CR, ES, Honduras and Panama. Jamaica may well be the wild card, plenty of talent.
For sure. But I want to see how they handle playing on the road vs those teams. Even the US and Mexico struggle at Honduras, CR, ES, Panama
We struggle on the road in Honduras as well. 2018 WCQ was a 2-1 loss. 2014 WCQ was that embarrassing 8-1 loss.
let's not talk about san pedro sula, ever.
Deal if we never talk about TnT
works for me
To reiterate a point I made last week: you can't call other nations "minnows" if you can't walk away with a convincing win over a seriously-gimped minnow.
That definitely makes you a minnow as well.
e: it's okay. I know making it to the expanded Oct is a big deal for you Canucks, but up until the missing players and the own goal, it was still possible that Haiti would've squeaked by. And the larger soccer world wouldn't have batted an eye.
I don't know that anyone has called Haiti or even Suriname minnows. Those comments from CMNT fans have been primarily against sides we've managed double digit to nill results against. So this comment feels a bit daft to me, you seem to be taking a weird view on fans commenting on minnows as you seem to be misidentifying who they've called minnows.
Lol you're sad. surely you have something, literally anything better to do.
Man shut the fuck up and let us be happy.
This is pretty convincing, and a clean sheet for 180 minutes is solid for a team whose weakest aspect is defense.
But I do agree people are too quick to minimize other nations in CONCACAF
Thankfully we're convincingly beating a "seriously-gimped minnow" so we can now say Cayman Islands are a minnow.
Remember before a fucking global pandemic... Canada was likely going to have to beat like 6 teams in a 2 leg tie just to get a chance to get a 2 legged tie vs the 4th place team in The Hex.... only to get another 2 legged tie vs another confederation partial qualifier to make the World Cup...
It sounds a lot worse than it would have actually been. The proposed format was a gimme group stage, a fairly soft 8-team knockout tournament, then two home-and-away series against countries that were legitimate World Cup qualification bubble teams. I think Canada would have had a very, very good shot at making it to at least face the 4th-place Hex team even under the old format.
Oh, I absolutely think so too... but you have injuries/red cards etc that can happen and there was no margin for error. Much more margin for error with 14 matches to play
Better than getting eliminated two years before the actual WC competition, but I hear you
yup, that was the worst conceived idea of a tournament format I've ever seen. It's even worse than the Caribbean cup where in extra time a goal counted as two
I don't know... the stories and grainy video of a team defending BOTH goals is pretty legendary
Whose the commentator?
Josh Eastern is on Paramount+
Gareth Wheeler and Terry Dunfield
Oh ty. I’m using a stream and it’s neither of those guys so mine must not be OneSoccer.
Likely the one from the Haiti Football Association then, they have it up on YouTube. Or Paramount+, I forget they are showing the matches.
Was hoping for Corbeanu over Hoilett.
What happened to Kaye?
Canada!!! WELCOME to The Oct, The Octet Roulette, The Octagonal, The Infinity Pool, The Elite Huit, The Artist formerly known as The Hex....
Your time is now!!
great effort and commitment from Larin
I'll take full credit for jinxing Larin into scoring
Now do it for David!
I feel a lot better now that, the own goal isn't the decider.
Agreed, this feels a lot nicer. I'd love them to get another just to take the weight off those own goal shoulders even more.
Yeah I just wanted to be happy about this and I honestly don't know if I could've if we didn't score.
Good for Larin. Love seeing a former MLS guy tearing it up for club and country.
Larin did well to take it away from the Haitian #4 there, definitely had to be a goal
Third times the charm for Larin
I genuinely thought he was going to miss it. Glad to see him score though
OK Larin damn
Finally Larin gets it done!!!!
FINALLY... thank goodness that kids mistake is not the difference
Oh he finally figured it out
Fuck. He finally put it on frame.
Larin always had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Remember when we had possibly the best attack in Concacaf?
It would be fun if we got them back.
Should have 4 or 5 goals with all the chances we've had.
I feel like there's a chance that Larin is really overrated
Turkish fans kept saying it all season, that he was just a poacher in a fortunate Besitkas system. Can't expect to replicate that with the NT.
Nah... there is a reason clubs like West Ham want him...
I mean the entire team had issues finishing tonight. It happens. I just hope it doesnt happen this often against better teams.
Yeah. I feel with his two missed chances here you can see that he isn't great unless he's already running at the ball/with the ball to score.
The best kind!
I almost hope he doesn't go to the PL, I don't see him being successful at that level at all
Someone in the PL wants to sign him?
Tottenham, West Ham and Everton have been linked with Everton and West Ham the strongest.
WTF? This is shocking to me.
He's grown his game a lot since being purely a poacher in Orlando, especially during his loan to Belgium last year. He hasn't necessarily shown it these last games with Canada but he finished second in scoring in the Turkish league, playing often as a winger and combining well with Aboubakar, helping Besiktas win the league in his first year as a starter for them.
West ham have been quite heavily linked
Agreed. Larin for Canada leaves a lot to be desired.
Just hit the net!
Take Larin off. He's having a Larin-for-Canada game. Let's get Cavallini in asap
Edit: okay that was impressive, I admit. Such a weird player, man...
Lucas would take no prisoners in a game like this.
Larin rolling back the clock to his Orlando days
Tajon makes that
finishing like this is gonna come back and bite us in the ass so hard in the Octagonal
I understand Johnston over Laryea only if Laryea is tired. But at this point in the game, bring him in.
No thanks. I don't want Laryea dealing with these lumberjacks. Let Piette deal with them.
Actually that's valid, you've convinced me (though that insurance goal just now definitely helped)
Larin had all day and decided to put it in the parking lot
That's actually the super cool concert venue where Steely Dan and Night Ranger perform...
Man why does Canada have so much trouble scoring?
How many balls does Davies need to put on a silver platter?
My Canada people, are y’all ready for some scary fouls and apathetic refs?
The boys really forgot their shooting boots at home.
I don't really know what else David can do
* be the goalie
* be the coach
* be the assistant coach
* be the water ball
* be the fan
* train youngster
the guy is amazing, there is no limit to what he can do!
Ummm... Canada you know I got that -1.5 goal line... help a guy out!
David has unfortunately missed a lot of chances for us in the last 3 games.
So I'd like to point out that we haven't scored in 65 minutes despite dominating midfield and having top tier forwards. I don't really count that OG.
We have a shit defense so if we aren't scoring with this team then that is an issue.
Yeah overall this is really, really a not great performance. I'm hoping we get something soon because winning like this (as much as I wanna win no matter what) would feel kinda gross tbh.
The only arm that hit was his 3rd
It wouldn't be so much that would give thrm a home field advantage maybe 500 tops, I would expect more Canadians to come.
Do Canadians still have to quarantine after going to the US?
Yes, for 2 weeks.
Then it would definitely not be viable to open the stadium for this game, I doubt any Canadians would find that worth it
Not cool bro
ok that was unnecessary lol
These guys are trying to injure our players because they know they can’t do anything else. They lost the right to respect.
Let's make fun of people for growing up/living in poverty because they are playing rough on the field. Makes total sense...
Kaye so lucky he got his feet up, that was horrible
Bring in Lucas the Beefcake to throw some elbows and wreck some knees
I'm still laughing at that goal
Let me rephrase.
CONCACAF: If you can’t beat them, try and end their fucking careers because you’re a cowardly piece of shit that can’t hold yourself to account for being objectively shit.
“Can you cover for me I need to use the bathroom”.
Haiti is going to break an ankle.
Jesus fucking Christ, this ref!
This is horrid these challenges
I do not like how the Paramount+ guy pronounces Vitoria
That was their chance
CONCACAF: If you can’t beat them, beat them up.
ref wants to keep it a game, ridiculous, he's so late. Watching that leg turn is so awful, especially for all of the issues Henry has had with his legs
There's a difference between letting players play and being an irresponsible referee that allows dangerous plays
You're not in Haiti ref. No one is going to murder you after the game
Yikes, that's definitely 2nd yellow worthy.
Honestly do you really want him on the end of some of these tackles?
Ya know, I don't......but he can fuck 'em up, too.
That’s a fucking joke from a ref that’s been a joke all night.
How is that not a yellow?!!!?!?!
How is that not a card. How. How.
Feels like it's a given at this point but this ref is just awful.
How is that not a second yellow?
These refs never fucking give cards to the team we're playing against
That's 200% a yellow if the ref doesn't give it he's a coward
Edit: Refs a coward with no integrity and his family and friends should be ashamed of him.
Poor Haitian goalie has been amazing tonight other than the blunder.
A bit of a loose first touch from David. Otherwise, that's a goal.
Hoping we score like 4 golazos now. I mean I already was but for HIM
Wow that haitian goalkeeper looks bad
*grew up in Montreal*
He had been very good all night...
such a weird free kick spot lol
Someone gotta make a tiktok with that “oh no. Oh no no no no no” audio to that own goal
I mean they did say the Goalkeeper was born in Montreal. He's a plant!
Damn kaye with the moves... where's that at LAFC
Yeesh that was absurd
